When we do this the final e was dropped before we added the suffix.
Let's look at some other words:
The root words here are like and safe.
Our suffixes here are consonant suffixes which are ness and ly.
So for our dropping rule today, it says that a silent e on a root word is dropped before adding a vowel suffix. Remember back to out "doubling rule" where we put check marks in the boxes. LOOK BELOW
A root word will get a check mark if it ends with a silent e and a suffix will get a check mark if it is a vowel suffix. When you have two check marks you drop the silent e.
One check mark tells you just to add the suffix without dropping any letters.
