Homai means to pass, or give (to me), it’s agood word to know and can be used quiteoften. The examples below are using some ofthe kupu we’ve been over in the past weeksand the last sentence will have a blank spacewhere you can insert your own kupu that youcan find the translation for in an English toMaori dictionary (there’s a good one onlinewww.maoridictionary.co.nz).

You’ll also see the use of ‘te’ and ‘nga’ inthe sentances. Te is singular — te awa (theriver). Nga is plural — nga awa (the rivers).• Homai te poitarawhiti (give / pass me thenetball).• Homai te heihei (give / pass me thechicken).• Homai nga niho (give / pass me the teeth).• Homai te / nga

I hope you have a go at finding some kuputo use in your own sentences. Even practicingusing te and nga is a good exercise. Kia kahatatou ki te korero Maori.

SUMMER OATS creators (from left) Elizabeth Abernethy, Olivia Cole, Rachael Ryan and Emily Wilkins.

Creation comes withsilver lining for teamBY CATHY ASPLIN

‘Each member of theteam had a different

strength, such as designskills, photographic

skills and oralpresentation skills.’TEACHER LYNNE ROWE

Food technology studentsfrom Te Awamutu Collegepicked up a Team Silver Chal-lenge Award in the 2014 CrestStudent Product DevelopmentChallenge.

The challenge is designed toe n c o u r a g e s t u d e n t s t o b einnovative, creative and to prob-lem solve in food science andtechnology.

It requires teams of Year11/12/13 students, who arestudying NCEA science and/orfood technology, to develop anew food product for an industryclient.

In this case the Te AwamutuC o l l e g e t e a m ( E l i z a b e t hAbernethy, Emily Wilkins,Olivia Cole, Rachael Ryan) waschallenged to create a healthyoats-based food bar for MotherEarth with support from their

mentor, Rene Jekel of ProlifeFoods.

The Te Awamutu Collegeteam started by surveying otherstudents about flavour taste pre-ferences.

They found summer fruitswere a popular addition to bars,so made the decision to includethem in their ‘Summer Oats’ bar.

The recipe also included someof the ‘ancient grains’ such asspelt, flaxseed and puffed millet.

These were combined withfruit chunks and apple sauce (toreplace egg), allowing it to beconsumed by a broad group ofconsumers.

Creating the bar was only asmall portion of the challenge, however.

The team had to undertakemarket research, develop pack-ing, create a nutritional profile, produce a report and a poster, aswell as presenting their findingsand products to judges.

Teacher Lynne Rowe says thegroup worked well together onsuch a demanding project.

“Each member of the teamhad a different strength, such asdesign skills, photographicskills and oral presentationskills. They combined theirstrengths effectively, whichresulted in them deservedlyachieving the Team Silver Chal-lenge Award.”

Kawhia power outages put adamper on many holiday plans

Kawhia holidaymakers andlocals had their Labour Weekendplans curtailed when a major poweroutage hit the village.

Power first went out soon before7pm Saturday and it wasn’t fullyrestored until midday Sunday.

Waipa Networks customerservices manager Kerry Watsonsays it was an unusual event andstaff are still not sure what actuallycaused the outage.

A theory is the extra load of theholiday weekend, but that has yet tobe confirmed.

Mr Watson says there wereintermittent failures on the net-

work and it was frustrating forcustomers and staff.

Teams isolated various parts ofthe network to tray and identify theproblem, and by about 6am Sundayhad all customers reconnectedexcept those on the main sub-station to the central village.

A generator was brought in toserve this area and was supplyingpower by midday.

The generator was disconnectedTuesday night and engineers arechecking equipment anddownloading data to find outexactly what went wrong.

As this edition went to press, Mr

Watson says there were still noanswers, but Waipa Networks con-tinue working to find the cause sothey can take measures to ensure itdoesn’t happen again.

Reports from Kawhia say it wasfrustrating and at times chaotic, especially at a busy time whenbusinesses start to improve turn-over after the winter months.

Kawhia Beachside Escape Hol-iday Park was reasonably full and, apart from having no lights orelectric cooking facilities, showersweren’t working. In town the pub, garage and restaurants were allclosed until midday Sunday.

Kawhia events fund MS WaikatoMS Waikato will be the recipi-

ent of funds raised at two eventsthis Sunday in the Kawhia region.

The second annual KawhiaCruise takes place, with the aim offilling the road from Hamilton tothe seaside village with vintageand classic cars and hot rods.

After a short stop over in the

village, the cruise heads to OparauRoadhouse — to arrive about11.30am for a noon lunch.

ROSETOWN Funeral DirectorSteve Hopgood.

BY CATHY ASPLIN

A private chapel and revampedoffice will be two of the newfeatures on show at RosetownFunerals’ open days.

But one of the other new‘additions’ isn’t so easy to spot.

Rosetown Funerals directorSteve Hopgood recently completedhis New Zealand Diploma inFuneral Directing, making himthe only Te Awamutu funeraldirector to have completed thequalification.

He says the intensive courseover two years covered a widerange of issues and legalities.

“It covered everything fromadvance planning of funerals tocurrent laws and requirements.

“It was a huge investment interms of time and funds, but onewhich I think was well worth it.

“I feel it’s important to have thequalification and gives me fullmembership of the Funeral Direc-tors Association of New Zealand.”

Mr Hopgood can now superviseother funeral directors and is indemand training people aroundthe country in the art of recon-struction.

He is well know in theatricalcircles for his abilities with filmand theatrical makeup, but hasalso been able to utilise this skillin funeral directing.

