Dear young rheumatologists andresearchers in rheumatology,
We are happy to present you a new issue of
EMEUNEWS to introduce EMEUNET Subgroups
and activities.
The EMEUNET Working Group represents the
EMEUNET Community, undertakes the
organisational role and currently has 43 people
from most of the 21 EULAR Countries. The work
is divided among 7 Subgroups to cover the wide
aims of EMEUNET. From education to peer
mentoring, from country liaison to social media,
EMEUNET Subgroups ensure the growth of
EMEUNET community and promote interaction
and networking among members.
If you would like to join the EMEUNET Working
Group and be actively involved in the Subgroups’
activities keep an eye on emails from EMEUNET
and do not miss next call for application! If you
already applied but have not been selected, this
does not preclude you to apply again the
following year.
In this issue you will also find details about
upcoming educational events.
If this is your first contact with EMEUNET, we
invite you to explore more and join us via our
website (http://emeunet.eular.org). If you are
already part of our community, we kindly remind
you that sharing is caring. Spread the word about
our activities and work and help us reach more
young rheumatologists and researchers.
We hope that you enjoy reading this Newsletter
and would be happy to receive any comments or
contributions for future issues.

EMEUNET is a network of young clinicians and researchers in the field of rheumatology in Europe.
The main objectives of EMEUNET are to enhance the quality of education and to promote
research and create collaborations among emerging rheumatologists and researchers.
None of these objectives could be fulfilled without the work and enthusiasm of the people involved
in the 7 subgroups that form the Working Group of EMEUNET: Education, Peer Mentoring,
Newsletters, Social Media, Visibility, Country Liaisons and Global Affairs.
EMEUNET subgroups are enthusiastically engaged in several activities, and the list of current and
upcoming projects has quickly expanded over the past few months.
With all these initiatives and activities that are presented in this Newsletter, we hope that
EMEUNET will continue to be embraced by the young rheumatology community and more and
more young clinicians and researchers in rheumatology will become involved in rheumatology
education, research and EULAR, making EMEUNET a successful and influential resource that
fosters new and long-term collaborative endeavours and ensures that excellence in European
Rheumatology and EULAR is maintained.

Aim of the Education Subgroup is to improve the clinical and scientific
knowledge and educational support for young rheumatologists/researchers
(trainees and specialists included, < 40 years of age) working in the field of
rheumatology in Europe and beyond. When EMEUNET started its activities, a
large online survey (more than 700 participants) was used to assess the
educational needs of young rheumatologists and researchers. The educational
sub-group was formed to meet these needs, by providing information about
existing educational programmes as well as funding opportunities (by EULAR
and other organizations) and develop new educational opportunities. Over the
past years, EMEUNET has expanded and is now engaged in several
educational activities, in conjunction with ESCET, the EULAR standing
committee of education, EULAR school of rheumatology and other EULAR
committees. Successful ongoing projects are as follows: Undergoing the update
of the EMEUNET website for educational content; EMEUNET-EULAR fellow
sessions- proposing clinical and scientific sessions at the annual EULAR
meetings with special interest for young attenders; EMEUNET-EULAR
ambassador programme, to support 1st time attendees and match them with an
experienced member with similar interests at the annual EULAR congress (see
photos from the 2016 EMEUNET-EULAR ambassador programme in the next
page); selection of EMEUNET members in EULAR recommendation
committees; EMEUNET educational calendar- to inform about educational
events/ deadlines, development of the EMEUNET/EULAR immunology course
the 1st Immunology course in April 2016 (see photos taken at the 1st
Immunology course in the next pages). New projects include exploring the need
of a pan-European educational portfolio (in collaboration with the EULAR
school of rheumatology) and development of a range of useful ‘how to’ guides
for EMEUNET members who are early career researchers. In addition, from this
year EMEUNET is actively involved as co-organizer of the EULAR
epidemiology course (see the group photo of last edition of the course in the
next page and the call for the 2017 course at page 24).

