Creating a very warm, comfortable and home-

like atmosphere is the primary goal of staff at

Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge and Sym-

phony Senior Living Inglewood.

And making the fi rst-rate establishments

stand out even more in a wonderfully unique set-

ting for all seniors who are looking for a change.

We have neighborhoods that suit the needs for

every type of person.

“Symphony’s whole philosophy is that we

have different neighborhoods for different needs

of care and independence,” said Joe Sullivan,

Executive Director, describing the establish-

ment’s physical lay-out and design. “We really

want to be non-facility. We want people to feel

like they are living in their home, not ‘a home’.

We want to stay away from the institutional ter-

minology and the way we interact with our resi-

dents,” he said.

Symphony Senior Living includes Neigh-

borhoods for seniors in the independent living

category. “Then we have independent residents

who do need a little assistance, we can offer them

the care they need while maintaining their inde-

pendence.”

‘Oasis’ is the name of the assisted living

Neighborhood.

And at Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge,

there is the Moments Neighbourhood for people

who need memory care – those living with de-

mentias or Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s an incredibly innovative area that Sulli-

van really wants to draw attention to, as the area

is complete with enhancements to bring comfort

and stability to those who live there.

“One of the key messages I want to get out is

about our Moments Neighbourhood,” said Sul-

livan. “We are one of the only places in Red Deer

right now that is offering a private memory care

program.” Currently, we do have suites available.

“You could move in tomorrow.”

As Sullivan points out, long-term care facili-

ties offers memory care services, too, but these

services are usually delivered in a facility-driven

way.

“Here, our resident to care staff ratios are

higher. We have a lot more programs in terms of

activities and our overall approach to memory

care is much more refi ned.”

At Symphony Senior Living, it’s not about re-

minding those living with dementia of what the

actual date and time is when they ask a question

about an incident or person from their past.

“Our philosophy is to live in the moment with

them. If it’s 1952, that’s where we are with them.

We have lifestyle stations in the memory care

neighborhood.

“One of the stations is a bureau with all sorts

of scarves, gowns and hats from the 40s, 50s and

60s – all kinds of things depending on where they

are, all to help trigger memories from the past.”

There are also various TV programs and

fi lms from various eras that folks can enjoy as

well. “They can watch the Andy Griffi th show, or

shows from the 1940s or 50s.

“It’s about taking with our residents and liv-

ing with them in that moment.”

Sullivan also pointed out that physical activ-

ity is emphasized. “We always have snacks and

food, and hydration readily available for them as

well. The key is a healthy diet.”

Reg Bernier, Director of Wellness, agrees.

“People living with Alzheimer’s and demen-

tia are constantly on the move, so they burn so

much more energy. You need to replenish that

energy with snacks between their meals as a

supplement to keep up with their energy lev-

els. We don’t want them losing weight. It’s

always been a challenge with those who are

living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Sullivan points out that staff receive special

training to work in the Moments area.

“It takes a special person to work in those

neighbourhoods. It’s more like a home environ-

ment.” Staff wear regular looking clothes as

opposed to hospital-type uniforms. Medications

aren’t given in public areas. There are no medi-

cation carts out and about. Another key benefi t

is a continuation of care, right from independent

living through to living in the Moments neigh-

bourhood. “We can go from purely independent

all the way to palliative – we can care for you for

as long as you would like to stay with us. We can

handle just about any care challenges that ar-

rise.”

Ultimately, it’s about bolstering that sense of

home; or normal and everyday routines. “It’s all

about the dignity of the residents. That’s what

we really want for them. And we want to make

sure there’s lot for them to do.” There are six to

eight activities to enjoy each day as well.

There’s even Sylvester the cat who lives here,

who the residents take joy in as well.

Our Moments Neighborhood has been spe-

cifi cally designed to accommodate people who a

living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. “People get

highly agitated when they come to a dead-ends

or doors, where this Neighbourhood is circular,”

said Bernier. “It’s a wonderful aspect that way.”

