Gustavus Olatungie Christo-Baker; the name I was given on April 12, 1954 arriving with six fingers on each hand as a new born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. I am the first of nine children, three brothers and five sisters; father of three boys George and Ge-rald and Gregory and grandfather of Samaya Jade and Ethan Elias and another granddaughter due in September of 2011 suggested names: Aria Grace.

VOLUME 57, ISSUE 7

“I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.” (Mark 12:43) Most Christians recognize these words spoken by Je-sus in response to the widow’s small donation of two coins. Yet, we seldom realize how effective our own small contributions can be. This month the sleuth spoke with Teresa & Neil Shaffer, and both referred to an experience at First United Methodist Church which confirms the power of small gifts.

Teresa grew up attending St. Paul’s United Church of Christ along with her parents Max & Janet Kreischer and sisters, Denise (Gutierrez) and Darla (Dunlap). On October 5, 1995 she and Neil were wed at First Church. Darla invited them to attend First, and they found a church home. As their children grew, Teresa began to be very involved in the Sunday School. She has served as a “cabby” for the Uptown District since its inception. She has also been the dispatcher for the Christ Child Chapel, developing cur-riculum, ordering materials, and planning lessons. Teresa has worked as Co-director for the Vacation Bible School for six years and has been a teacher two years. She is a member of the Sarah Group that promotes the Angel Tree each Christmas. She takes a turn in the nursery and the 4 & 5 year-old class during worship services, and she helps on Wednesday afternoons with Mustard Seeds.

When asked why she is so immersed in all these church activities, Teresa was exacting in her re-sponse. “Our son Corbin was born in April with birth defects,” she explained. He required hospital care until his passing in August. That’s when we really felt the family atmosphere at this church. People we didn’t even know sent cards and money. They brought meals and showed the love of God through their support.”

Neil echoed similar sentiment. “I love our church,” he began. “It’s like extended family for us. It touched our heart when Teresa would come home with money given to her by caring Christians. Those meals were big when we had to spend so much time at the hospital. It makes you want to help others,” he enthused.

That helps explain Neil’s work ethic at First UMC. He has for several years been the coordinator of ushers and acolytes. “I help the acolytes get set to go and help them know when to approach the al-tar. I make sure that we have enough ushers, and I supervise their responsibilities,” he explained. It’s Neal who arranges for the trailer and drives the truck that pulls the First Church VBS Peony Parade float each year. And Neal is very committed to the Wednesday evening Men’s Bible Study. “Three or four years ago I noticed that all the Bible studies were in the morning when I was working. I asked Jana Thompson about an evening time, and she helped us form the group that meets at 6:00 PM now led by Bob Spath.”

Neil & Teresa’s blended family includes Luke, Logan, Connor, Jared, Sierra, Kaden, and Ashlynn.

All have been touched by the generosity of First United Methodist members, and they in turn have

touched all of us. It’s a wonderful reminder why Christ taught his disciples of the significance of giv-

ing, no matter how big or how small.

Sleuth

Report

Jr.

Edition

Carly Wendel was the subject of my last investigation. I learned that Carly is the youngest of her family of five. Her family includes: Her father, Kyle, her mother, Christie, and two sisters, Courtney and Katlyn.

When researching her “school stuff” I found that her mother was her 4th grade teacher and Mr. Kraner will be her fifth grade teacher. Carly shares in her mother’s passion of teaching as I found that she, too, wants to be a teacher when she grows up.

Carly proves to be a very active young lady as she is involved in dance, vol-leyball, softball, and gymnastics.

When identifying what her favorite Bi-ble story is, I discovered that she en-joys “A little girl and a poor, frail lady.”

Well, that’s it for me...till next month...I’m signing out!...

The Sleuth

Would you like to be a “Guardian

Angel”

to one of our Uptown District

Kids?

