It is time for our annual fundraiser, Pets in the Park, and we want you to be a part of the amazing happenings at your AR SPCA! Adoptions are at an all-time high, and our spay/neuter clinic is reducing overpopulation one pet at a time! The shelter adopted out 973 animals to their forever homes during the past year. The spay/neuter clinic has performed 24,862 spays and neuters since opening in 2011. This year, we would like to share the successful adoptions that Sue and Jimmy Overton, long-time friends and supporters of the SPCA, have experienced when opening their hearts and homes to three of our animals in need. “We have been blessed 3 times over with the wonderful family members we have adopted from the AR SPCA! From our dear “Molly” hound dog in 2008 and then our rascally pony “Tulsa” in 2009, to our current dog “Dean-o” adopted in 2017, our lives have been enriched immeasurably. We adopted Molly and Dean-o as adults. Molly had been found as a stray and Dean-o was pulled from an overcrowded shelter in North Carolina. We always wondered what their lives had been like before winding up at the SPCA… if they could only talk! They’ve had their little quirks that we will never understand, but from the first days they came into our home they knew they had been given a second chance – by the gratitude in their eyes and their constant determination to please us. Tulsa was just a baby when we adopted him – he was one of the lucky ponies born under the care of the AR SPCA. He and the other babies born after that rescue may not have survived if it had not been for the quick action of the SPCA in assisting animal control with the seizing of their herd. All 3 of these wonderful creatures have constantly showed their love and appreciation for being rescued (well… the pony has had his days, but after all he is a pony!). We are grateful for the family members that the AR SPCA has provided to us!” Your support will help the next Molly, Dean-o, and Tulsa find their deserving home and family! Together we can make a difference for the animals in our care. Find the enclosed envelope to make your donation; any amount helps. Consider making a contribution in honor of or in memory of someone special to you. As mentioned earlier, we're gearing up for our annual Pets in the Park event!!! This year's event will be held on Saturday, September 21st in Gypsy Hill Park, Staunton. Please join us in the Park and participate in the Walk for the Animals, the Doggone Good Dog Show, and the Candid Cat Photo contest. The AR SPCA is pleased to present the 2018 Volunteer Service Award to Jane White and Eric Pritchett.

Jane White has been a valuable and dedicated volunteer of the SPCA for the past 13 years. Jane served on our Board of Directors from 2006 with her term ending this past April. We are happy to say that Jane still remains active with the SPCA and her time and talent has made our SPCA Benefit Shop the talk of the town! From the displays in the shop to motivating the volunteers that work at the shop, Jane has done an amazing job generating funds that are directly used for the care of our shelter animals. Thank you, Jane, for all you do and have done over the past years and for teaching us to take time to see the good in every situation!

Eric Pritchett not only gives our area the weather forecast, he gives his time to help us find homes for our adoptable critters! Eric comes to the shelter every month with Tara to film a segment featuring one of our pets waiting to find their forever family. Both Eric and Tara are employees of NBC 29 in Charlottesville, and this feature has been very valuable in getting our pets adopted. Just ask Tara – she ended up adopting a puppy for her family that she had filmed! Eric has supported the shelter over the years serving as MC for our Pets in the Park fundraiser and participating in our Furry 5K events. Eric, thank you for being a friend to the AR SPCA. Next year we need to schedule Pets in the Park so that it does not conflict with your vacation!!

Again this year, we honored our friend and lifetime supporter, Maryanne Moffett, by offering low cost spay/neuter surgeries during the month of May.

Altering our community one pet at a time

Every year in May, the Augusta Regional SPCA is honoring the memory of Maryanne Moffett who died in 2015 with $25 spay and neuter appointments, thanks in part to a $300,000 endowment gift she left to the organization. This year we were again able to spay/neuter 300 community animals - 180 dogs and 120 cats!!

Discounted spay and neuter events are often possible through various charity funds, but annual funding is contingent on its availability. Maryanne’s gift ensures the affordable clinics can be offered on a yearly basis.

The Augusta Regional SPCA provides the following cremation

and/or burial services:

Cremation with or without return of ashes

Pet interment with perpetual care of gravesite

A wide variety of caskets, urns, and markers are available

through the shelter, or you may provide your own.

