If your child needs helpwith motor skills or feelsanxious around loudnoises, the perfect toy is

still out there.

In her book, Smart PlaySmart Toys: How to Raise aChild with a High PQ (PlayQuotient), San Francisco toyexpert Stevanne Auerbach,known as Dr. Toy, has a listof questions to consider whenbuying toys for kids withspecial needs.

Parents may want toconsider which physicalactivities a child needs helpwith and which musclesneed strengthening, as wellas whether a child followsvisual cues and respondsto sounds. When thinkingabout mental and emotionaldevelopment, they can thinkabout whether a child looksin the mirror, understandsdirections and noticesletters.

If customers come witha list of needs, they dontneed to have a specific toy inmind, say Lisa Gallegos andCariad Owen, co-managersat Out of the Blue on RioGrande NW. They are usedto scouring the store for justthe right toy for every child.

We just have to becreative, Gallegos says.

At Out of the Blue, manycustomers want toys for kids

on the autism spectrum,such as kids who dont likeoverstimulation with loudnoises. Gallegos and Owensuggest the Meteor Storm,a novelty toy for $7.99 thatcreates a soothing sound as itlights up.

To improve problem-solving and spatial skills,they like Magnetic MightyMind for $22.99. Kids usemagnets to make patternson their own or use cards forsuggestions.

Children with visualimpairments enjoytactile toys they can

manipulate, Auerbachwrites. Richardson suggestsmusical instruments liketambourines or clay.

Kids who are hard ofhearing may like visualtoys like puzzles, matchinggames and construction toys,Auerbach suggests.

Larger sizes

In general, when buyingproducts for childrenwith physical disabilities,larger sizes are easier tocontrol, says Richardson.She suggests large TriWriteCrayons, $7.99 for a pack ofsix pyramid-shaped crayons.

The smaller the item, theharder it is to grasp, shesays.

Children with physicaldisabilities also may benefitfrom toys that respond tosound or by hitting them,according to Auerbach.Gift buyers should considerhow far a child can reach orinteract when buying toys.

Many toys are fun for avariety of special needs.Wire and bead toys let kidspush beads along the turnsof a wire. A blind child gains

tactile stimulation, whilea child with cerebral palsymight use the toy to gainconfidence.

For a similar range of uses,Richardson likes the classicwooden abacus for $19.99, anew product at Learning isFun. It can help kids withmath skills, colors and

patterns and provide visualand tactile stimulation.

Building toys are alsofun for kids with a rangeof needs, say Owen andGallegos. Wedgits, multi-dimensional plastic buildingblocks, help with sensory,

motor and logic skills aschildren learn which shapesfit together. A starter kitcosts $24.99 at Out of theBlue.

Toobers & Zots, $24.99at Out of the Blue, is aconstruction toy made fromsoft foam that can helpbuild strength and give kidscreative license to makewhatever they like, they say.

colors and styles make themeven more fashionable thanever and promise somethingto please any taste.

From a classic whitestrand necklace to amulticolored bracelet to apendant or earrings, pearlsare a perfect gift this holidayseason, local jewelers say.

Theyre a fantastic giftbecause they go with anyoutfit a woman can considerwearing, says Eric Shelton,president of Shelton Jewelersin Albuquerque.

You can never go wrong

Bernie Butterfield ofButterfield Jewelers agrees.Pearls are one of the thingsthat never, ever go out ofstyle, the Albuquerquepearl expert says. Day in,day out, you can wear themfor the most dressy to themost casual occasion.

Many different types ofpearls are avai lable now,from natural to cultured,

round to cross-shaped andclassic white to bright red.

Most pearls sold todayare cultured pearls, createdwhen a foreign body isinserted into the tissueof an oyster or mollusk.Freshwater cultured pearlsgrow in mollusks in lakesand rivers in China; eachmollusk can produce up to 50pearls at a time. Freshwaterpearls also can be color-enhanced to appear in colorsfrom chocolate brown tovivid red and can be grownin different shapes, such asa cross.

Saltwater cultured pearls,on the other hand, areproduced individually inoysters and are rarer, ofhigher quality rounderand with a higher luster and more valuable. Akoyapearls come in creams,pinks, whites and silvers.

Tahitian pearls, grown inthe South Pacific, are theonly naturally black pearls.Meanwhile, large golden orwhite South Sea pearls areprized for their size, beautyand rarity.

Human-made pearls havenever seen the inside of amollusk and are made from

a glass bead coated in a fishscale-and-polymer material.

Pearl jewelry prices varyas widely as the types ofpearls available.

There are pearls inreally any price range acustomer is looki ng for,says Ron Beauchamp, ownerof Beauchamp Jewelers inAlbuquerque.

