Why We Need Advent

Let’s face it, there is a lot of “stuff” swirling around and filling our lives right now. Along with our hopes,

our concerns, and all the stuff on our “to do” lists, there is added on this month the crazy rush of the holiday season. For many of us this means extra activities and “running,” added financial concerns, additional relationship pressures, and lots of stress. What’s more, we know that the world around us is not at peace as we approach the beginning of 2018. Certainly, there is much to raise our level of anxiety about the future. Which, dear friends, is why we need Advent.

The season of Advent comes to us in all of the stuff that is swirling around in our lives, and offers us a chance to rest. It is a time to prepare our minds and our hearts, to open our very lives to the presence of God. Yes, Advent looks back to the birth of a baby, to the Incarnation of God in Jesus Christ, but it also looks forward. Advent looks forward to the time when the one who came first as a baby returns in the fullness of his glory. Advent points us in hope to that Day when we will have nothing to fear, to that Day when weeping and mourning and even death will be no more.

A Word of Thanks

Dear Members and Friends of Good Shepherd,

On December 3 we began the season of Advent, and, given the way the calendar falls this year, Christmas is not far behind. As we near the end of the year, I marvel at how fast 2017 has gone. I also give thanks for the many ways in which God continues to use our congregation to touch the lives of others. Some of these ways you can read about in this edition of the Shepherd’s Horn. Most recently, I am very grateful for our most successful Community Thanksgiving Luncheon ever, and for $400 that will help to send children in Papua New Guinea to school!

I am also excited for our future. Even now we are in the final phase of signing contracts and obtaining permits for our new addition, and we anticipate the actual work to begin soon. As we repair the foundation, enhance our entrance, and finally get bathrooms that are accessible to everyone, I look forward to how these needed improvements will transform our facility to match our welcoming spirit.

Our commitment as a congregation is to continue to be good stewards of your gifts. We launched our Stewardship Appeal earlier this year with the goal of growing our giving beyond our immediate needs so that we might pay for the Bathroom Renovations within 3 years. All financial support that we receive this year above our expenses will go towards reducing the amount we need to borrow. However, currently we are behind for the year, both in the pledges we anticipated receiving and in our giving compared to our expenses. Even though our expenses ,year to date, are less than projected, we ended November with a deficit of around $7,300.

As we approach the end of the year, please consider an additional financial gift to Good Shepherd. Also, if you have fallen behind your intended pledge of support, know that we are counting on you, and that your efforts to catch up are greatly appreciated.

Together, we are making a difference – something we could not do apart from your generous financial support. So, on behalf of all whose lives are, and will be, touched because of your giving, let me say thank you!

Peace,

Renovation Project Update Almost there! Our loan has been approved, and the City of Virginia Beach has given its approval to the architectural drawings. We are in the process of signing contracts with the inspectors that are required by the City, as well as signing a final copy of the contract with Dow Construction. Given the upcoming holidays, we anticipate seeing some actual work on our facility starting by the first of the year, if not sooner.

Financial Update

We ended November with a slight deficit, but with your generous financial support in December, we are confident that we will end the year on a positive note.

Even so, our overall all giving is lagging behind from what we anticipated receiving following our excellent spring steward-

ship emphasis. Our hope is to raise enough money, above and beyond our regular “budget” to pay for our renovation project within two to three years. Please consider “catching up” if you have gotten a bit behind. Your gifts make a big difference.

Year-End Reminder As a reminder, any contribution that you wish to have credited towards your 2017 giving, must be in the church office no later

than the morning of December 31 to deposit in 2017. Any contributions received after Dec. 31 will be counted as 2018.

For your convenience, contributions can easily be made online at http://goodshepherdvb.org/ Click on the Online Giving tab for more infor-mation. You can make one-time donations or set up regular weekly or monthly giving. You may also contact the church office 428-4052 for a Simply Giving authorization form, and setup automatic giving in that way.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Altar Guild

Cordially invites you to Our SECOND annual

Wine Gathering From now until the end of January, please consider donating a bottle of wine for Holy Communion. All Wine Gathered will be used in the Sunday Worship Services for the 2018 Worship Year

The wine to be purchased is:

The Cellars of Fairbanks California White Port

Soft, pleasant and full-bodied. A delightfully fruity and well-balanced wine.

Vintner’s 1.5L Collection

Cost at Total Wine: $11.30

The wine will be dedicated on February 4th 2018

during the 9:30 am Service.

Poinsettias & Pigs

We will be collecting $10 donations through Monday, December 11 for POINSETTIAS which will beautify our sanctuary for Christmas, and $10 Donations for PIGS through December 17.

(An entire pig is $30).

Why pigs? For many families in our world, a pig in the pen is like money in the bank. Within months, a tiny piglet grows to weigh over 200 pounds! Animals provide food to eat, fertilizer to grow crops and offspring to sell at market. Should a family have a failed harvest, medical expense or other unexpected financial need, this pig can be sold for much-needed cash.

A form will be included in the bulletin for both Poinsettias and pigs. Also, with each pig donated, a pig will be added to the garland hanging in the narthex.

Bake Sale December 10 Pick up some sweet deals on holiday treats. Choose from an assortment of freshly baked goods. All items can be yours for a donation to the Good Shepherd Youth Fund. This bake sale is sponsored by our Youth, with proceeds going

towards our trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas, this summer.

Parents’ Day Out & Gift Wrapping

On Saturday, December 16th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Youth are sponsoring a Parents’ Day Out. Drop off your children with us, and use this as an opportunity to do some last minute shopping or perhaps go on a lunch date.

We will also be wrapping gifts! Save the bother and stress. Have all your gifts wrapped by a group of enthusiastic, creative, wrapping experts. Both of these services are offered for a donation to our trip to the Youth Gathering in Houston this summer.

We need Advent and the gifts that it can give to us. Advent beckons to us to slow down for just a bit, to make some time and space in our daily routines and in the busyness of our lives, and to let Jesus meet us now with his sustaining and loving presence. It encourages us to prepare our hearts with every bit as much intention and attention as we make ready for the rest of holidays. Advent invites us to let God engage us, so that the “peace on earth” we sing about at Christmas may first be God’s peace in and with us.

This year I invite you to join me on a journey of promise and hope – the journey of Advent – especially if you find yourself these days feeling overwhelmed. I invite you to take time, to make time for prayer, for worship, for waiting. The gift of Christmas – the gift of the Incarnation to which Advent points – is the promise that we do not journey through our lives alone. God is with us! And, as we dare to open ourselves to Christ’s living presence, it is exactly at such times that we discover the greatest gift of all, a Savior!

2017 Thanksgiving Luncheon

A HUGE word of thanks to everyone who helped to make our Community Thanksgiving Luncheon our best event so far. Thanks to your generous donations of food, funding, and time, we were able to serve well over 100 people from our community 187 meals this! In addition, we had 44 people volunteer this year, including those who served directly on Thanksgiving Day, and those whose baked turkeys and pies made the meal happen. Though many of our volunteers are members of Good Shepherd, it is also exciting that many are not. They are folks from the community who just want to make a difference.

GSLC Makes Some Noise!

Thanks to your generosity, our Noisy

Offering on November 19 raised $400!

What a great start towards sponsoring

our students from Papua New Guinea,

Fiona and Lilian Gerong.