All markers must be fl at.

Mark your calendars! This is a fun-filled, educational event for the entire family! Bring your family, friends and leashed pets. Join us as we add the Furry 5K fun run to the day's events. We’re expecting your pets to “strut their stuff ” at our Dog Gone Good Dog Show, and don’t forget to bring a photo of your cat(s) to enter in the “Candid Cat Photo Contest.” Look for more information about these events on the following pages! Please spread the word about Pets in the Park. The SPCA needs your financial support to benefit the yet-to-be adopted animals in our care. Please invite your friends and neighbors to come to Gypsy Hill Park on Saturday, September 21st to participate in and enjoy the day’s events.

Here’s how YOU CAN HELP:

#1 Participate in the “Walk for the Animals” Contact family members, friends and neighbors to ask for their pledges to contribute to the SPCA. You will surely have our gratitude for your generous efforts. Your sponsors can donate via our website, noting that the donation is a sponsorship for your walk. Look for a sponsorship form at the back of this newsletter. Or register for the "Furry 5K"! This "fun run/walk" will start at 9am; visit our website for advance registration or register in the park on the 21st - race day registration begins at 8 a.m.

#2 Become a PETS IN THE PARK Sponsor In past years, considerable support for this important event has come from corporate and individual sponsorships. This year, contributions can be made in one of four categories: Magnificent Mutts ($1,500 and over), Cat's Meow ($1,000 to $1,499), Faithful Companions ($500 to $999), or Furry Friends ($200-$499).

We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank You Walkers!!!

Pets in the Park

When you Walk for the Animals, you are helping hundreds of wonderful homeless pets fi nd new homes where they will never again be abandoned, abused, or neglected. Every valuable dollar raised goes toward shelter, medical treatment, and food for animals that are at risk of being euthanized due to over-crowded shelters.

Your participation and fundraising in the Walk for Animals helps the Augusta Regional SPCA care for more than 1250 cats and dogs each year who are waiting for their forever home. Your participation also provides affordable spay/neuter services to more than 2000 animals annually.

Take a walk with your canine companion, friends, colleagues, and neighbors to raise money for animals in need; form a team or travel solo. Enjoy a fun fi lled morning with other animal lovers and their four-legged best friends, all while we help end the tragedy of pet homelessness!

Registration begins at 9 AM, walk begins at 10. There is no set fee for the event. We encourage you to ask your friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor your walk. A sponsorship form may be downloaded from our website or SEE INSIDE BACK COVER OF THIS NEWSLETTER FOR A SPONSORSHIP FORM!

The animals are relying on you, who are you walking for this year? Honor the incredible dogs and cats who have touched your life.

Shelter News & HappeningsThe staff at the AR SPCA

"Small, but mighty" describes the staff at the Augusta Regional SPCA! Our staff is small in number, but always mighty in the care and adoption of our shelter animals! No matter what the task is at hand, this crew is ready to tackle the situation head-on and fi nd a positive outcome. The cleaning and care of the shelter and our shelter residents is second to none and the staff is always willing to reach out to help other shelters in need. Everyone values and nurtures our partnership with the ASPCA’s relocation program and we are proud to have been a part of the 100,000th animal transported in

their program this year. We believe that by working together we can make a positive difference for the animals in our community.

Executive Director

Thank you Dr. Robinson!!!Dr. Charlotte Robinson acts as shelter veterinarian for the Augusta Regional SPCA. Dr. Robinson joined forces with our shelter in 1998 during an investigation of animal cruelty to horses. She was very instrumental in the guilty conviction against the owner, thanks to her expert testimony during the trial. She also guided us in the care and rehabilitation of the horses and thanks to her support and guidance, we were able to place the horses in deserving homes. Dr. Robinson is a mentor to shelter staff and is always available to answer questions and give care instructions for any shelter animals in need. The AR SPCA is blessed to have her friendship and expertise in shelter medicine and care. The staff and shelter animals say "thank you for being part of our team!"