COUNTRY LIAISON
Co-leaders: Rucsandra Dobrota, MD, Javier Rodriguez-
Carrio, MSc PhD
The main aims of the Country Liaison Subgroup are:
1) To encourage and support the Country Liaisons and to maintain an
active network of Country Liaisons: the Country Liaisons network is a key
element in the communication between EMEUNET and the young
rheumatologists and researchers at the national level. Thus, we work
together to spread all relevant information from EMEUNET to the
different countries and also to gain feedback from them to identify the
new needs and opportunities to be satisfied.
2) To promote EMEUNET and to distribute EMEUNET/EULAR
information: we aim to reach and attract the young rheumatologists and
researchers in Europe to become EMEUNET members and to participate
in EMEUNET activities. To this aim, we work closely with our Country
Liaisons, on whom we rely to distribute all the information from
EMEUNET and to perform all kind of activities and events at the national
level aimed to increase the adherence to and visibility of EMEUNET. 3)
To prepare and update EMEUNET advertising materials: we have a very
useful collection of advertising materials (flyers, slides and posters) to
help the Country Liaisons to expand and advertise the EMEUNET
network. 4) To advertise and improve the visibility of the Country Liaisons
activities: we frequently report the different activities organized by the
Country Liaisons on social media and EMEUNET Newsletters, in
collaboration with the EMEUNET Newsletters and Social Media
subgroups. We also organize yearly the Country Liaisons meeting.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Co-leaders: Vasco Romão, MD; Paul Studenic, MD
The EMEUNET social media team is in charge of representing the agenda and
opportunities of EMEUNET via different channels website, emails, Facebook,
Twitter, LinkedIn and Youtube. The core of all information is our website, that
has been online since June 2012 and ever since has had increasing traffic with
an average of over 8000 monthly visitors from around the world. We joined the
social media by launching the EMEUNET Facebook page in February 2014 and
a Twitter feed in September 2014 to ensure close contact with our members. A
YouTube channel is also available since May 2015 and in October 2016 we
launched our profile on LikedIn, to reach a broader audience, especially those
who are not engaged in Twitter or Facebook. Our main goals are to increase
EMEUNET’s visibility and reach out to young rheumatologists and researchers
in Rheumatology across the world. We also have a specific role in being the
“voice” of Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (ARD) on social media platforms, by
closely collaborating with the ARD Team of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) to
enhance the profile and activity of the Journal on these platforms.
We are responsible for managing and updating the content of all Social Media
Platforms: website, Facebook page, Twitter account, email messages, LinkedIn
account and YouTube channel. You can find all the up to date information on
the website and easily connect with other members with similar areas of
interest. Facebook and Twitter are readily accessible platforms, very intuitive,
where you can follow all ongoing activities, deadlines and projects as they take
place! This is why we would like to encourage all our members and also non-
members to join and support these initiatives. Our aims include reaching out to
as many young rheumatologists as possible through all platforms, sharing
scientific and educational content as well as specific opportunities worldwide.
Our ultimate goal is to support EMEUNET in its initiative to keep every young
rheumatologist in the world informed and involved in educational, clinical and
research activities. Through our collaboration with ARD/BMJ, we hope to
promote high quality clinical and research material and engagement of the
wider rheumatology community on social media platforms.

Once registered on our website, you become part of the EMEUNET network. You gain access to the
EMEUNET Membership-database, where you can get in contact with other members, share information or
initiate collaborations. After reaching the EMEUNET age limit (40 years), you will become part of the Alumni
Network, with a specific database and still keep access to all EMEUNET content.
- Provide important links & tools
The website provides important research/clinical links for you, which should simplify your daily life as a
rheumatologist or scientist. We have links to online tools, funding opportunities and all important
Rheumatology Journals.
- Mailing service
After becoming an EMEUNET member you will receive regular updates (job offers, courses and many
more) and our EMEUNET newsletters (e.g. EULAR and ACR highlights) by mail.
- YouTube
In May 2015 we started a YouTube channel, where you can find interviews with fascinating rheumatologists
and short video introductions about our different working groups to explore EMEUNET further. In the future
we will increase our video archive with short reports on events and rheumatology related videos.
- Twitter Education
In addition to keeping our members up to date on Rheumatology news and events we also run a yearly
Twitter course in the lead up to EULAR. The course runs over 10 consecutive weekdays. Each day, each
participant is emailed a short task followed by details of how to complete this task (starting with setting up a
Twitter account). These tasks take 5-10 minutes so there is no big time commitment. It has proved
successful in the last two years with loads of our members using this course to become familiar with
Twitter.

