Leisure Education Components

1. Leisure Appreciation

Assist participants to become aware of leisure and the benefits to be gained through

recreation. Assessing attitudes toward leisure is an important component within leisure

appreciation.

2. Self-Awareness

Participants examine their leisure lifestyles to become aware of values, patterns, and

behaviors reflected in their lifestyles, as well as barriers. Self-awareness allows

participants to plan to make alterations to their leisure lifestyles.

3. Decision Making

Decision making skills can be learned through leisure education. Although decisions can

be made using either intuition or reasoning, a combination of both approaches is often

used. Whatever approach is used, it is usually helpful to structure decision making.

4. Self-Assessment

It is critical that participants perform a self-assessment in order to best determine

leisure inclinations. SRACLC can help participants identify recreation preferences and

then assert themselves in order to achieve those preferences.

5. Leisure Activity Skills

Through leisure education programs, participants learn the skills they need in order to

take part in activities.

6. Community Skills

Community skills allow participants to participate in community life. Examples include

knowing how to use public transportation and learning how to handle money.

7. Social Skills

Social skills can be developed through modeling techniques and providing opportunities

for social recreation in order for participants to try out their social skills.

8. Leisure Resources

Leisure education allows SRACLC and teachers to match participants with community

resources and their interests.