Readers to the Rescue

Grounds Beautification

March 25 marked the maiden voyage of our new reading program, Readers to the Rescue. Wow! It went even better than we could’ve imagined! What a wonderful group of kiddos that spent their evening reading to our adorable adoptables. Thank you to the parents for bringing them out, and a huge heartfelt "thank you" to these kids! The pups LOVED it, and it was amazing watching them show interest, and

seeing some of our super shy babies coming to the front of their cages to interact with these awesome kids! What a special evening—we look forward to many more nights like this!

Thank you again to the families that participated, and a huge thank you to the wonderful group of students from the Murphy Deming College who helped us pull all this together. We couldn’t have done it without you!

On August 17th our friends at Synergy Rehab and Wellness stopped by the shelter for their Annual SPCA Volunteer Event. They helped out by doing some outside work around the grounds and then came inside to love on the animals! Thank you Synergy Rehab and Wellness for giving back to our community; the critters are so grateful!!!

The Agnes Lawrence Spay/Neuter Clinic is celebrating its eighth year of business with great success. We aid in the spay/neuter of not only our shelter animals but several surrounding shelters, rescue groups, and the general public. Our normal operating days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for surgery appointments. On May 1st, we were excited to kick off the Mary-Ann Moffett Grant designed to assist Augusta County residents in spaying and neutering 300 pets from the community with a co-pay of only $25 per pet. The monthly Wellness Clinic continues to be a valuable resource for many community pets in need of preventative care, including vaccinations, heartworm and tickborne disease testing, heartworm and fl ea preventative options, microchip implantation, and other wellness services. We hold the clinics every third Tuesday of the month and start taking appointments at the beginning of the month. We are very thankful for all the support we have received from the AR SPCA board members both in action at the monthly Wellness Clinic as well as addressing any needs we express to keep the clinic running smoothly. The success of the Spay/Neuter Clinic is by and large due to the dedication from Debbie Caywood, the AR SPCA Executive Director, and the licensed and experienced staff members.

Spay/Neuter Clinic Updates

Our monthly wellness clinic has been well received by our area and we are happy to give back to the community that has been so generous and supportive of our efforts for many years. Our Wellness Clinic provides services to area pet owners at a reasonable cost. This clinic enables pets to be fully protected and gives their owners peace of mind. Thanks to our clinic staff and wonderful volunteers, we are able to provide services to approximately 100 pets each month. At 3 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month the "hurricane" arrives but with our expert staff, dedicated volunteers and understanding pet owners, we endure a successful evening.

On April 4th, 2019 the ASPCA's (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) national Animal Relocation Program marked a signifi cant achievement by transporting its 100,000th animal. The ASPCA currently relocates more homeless animals than any other organization by working with overcrowded shelters in under-resourced areas of the country, most often in the South, to relocate their animals to other shelters, most often in the North, where those animals have greater chances of being adopted.

The milestone animal, Apple, a three-month-old, female Dachshund mix, was welcomed with fanfare to the ASPCA Adoption Center on New York City's Upper East Side. Apple's journey began at the Oktibbeha County Humane Society (OCHS) in Starkville, Miss., where she boarded the Nancy Silverman Rescue Ride, the ASPCA's East Coast relocation route, on Wednesday, April 3. She then traveled along with 15 other dogs to the Augusta Regional SPCA in Staunton for a night of rest and arrived in New York City where she was available for adoption.

"Using relocation to help communities drastically reduce unnecessary euthanasia provides immediate relief to overcrowded shelters while creating adoption opportunities for those with great demand," said Matt Bershadker, President and CEO, ASPCA. "Relocation is an important life-saving tool for animal shelters across the country in the fi ght to end pet overpopulation, and the ASPCA is dedicated to facilitating these important connections between source and destination shelters."

AND thanks to a very generous grant from the ASPCA, we were able to offer dogs that had been relocated to our shelter for a reduced adoption fee. This grant covered the expenses to make ready relocated animals for adoption at the AR SPCA. The reduced adoption fee was $100 and includes spay/neuter fees, a microchip, all age-appropriate vaccines, heart worm/tick-borne disease testing, and deworming.

For more information about the ASPCA, please visit www.aspca.org.