Beauchamp carries stretchbracelets made from 10 mmChinese cultured pearls forabout $30, for example, butalso offers a 17-inch strandof black Tahitian pearlsfor $6,160. At Butterfield,a strand of Akoya pearlssells for $695 to $5,000 forthe large 9 mm beads while

a pearl drop necklace runsfrom $195 to $695.

Local stores have plenty ofselection from affordable toextravagant, and choices areplentiful in the under $500category, Beauchamp says.

We used to think of pearlsas plain white beads. Well,the pearl world has changeddramatically, Beauchampsays. The classics are notout by any means, but thesebolder, more fashion-forwardlooks are more popular thesedays.

Celebrities and publicfigures such as first ladyMichelle Obama have beenwearing pearls in layers, forexample sometimes mixingcolors and shapes.

Remember this

When it comes to choosingpearls, consider severalfactors. Price, of course, isimportant. But to assessquality, buyers should look

first at the roundness of thepearls, the color and the size.Pearls that are uniformly

spherical are the mostvaluable. Likewise for pinkrose pearls, Shelton says.Larger pearls generally areworth more than smallerones. To get really largepearls, choose freshwater; thesaltwater pearls generally donot grow as large.

Another factor to consideris the surface look of thepearl.

You do not want a pearl,if you can avoid it, that hasspots or blemishes, Sheltonsays.

He adds that the luster,or nacre thickness, also is

important. Pearls with athicker nacre, or coating,have been cultured longer,are more beautiful andmore durable. Pearls witha thinner nacre can peel orchip.

In addition, pearls alwaysshould be strung on silkand individually knotted toprevent abrasion, Sheltonsays.

Beauchamp alsorecommends matchingpearl colors to the wearerscomplexion. Someone withfair or pink-toned skin willlook good in rose or whitepearls while someone with awarmer complexion will dobetter with gold- or green-hued pearls, he says.

nPearls can be damaged bycosmetics such as perfumeand hair spray and by bodyoils. So, pearls shouldbe the last thing to go onbefore leaving the house.Once back home, take thepearls off and wipe them

with a soft, moist cloth,then put them carefully awaywhere they wont rub againstother jewelry.

nEvery six months to a year,soak pearls for 10 to 15minutes in a cup of warmwater with one cap of milddetergent such as Woolite.Then rinse and dr y, Sheltonsays.

nEvery two or three years,its important to have pearlsrestrung because the silkstrand acts like a wick,drawing in oils and othermaterials that can destroypearls from the inside out.

for properly, they will get achalky, yellowish look overtime, Shelton says.

Judges across thecountry are discoveringjust how tasty winemade from grapes

nurtured in New Mexicoslong sunny days and coolnights can be.

Several local wineries saytheir award-winning winesare a delightful way to sharesome bottled New Mexicosunshine with friends andfamily for holiday giving.

It really boosts ourconfidence in the grapesthat were growing, says

Daniel Gonzales, graphicssupervisor at SouthwestWines, the Deming vineyardand winery that produceswines under eight labelsincluding St. Clair, Blue Tealand D.H. Lescombes. Thewine is available throughmany retailers as well as theSt. Clair Winery and Bistroon Rio Grande NW.

Judges at the 2011 SanFrancisco Chroniclecompetition mostrecently named St. ClairGewrztraminer as thebest white wine from 5,000entries, Gonzales says.

Its the second time wevegotten a sweepstake award. Itfeels like were starting to berecognized, Gonzales adds.

In 2009 the samecompetition gave a bestof show to a 2007 D.H.Lescombes Cabernet FrancLimited Release. The awardsare two of three dozen best of

show awards that the wineryhas garnered as well as more

than 80 gold medals.Credit goes to both the

climate and condition of ourvineyard as well as to theextreme care our winemakertakes to make sure thesewines are everything theycan be, Gonzales says.

A bottle ofGewrztraminer, describedas tasting of ripe apricots andspice, with lingering hints ofgreen apple, is $12, while abottle of the premium labelD.H. Lescombes is about $24.Gonzales says that the BlueTeal label is popular duringthe holidays and offers alittle sweeter sip of wine forabout $10 a bottle.

The magazine atwinespectator.com has saidthat it challenges anyone tofind a sparkling wine, evenat three times the price, thattastes as good.

Gruet also has won many

awards for its other winesincluding its Brut, McBridesays.

She says a good way togive a gift of a Gruet wine,sparkling or still, is in a giftbasket that averages about$60 or $80 and containswine, wine accessories andgourmet New Mexican foodto complement the wine.

Another way to pleasewine lovers is to give them awine club membership. Forabout $80 every other month,members of Le Club des Vinsreceive two hand-selectedbottles by winemakerLaurent Gruet, McBridesays. Free flights of tastingswhen visiting the winery are

included as well as specialevents and a 10 percentdiscount on all Gruet wines,she adds.

also has a wine club, saysKaren Hueston, tasting roommanager.

