Cat 3126B HEUI Engine. Caterpillarelectronic engines meet worldwideexhaust emission requirements forthe EPA Tier 2 and the EU Stage IIregulations. With the HEUI fuel system,injection pressure is independent ofengine speed and provides maximum fueldelivery efficiency with low emissions.

The Cat 3126B engines are equippedwith an electronic air inlet heater. Thiswarms the air in the air inlet manifoldfor easier starting and reduces whitesmoke on cold starts. Machines willautomatically activate the timed airinlet heater prior to engine startup.

Turbocharged and Aftercooled. A well-matched turbocharger and air-to-airaftercooler results in higher powerwhile keeping rpm steady and exhausttemperatures low.

Torque Rise. The direct injectedelectronic fuel system provides acontrolled fuel delivery increase asthe engine lugs back from rated speed.This results in increased horsepowerabove rated power. A combination ofincreased torque rise and maximumhorsepower improves response, providesgreater drawbar pull and faster dozingcycles. The 89 kW (119 hp) maximumflywheel power occurs at 1800 rpmwhen horse power is needed duringthe dozing work cycle.

Torque Converter. The D5N singlestage torque converter efficientlyresponds to changing load conditionsby providing torque multiplication,therefore increasing drawbar power.It also provides protection to the drivetrain components by preventing shockloads from heavy dozing applications.This torque converter is efficientlymatched to the power train componentsand provides the superior performanceyou need.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-selecta forward and reverse gear foreasy, efficient directional changes. Auto-shift settings include:

• First forward to second reverse.

• Second forward to second reverse.

• Second forward to first reverse.

Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Transmission. The proven planetarypowershift transmission features threespeeds forward and three speeds reverseand utilizes large diameter, high capacity,oil cooled clutches. To maximize thelife of the transmission, the planetarydesign distributes loads and stressesover multiple gears.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.

• The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design, and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case,even with the ripper installed.

• Forced oil flow lubricates and coolsclutch packs to provide maximumclutch life.

Steering Clutch and Brakes. Oil cooled,hydraulically actuated, large diameterplates and clutch discs provide highertorque capacity and increased service life.

Elevated Final Drive. Final drives areisolated from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Electronic Steering and TransmissionControls. The D5N provides Finger TipControl for steering. Soft touch buttonslocated on the steering controls shift theelectronically controlled transmission.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The D5N has an additional transmissionshifting feature for added performanceand operator comfort — the ElectronicClutch Pressure Control (ECPC).This unique feature provides smoothershifting by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.

Drive TrainRugged, durable and reliable components deliver smooth, responsive power andlasting reliability.

Three Speed Forward/Reverse GearSelection. Three speed forward/reversegear selection is achieved simply bypressing the yellow speed selectionbuttons. These buttons are integratedinto the Finger Tip Control group.

• Automatic shifting features andreduced lever efforts provide easierupshift and downshift, increasedoperator comfort, reduced fatigueand shortened cycle times.

• Another feature aimed at operatorcomfort is electric vertical adjustmentof the FTC control group. This helpsposition the operator’s arm forefficient ergonomics.

Electronic Clutch and Brake SteeringSystem. The electronic clutch and brakesteering system incorporates low effortfinger tip levers allowing the operatorto work more precisely in close areas,around structures, obstacles and gradestakes. Pulling the left or right fingerpaddle causes the machine to turnaccording to the amount of paddledisplacement.

Machine Direction. Machine directionis controlled by moving the machine’stransmission forward/neutral/reversedirection lever. The middle position putsthe machine transmission in neutral.

Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown. Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown include thefollowing features:

• Auto-shift allows the operator to pre-select a forward and reverse gearfor frequent directional changes.The settings include first forward tosecond reverse, second forward tosecond reverse and second forwardto first reverse.

• Auto-kickdown automaticallydownshifts from any gear whenthe machine detects a significantincrease in load.

Cab. The new cab incorporates largeglass window and door panels. Thisallows for excellent visibility to theblade, rear and sides of the machine.New door and window seal designallows for a fully pressurized low dustcab. Acoustic headliner material, andsound suppression foam panels reducesound levels to 79 dB(A) according tothe static test procedure and conditionsthat are specified in ISO 6394:1998.

The cooling system is now incorporatedinto the cab structure providing goodvisibility to the rear of the machine.Individual windshield wiper controlsare located in the front section of theheadliner. The new design is spaciousand comfortable to promote shift-longproductivity.

Cat C500 Comfort Suspension Seat.Caterpillar C500 Comfort Series AirSuspended Seat is ergonomicallydesigned to support the operator invarious site conditions (optional).

• Seat is fully adjustable for maximumoperator comfort, support and reducedoperator fatigue.

• Seat cushion reduces pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

• A standard lumbar adjustmentprovides lower back comfort.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS-III).EMS III provides the operator instantfeedback on machine conditions andrecords performance data to helpdiagnose problems. It has flashablememory allowing system upgrades, asnew technology and software becomeavailable. This system is compatiblewith Cat ET and CMS service tools.EMS includes the following gaugesand readouts:

Roll Over Protection System. N-Seriescab supports have been stiffened. Stiffercab supports result in lower noise andvibration in the cab, providing theoperator increased comfort.

Undercarriage Arrangements.

XL (Extra Long) arrangement

• Forward idler position providesmore track on the ground and tothe front of the tractor. It providesoptimal balance, superior tractionand blade control for finish grading.

• Long roller frame also improvesflotation in soft underfoot conditions.

LGP (Low Ground Pressure) arrangement

• Specially designed to work in softand spongy conditions.

• Wide track shoes, long track framesand a wider gauge increase trackcontact area and reduce groundpressure for excellent flotation.

Rotating Bushing Track. RotatingBushing Track is designed to extendsystem life and lower costs in highlyabrasive low to moderate impactapplications. RBT features bushingsthat rotate when in contact with thesprocket. Since the bushing rotateswhen in contact with the sprocket,relative motion between the bushingand the sprocket is virtually eliminated,greatly reducing bushing and sprocketwear. The minimal bushing wear thatoccurs is evenly distributed over thebushing. This design eliminates bushingturn maintenance expense and sprocketreplacement costs. Rotating BushingTrack is available as optionalundercarriage.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the track rollerframe. This prevents abrasive materialsfrom falling down on moving parts.

Roller Frames. Roller frames aretubular, to resist bending and twisting.

• Roller frames attach to the tractor bya pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar.

• The recoil system is sealed andlubricated.

UndercarriageThe Caterpillar elevated sprocket undercarriage arrangements are designed for optimizedbalance and performance in fine grading to heavy dozing applications.

Product Link. This option allows thecustomer or dealer to obtain machinediagnostics and location from theiroffices. Product Link provides updateson service meter hours, machinecondition, machine location as wellas integrated mapping/route planning.

Electronic Monitoring System.The D5N features a more flexiblemonitoring system that is easilyupgraded by flashing software ratherthan replacing the module, reducingparts cost. As technology changes andnew electronics and software becomeavailable, this upgraded monitoringsystem will allow the machine to beeasily updated.

Built-in Serviceability. Less servicetime means more working time. Majorcomponents are designed as modules andmost can be removed without disturbingor removing other components.

Diagnostic Connector. Diagnosticconnector allows Caterpillar dealers toquickly troubleshoot the D5N or accessstored data with the use of ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET) or ECAP.

Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator, hydraulic tank and majorpower train components.

Modular Cooling System. Individualradiator core modules are easily servicedwithout major component removal.