I would like to begin a new “Guardian Angel” program in which the adults of the church would be paired up with the kids of the Up-town District. Your role would be to

Secretly provide words of encour-agement, small tokens, etc. for your child. The program does not require you to spend a lot of money, if any. A letter or a hand made gesture of love is all it would take. If I have enough interest, I will schedule a meeting so that the details of the program can be discussed as well as you will have the opportunity to choose your special child. If you are interested in the program, please call me at 419-238-0631 or email me at [email protected].

PAGE 4 NEWSLETTER TITLE

Allow me at this point to extend my sincere gratitude to all members of the congregation; past and present; for their diligence and dedication to her Ministry and Mission. What a joy for me to be able to carry fresh bouquets of gratitude to all current members of our staff for their love and loyalty to the congregation and their faith and faithfulness to the Lord and His ministry.

It is an honor to extend a million-thank-yous to Senior Pastor Rev. Dillion Stass III and Visitation Pastor Rev. Paul Miller for their contributions to the ministry and mission and their commitment to the people and community of FUMC. It is therefore my hope that as we start this time together we all keep the faith and be fruitful; that our concentration be on God’s vision for the congregation and that we challenge each other through Personal Prayers; Winsome Worship; Fond Fel-lowship; and Sincere Service.

Friends: I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ… And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you

to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

The First Church Preschool board would like to thank Juanita Hotmire for her many great years of service as our preschool administrator. Mrs. Hotmire served as our Preschool administrator for a commendable 29 years. Though Mrs. Hot-mire will not be assuming the role as our administrator, we are very glad to an-nounce that she will be back in the classroom for the 2011-2012 school year teaching the kids of our community. Thanks again Mrs. Hotmire.

The Board would like to introduce Kristy Bagley as the new administrator of First United Methodist Preschool. She a graduate of Taylor University with a degree in Elementary Education, and has earned her Master’s degree as a teacher leader at Wright State University. She has experience teaching both elementary and pre-school levels. Kristy has been a coach for cross country and volleyball, and has participated on her church worship team, led AWANA, and assisted on several teen mission trips. Kristy, her husband Jeff, and their 2 children have served as missionaries in Shell, Ecuador where she taught at Nate Saint Memo-rial School. It is our belief that her passion for the Lord and her many experi-ences with children will serve her well as she moves into this new position with First United Methodist Preschool.

not a fan. completely. committed. follower. Join us for a challenging 7-episode, video-driven small group Bible study, centered around the calling of every Christian to truly follow Jesus Christ. Beyond that...it’s an opportunity, a time where you can be open to what Christ would have to say about your thoughts, feelings, and the motivations of your heart. It’s a challenge, a call to look at your relationship with Jesus with fresh eyes, and see whether it’s really every-thing that it could be. When:Thursday, 8:00 a.m. (women’s study) or Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. (anyone—young or old, male/female).

The Apprentice Series A Curriculum for ChristlikenessThe Apprentice Series A Curriculum for ChristlikenessThe Apprentice Series A Curriculum for ChristlikenessThe Apprentice Series A Curriculum for Christlikeness Join us in September for a study that will change your life! Find out about a 34-week study of three powerful books:

The Good and Beautiful God, The Good and Beautiful Life, and The Good and Beautiful Community by James Bryan Smith.

Led by Jana Thompson

ImagineImagineImagineImagine a life free from anger, lust, lying, retaliation, vanity, greed, worry, and condemnation—a life empowered to love, forgive, care, and seek justice. It’s the life Jesus invited his followers to live. But how do we get there? This is the question the Apprentice study explores.

Drawing on what Jesus revealed about God, Apprentice examines our ideas about God. As our understanding of God is strengthened and healed through spiritual practices, we more naturally live the life Jesus described in his Sermon on the Mount.

Learning to live this life is simple, but not easy. In order for this class to have the greatest impact, you will need to make a great commitment: _ Set aside time each week for reading the assigned chapter. _ Complete a soul-training exercise for the week. _ Miss no more than five of the 34 sessions.