NEWSLETTER
Leader: Alessia Alunno, MD
The EMEUNET Newsletter ‘EMEUNEWS’ is aimed at spreading any
information considered useful to young rheumatologists/researchers of
the EMEUNET community. Together with EMEUNET´s Social Media,
EMEUNEWS can be considered the “voice” of EMEUNET. EMEUNEWS
is released monthly with 11 issues per year. Newsletters promote
EMEUNET’s visibility, by introducing working group members (August
issue) and country liaisons (March issue) as well as by showing the
different activities of the Subgroups (February issue). They also report
about Do-Not-Miss Abstracts (May and October issues) and Abstract
Highlights (July and December issues) of EULAR and ACR and provide
press reviews to highlight most recent rheumatology literature (January,
April and September issues). All EMEUNEWS issues also include
general information about EMEUNET, upcoming events, abstract
deadlines, fellowships, courses, grants, etc. Recently, a new format of
EMEUNEWS, the EMEUNET one year in review, has been started to
provide an overview of EMEUNET achievements and growth over the
past year (June issue).

EMEUNET Peer Review Mentoring for Rheumatology Journals
Due to the relevance of the peer review system in the scientific career, EMEUNET
started in 2012 a collaboration with the leading journal in rheumatology, the
Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, aimed to improve the peer review skills of
your rheumatologists and researchers. Since then, this innovative program has
been received with enormous attention by all the EMEUNET community and it
has been continuously growing. Recently, we developed an online survey to
further improve this program.
For more information you can visit: http://emeunet.eular.org/peer_mentoring.cfm
The EMEUNET Peer Mentoring subgroup is actively working on finishing the last
steps before launching the next edition. This new edition will bring important
novel aspects, new top-level mentors and a broader selection of research
topics, as well as a higher number of places available.
The call for the next edition will be launched in the coming weeks, and it will
be announced in the EMEUNET Social Media, website and by e-mail.

GLOBAL AFFAIRS
Co-leaders: Christophe Richez, MD PhD; Marie Kostine,
MD
The new objectives of the Global Affairs subgroup are:
To interact with Young PARE, a subgroup of PARE (People with
Arthritis/Rheumatism in Europe) aiming to communicate the specific
needs of young people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases;
To develop interactions between other Young Specialists
Organisations for improving the management of our patients and
gathering our strengths for a better translational research on diseases
shared by our specialties.
We met during the last EULAR congress few representatives of young
PARE and decided to develop strong interactions in the next future,
especially in social media and eHealth fields.
We also met, during a dedicated meeting organised by EULAR, the
chairs of Y-ECCO (Young-European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation),
young PRES (Paediatric Rheumatology European Society), and the
Young Nephrologists’ Platform.
During this one-and-a-half-hour meeting, we exchanged information
about our different organisations, the content of our working groups, our
interaction with our mentors, and how we could work together in the
future. We believe that we could extend our interests, collaboration and
programmes far beyond. We are currently preparing a survey to know
how young clinicians see multi/transdisciplinarity.

THE EULAR ULTRASOUND COURSES
The aim of this annual multi-level course is to cover the whole spectrum of conditions in which
musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSUS) could be used in rheumatology practice and research.
The advanced course (for up to 50 participants with considerable experience in MSUS) focuses on difficult
issues within MSUS and emerging research fields in MSUS (contrast enhanced, 3D, quantification of
inflammation). This includes time for discussion with expert rheumatologists and radiologists in MSUS.
The intermediate course (for up to 50 participants with some experience in MSUS) aims at consolidating
standardised MSUS scanning methods according to EULAR guidelines, as well as describing and
identifying musculoskeletal lesions/abnormalities by US and knowing the role of MSUS in different
musculoskeletal pathologies (inflammatory, degenerative and/or traumatic). The standardised approach in
the study of the various anatomic regions as well as the future development of US technique and its role as
a research tool is discussed.
NEW: The EULAR-PReS paediatric musculoskeletal ultrasound course, is a combination of lectures
and workshops on the principal applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound in children, ultrasound scanning
of paediatric joints and basic ultrasound abnormalities in children with rheumatic diseases. The course is
recommended to rheumatologists or paediatricians with special interest in paediatric musculoskeletal
ultrasound.
The 24th EULAR Ultrasound Courses will take place on 11-13 June 2017,
The PRes US course will take place on 12-14 June 2017
All courses in Madrid, Spain
