As the Holiday Season

approaches, many of us are

busy with preparing for parties,

shopping, and spending time

with family and loved ones.

However, for many seniors who

do not have these exciting

things in their lives, the Holiday season

(sometimes affecting people from Halloween

through to Valentines Day) is more stressful

and depressing than happy and joyous.

Working closely with clients facing these

issues, it is sometimes important to ask,

“how can I better help ?” Here are a few

practical tips to try and relieve some of the

loneliness and stress our clients are feeling.

1. Acknowledge their Feelings– For some

of our clients, they are not able to be

near their family/friends or they may

have just lost someone close to them.

They may feel worse than usual; they

may need to cry. This is a time to allow

them this release and avoid trying to

immediately “fix” the problem or make

them happy. It is important they know

you are a safe place for them.

2. Reach Out– if they cite loneliness as a

major issue through the holidays, help

them look for options to get out!

Kelowna is full of craft fairs, senior-

specific events and celebrations

associated with religious affiliations.

Sometimes, these events are only

listed online, so helping your client

to maneuver the web is a great

help!

3. Budgeting– financial strains and pre-

conceived ideas about how much

money needs to go in to gifts or dinners.

Help your client create a realistic holiday

budget for family and other social

events. This can help relieve stress and

make an enjoyable holiday realistic!

For Example: Homemade gifts, gift

exchange etc.

4. Encourage Healthy Habits– We all do

this: pack on the holiday weight! It’s

easy to forget about our healthy diets

and exercise and instead, indulge all the

delicacies made easily available.

Encourage your client to go for a walk,

make sure they’re sleeping okay and

suggest they have a healthy snack

before parties to minimize indulgences.

5. Seek Professional Help— despite all

best efforts and intentions, clients may

need referrals to their doctors or mental

health professionals. If you feel your

client could use this help, contact the

Seniors Outreach Office.

Christmas 2017

You can help seniors in your community this year!

Seniors Outreach and Resource Centre has been working with seniors in our community since

1987 and knows many seniors who would benefit from extra help, especially during the Christ-

mas season.

We have noticed that every year, more seniors we help are experiencing much more dire cir-

cumstances, even hunger and homelessness. This year we have determined several ways the

community can help us help seniors.

1. Donation of grocery cards, for stores that have in-house pharmacies, so seniors can pur-

chase a few needed grocery items, extra treats and even medications

2. Donation of dollars, knowing the money will go only to help us help homeless or virtually

homeless seniors to find emergency accommodation and eventually stable housing.

3. Prize gift certificates for our senior volunteers who contribute so much.

4. Santa to a Senior gift purchases through Home InStead Senior Care. Names and tree is

available at London Drugs
