"Our members serving in the community"
It is a pleasure to see our East Honolulu Rotarians serving in our commu-
nity.
I have found in these past few weeks that many of our members serve on
other boards for non- profits and community associations and they truly
extend themselves to be there for others.
This past Monday we heard from Randy Wong, Director of the Hawaii
Youth Symphony and I am so thankful to him for putting such energy and
effort into teaching the youth of Hawaii the art of music and also extend-
ing programs to them that will help them shape their future. I did not
realize the great work the Youth Symphony is doing for the youth and
was just as excited to find out that our very own Chris Yuen is the Presi-
dent of the board of directors . Another East Honolulu Rotarian that
serves is Dr. Judy Saranchock who is the Executive Director of Read ot
Me International here in Hawaii. I know there are more of you members
that are passionate and serve on many other boards or committees and we
would like to know who you are and what you do so that we can also best
support you. We will definitely have to have a "Know our Member Day"
event so that we can learn more of what our members do in the communi-
ty.
I am so amazed seeing our East Honolulu Rotarians giving of their time
and talents and also taking time to serve in Rotary. That truly is "Service
above Self" and Thank you for being such great examples and leaders to
others.
"Together we make a difference" to LIGHT UP ROTARY !
Aloha,
Anne

Inspiration for today:
One of life’s greatest mysteries I how the boy who wasn’t good enough to marry your daughter can be the father of the smartest grandchild in the world.

Calling on the sometimes ‘hidden’ musician in all of us, Randy
Wong, Executive Director of the Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS),
spoke to the Rotary Club of East Honolulu about music and the role
that creating music plays in the lives of young people in our commu-
nity. The Youth Symphony, says Wong, “believes music is funda-
mental to human experience.”
A non-profit organization, HYS engages close to 600 youngsters,
ages 7-18, from around the state in music education. Programs in-
clude summer outreach programs, a regular concert season of free
performances on Oahu and neighbor islands as well as educational concerts in schools each year. East
Honolulu past president, Chris Yuen, is HYS Board Chair.
Filling the gap created by the declining number of music education programs in public schools, HYF ac-
cepts young people with no previous playing experience. In two brief videos, Wong showcased symphony
performers.
If “music makes better communities,” we can all be grateful to the Hawaii Symphony for Youth, its Execu-
tive Director, and staff for the important contribution being made.