Reba (now known as Bonnie) asked if we would include a photo along with our donation. We adopted her in January 2018. Bonnie is enjoying life with her younger canine brother, and older feline brother. She didn’t seem to know much about cats but has always been good, and the cat seemed to sense that Bonnie was friendly, from the very beginning. Bonnie and her canine brother love to wrestle, and chase each other in the back yard. She loves car rides, especially when they end up at a park for a long walk.

Bonnie has become a sweet member of our family. We wanted to tell you Thanks! and let you know that she is doing well.

Tail MailI adopted 6 year old Pepper less than 24 hours after she arrived at SPCA and she brings me so much joy! I was told that she wasn't

housetrained but in the 2 months+ that she has been with me, there has never been an accident. I use a walker for our 2-3 times daily outings. She is a wonderful bed companion. My only complaint is that she awakens me at 6am with kisses and gentle paw pats. Previously, I slept until 10am but our outings give this 85 year old widow much needed exercise. Pepper misses her sister, Chloe, who was adopted right after Pepper. If Chloe's new Mom & Dad read this, please get in touch with me. Don't let age stop you if you need a 4 legged friend. Our neighborhood has many dogs and walkers and she fi ts in well.sister, Chloe, who was adopted right after Pepper. If Chloe's new Mom & Dad read this, please get in touch with me.

Naomi is adjusting and has fi t right in with our family. She fi nished basic obedience and we've been taking agility classes. She went with us to the beach for a week in Duck, N.C. at Thanksgiving. It's been fun sharing her fi rsts - fi rst time taking classes, fi rst time swimming in the ocean, fi rst snow. She's a great dog, very smart! We love her to pieces. Thanks for letting us adopt her.

Just want you to know that the Bull Terrier you had briefl y named Dash (now named Mojo) is doing great! He’s truly the best dog we’ve ever owned. He fi t right in with the resident cat and dog and is a playful love bug. We also want you to know that Pepsi (now called Buddy) has fi nally adjusted at my parents house. And although he’s still “a hider”, he’s full of cuddles for my mom, which is all that matters. She’s very happy and adores “her baby.” Thanks for your wonderful work!

Dixie's name was Everest when we adopted her. She is thriving here in Surry County VA on our farm. She loves to "herd" us and to snuggle also. She is about 40 lbs now and thriving. Thank you!

Thank you ! We adopted Hoagie (you had named her Tahiti) a year ago and she is the sweetest dog. She is a high energy dog, which can be exhausting but she has such a great personality. We love her!

Thank you for the work you do. Her favorite thing to do, hike off lead. My favorite - passing obedience school! Many thanks!

Enclosed is a donation to your organization in memory of Toby, a sweet dog who was adopted there almost 15 years ago.

My daughter-in-law and her 7 year old daughter picked him out as a 10 month old pup as they set to build their life here in Waynesboro. They picked him up on the day they moved from Maryland and all walked into their new home together. Then our son met Kelly, he had to be accepted by her daughter, Ryan, AND Toby! Toby was loved every hour of every day, and he returned the love sevenfold.

When we moved to Waynesboro in 2014, we became the happy "grandparents" to Toby and grew to love him also. We had the pleasure of having him at our house whenever they traveled.

He died while Kelly and Steven were holding him.

Thank you for the work you do and homes you help these dogs fi nd. They bring so much love and comfort. We all miss him so much but thankful for the time we had him.

Last week we adopted Frisbee, now Maddie. Maddie has brought us so much joy and love in the short time we've had her. She has helped us heal from the sudden loss of our boy Sully (was Hercules at ARSPCA). We feel so lucky to have found her and witnessed her transform from a terrifi ed shelter pup to a playful, goofy, and snuggly little dog. We are totally head over heels for her! Thank you for helping her fi nd her way to us!

He died while Kelly and Steven were holding him.

My Forever Pet

There’s something missing in my home,I feel it day and night,I know it will take time and strength before things feel quite right.

But just for now, I need to mourn,My heart… it needs to mend.Though some may say, “It’s just a pet,”I know I’ve lost a friend.

You’ve brought such laughter to my home, and richness to my days.A constant friend through joy or losswith gentle, loving ways.

Companion, friend, and confidante,A friend I won’t forget. You’ll live forever in my heart,My sweet, forever pet.

– Susanne Taylor
