Low Fuel Consumption. The C4.4 iselectronically controlled and uses thenew Cat Common Rail Fuel System andfuel pump. This combination providesoutstanding fuel consumption duringboth production and travel. When thesystem recognizes roading applicationthe engine adjusts to the most efficientsystem operating point to save fuelwithout compromising road performance.

Low Noise, Low Vibration. The Cat C4.4design improves operator comfort byreducing sound and vibration.

Cooling System. An electronicallycontrolled, hydraulic motor drives avariable speed on-demand fan for enginecoolant and hydraulic oil. The optimumfan speed is determined based on coolantand hydraulic oil temperature resultingin reduced fuel consumption and lowersound levels. The electronic enginecontrol continuously compensatesfor the varying fan load, providingconsistent net power, regardless ofoperating conditions.

One-Touch Low Idle Control.The two-stage, one-touch AutomaticEngine Speed Control reduces enginespeed if no operation is performed,maximizing fuel efficiency andreducing sound levels.

Waste Handling Package. The WasteHandling Package has been specificallydeveloped for Cat Wheel Excavatorsworking in waste transfer stations orother extremely dusty applications.This option features the following:

• An automatic, hydraulic reversiblefan that reverses airflow after aset interval, manually adjustablebetween 5 and 60 minutes with aswitch located inside the cab.

• A special dense wire mesh coolingsystem hood further reduces radiatorclogging.

• Two cyclone filters provide cleanfiltered air to the engine compartment,air cleaner, aftercooler and airconditioner condenser.

EngineBuilt for power, reliability, low maintenance, excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

Dedicated Swing Pump. A dedicatedvariable displacement piston pump andfixed displacement piston motor powerthe swing mechanism. This closedhydraulic circuit maximizes swingperformance without reducing power tothe other hydraulic functions, resultingin smoother combined movements.

Heavy Lift Mode. This mode maximizeslifting performance by boosting thelifting capability of the excavator by7 percent. Heavy loads can be easilymoved in the full working range of themachine, maintaining excellent stability.

Adjustable Hydraulic Sensitivity.This function allows the operator toadjust the aggressiveness of the machineaccording to the application. For precisionwork, one of four different levels ofaggressiveness can be pre-selected.

Proportional Auxiliary Hydraulics.Versatility of the hydraulic system canbe expanded to utilize a wide varietyof hydraulic work tools using multiplevalve options.

• The Multi-Combined Valve is thecore of the Tool Control System,allowing the operator to select up toten pre-programmed work tools fromthe monitor. These preset hydraulicparameters support either one-wayor two-way flow. The joystick slidingswitches allow modulated control ofthe work tool.

• A dedicated Hammer circuit is thebest option for tools that requireone-way flow only, and do notrequire the flexibility providedby the Multi-Combined Valve.

• The Medium Pressure FunctionValve provides proportional flowthat is ideal for tilting buckets orrotating tools.

• A new feature for the D-Series WheelExcavators is the optional secondHigh Pressure valve. In combinationwith the Multi-Combined Valve,it provides the possibility to operatethe machine with work tools or inapplications requiring a third auxiliaryhydraulic function, such as a tilting/rotating quick coupler.

Stick Regeneration Circuit. The stickregeneration circuit increases efficiencyand helps increase controllability forhigher productivity and loweroperating costs.

Quick Coupler. The machine can beoptionally equipped with a dedicatedhydraulic circuit to operate hydraulicquick couplers.

Hydraulic Snubbers. Caterpillar integratesits cylinder snubber technology into allWheel Excavator boom, stick and bucketcylinders. These snubbers help cushionshocks, reduce sound and increasecylinder life.

Operator Comfort

Interior Operator Station. Improvedvisibility and ergonomics are some ofthe many new features of the D-SeriesWheel Excavators. The pressurizedoperator station provides maximumspace and is designed for simplicity andfunctionality. Frequently used switchesare centralized and are situated on theright-hand switch console. The left-handseat console controls dozer blade and/oroutriggers, and is tiltable for easy accessto the cab. The fully automatic climatecontrol adjusts temperature and air flowfor exceptional operator comfort.Other comfort features include a cigarlighter, ashtray, drink/bottle holder,magazine rack and integrated mobilephone holder.

Cab Construction. The exterior designuses thick steel tubing along the bottomperimeter of the cab, improving theresistance to fatigue and vibration.This design allows the falling objectguards to be bolted directly to the cab.The cab shell is attached to the framewith rubber mounts that limit vibrationand sound transmitted from the frame,substantially reducing interiornoise levels.

Viewing Area. To maximize visibility,all glass is affixed directly to the cab,eliminating the use of window frames.Choice of fixed or easy-to-open splitfront windshield meets operatorpreference and application conditions.