“I recently spoke to the Probusmeeting about film and theatricalmakeup and how it is utilised infuneral directing.

“It was nice to be asked tospeak at the meeting and is justone of the ways Sheree and I areinvolved in the community. TeAwamutu has been hugely sup-portive of us, so we’ve decided tostage another open day. We’ve hadan amazing response in the past.”

This year the public can visitthe Ohaupo premises of RosetownFunerals on November 14-15,between 9am-4pm.

Directors Steve and ShereeHopgood say they were taken alittle by surprise by the numberswho visited during the past twoyears.

“There were a lot of people whowere curious about what we doand many had questions aboutwhat happens following the deathof a loved one. Some were unsureabout what was required andwhat was optional.

“Others were interested toknow how and where they couldstage a funeral. The open days area chance to meet us, see ourpremises and find out more aboutthe process.”

OUR NEW DRAFT 10 YEAR PLAN IS NOW BEING PREPARED.

LET S GET

ENGAGED

IT LOOKS AT

MAJORPROJECTS

PLANNED FORWAIPA

FROM 2015-2024. THE BIG ISSUE IS WATER.Over the past three decades Council’s focus has been on keeping costs down and managing what we have.

We’re now at crunch point. Ever increasing demand, wear-and-tear and population growth has pushed our town water systems to capacity.

Meanwhile our wastewater systems need to be renewed and upgraded to keep up with the district’s growth and environmental rules.

It’s time for decisions and for major investment.

Our new draft 10 Year Plan is likely to focus on water issues. It involves big numbers and we want the community involved in the debate. We’re likely to propose spending around $200 million on water, wastewater and stormwater upgrades to cater for our growing towns.

IMPROVING COMMUNITIESBeyond water, the draft 10 Year Plan will propose exciting new amenities and improvements, such as the new Cambridge pool complex and Te Awamutu’s new library.

There are also plans to develop cycleways and improvements planned for our towns to make then even more attractive and liveable.

Financially, the draft Plan may suggest some changes to development contributions, and the way we rate multi-dwelling properties.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?Over the coming weeks we’ll be highlighting projects being considered and the issues, trade-offs and challenges behind those projects. Tell us if we’re on the right track.

You’ll find more information on our website. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook to stay updated on new information as it arrives.

C’mon Waipa. Let’s work together on this one. Let’s get engaged.Because it’s our future we’re talking about

AGE GROUP winner Benwar Brownlee (inset) celebrates his victory atRosebank Speedway.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Solo bike whiz kid BenwarBrownlee made a flying start to theseason winning the under 16 yearsKing of Rosebank title.

The Te Awamutu 13-year-oldwas in a class of his own, winningas he liked over the four laps of the320m Rosebank Speedway track inAuckland.

In order to extend himself on his200cc Honda, Brownlee handi-capped himself by three-quarters ofa lap — yet still managed to lap allthe other riders.

It is the third year running thathe has won the event.

He is now setting his sights oncompeting in the junior division ofthe four-day Burt Munro Challengein Christchurch next month.

Brownlee featured in the Courierin December 2011 after winningSpeedway New Zealand’s YouthGold Cup 125cc Championship atRosebank Speedway.

Aged 10 at the time, Brownleewon all five races by at least threequarters of a lap.

As well as receiving the GoldCup, he won a helmet and sash.

The youngster gets to race withmulti-times world champion IvanMauger’s signature on his bike, having met him on a visit to TeAwamutu in 2011 to sign copies ofhis book ‘Ivan Mauger, The Will ToWin’.

In January, 2012, the rapidyoung racer was invited toMauger’s Training School inChristchurch.

“I learned a lot from my coupleof days at the training camp,” saysBrownlee.

“Each time I compete I try andremember some of the great man’stips and put them into practise.”

Brownlee has been racing since

he was four. He saw an article in theCourier inviting young riders to‘have a go’ at Kihikihi Speedwayand hasn’t looked back.

He boxed above his weight as an11-year-old in 2012, upstaging all butone of his much older and moreexperienced opposition in the jun-ior class of the Auckland SummerCup at Rosebank Speedway.

Despite a DNF when falling inthe second of four races, he finishedrunner-up in the prestigious eventfor riders aged 16 years and under.

The race was won byAucklander Jak Turner, a regularrider at Kihikihi.

Brownlee was second in the firstrace, first in the third race andsecond in the final when finishing acouple of seconds behind Turner.

“It’s all about getting out of thegates the quickest,” Brownlee

commented.“I managed to get the better of

Jak at the start of race three andwent on to win.”

The Te Awamutu College Year 9student capped a stellar 2013-14season in June this year by takingout Junior Rider of the Year atRosebank Speedway.

Winning his class at the King ofRosebank meeting was a highlightlast season.

He also won the Auckland Jun-ior Championship, Summer SoloCup and North Island Junior Cham-pionship, as well as finishingsecond in class at the Remembrancemeeting.

McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedwaysolo bike rep and former nationalsolo bike coach, Geoff Boxell saysBrownlee showed excellent apti-tude from the very beginning.

Once you've played and worked with the best, there's no settling for less, That's why Tony Woodcock kits up on a Suzuki. And just like New Zealands's most capped prop, the DR200 Trojan has measured up to the test for years. With a tough 200cc engine, greater suspension travel, higher ground clearance, and a lower seat height than any of Its competitors, it's rugged, reliable and easy around the paddock. The 13-litre fuel tank means it won't be stopping half way through the game. When you add top level details like alloy hand guards, rubber insulated steel footpegs, dual side stands and a large12v headlight it’s clear no other farm bike can compete.