Sullivan said another plus is wonderful staff

that know the residents so well. “That’s the awe-

some thing – they become family. Even though

they are suffering from a disease, we want them

to feel like they’re at home, that this is where

they belong, and that they are with family mem-

bers.”

Paradise RV has been offering

exceptional, no pressure service for

six years. With fi ve locations across

Alberta, including Grande Prairie,

Leduc and three Red Deer locations,

Paradise RV always has the stock and

available service to serve you best.

“We have one thing that is unique,

and I think it’s been key to our success.

Our ownership group decided to do

a one-price system. What that means

is we have one sticker price and it’s

not a suggested retail price, it’s our

Paradise RV price, and it’s the lowest

price the customer is going to get,” says

Operations Manager Peter Schmucker.

“You don’t have to be a great haggler

to get a good deal. We always charge the

same prices.”

Paradise RV deals with only

top manufacturers in the world to

guarantee satisfaction before, during

and after your sale. With 24-hour

service lines, customers can call at any

time to be assisted by a knowledgeable

member of the Paradise RV team.

Schmucker goes on to explain how

Paradise RV differs from other RV sales

outlets.

“With our buying power, dealing

with top manufacturers in the world,

we can pass those savings onto our

customers. When we buy trailers, we

will buy, say, 250 instead of 100, so that

we get a bigger discount. When we

receive that discount, we pass it along

to our customers.”

Over 1,000 units company-wide can be

transferred from any location to satisfy

your need for summer adventures.

“We have drivers transferring

trailers all the time. It gives us an

advantage to have that. If we don’t have

the product someone is looking for, we

can get it,” says Schmucker.

Paradise RV offers a relaxed sales

environment not based on commission.

This ensures that a customer is satisfi ed

with their purchase, can operate within

a budget and can rest assured knowing

their sales consultant has no ulterior

motive.

“If he sells a $15,000 trailer or a $50,000,

they get paid the same, which is perfect

for the customer,” explains Schmucker.

With abundant selection, trusted

parts and expert service, Paradise RV

will help your family create memories to

treasure for years to come.

“The buying experience at Paradise

RV is a family affair. This is a luxury

item – people are happy. Kids get

excited. They know they’ll be building

memories and going on holidays, a

great experience for any family,” says

Schmucker.

“Paradise RV can help you get to

that.”

The aim of Paradise RV is to make the

buying experience fun and pleasant by

being honest, forthcoming and helpful

to their customers.

Schmucker says that the most

important things when choosing an RV

are price, service and selection.

“Paradise RV has all three of those

a s p e c t s

with our buying power,

available service 24/7 by phone or

in-store during operation hours and

having multiple locations to provide a

variety of models.”

Schmucker personally travels

between locations to help with

showrooms, manager operations

and customer service. Laid back and

helpful, Schmucker has been with

Paradise RV since the beginning and

can offer exceptional service to his

customers.

Offering top quality service for an

affordable cost is what one newly

opened hair salon in Red Deer

strives for.

Sharper Image Hair Design offers

a family-friendly atmosphere with

services for women, men and

children.

The salon has been open for

fi ve months and since then has

fl ourished.

“The perfect opportunity

came up and we have really

transformed the salon,” said

Jennifer Sharpe, owner of

Sharper Image Hair Design. “I have

been doing hair in Red Deer for just

over 11 years and I was working

at the same salon that entire time.

This opportunity fell into my lap

and it was perfect.

“Our clients are so loyal and

the people that have

supported us

have just

blown me

out of the

water. It’s

more than

I expected it

to be.”

There are seven licensed stylists

at Sharper Image Hair Design, with

some of them being full and part-

time.

The salon offers cuts and colours

as well as perms and sets. The salon

also offers waxing services for

men and women. Clients can book

appointments, but walk-ins are

more then welcome.

“We have a caring and friendly, yet

professional environment. We want

to make our clients feel comfortable

and at ease,” she said. “We want to

make it a really inviting and genuine

experience. Our clients matter and

we want to show them that.