• The 50/50 split front windshieldallows both upper and lower portionsto be stored in an overhead positionand features the one-touch actionrelease system.

• The 70/30 split front windshieldstores the upper portion above theoperator. The lower front windshieldfeatures a rounded design to maximizedownward visibility and improveswiper coverage. Also features theone-touch action release system.

• The fixed front windshield comeswith high impact resistantlaminated glass.

• A unique large skylight withoutcross bar provides superb upwardvisibility. The retractable sunscreenblocks direct sunlight.

Monitor. The new compact colormonitor displays information in locallanguage that is easy to read andunderstanding. Functions include:

– 5 programmable “Quick Access”buttons for one-touch selection offavorite functions.

– Filter and oil change warnings aredisplayed when the number of hoursreaches the maintenance interval.

– Tool select function allows theoperator to select up to 10 pre-definedhydraulic work tools.

– Adjustable braking characteristicsenable the operator to select three levelsof travel motor retarder aggressivenesswhen releasing the travel pedal.

– Provides a rear camera view that isactivated through the monitor menu.The optional camera is mounted onthe counterweight.

New Deluxe Seat. The new optionaldeluxe seat, equipped with an activeseat climate system, improves operatorcomfort. Cooled air flows through theseat cushions to reduce body perspiration.On cold days, a two-step seat heater keepsthe operator warm and comfortable.The fully adjustable seat with adjustablelumbar support automatically adjuststo the driver’s weight providing a morerelaxed and comfortable environment.

Heated Mirrors. Another new featureis electrically heated mirrors, increasingsafety and visibility in cold conditions.

Wipers. The parallel wiper systemmaximizes visibility in poor weatherconditions. The wiper virtually coversthe entire front windshield, cleaningthe operator’s immediate line of sight.

Lunch Box. A large, cooled storagecompartment is located behind theoperator’s seat. The compartmentprovides sufficient room to store itemssuch as a lunch box. An optional coversecures the contents during machineoperation.

Foot Pedals. Two-way pedals for traveland auxiliary circuits provide increasedfloor space, reducing the need to changepositions. The foot pedal for auxiliaryhigh-pressure circuit can be locked inthe off position and used as a footrestfor greater operator comfort.

Heavy-Duty Axles and Stabilizers.The D-Series Wheel Excavatorundercarriage with pin on/bolt ondesign provides excellent flexibility,rigidity and long life. Effective hydraulicline routing, transmission protection andheavy-duty axles make the undercarriageperfect for wheel excavator applications.The front axle offers wide oscillatingand steering angles. The transmissionis mounted directly on the rear axle forprotection and optimum ground clearance.

Advanced Disc Brake System. The discbrake system acts directly on the hubinstead of the drive shaft to avoidplanetary gear backlash. This solutioneliminates the rocking effect associatedwith working free on wheels. The axledesign lowers maintenance and lifetimecosts. Oil change intervals are at2,000 working hours, further reducingowner and operator costs.

Drive Line Concept. The rear mountedtransmission and robust drive linedesign, delivers excellent groundclearance for all off-road applications.

Fenders. The optional fenders provideexcellent coverage of the front and reartires, protecting the machine from mudand dirt. Water cannot splash up onthe wind screen or cooler. The fendersfurther protect the machine from stonesand debris being thrown up by the tires,providing additional safety for themachine, other vehicles and personnelworking close to the excavator.

Adjustable Travel Alarm. An adjustabletravel alarm is available to warnpeople when the machine is moving.Three settings can be selected throughthe monitor.

• Auto mode – alarm will stopsounding immediately when themachine is no longer traveling,or has been sounding for anuninterrupted 10-second interval.

• Standard mode – alarm operatesconstantly during moving, withonly manual cancellation.

• Off mode – Travel Alarm is disabled.

UndercarriageUndercarriage and axle design provides maximum strength, flexibility and mobility on wheels.

Industrial Stick

Sticks. Four different stick lengths areoffered to match different applicationrequirements:

• Short stick (2.0 m/6 ft 6 in) formaximum breakout force and liftingcapability.

• Medium stick (2.4 m/7 ft 6 in) forgreater crowd force and lift capacity.

• Long stick (2.6 m/8 ft 6 in) forgreater depth and reach requirements.

• Industrial stick (3.1 m/10 ft 2 in) foruse with free-swinging grapples inmaterial handling and industrialapplications.

Design. Booms and sticks are welded,box section structures with thick,multi-plate fabrications in high stressareas, for rugged performance andlong service life.

Flexibility. The choice of two boomsand four sticks provides the rightbalance of reach and digging forcesfor all applications.

One-Piece Boom. The one-piece boomfits best for all standard applicationssuch as truck loading and digging.A unique straight section in the curveof the side plate reduces stress flow andhelps increase boom life.

