In Memory of Barbara Brown by Mary Carbone

On the morning of April 2 Barbara Brown 77 the matriarch of our equestrian community

lost her valiant battle with cancer and we said good bye to one of Godrsquos most unforgettable

characters

Barbara Brown who knew not a stranger is a Yorba Linda legend everyone who owned a

horse in Yorba Linda and in Orange Riverside Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties

knew of spirited Barbara Brown Barbara understood horses inside and out and if there was a

listening ear Barbara would infect the listener with her passion Barbara lived for her horses

large and miniature with great fervor as she did for her family friends and her city

Barbara dedicated her life to horses and youth She started the 4H Horse project in Yorba

Linda and was a long time active member of the Yorba Linda Country Riders

Barbara rescued many youthful lost souls of incarcerated young adults Barbara graduated

from UC Davis with her Masters in Education and she taught juveniles for the County of

Orange Probation Department Barbara gave her all in directing young troubled adults into

learning and her teaching skills were legendary

After Barbara introduced Barbie a miniature horse to Yorba Linda an epidemic exploded in

our gracious city and the miniature horse became a common pet in Yorba Linda Barbie became a national celebrity as a trick

horse therapy horse and competing equine

Troubled youth often saw the dynamic duo Barbara and Barbie at their temporary holding facilities Barbara guided the young

people through learning about animal husbandry basics and the value and pleasure of a meaningful relationship between man

and animal and the benefit of kindness and patience in working with animals The young people reacted positively in their

interaction with the team and it became clear that Barbararsquos teaching skills partnered with Barbie took the misdirected youthful

minds off personal issues Barbara made a difference in many lives and she left massive impressions

Barbara met her husband Wayne a now retired pharmacist in a tavern and they were married for 44 years Barbara and

Waynersquos daughter Leanne Lewis and her husband Mike of Mira Loma blessed the Brownrsquos life with two grandchildren Erika

and Justin

Barbara also obtained her real estate license and brokerrsquos license which was the foundation of her real estate business Carriage

Trade

Seventy three of her 77 years Barbara spent with horses and her daughter Leanne was in the saddle at the young age of two

Barbara and Leanne earned national and world recognition in the pinto and paint circuit as well as the miniature horse world

Barbara was also a member of Yorba Lindarsquos appointed Equestrian Committee

Barbararsquos 4H youth in the late lsquo60rsquos developed the Paxton Equestrian Center then

recognized as the Buena Vista Equestrian Center

Her quick wit and mischievous fun will be missed and if you were lucky enough

to meet Barbara you caught her passion Barbara always had friends family and

horses in her life Barbara was a living testament to making the best of all the

challenges God gave her

Everyone will read the dates on her gravestone May 12 1935 ndash April 2 2013 but

the real essence of Barbara is in her dash So our tomorrows will now start

without Barbara but we shouldnrsquot think that wersquore apart for every time you think

of Barbara just look within your heart

Happy trails to you until we meet again

Some trails are happy ones

Others are blue

Its the way you ride the trail that counts

Heres a happy one for you

By the time this newsletter arrives our YLCR camping

friends will have just returned from our first campout of

camping is one of my favorite parts of each year and I

want to encourage those that have missed our trips to look

into this for our next camp out (fall if we donrsquot plan

something else early summer) Again it is a great way to

relax and the Casper trips are only 20 miles from home yet you get the feeling of being 100rsquos of miles from civilization We see

deer raccoons and lots of other critters we get to enjoy our FAMOUS YLCR pot luck and have a good time with good friends