“At the end of the day it’s about

making people feel better about

themselves no matter what they are

struggling with in their lives. We

want to help people to feel special.”

Looking forward Sharpe said

she hopes to get involved in the

community.

“I would really like to build

relationships with the schools in

town and start a mentorship and

scholarship program,” she said.

“When I started in hair school

after high school there was a

scholarship program and I applied

for it. I got a Marvel scholarship

and a scholarship from a family in

Drumheller, which is where I am

from. The family said to me one

day to pay it forward and I fi nally

feel like I am at the point where I

can do that and I am excited about

that.”

The salon will be involved in a

fundraising event for a young Red

Deer girl. The event will be hosted

in conjunction with Hugs for Keera

at the Westpark Community Center

from 1-4 on Friday, June 6th with

a hamburger BBQ for $5. People

are encouraged to participate with

either shaving their head or by

donation.

Sharper Image Hair Design is

located in the Highland Green

Plaza (4-88 Howarth St.) The salon

is wheelchair accessible as well.

“I am so proud to call these ladies

my stylists, they are a dream team”

Sharpe states. “Hard working,

dedicated girls that are there to

please their clients. I am so grateful

for them”.

Their hours of operation include

Monday, Wednesday and Friday

from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and

Family-owned and operated, Cam Clark Ford is known

for their unbeatable service and no pressure atmo-

sphere, which is sure to leave a smile on your face when

you walk on and off the lot.

Cam Clark Ford has been offering the best deals on

new and used Ford vehicles at their locations in Red

Deer, Calgary, Vancouver and Olds for 28 years.

General Manager Sean Bell explained how Cam

Clark is still involved with the day-to-day activity of

his dealerships.

“Although other Ford dealerships all sell and ser-

vice the same vehicles - what really sets us apart is

the fact that before it was fashionable to do so, Cam

believed in maintaining customers for life,” said

Bell. “This means we want our customer satisfac-

tion to be at 100 per cent every time you walk in and

out of our doors and this means we will stand be-

hind our vehicles no matter what.”

Located on the east side of Gasoline Alley at 417

Lantern St, Cam Clark acquired Festival Ford from the

Easy family two years ago. This new state-of-the-art fa-

cility is a fantastic addition to the Cam Clark Group and

goes perfectly with the unbeatable technology Ford puts

into their vehicles.

“Ford was fortunate to avoid taking bailout money

during the economic crisis. This allowed us to continue

research and development while other companies were

forced to maintain the status quo. This has provided

Ford a tremendous competitive advantage over the past

few years.” said Bell.

Bell went on to explain how Clark and his employees

have been striving to make sure they are number one in

service across the country. Thanks to Clark’s rural laid

back lifestyle, he believes it is important to give buyers

the ‘rural edge.’ This results in a low pressure sales ap-

proach that people really seem to enjoy.

Bell, who has been working for Cam Clark Ford for

nearly 10 years has watched the industry change im-

mensely and says he couldn’t be more excited for the fu-

ture of Cam Clark Ford.

“The quality of our product across the board has grown

leaps and bounds in the last 10 years and this includes

our web services which are really a tent pole of our busi-

ness nowadays,” explained Bell.

“You can view all of our inventory, appraise trade-ins,

and do pretty much every thing online that you could

do in here.”

While Bell believes at the end of the day most buy-

ers still want to come down to the dealership and take

their future ride for a test drive, he believes their web

presence can make the buying process simpler.

By viewing inventory online, customers can get a

feel for what they want to look at and what catches

their eye before they ever step on to the lot.

Visit www.camclarkfordreddeer.com to view

TECHNO SOLVE INC.

BY MARK WEBERRed Deer Express

When it comes to a

multitude of ways to light up

your world via specialized

LED lighting products, Red

Deer-based Techno Solve Inc.

is the one-stop-shop for top

selection and service.

Techno Solve specializes

in RV LED replacements

lights, Off Road Lights and

RF Remote controlled strip

lighting.

