JANUARY 16TH 2020TALKTAKE A SEAT AND MEETSpeaker: Karin Bucannan

Karin is widely travelled and has an eye for quirky, unusual street furniture, especially the wonderfully stylish and fun benches that adorn our parks and towns. This talk concentrates on ‘seats with statues’ so expect to meet some famous people including Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde, John Lennon and even Captain Mainwaring.

MARCH 19TH 2020TALKCHAUCER’S MEDIEVAL PILGRIMSSpeaker: Martin Crowther

A welcome return from Martin Crowther who so entertained us in November 2018. With his usual humorous approach, he gives a ’warts and all’ account of the pilgrimage to Canterbury, based on the latest historical evidence.

MAY 16TH 2019 AGM and TALKTHE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDITH CAVELLSpeaker: Melanie Gibson-Barton

Edith Louisa Cavell was a British nurse celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers, from both sides, during the First World War. She helped some 200 allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium, for which she was arrested. She was found guilty of treason and executed by a German firing squad on October 12 1915. A legendary and inspirational woman.

JULY 18TH 2019 TALKGRAVESEND INDUSTRY IN WORLD WAR 2Speaker: Frank Turner

Gravesend has always been a centre of industry, particularly cement and paper but our speaker concentrates on the period of the second world war. Just for us he is extending his talk on industry to include the Cooling Secret Radio Station to add even more local interest.

SEPTEMBER 19TH 2019TALKJOAN, THE FAIR MAID OF KENTSpeaker: James Dickinson

Joan was born in 1328 and was the granddaughter of King Edward 1. After the death of her first husband, Joan married the Black Prince and became the first Princess of Wales. The Flemish chronicler, Jean Froissart, called Joan ‘the most beautiful woman in all the realm of England’. Her brother-in-law, John of Gaunt’ became known as ‘the most hated man in England’.

NOVEMBER 21ST 2019TALKRIOT, ROBBERY AND MURDER: SHAKESPEARE AND MARLOWE IN KENT

Speaker: Professor Stephen Prickett

Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury 1564, the same year that William Shakespeare was born in Stratford upon Avon. Shakespeare was definitely influenced by Marlowe’s work and there has always been speculation about who wrote what. There is no documentary evidence that they ever met. Our November meeting traditionally has a Christmassy feel so there will be wine, a raffle and seasonal refreshments
