From the Head of School

Blessings from St. Mary’s,

“People with a scarcity mentality tend to see everything in terms of win-lose. There is only so much; and if someone else has it, that means there will be less for me. The more principle-centered we become, the more we develop an abundance mentality, the more we are genuinely happy for the successes, well-being, achievements, recognition, and good fortune of other people. We believe their success adds to...rather than detracts from...our lives.”

Stephen R. Covey

His entrepreneurial spirit and motivational approach to life and challenges have inspired me over the years. The theme of abundance has carried through the past month here at St. Mary’s. We celebrated the William F. Connell ‘55 Connell Service Awards on Tuesday which is an opportunity for St. Mary’s to honor the legacy of our generous benefactors Bill and Margot Connell and to reverence leadership among our students, faculty, staff and alumni. We honored Edward ‘52 and Rita Collins and Hannah McCormack with the 2013 Connell Service Awards. It was a very tender event around love, service and doing the right thing. Margot Connell encouraged the students to find ways to give back and also to pay it forward. Please take a moment to visit the articles and photos so that you too may be inspired. We celebrated Ascension Thursday liturgy with Fr. Derek from St. John’s Seminary today and it was a very emotional day for all of us as we acknowledged this amazing senior class. In my short tenure at St. Mary’s, I have spent a great deal of time with the seniors at athletic events, the drama festival, the musical, career interviews, March for Life, Hunger for Justice, Senior Project, and by the lockers outside my office. We are blessed with a gifted and beautiful class and we honor and reverence their accomplishments at St. Mary’s. I also want to thank the entire community for being a part of the Spotlight on St. Mary’s. You are our ambassadors for the school and we thank you for helping us to advance the mission of St. Mary’s. I want to thank Katie Dearing and Jeff Newhall for managing all of the social media and brand management with me this year. We also want to thank our Web User Group who helped with the redesign and strategic approach to all of our communications this year: Paul Halloran from Grant Communications, Sam Lipscomb from Grant Communications and Graphic Details, Trustees Beth Bresnahan and Marnie Moore, Admissions Director Carole Frederick, Dean of Students Michel Durgin, Athletic Director Jeff Newhall, Campaign Director Jen Pearce, Dean of Advancement Katie Dearing, Executive Assistant to Head of School Pat Gill, Registrar Linda Williams and Dean Artie Gribbins. It has taken a village but we are on the right path for success. Welcome to Sam Lipscomb who joined the Advancement Office this week as Communications and Brand Manager. Sam was the engineer behind the web redesign, introduction of new design elements, new social media strategy and brand management. Sam is a 2010 graduate of Boston College. She is a graphic and web designer and her former employers include Graphic Details and Grant Communications. Sam also has a love for all things Boston College: she is a member of the Boston College GOLD Leadership Council and a fan of the Boston College Eagles hockey program. She has also been involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition as a volunteer and team mentor. We are looking at programs that incorporate STEM and Robotics for St. Mary’s in FY’14. If you have any questions or event information for Sam, please email her at [email protected].

Principal A fundraiser will take place benefiting Crohn’s and Colitis. People deal with this disease on a daily basis. The event will be take place on Saturday, May 18, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Lynnfield Street from 7-11 p.m. There will also be a raffle for two tickets to see Justin Timberlake and Jay Z at the Fenway on August 11.

2013 William F. Connell ‘55 Service Awards The William F. Connell ‘55 Service Awards are presented at St. Mary’s as recognition of consistent and exemplary service. A committee consisting of St. Mary’s staff/administrators, trustees, and members of the Connell family plan and present the program each year. The awards go to a St. Mary’s Alumnus/ae, Faculty/Staff member, or Friend; and a student. The Connell Service Awards aim to introduce a higher level of awareness for the value of service to our students. Spartan Pride Marian Division eighth-grader Kerri McKinnon was recognized as the student of the month by the Rotary Club of Lynn. The ceremony was held on May 9 at the Porthole Restaurant. Our deepest gratitude to Coach Kevin Moran for his leadership on and off the basketball court. We liked his quotes about the St. Mary’s Way. Abby Frary ‘18 and Richard Cadigan ‘15 volunteered Sunday morning with My Brother’s Table to set up all the water stations for the Walk for Hunger. They were joined by the their grandfather.

Beyond the Curriculum This week marked the fifth year that St. Mary’s has supported the Senior Project Experience for members of the Senior Class. This is an optional career opportunity where our students go out to a selected site for 5 weeks at the end of third quarter. They write weekly journals and compose a final paper. These students also present highlights of their experience in a formal presentation for their parents, mentors, and school community. Dr. Ann McGreevy is the Director of the Senior Project Experience. Photos are posted to our website media. The following students participated in this year’s Senior Project Experience:

Digitial Citizenship I would like to thank all of the parents for their participation in our Appy Hour information nights. I hope that you came away with a better sense of what the 1:1 iPad initiative is about. Your input is greatly appreciated and will help us plan as we make this educational transition. In the coming weeks we will be sending you more information regarding how the books and apps will be rolled out. Please continue to keep an eye out for those notifications. I would also like to take this moment to recommend that parents purchase the iPads before the summer begins. We will be holding sessions over the summer for parents and students to make sure that by the start of school their iPads are ready to go. If you have any more comments or concerns please contact me at [email protected] and/or 781-586-2010. Artie GribbinsDean of Instructional Technology and Integrated Curriculum