Variable Adjustable (VA) Boom.The VA boom offers improved rightside visibility and machine roadingbalance. When working in tight quartersor lifting heavy loads, the VA boomoffers the best flexibility.

Offset Boom. The offset boom addsmajor advantages as well as a highlevel of versatility. The large offsetdimensions (left 2460 mm (8 ft 1 in)and right 2760 mm (9 ft 1 in)) enableyou to dig along walls, over obstacles,grade while driving and dig under laidpipe. This combination coupled with atiltable ditch cleaning bucket allows youto operate a highly versatile machine.

Booms and SticksDesigned for maximum flexibility to keep production high on all jobs.

Work Tools. Caterpillar work tools aredesigned to function as an integral partof your excavator and to provide thebest possible performance in yourparticular application. All worktools are performance-matched toCat machines.

Quick Couplers. Quick Couplers enablethe operator to simply release one worktool and connect to another, makingyour hydraulic excavator highly versatile.Productivity also increases, as a carrierno longer needs to be idle between jobs.Caterpillar offers hydraulic and spindlequick coupler versions.

Buckets. Caterpillar offers a wide rangeof specialized buckets, each designedand tested to function as an integral partof your excavator. Buckets feature thenew Caterpillar K Series™ GroundEngaging Tools.

Hammers. Cat hammer series deliververy high blow rates, increasing theproductivity of your tool carriers indemolition and construction applications.Wide oil flow acceptance ranges makethe Caterpillar hammers suitable for awide range of carriers and provide asystem solution from one safe source.

Orange Peel Grapples. The Orange PeelGrapple is constructed of high-strength,wear-resistant steel, with a low andcompact design that makes it ideal fordump clearance. There are severalchoices of tine and shell versions.

Multi-Grapples. The Multi-Grapplewith unlimited left and right rotationis the ideal tool for stripping, sorting,handling and loading. The powerfulclosing force of the grab shells combinedwith fast opening/closing time ensuresrapid cycle time which translates tomore tons per hour.

Multi-Processors. Thanks to its singlebasic housing design, the Multi-Processorseries of hydraulic demolition equipmentmakes it possible to use a range of jawsets that can handle any demolition job.The Multi-Processor is the most versatiledemolition tool on the market.

Vibratory Plate Compactors.Cat compactors are performance-matchedto Cat machines, and integrate perfectlywith the Cat hammer line – brackets andhydraulic kits are fully interchangeablebetween hammers and compactors.

Shears. Cat shears provide superiorand effective scrap processing, andare highly productive in demolitionenvironments. Shears are compatiblewith a matching Cat excavator, andbolt-on brackets are available for eitherstick or boom-mounted options.

Work ToolsA wide variety of Work Tools help optimize machine performance. Purpose designed andbuilt to Caterpillar’s high durability standards.

Joystick Steering. The unique joysticksteering option enables an operator toreposition the machine while travelingin first gear by the use of the sliderswitch on the right joystick. This enablesthe operator to keep both hands onthe joysticks while simultaneouslymoving the implements and traveling.The operator can do more precise workfaster with increased safety aroundthe machine.

Tool Control. The integrated Tool Controlsystem allows the operator to select up to10 pre-set combinations. This eliminatesthe need to re-set the hydraulic parameterseach time a tool is changed. Individualflow and pressure can be programmedeasily as well as one-way/two-wayhydraulic functions. Each of theten-programmed tools can even begiven a specific name. The uniqueCat proportional sliding switchesand optional auxiliary pedal providemodulation to the tool to makeprecision work easy.

Ride Control. New for the D Series, theride control system improves operatorcomfort and allows the machine to travelfaster over rough terrain with improvedride quality for the operator. The ridecontrol system features accumulatorsacting as shock absorbers to dampen thefront part motion. Ride control can beactivated through a button located onthe soft switch panel in the cab.

Control Settings. There are 2 selectablecontrol settings and one automatictravel setting. The new automatic travelmode is activated with a button in theright hand console. In this setting, thetransmission will automatically shiftup or down, depending on the speedconditions. The operator can choose thebest power setting for both engine andhydraulic power versus fuel efficiency.

• Economy Mode – used for lifting,pipe setting, grading, slope finishingand precise work while reducingfuel consumption.

• Power Mode – used for normal truckloading and digging applications,trenching or hammer use.

• Travel Mode – automatically setwhen the travel pedal is actuated.It provides maximum speed anddrawbar pull.

Product Link. Product Link can assistwith Fleet Management to keep trackof hours, location, security and producthealth. The machine is pre-wired toaccept Product Link systems to beinstalled in the field. Product Link isalso available as a factory installedattachment.

Machine Security. An optional MachineSecurity System is available from thefactory. This system controls who canoperate the machine when, and utilizesspecific keys to prevent unauthorizedmachine use.