Many levels of membershipare available, but theClarion Club, for example,

is $39 every other monthand includes two bottles ofwine, free tastings for twopeople when visiting, useof the patio for picnics andspecial members-only events,she says. A minimum of sixmonths is required for a giftmembership.

Holiday favorites

Hueston says the award-winning 2007 Meritage, $25a bottle, is a favorite of manypalates and would make agreat gift for someone whoenjoys red wine. A blend of50 percent merlot, 30 percentcabernet franc and20 percent cabernet

sauvignon, Meritage offersa complex taste with alingering finish with flavorsof vanilla, blackberries,chocolate and currant, shesays.

When it comes to NewMexicans who lovechile, Francesca Kayis at the top of the

list. More than 20 years ago shestarted putting together recipes forchile fruit salsas, regular salsasand chile sauces to sell at herAlbuquerque store Chile Addict(chileaddict.com).

Located at 325 Eubank NE, this28-year-old business sells foodsmade with chile and items for thehome that are inspired by NewMexicos beloved state vegetable.For a holiday gift for the chilelover in your life, check out ChileAddicts varied selection.

Chile Addicts fruit salsa comesin three kinds: peach with greenchile, mango pineapple with redalapeo and papaya peach with

elp gear up the anglers on yourholiday shopping list with gadgets,rods and reels they can use the next

time they make a trip to their favoritefishing spot.

The newest fly rod on the market is the SageOne, which is hand-crafted, dramaticallylighter and made of graphite, and its one thatlongtime anglers will appreciate, says CindySawyer, an owner of Los Pinos Fly and TackleShop in northeast Albuquerque. The pricedepends on the size but its about $720, Sawyersays.

Chuck Domenici, who runs the fishingdepartment at Charlies Sporting Goods onMenaul Northeast, agrees that the Sage Oneis the hottest fly-fishing rod out this holidayseason. This particular fly rod is not onlylightweight but it fits many casting styles, hesays.

Reels that go well with the Sage One fly rodare the Sage 4500 series, which range in pricefrom $375 to $425, and are found at Charlies.At Los Pinos, Sawyer recommends the Galvan

Rush Light reel, which is $260.For those in need of reels, Tige Butt, fishing

manager at Sportsmans Warehouse, says theLamson Velocity 2 fly reel is all-machinedaluminum and made in the USA. It comes witha lifetime warranty, and costs $249.

The Shimano Chronarch, a bait-casting reelthat an experienced bass fisherman wouldappreciate, costs about $200.

The Redington Pursuit fly-fishing comboincludes a rod, a pre-spooled reel withbacking, line and leader, and a storage case tokeep it all in.

We sell the heck out of them, Butt says.Prices range from $119 to $179 for the set.

Great gadgets

For those looking to have luck finding afresh catch of the day every time, there is theLowrance Fish Finder Model HDS-5 Lake.

This gadget keeps track of where fish are, andhelps the captain find his/her way back to thehot spot, Butt says. The GPS ability helps mapout where the best places to find fish are onthe lake. Its about $750.

Sawyer of Los Pinos says anglers can alwaysuse a fly box for carrying the flies while out onthe water, and the boxes by the Montana FlyCo., $19.95, are very decorative and colorful.

She suggests including a dozen flies, whichcost $25 for a dozen, she says. Customers canmix and match, and pick the flies they wantfor gift-giving.

She adds that the store offers a punch cardfor customers. After purchasing four dozenwithin a year, the fifth is free.

Theyre good for any angler, Sawyer says.Theyre all going to need them in order tofish.

At Charlies, the fishing department carriesan assortment of flies, and the staff theremakes custom kits of flies for particularfishing areas in New Mexico whether its inthe northern or southern Rockies, the Jemez

area or the San Juan River.Those are always big for Christmas,

Domenici says.

Going in?

Another item anglers will appreciate is aprotective, long-sleeve, vented shirt. Theyrange in styles and cost $40 to $79 at Los Pinos.

Waders are a necessity for anglers wholikely will find themselves at least knee-deep in one creek or another. The Simms G3chest waders are made of Gore-Tex and cost$429. Domenici says the waders are ideal forconventional fishermen and those who plan onwading in a river. Theyre puncture-resistant,lightweight and breathable, and they wontchafe legs.

The Simms Rivershed wading boots, pairedwith the waders will keep legs and feet dry.They cost $179.95.

In addition, Sawyer says that one gift ideafor businesses is to rent equipment for fishingtrips for their staff.

We can outfit them and they can enjoy aday in the wilderness, she says.

