SPECIAL EARTH DAY ISSUE!
94.7 KTWV
In honor of Earth Day, April 22nd, this issue of 94.7 KTWV, The WAVEs "MusicLetter" is dedicated to making the planet a better place to live. KTWV's yeans of community involvement have taught us a very important lesson — Southern Californians care about the environment. The WAVE has responded by placing thousands of WAVE trash barrels on the beaches? providing WAVE recyclable Adcan refuse receptacles for dozens of public events? and dispensing a continual stream of environ mental information through "WAVE Information", "The WAVE On-Line"and KTWV's public service announcements*
Like 94.7, KTWV, The WAVE, actor Ted Dan son, of "Cheers", works to educate the public about environmental issues through his role as President of the American Oceans Campaign. We asked him to share some of his thoughts with you.
About three years ago, 1 took my
young daughters down to Santa Monica to play in the ocean. When we arrived at the beach we found signs informing us not to enter the polluted waters. My little girls were disappointed, and they asked me why they couldn't play in the ocean. I couldn't give them a satisfactory answer so I decided to find out why.
My wife Casey and I did a lot of research and spoke to a great many knowledgeable people about the pollution problems facing Santa Monica Bay. What we found out shocked and saddened us. Casey and I founded the American Oceans Campaign to concentrate on the specific issues of ocean and coastal pollution.
The damage to our coastal waters from pollution is widespread. Human waste, oil spills, plastic debris and medical waste foul beaches around the country. Because of pollution, 40% of the total U.S. shellfish producing areas are either closed entirely or restricted,
and offshore oil development threatens some of me most environmentally sensitive areas of America's coasts.
Probably the most important thing the average person can do is become politically awore and active. Register to vote and find out who your elected officials are. Write them and let them know you are interested in environmental issues and then wafch them) Write them positive letters when they do environmentally responsible things and be quick to criticize when they don't. You'd be surprised how much just a little pressure will influence elected officials.
I'd like to thank KTWV for this opportunity, ond l congratulate The WAVE and you for working to dean up the environment*
Ted Danson

Listen to 94.7, KTWV, The WAVE during the week forJ 'The WAVE On-Line". This environmentally- oriented feature, hosted by David Hirsch, offers information on ways you can make the planet a better place. The following tips are culled from previous editions of "The WAVE On-Line".
1. Drive less. The average commute is less than five miles. Car pool, bicycle, take the bus, or pi an on walking. Obviously, in Southern California you have to drive, just try to cut down on trips when you can.
2. Plant trees. Smog is a continuing problem and by planting a tree you can help clean the air. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and simultaneously provide oxygen. Trees also make your neighborhood more beautiful.
3. Recycle. Bundle up your newspapers. Bag up your aluminum and glass containers and bring them to a recycling station nearyou. Also get into the habit of using products that are made of recycled materials.
4. Be water smart. Check around the house and make sure that you install water-saving
devices In the shower. Use low flush toilets. Water your lawn at night and then only when necessary. And use a broom instead of the hose to clean sidewalks. Remember, we live in a natural desert and have to import most of our water.
5. Stay informed. Continue listening to 94.7, KTWV, The WAVE for environmental information. You can alsodig deeper by picking up the books "How To Make The World A Better Place" by Jeffrey Hollender, "Save Our Planet" by Diane MacEachern or obtaining "101 Ways To Help Heal the Earth" published by the Greenhouse Crisis Foundation and available for $5.00 by writing 1130 17th St., NW, Washington D.C. 20036

Tropical rain forests ploy a critical role in our everyday lives and are essential to continued human survival on the planet. We use tropical rain forest products when we read a book, drive a car, drink coffee, eat chocolate or take a pill. The list of industrial, medicinal and agricultural uses is tong and impressive. Lass of the rainforests will severely affect the global climate as well, The trees in those forests consume carbon dioxide, an excess of which is thought to be responsible far global warming, We are culling down the rain forests at a phenomenal rate to make room for short¬ lived agricultural efforts and mostly to clear land for cattle grazing — beef that in large part ends up on American lables. In the spirit of The WAVI's Earth Day "MusicLetter'", KTWV's Music Director Monica Logan, in an exclusive interview, spoke with STING about his efforts to save the rain forests.
Q: What can we do to save the rain forests?
STING; The rain forests are, unfortunately, a very, very difficult issue. There are no miracles. It's not a question of money end it's not a question of it happening tomorrow. Hopefully over the next ten years the world can come together to save them. IBs going to take professionals and regular people caring.
Q; How can the average person help?
STING: There are a number of organizations that are working to save the rain forests — The Rain Forest Foundation, of which I'm a part. There's also the Rain Forest Action Network which deals in cultural survival issues. Both these organizations are doing a good job and I highly recommend people participate in them. The most important thing you can do is leorn about the rainforests. Talk about them with your friends. It's a hard and difficult issue, but don't let that stop you* We've got to do something.
Q: Considering you've donated a good deal of time and money to the rain forest issue, ore you considering taking a rest from the controversy?
STING: I' ve spent a lot of time in the last two years sounding this thing off and raising a little money. What I don't want to do Is throw some money at a problem and walk away from it. 1 felt it was better ta set up a structured organization to encourage professionals like doctors and biologists to study the problem and came up with solutions. It's important that the money raised for the cause be put to a goad purpose over a long period* It's not very exciting. It won't get you headlines tomorrow, but it's better than just dumping money and turning your back. I suppose I'm going to be involved in this for a long time.until they throw me out* I 'm doing what I can and I urge all The WAVE s listeners to do the same.