Ken and Brenda Johnson

take a special pride in their

home-based business, which

was launched about three

years ago.

“I was looking for

something more effi cient

for myself,” explains

Ken, refl ecting on the

beginnings of the business.

LED lights not only save

energy, the bulbs are easy

to install, durable, bright,

eco-friendly and they boast

an exceptionally long life,

lasting up to 50,000 hours,

notes the Techno Solve Inc.

web site.

They also don’t require

any reconfi guration of

fi xtures. Incandescent bulbs

can simply be replaced

with the appropriate LED

– to achieve huge energy

savings and cool

operation.

“There is

sometimes a

misconception

where people

think they have

to buy new

light fi xtures

or rewire

their trailers,

but that’s not

necessary,” says

Brenda. “It’s

very, very easy

to do.”

T h e i r

m a n d a t e

couldn’t fi t in better with

the times, as consumers are

looking for greater effi ciency

in the products they select

not to mention a ‘greener’

approach overall.

“Techno Solve is actually

the name of a class that I

created back when I was a

teacher,” said Ken. “I wanted

to challenge the kids with

using technology to solve

problems.” The spirit of

creativity and inventiveness

fl ourished. When it came

time to setting up the

company, Ken wanted those

very notions to be a part of

the new venture.

Ken and Brenda went on

to thoroughly research the

business concept, and locate

the best OEM Manufacturers

of LED lighting worldwide.

“We learned who the good

manufacturers were and

some of our products are

manufactured for us to our

specifi cations both locally

and in other countries. So we

have an excellent selection of

quality products.”

Techno Solve can provide

lights in a variety of colors,

the main

colors for

RV’s are

Pure White,

Natural White

and Warm

White.

As for

a growing

market, they

are certainly

in the right

place. Ken

said one-third

of the RVs

p u r c h a s e d

in Canada

are sold in

Alberta. Competition is

strong, typically from large

U.S. and Eastern Canadian

based companies. But as Ken

points out, their attention

to personalized customer

service is a top priority and

their location makes for

unique customer interaction.

Meanwhile, the Johnsons

are seeing robust growth in

their business, as product

knowledge increases. They

also attain exposure by

attending various trade

shows promoting their

product and on-line store.

“There are always new

applications,” says Ken.

“We are always looking to

expand areas and enjoy new

challenges to solve.”

People are also becoming

aware of the many ways

LED lights and lighting

strips can be utilized –

recreation vehicles, homes,

boats, driveways, emergency

vehicles, oilfi eld, docks,

graders, tractors and patios –

there is really no end to what

people want them for, adds

Brenda.

They also carry solar

panels and controllers –

indeed, the sky is the limit

with how LED lighting design

can enhance and creatively

brighten a particular setting.

“And of course with Ken’s

background, he can be very

creative and come up with

a solution,” Brenda says. “It

really is catching on.”

A longstanding IT company has recently opened its newest location in Red Deer.

F12 Networks is an Alberta-based company and has been operating in Edmonton and Cal-

gary since 1996. An offi ce was opened in Red Deer at #8, 4699

61 St., last year which is man-aged by Wade Bayntun, and offi -

cials with the company are excited to be doing business in the City.

“F12 provides an all-inclusive network offering to clients. What I mean by that is that we don’t just wait for the phone to ring and then come and fi x the problem. Clients get all of the offi ce products plus all of the support combined. They get everything they need to operate their network,” said Leanne Yeat-man, operations manager of F12 Networks. “Our direction is to not profi t when clients are broken. Our

approach is to keep things working and operating.”

F12 Networks is the only one of its kind to offer unique options to their clients such as an all-inclusive plan called Service Plus which includes computer equipment, software and support all for one monthly fee.

They also offer a unique one-click support tool called F12 Con-nect. By pressing the F12 key on their keyboard clients can interact with their customized support teams based on business industry.

These support teams are known as NOC Pods (Network Operations Centre), and are focused on partic-ular industries which allow them to have a deeper knowledge on indus-try specifi c applications and techni-cal requirements.

