That soft, forgiving corn snow turns moguls into pliable, manage-able mounds and your edges carve so easily, you’ll feel like you could crank turns forever.

And then, there’s the sun. You can end up more tanned than your friends who went south for Spring Break!

Here at Big White, it’s not un-common to see people out in their short sleeve shirts and shorts when the mercury starts to soar, but be-fore you strip down too far, there are some sun tips you might want to follow.

With 75,000 new cases of skin cancer each year in Canada, if you don’t want to become another sta-tistic, then you might want to wear sunscreen.

And parents, don’t just hand the tube to your child and let them do themselves or you’ll easily be able to spot the places they missed at the end of the day. Take the time to make

sure they’re completely covered as statistics also tell us that severe sun-burns in childhood can lead to skin cancer when you’re an adult.

Ball caps might work to keep most of the direct sun off your face but remember the snow works like a giant mirror, refl ecting the UV rays back up into your face, so hats just aren’t enough.

Most importantly, remember to protect your eyes. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses with 100% UV rat-ing and wear them.

And last but not least, remember this:

Dear Mom and Dad:

I can’t thank you enough for the

awesome ski trip we had at Big White.

I had so much FUN!!!!

I hope you didn’t miss me too much

while you guys were out having that

romantic dinner at Sante on Wednesday

night, but I really didn’t want to miss

eating pizza and riding the Mega

Snowcoaster with my new friends at the

Big White Kids Centre.

I also LOVED the Craft Night on

Monday night and I heard Dad say he

liked it a lot because it was free.

I’m not sure what was more fun,

playing on the climbing wall inside the

Kid’s Centre, getting ski lessons or just

playing outside in the snow.

Anyhow, thanks again for such a

wonderful trip.

Can we go back to Big White again

next year?

Love, Mikey

“Excuse me, Sir, do you mind me asking, how long have you been skiing at Big White?”

It seemed a much politer question than saying, “Wow, how old are you?”

But he knew what I was asking and as it turns out, Bob is 84 years young! He has been skiing for 75 years, the past 44 of them here at Big White.

Asked if he’d seen a lot of changes at the hill since he started in 1968, he laughed, “I can’t even see the hill anymore with all the changes.”

Bob drives up to ski here almost every day – sometimes alone, some-times with friends and sometimes

his family, where the three generations will go out together for a few turns. “When I ski with the grandkids, one skis in front and one skis behind so they can pick up the pieces if I fall,” laughed Bob.

What’s his favorite run on the hill? “Anything Green,” he replied, “at my age, I stay away from anything else.”

Here at Big White, we have a new Club 65 for Season pass holders aged 65 and older. Benefi ts include some priority parking spots, free coffee, a free tune up and extra discounts on food. You’re also eligible for a free 50 + group lesson.

Although it’s not something he participates in, the 50+ program is offered through the Big White Ski School every Monday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It features a group lesson followed by a gourmet lunch. You can register at the Ski and Board School Desk in the Village Centre Mall, call 250-491-6101, toll free at 1-866-491-9040 or email them at [email protected]

CruztheBluesBluesWithout a doubt, one of our most beloved events,

Cruz the Blues, returns to the mountain a couple

more times before the season ends.

This fun, free event has helped thousands upon thousands of people discover new favorite runs while searching the moun-tain looking for the specifi ed intermediate Blue runs you need to fi nd to win.

March 17 and 18 is our fi nal full size Cruz the Blues event but we’ll also have two Mini Cruz the Blues events as well, one running March 12 to 16 and the second going March 26 to 30.

For those unfamiliar with our regular Cruz the Blues event, the way it works is, you register at the Big White Activities Desk inside the Village Centre Mall and they’ll give you a passport for free, which has spots for you to get stamped. Each of the blue runs listed in the passport has a stamper hidden somewhere on the run. All you have to do is fi nd it, stamp your passport and then start looking for the next. You get the entire weekend to fi ll your passport then prizes and free T-shirts for participants are handed out at the Happy Valley Day Lodge at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Mini Cruz the Blues are slightly different. Instead of having to fi ll a whole passport, each day they’ll announce fi ve Blue runs on the hill you need to fi nd. Get your entry form from the Activities Desk each day in the Village Centre Mall and see how many of the fi ve Blue runs you can fi nd each day!

Anyone can participate in these free, fun week-long events, so get out there, explore the mountain, and stamp your entry form! Obtain one stamp each day to enter the draw to win the grand prize – a Nintendo Wii! The winners will be drawn on March 16th and 30th.

The BBQ begins setting up around 11 a.m. and stays up until the lifts close and the sun

fades away from the Village. Just kick off your skis or snowboard, if you like,

and join any table you can fi nd room at. Word of warning, however, if the sun feels really good, and the beverages taste a little

too good, and the people you meet are incredibly nice, your lunch break may last

longer than expected. But hey, you’re outside in the sun, so does it

really matter?

Enjoy!

Neil Edgeworth loved to snow-board. “Neil was a local rider that started riding here at Big White back in 1986,” notes Flynn Seddon, di-rector of snowboarding and terrain parks at Big White.