VersatilityA wide variety of optional factory-installed attachments are available to enhanceperformance and improve job site management.

Ground Level Maintenance. Caterpillardesigned its D-Series Wheel Excavatorswith the operator and service technicianin mind. Gull-wing doors, withpneumatically-assisted lift cylinders,effortlessly lift up to allow criticalmaintenance to be performed quicklyand efficiently while maintainingoperator safety.

Extended Service Intervals.The D-Series Wheel Excavator serviceand maintenance intervals have beenextended to reduce machine servicetime, increase machine availability andreduce operating costs. Using S•O•SSM

Scheduled Oil Sampling analysis,hydraulic oil change intervals can beextended up to 4,000 hours. Enginecoolant change intervals are 12,000 hourswith Cat Extended Life Coolant.

Self-Monitoring System with Auto-Diagnostics. The electronic engine andmachine controllers provide detaileddiagnostic capability for the servicetechnicians. The ability to store activeand intermittent indicators simplifiesproblem diagnosis and reduces totalrepair time, resulting in improvedmachine availability and loweroperating cost.

Engine Inspection. The engine can beaccessed from both ground level and theupper structure. The longitudinal layoutensures that all daily inspection itemscan be accessed from ground level.

Front Compartment. The frontcompartment hood can be openedvertically, providing outstanding groundlevel access to the batteries, air-to-airafter cooler, air conditioner condenserand the air cleaner filter.

Easy to Clean Coolers. Flat fins on allcoolers reduce clogging, making iteasier to remove debris. The maincooling fan and air conditioner condenserare both hinged for easier cleaning.

Swing-out Air Conditioner Condenser.The Air Conditioning condenser swingsout horizontally to allow completecleaning on both sides as well as excellentaccess to the air-to-air after cooler.

Air Filter. Caterpillar air filters eliminatethe use of service tools, reducingmaintenance time. The air filter featuresa double-element construction with wallflow filtration in the main element andbuilt-in mini-cyclone precleaners forsuperior cleaning efficiency. The airfilters are constantly monitored foroptimum performance. If airflowbecomes restricted, a warning is displayedby the way of the in-cab monitor.

Simplified and easy maintenance save you time and money.

Serviceability

Capsule Filter. The hydraulic returnfilter, a capsule filter, preventscontaminants from entering the systemwhen the hydraulic oil is changed.

Fuel Filters. Cat high efficiency fuelfilters with a Stay-Clean Valve™features a special media that removesmore than 98 percent of particles,increasing fuel injector life. Both theprimary and secondary fuel filters arelocated in the engine compartment andcan be easily changed from ground level.

New Auto-Lube System. The newautomatic lubrication system providesthe optimal amount of grease to all themain lubrication points, including thebucket linkage. The lubrication intervalcan be adjusted through the monitor,and status messages for the auto-lubesystem are displayed.

Scheduled Oil Sampling. Caterpillar hasspecially developed S•O•SSM OilSampling Analysis to help ensure betterperformance, longer life and increasedcustomer satisfaction. This thoroughand reliable early warning systemdetects traces of metals, dirt and othercontaminants in your engine, axle andhydraulic oil. It can predict potentialtrouble avoiding costly failures. YourCaterpillar dealer can give you resultsand specific recommendations shortlyafter receiving your sample.

Engine Oil. Caterpillar engine oil isformulated to optimize engine life andperformance. The specially formulatedoil is more cost effective and increasesengine oil change interval to 500 hours,providing industry leading performanceand savings.

Water Separator. The D Series isequipped with a primary fuel filter withwater separator located in the enginecompartment. For ease of service, thewater separator can be easily accessedfrom ground level.

Fuel Tank Drain. The durable,corrosion-free tank has a remote drainlocated at the bottom of the upper frameto remove water and sediment. The tankdrain with hose connection allowssimple, spill-free fluid draining.

Remote Greasing Blocks. For thosehard to reach locations, greasingblocks have been provided to reducemaintenance time. One block is locatedin the engine compartment with twogrease points for the swing bearingand front-end attachment. For theundercarriage, two remote blocksprovide easy access for greasing theoscillating axle and, as an option,the dozer blade.

New LED Rear Lights. Optional LightEmitting Diode (LED) Rear Lightsreplace the standard lights, for increasedvisibility on the job site, higher durabilityand longer life.

Handrails and Steps. Large handrailsand steps assist the operator in climbingon and off the machine.

Storage Box. There are two toolboxesintegrated in the steps of theundercarriage. Additionally, there isa waterproof storage box integratedinto the upper structure steps.

Anti-Skid Plate. They cover the top ofthe steps and upper structure to helpprevent slipping during maintenance.The Anti-Skid plate reduces theaccumulation of mud on the upperstructure, improving the cleanlinessand safety.