“We put a large emphasis inter-nally on the F12 culture. As staff we have a unique identity called ‘Networkers’. We have made heavy investments into our offi ce spaces.

Networkers enjoy highly comfort-able, open-concept work areas which are techy, funky and deco-rated to match our brand,” said Yeatman.

Bayntun added F12 Networks offers free, no obligation consulta-tions to businesses to help deter-mine their needs.

“We want to make sure the en-tire process is easy,” he said. “We create a budget for them when it comes to their IT needs.”

Also important for F12 Net-works is their involvement in the community.

“There are a number of orga-nizations we have partnered with closely over the years. We do a lot of work with medical clients through-out Alberta and one of the organi-zations we were recently involved in is I See Change. They are a group of medical students at the Universi-ty of Alberta and they work on de-livering medical practices in third world countries.

“Last year we got to send a team out to one of their current proj-ects,” said Yeatman.

“Another organization that is near and dear to us is the Ronald McDonald House and we support them across Alberta. We do regular dinners for them and other things for them as well. We’ve also done events for cancer fundraising and we sponsor people in different re-lays and races and things and we also support the Canadian Diabetes Association in various events.”

Ultimately, Bayntun said the goal for F12 Networks is to ensure businesses have their IT needs taken care of.

“Businesses become more es-tablished and continue to grow. We can help a growing business truly manage their IT services with a budgeted cost every month.”

A Sylvan Lake medical clinic is diversifying into cosmetic and related services.

Horizon Family Medicine will open Horizon Vein & Cosmetic Centre at its 65 Hewlett Park Landing premises on May 5. The new centre will be headed by Dr. Raymond Comeau, who has practised family medicine at Horizon Family Medicine since it opened in September 2011.

Comeau started Red Deer’s fi rst full-service cosmetic clinic in 2000. He sold that business in 2008, but remained interested in the fi eld.

“It’s very interesting and gratifying to be able to treat people who are having real problems with their skin,” he said.

Procedures to be performed at Horizon Vein & Cosmetic Centre will go much deeper than the skin. It will off er sclerotherapy, and Botox treatments

for both cosmetic purposes and

medical problems like headaches,

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain

and excessive sweating, said Comeau. Another service will be platelet-rich

plasma (PRP) joint injections for

muscular skeletal conditions like

tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and

plantar fasciitis.

“This is a procedure which is really quite new but really excellent, and being used by many of the sports medicine specialists and physiatrists,” he said, describing PRP as a great alternative to cortisone.

Other procedures at the clinic will include travel medicine and vaccinations, and professional skin

care like biopsies, skin cancer removal

and treatment of warts and acne. Comeau said demand for these types

of services is growing. “It’s gone up dramatically as people

become more aware of what’s available. They’re not really wanting to suff er with things that they had to suff er with 30 or 40 years ago.”

Horizon Vein & Cosmetic Centre will celebrate its grand opening on May 9, with profi ts from the treatments provided that day to be donated to international development organization A Better World. Comeau and other staff at Horizon Family Medicine have been active supporters of A Better World, and recently travelled to Haiti to help at a medical clinic there.

Horizon Family Medicine also has a clinic in Red Deer, with 13 doctors working between the two locations.

Intricately designed jewellery atDiamonds by Verage

BY KALISHA MENDONSARed Deer Express

At Diamonds by Verage,

each piece of jewellery is

handcrafted on location and

made exclusive for each order.

Verage Shimoon has

been in the goldsmith and

jewellery design business

for nearly fi ve decades. He

meticulously designs, moulds

and manufactures products

specifi c to a person’s vision to

create a unique and memorable

piece.

“I love what I do,” he said.

“When I put my stamp on it,

it has to be 100 per cent to my

approval before it goes out to

the public, or before it gets on

anyone’s fi nger - especially

because we specialize in

engagement rings and wedding

rings.

“It’s so important to a

woman, so we spend days

and days and days trying to

make the best that we can - a

very special ring for that very

special occasion.”