Sadly, Neil was tragically killed while on an out-of-bounds photo shoot on Chamonix in Northern France. Chamonix and nearby Mt Blanc have long had a reputation for sudden storms and unpredictable avalanches.

Neil, who was just 25 years old at the time, was working with three other North Americans when the nearly 5,000-foot chute he was drop-ping collapsed and crumbled into a violent class-3 avalanche. After slid-ing an estimated 4,000 feet, Neil was found buried near the surface of the slide. Despite the quick appearance of three doctors on the scene, all attempts to revive him were unsuc-

cessful.A memorial race was created in

his honour and this year we’re cel-ebrating the 15th Annual Neil Edge-worth Banked Slalom, taking place March 23 to 25.

It’s a classic banked slalom, at-tracting pro riders from around the world along with tons of amateurs who come to enjoy a great weekend of racing and fun.

With only 200 spots available, you're advised to register early for this. Categories are 14 and under, 15 to 18, 19 to 24, 25 to 34, 35 to 44, 45 to 40, 50 and over, or Pro.

Big White staff are also welcome to come race in this event if they can get the day off or squeeze it into their lunch break. “We’re looking forward to having a good event this year,” notes Flynn.

While the event is a competition, Flynn says, it has a much deeper

Ed Kruger of Monashee Adventure Tours started taking people on Snow Biking Tours a couple of years ago and the sport is taking off.

Using a mountain bike frame, the snow bike comes with a full range of usable gears and is a great way to head out and ride the Nordic Trails.

The front tire has been replaced with a ski and the back tire turns a cat track like belt that gives you the traction to propel you forward. Thankfully, they also come with a braking system on the rear track so you can keep your speed under control.

Each tour out comes with full instructions to get you on your way and while there is no age limit, you do need to be big enough to reach

the pedals and handle the bike safely so Ed says, you must be at least fi ve feet tall to ride.

The tours depart from the top of the gondola every day, leaving at 3 p.m. and returning by 4:30 p.m. Bookings must be made 24 hours in advance and helmets are highly recommended. Ed has some available to use if you forget to bring your own.

If you have a big group or wish to book custom times and dates, you can put in your request at the same place all bookings for the regular Snow Bike tours are made – the Activities Desk in Big White’s Village Centre Mall.

Cost is $80 per person + HST, and you can call the Activites Desk for more information or to book your trip at 250-491-6111.

For those of us who live here, work here or ski here on a regular basis, it’s hard to imagine life with-out Big White, but in actual fact, the hill has only been around for the past 49 years.

In anticipation of next year’s big 50th birthday bash, we’re throwing a big party while we’re still in our 40s – after all, if we’re going to party for a whole week, we want to do it while we’re still young and crazy enough to go for it!

So, we’re putting out a call to all Big White staff past and present, as well as skiers, riders, and guests who have enjoyed the mountain, all the way back to 1963, to come out for our fi rst reunion before we hit the half century mark.

Participation in our week of fun will cost just $30 to register, which includes a special commemorative reunion t-shirt, a VIP card, and free

entry into all the events of the week which include the following:

Monday April 9thRegistration takes place from 4

to 6 p.m., you can pick up your com-memorative t-shirt and VIP Card in Happy Valley and enjoy the après ski party with Jon Bos as well as a free wine tasting for Reunion regis-trants.

Tuesday, April 10thWe’ll have a great lunch BBQ in

the Village Centre featuring live mu-sic and free hotdogs, starting at 12 noon. Then join in the après ski par-ty with Jon Bos plus a free Okanagan Spring Beer tasting in the Happy Val-ley Day Lodge.

Wednesday, April 11thIt’s being called Hot Dog Day, a

chance to go retro! Everyone is en-couraged to dress up in your old suits for a time warp! There will be anoth-

Don't miss the Trivia contest from 4 to 6 p.m. which during the après ski party at Happy Valley Day Lodge with Jon Bos . Then, at 7 p.m., Ron Butler has made us a special video for us to share with everyone in the Happy Valley Day Lodge.

Thursday, April 12thTeam Supreme races return to

the mountain starting at 1 p.m., but with a millennium twist – we’re holding them on the ski cross course! There will be prizes and a wrap up party in the Happy Valley Day Lodge starting at 5 p.m. Then, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., our favorite long time Big White folk performer (who also knows how to rock it out), takes the stage at Happy Valley Day Lodge – Valdy! Valdy has been per-forming every year at Big White, mostly for our special staff party, for decades and so it seems only fi tting to have him performing again this week.

Friday, April 13thBecause we’re not in the least

way superstitious and it being a Fri-day and it being the 13th, we plan to continue our celebration in style, starting with another 12 p.m. lunch time BBQ in the Village with more music followed by a 6 p.m. wine tast-ing in the Village Centre Mall, where we’ll have all sorts of old photos and memorabilia on display.

Saturday, April 14th

It’s an all-day trea-sure hunt with clues scattered all over the mountain and loads of prizes to be won!

You can sign up and tell your friends all about it via the Big White Reunion Face-book group, see who’s already RSVP’d and invite your friends. It’s going to be one big week long party!

Big White's Reunion Week April 9-14 promises to be