An anglers also going to need some place to

fit all the flies and gadgetry associated withthe sport. The Redington Clark Fork vest is$29.95, and is a good all-around fishing vest,Domenici says.

A tackle box by Plano is about $50 atSportsmans Warehouse, and has plenty ofstorage for a weekend f ishing getaway, Buttsays.

Inexpensive finds

Here are some stocking stuffer ideas:n The Tie-Fast Knot Tier tool, which helps

in tying line to a leader or one line to anotherkind of line.

(It) gives you a couple of extra fingers, Buttsays. It costs $7 at Spor tsmans Warehouse.n Tie-Fast Folding Scissors, $8, also at

Sportsmans Warehouse, are a handy tool fortrimming off line or a lure.

They fold up nice and compact, Butt says.Theyre not going to poke you anywhere.n And just in case you dont know the ins and

outs of knot-tying, The Little Red FishingKnot Book wil l come in handy. Its smallenough to carry in a pocket while on a fishingtrip. It costs $5.95.n Hikers and others walking through a

slippery area will find a Zephr CollapsibleWading Staff help them stay steady. The stafffolds up to a litt le over a foot long and comeswith a pouch. Its $33. Butt says they fit wellhanging off a belt or tucked inside a backpack.n Los Pinos carries bass lures for fishermen,

which cost $7 to $20 each. Those are perfectstocking stuffers, Sawyer says.n When walking in the dark on a mountain

trail, a ball cap with built-in LED lights on thebill could be better than lugging a flashlight.The hats cost $17.95 at Charlies.n Keep a fishing rod safe and standing

upright while readying for fishing with aMagnetic Rod Guard. It keeps the rod off the

ground and safe until youre ready to head forthe water. Its $8.95 at Charlies.

We may live in the eraof digital downloads,but we still generateenough paper to need a

way to carry it around with us.Long live the briefcase! There are

lots of gift choices out there for yourfavorite businessperson.

The type of briefcase you carrycan make a statement aboutfashion, occupation, success ortradition. For most, however, thestatement is about the practicalityof not only carting around papersand files, but also about howto safely schlep around laptopcomputers, electronic tablets andother digital devices.

The biggest and newest trendin briefcases, and in some casesbackpacks, is a design that allowsthem to quickly pass throughairport security checkpointswithout having to remove thecomputer, says Dust in Boyd,manager at Liebers Luggage inAlbuquerque.

That feature is marketed asSpeedThru, Security FastPass, ScanFast, ScanSmart,Express Scan and the like,depending on the manufacturer. All

have to meet speci fic checkpoint-friendly requirements established

by the Transportation SecurityAdministration, or TSA.

Hard vs. soft

Softside briefcases can be madefrom leather, which imparts amore traditional and elegant lookand feel, Boyd says. They alsocan be constructed from nylon orpolyester. The bet ter fabric onesare made from ballistic grade,Teflon-coated nylon, Boyd says.

Hardside briefcases are oftenmade from impact-resistant plastic

or aluminum, sometimes coveredwith leather. Some hardside casesare formed from thick, hard leatherstretched over a structural woodframe to give it shape.

The prices of briefcases varywidely depending on material,quality, style, features andmanufacturer. Simple soft-stylecomputer briefcases start atabout $25 at the large discountdepartment stores, and go up to$500 and more at high-end specialtyshops, like Liebers Luggage, and

fashion boutiques.Briefcase styles fall into several

general categories: portfolios/padfolios, attachs, computer bags,travel cases and messenger bags.

A portfolio is designed to holdpapers in a thin, flat case. Theyare lightweight and easy to holdby hand or tucked under an arm,so they rarely have handles. Nordo they have a designated laptopcompartment. Portfolios are lessexpensive and commonly used bystudents.

Attach cases are typicallyrectangular, hardside briefcases.

An attach opens up into twocompartments. They usually do

not have a padded compartment fora laptop, although some include aremovable padded laptop envelope.They frequently have some kind oforganizer panel for pens, businesscards, a calculator, eyeglasses andsuch. Attach cases often closewith locking spring latches, andfor added security, some havetumble dial combination locks,particularly the aluminum cases.

Computer bags are most oftensoft briefcases with a dedicated

padded computer compartment.They are also likely to have severalnon-padded compartments, anorganizer panel and a detachableshoulder strap.

Travel briefcases can be leatherbut are more often fabric. Theyhave a dedicated padded computercompartment and an organizerpanel. Most have an expandergusset that zips open, allowing foradditional interior space to hold achange of clothing.

Messenger bags are softsidebags made from fabric or leather.They generally have a largecompartment to hold and transportpapers and files, but also may havea padded laptop compartment. Thedefining characteristic is a largeshoulder strap allowing the carrier

to wear the bag diagonally acrossthe back.