Shimoon’s expert eye and

service system is sure to

please. His delicate process

takes approximately six to

eight weeks depending on the

complexity of design. Each

minute counts as he and his

team create a product from

start to fi nish that is exclusive

and tailored to perfection.

“We’re not only just

designers. We do repairs, we

do diamond settings and we

sell diamonds. Our specialty is

high quality diamonds – that’s

the fi eld we picked up on, and

that is where we will stay.

“We are also manufacturers.

We do have retail, quite a bit

of stock but mostly we work

on design - new concepts, new

designs and new ideas. Usually

people bring us pictures of what

they’ve seen, either online or in

different magazines. Then we

take that concept, alter it and

then we design an exclusive

piece. There is only one made

for that person. That’s our

strength.”

As mentioned, Diamonds

by Verage specializes in

beautifully crafted engagement

and wedding rings. The team

works tirelessly to create a one-

of-a-kind ring, from women’s

engagement rings to men’s

wedding bands.

Shimoon has passed the

skills down to his children as

he looks toward succession

planning for his business.

He was only 15 when he

began learning the trade of

goldsmithing from his uncle,

and so has spent nearly

his entire life exacting the

art of jewellery design and

production. The expansion of

business will continue as his

family grows.

“We’re always trying to be

dealing with better quality

merchandise - high-grade,

high colour and good clarity

in our diamonds. This is our

specialty.”

Range of Primary Care Network programs continues to expand

REALPEOPLE.

REDDEERPCN.COM

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer ExpressThe Red Deer-based Primary Care Network continues

to expand in terms of programming and educational

opportunities, and the goal is to reach more Central

Albertans than ever before.

Around the City, residents may notice the message of

‘Real People, Real Successes’ regarding the PCN. Those

messages of personal success related to the programs

offered are key to bolstering public awareness, said Dr.

Peter Bouch, past chair of the organization.

“It’s a new campaign to make people more aware

of the Primary Care Network – we have a lot of great

programs and essentially, the campaign is directing

people to the web site where there are real people

telling their stories, and pictures of people that have

had success in various programs.”

A PCN is a network of doctors and other health

providers such as nurses, dietitians and pharmacists

working together to provide primary health care

to patients. Each network has the fl exibility to

develop programs and provide services in a way that works

to meet specifi c needs of patients. And as Bouch points out,

the campaign featuring testimonials is critical in helping

spark interest in those looking to better their health in a

particular way. “A lot of people will probably fi nd that the

physician will tell them to go to a program, but if they hear

a fi rsthand story from another patient, they’re more likely

to fi nish a program or at least sign up for it.”

Bouch describes the web site as very interactive, with

thorough descriptions of the programs. “Once they go

there, they can read about the things they would like to do.

They can then get a hold of their family physician and they

can then get referred.”

Staff of the PCN are also focusing on the popular Health

Cafes – engaging information gatherings which include

presentations by physicians or other experts on a given

topic, followed by a question and answer session.

Past Health Cafes have focused on how to be a better

patient, tips on exercise, information about vaccinations

and antibiotics and another was about dealing with the

effects of menopause. The public is encouraged to check the

web site for updates about the latest Health Cafes as well.

Bouch oversaw the ‘how to be a better patient’ session,

where he discussed how people can make the most out of a

doctor’s appointment. “It’s a way for people to receive good

knowledge that is scientifi cally-based and evidence-based,”

he said. “I think they are also another way of engaging the

public – of fi nding out what they want in the Primary Care

Network. Sometimes we get ideas on possible programs to

think about as well.”

As to the programs offered, they range from dealing

with chronic disease and mental health issues to managing

anxiety and becoming happier. One of the most popular

ones is Health Basics, which focuses on diet/exercise and

adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Another feature residents are seeing around Red Deer

are outdoor gyms – a project the PCN worked with the

City on to bring to fruition. “It goes hand in hand with our

mandate of trying to keep people active, and getting them

outdoors. The Primary Care Network is really a catalyst for

active living in the community.”
