Broadway’s Mega-Hit Musical Hairspray Has Its Roots In RealityThere’s nothing better to raise the spirits than the joyous, funny

and slightly revolutionary Hairspray. The Angelina Arts Alliance presents the national touring company of this Broadway mega-hit at the Temple Theater Thursday, March 11 and Friday, March 12 at 7:30 pm. Tickets ($22-$30) are on sale at the Temple The-ater Box office, weekdays noon-5:30, or by calling 936-633-5454. The Temple Theater is located on the Angelina College campus in Lufkin. Hairspray is sponsored by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. Season Sponsors are Temple-Inland and Lufkin Industries, Inc.

It’s 1962 – the 50’s are out and change is in the air. Tracy Turn-blad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion – to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program and is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity…all without denting her do! But Tracy soon finds her life complicated by prejudice, both physical and racial as she tries to help her black friends break the racial barrier and dance with her on the all-white Corny Collins TV show. Although Hairspray is a nostalgic, twist-and-shout dance musical, it’s meant to be a little more than fun, fun, fun. Hairspray is also a clever barometer of the changing social and sexual attitudes of that historical time when the conservative 1950’s start to become the radical 1960’s. Yes, it’s bubbly and infectious, but it resonates with a powerful social his-tory. The genius of Hairspray is that it’s filled with good-natured campiness without completely pandering to the audience. Just like Tracy and her big-boned mother Edna, the show is big and bold and demands to be loved on its own terms.

Packed with talent, Hairspray delivers a wildly well-crafted show, one which takes the silly sappiness of High School Musical and makes it much more meaningful. How can such fluff carry so much emotion? Because it’s delivered with a sense of, well, hope. So, the main question is; can kids of all colors and sizes let their hair down and dance together? The answer is: of course they can!

Hairspray is a musical with heart, celebrating a teenage girl who is living proof that people who are different can be winners in the end.

Tickets are on sale at the Temple Theater box office. Call soon for the best seat selection -- 936-633-5454. For more information, visit www.angelinaarts.org or follow us on Facebook.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR THE 13TH ANNUAL ANGELINA COUNTY

SCIENCE & TECH FAIRAs spring approaches, many high school seniors are eagerly anticipating graduation.

This ceremony represents the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication. Graduation also marks a time when students make important decisions about their future. And, for those students choosing to continue their education at a college, university or trade school, the Angelina County Science & Tech Fair can help fund the way.

High school seniors have the ability to earn money for college at the 13th Angelina County Science & Tech fair, held on May 5 and 6, 2010. Any eligible, graduating senior or team of two seniors that participate in the Life Science and/or Invention events will have the opportunity to compete for a $2,000 scholarship. “We are very excited to offer local students the opportunity to earn money for college while expanding their minds,” said Jeff Whitfield, Chairman of the Angelina County Science and Tech Fair. “This scholarship underscores our commitment to educating our youth. We hope that seniors are motivated by this incentive to enter outstanding projects in the fair.”

The scholarship winner will be announced at the Fair on May 6, 2010. To qualify, the student must be enrolled in an Angelina County public, private, or home school of less than college level on the first day of the Angelina County Science and Tech Fair. The senior must graduate high school