“No more hurting people” Martin Richard was eight years old. He spent Marathon Monday like a lot of Boston area kids: at the Marathon with his family. He was probably having a great day in the front row of a big crowd, very close to the finish line. A great day ended in tragedy for so many people including eight year old Martin Richard. A bomb was placed close to where he was standing with his family. His little sister Jane lost a leg. His mom suffered a terrible head injury and Martin was killed. His story and picture were all over the news for many days. There was one particular picture that was shown over and over again. It is eight year old Martin Richard proudly showing off a sign he made. It reads: NO MORE HURTING PEOPLE with a peace sign and two hearts as decoration. Such simple words from an eight year old boy. But stop and think about those simple words and how they could change the world if everyone decided to follow them. We had a ten foot long banner made with Martin Richard’s picture in the center of it. He is holding that handmade sign with a smile that could light up the world! We all signed that banner as a pledge to Martin Richard and each other that we would do our best to honor him and his request. The banner is in the first floor hall. We hope Martin Richard is in your heart and prayers. No more hurting people! Special thanks to Spartan parents Mr. and Mrs. L’Abbe who own New England Awning and Canvas in Lynn for the banner.

Appreciation National Teacher Appreciation Day was May 7

“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody—a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony, or a few nuns—bent down and helped us pick up our boots.”

National School Nurses Day was May 8 Thank you Nurse Lisa!

Chef Paul Here is our food focus of the month!

Fun fact: BlueberriesBlueberries are one of the only foods that are truly blue in color. The pale outer coating that protects the blueberry is called a “bloom.” July is considered National Blueberry Month because it is the peak of the harvest season. Fun fact: RaspberriesRaspberries (and strawberries) belong to the rose family. The best time to pick raspberries is in the morning when they are still cool and the sun hasn’t softened them. Raspberries come in four colors-red, black, yellow, or purple Fun fact: StrawberriesStrawberries are the only fruit that have their seeds on the outside rather than inside the fruit. On average, each strawberry has 200 seeds! Strawberries are the most popular berry in North America;blueberries are the second most popular. How much do I need?Young kids (ages 2-8 years) need 1 to 1 ½ cups of fruit a day. Older boys and girls (ages 9-18 years) need a bit more: from 1½ to 2 cups per day. Adults also need about the same amount. You can measure how much you eat by using your hand. Each handful is about ½ cup. Why should I eat this food?Berries are full of the nutrients your body needs! They have Vitamin C, fiber, and manganese. They also contain special phytochemicals that provide your body with disease-fighting protection.

Guidance SENIORSIt’s very important for senior students to submit the College information Sheets we distributed this week, as soon as possible. We need this information for graduation and to forward your Final Transcript to the college/university you plan to attend. JUNIORSReminder that May 17 is the Late Registration Date for the June 1 SAT and June 8 ACT. On Wednesday, May 1 our Junior Class attended the Boston National College Fair at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Marian Division Marian Division Arts FestivalThe Marian Division English Language Arts students celebrated literacy and poetry! Literacy journals and poem movies from eighth graders, a rhyming ABC book from seventh graders, and poetry lapbooks from sixth-graders lined the halls of St. Mary’s on May 2. Photos are posted to our website media. STEM VisitMr. Michael Haig visited the sixth grade classes at St. Mary’s to share his experiences as someone who works in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field. His visit is part of the DIGITS program, sponsored by the State of Massachusetts, which serves to increase students’ interest in math and science subjects and careers. Learn more at http://digits.us.com! I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!Sixth and seventh graders, stay tuned for eighth grade fun with baking! This fun activity on Friday, May 3 incorporated number, operation and quantitive reasoning. The students were able to model the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and decimals. The objective: students made an individual serving of ice cream. The exact measuring tools were not available to them. They used their knowledge of equivalent fractions and ratios, to find the correct measurements. They were also asked to change their portion size to increase and calculate their new ingredient measurements. Photos are posted to our website media.

Athletics Please continue to check the Athletics Calendar for updated information on all of our Spring teams. Congratulations to 1989 St. Mary’s graduate David Brown on being named our new boy’s basketball coach. Congratulations to Junior Brianna Rudolph on receiving a full Div. 1 Basketball Scholarship to UMass Lowell!

Campus Ministry On Thursday, May 9, a School Mass celebrated by guest celebrant from St. John Seminary faculty, Fr. Derek Borek, and student Emmitt O’Shea offered a reflection on the Marathon Tragedy. St. Mary’s Students pledged thousands of prayers collectively and created spiritual bouquets and letters of hope and thanks to first responders and letters of comfort and peace to the victims and families. Each letter was a pledge from students to pray specific prayers for their intentions. Ms. Durgin also worked with students to create a banner to hang in our school as a reminder to continue to pray for our brothers and sisters affected by the Marathon Monday tragedy after it is no longer front page news.
