Today, it seems like everyone wants to hear about Christs love for mankind, but few care to hear about His condemnation of sin. Apparently not much has changed. About 2000 years ago, Je- sus declared, If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin(John 15:22). Remember Stephen? The book of Acts records that, in the midst of the high priest and other devout Jews, he told the sto- ry of Jesus beginning with Gods promise to Abraham to make him the father of many nations. Before concluding, he shared some details that the Jews didnt want to hear. He told them that they were responsible for the betrayal and murder of Christ. In response, they covered their ears, rushed toward him, and stoned him to death. Stephen could have saved his own life if he hadnt given the Jews too much information, but who knows how many souls he reached by his boldness to share the gospel? In the same way, how many of our friends and neighbors can we influence with the saving truth of Gods Word? Matthew 5:11-12 tells us, Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your re- ward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the proph- ets who were before you.” When it comes to sharing the story of Christ with the lost, tell them lovingly, but dont spare any details. Sermon Outline Do This in Remembrance of Me Luke 22:14-19 Introduction: Remembering something that happened last week is diffi- cult. Remembering something that happened last year is harder still. But remembering something that happened during the 1 st Century A.D. would be an impossibility if it werent for one thing: the written Word of God. In that Word, God gives us many things to remember, but the greatest is the sacrifice that His only Son made for our sins. We commemorate Je- susdeath every Sunday, but today it will be our primary focus. 1) An Occasion for Thanksgiving The Bible gives us four accounts of Jesus instituting the Lords Supper. In each of those accounts, the Greek word eucharisteois used to convey the idea of giving thanks. Before sharing the bread and fruit of the vine with His apostles, Jesus expressed His gratitude for the gifts of grace that God had provided. In like manner, we ought to come to the table with glad hearts and thank God for His ultimate gift of grace and mercy. 2) An Occasion for Communion In 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, Paul alludes to the Lords Supper when he talks about participationin the blood and body of Christ. The word participationis translated as koinoniain the Greek and it also refers to sharingor communingwith others. Koinonia was a very important part of life for the early Christians, and it should be in ours as well. When we break bread together, its not an act of passivity. It is a pledge of continued fellowship that we make with Jesus and our Christian family. 3) An Occasion for Remembering When Jesus said, Do this in remembrance of me”, He used the Greek word anamnesis”, which means, a deliberate recollection, done to better appreciate the effects (intended results) of what hap- pened. When the Jews celebrated the Passover, they not only remembered it, they memorialized it by eating unleavened bread. Similarly, when we break bread together, we are reenacting the same meal that Jesus shared with his apostles before His death. 4) An Occasion for Anticipation In addition to bringing the past into the present (through remem- brance), our observance of the Lords Supper proclaims a much- anticipated future event – our fuller fellowship with Christ when He returns. While Christs death was the darkest moment in history, we must keep in mind that we serve a risen Savior who now reigns su- preme. When we participate in the communion meal, we do so with the hope that we will one day share a meal with Him at His banquet table in heaven. Conclusion: Each time we participate in the Lords Supper together, let us keep in mind the significance of what it is we are doing. Our sweet communion as brothers and sisters in Christ is not something to be taken lightly. It is a period of joy, reflection, and anticipation of Jesusreturn.

Sermon Outline

Do This in Remembrance of Me Luke 22:14-19

Introduction: Remembering something that happened last week is diffi-cult. Remembering something that happened last year is harder still. But remembering something that happened during the 1st Century A.D. would be an impossibility if it weren’t for one thing: the written Word of God. In that Word, God gives us many things to remember, but the greatest is the sacrifice that His only Son made for our sins. We commemorate Je-sus’ death every Sunday, but today it will be our primary focus.

1) An Occasion for Thanksgiving

• The Bible gives us four accounts of Jesus instituting the Lord’s Supper. In each of those accounts, the Greek word “eucharisteo” is used to convey the idea of giving thanks.

• Before sharing the bread and fruit of the vine with His apostles, Jesus expressed His gratitude for the gifts of grace that God had provided. In like manner, we ought to come to the table with glad hearts and thank God for His ultimate gift of grace and mercy.

2) An Occasion for Communion

• In 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, Paul alludes to the Lord’s Supper when he talks about “participation” in the blood and body of Christ. The word “participation” is translated as “koinonia” in the Greek and it also refers to “sharing” or “communing” with others.

• Koinonia was a very important part of life for the early Christians, and it should be in ours as well. When we break bread together, it’s not an act of passivity. It is a pledge of continued fellowship that we make with Jesus and our Christian family.

3) An Occasion for Remembering

• When Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me”, He used the Greek word “anamnesis”, which means, “a deliberate recollection, done to better appreciate the effects (intended results) of what hap-pened.”

• When the Jews celebrated the Passover, they not only remembered it, they memorialized it by eating unleavened bread. Similarly, when we break bread together, we are reenacting the same meal that Jesus shared with his apostles before His death.

4) An Occasion for Anticipation

• In addition to bringing the past into the present (through remem-brance), our observance of the Lord’s Supper proclaims a much-anticipated future event – our fuller fellowship with Christ when He returns.

• While Christ’s death was the darkest moment in history, we must keep in mind that we serve a risen Savior who now reigns su-preme. When we participate in the communion meal, we do so with the hope that we will one day share a meal with Him at His banquet table in heaven.

Conclusion: Each time we participate in the Lord’s Supper together, let us keep in mind the significance of what it is we are doing. Our sweet communion as brothers and sisters in Christ is not something to be taken lightly. It is a period of joy, reflection, and anticipation of Jesus’ return.
