1. Placement test and needs analysis

On the first day at ABCHumboldt, students do a test to determine their current level of Spanish. The test consists of two parts: written and oral. If they wish, our students can do the written part on our website and the oral part on Skype before starting the course. Before students arrive, a needs analysis is performed in order to define course objectives.

2. Uniform groups

Students are then placed in a group at an appropriate level to ensure the success of their learning.

3. Learning materials

The materials used in training classes are designed to stimulate Spanish learning. We use the most up-to-date textbooks and modern facilities, with the very latest multimedia and online learning options.

4. Ongoing support and monitoring

Spanish Language CoursesGroup Courses

Standard Intensive

The Intensive Course is designed to provide a thorough knowledge of general Spanish at all levels. This course is for students who want to improve their Spanish language skills for general use. Group sizes are small (maximum 12 students), so joining a course here is about participating. The courses are lively and fun, helping students pick up the language right from day one. The course covers the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and is specially programmed to improve practical Spanish language skills as quickly as possible.Intensive Spanish courses are from one to 11 weeks’ duration, and students may extend their course over the number of weeks required.

Long Term

The minimum course duration is 12 weeks. This is the ideal programme for students who are able to study Spanish during an extended stay, leading to fluent understanding and the ability to communicate at all times. This programme also allows our students to be immersed in the cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of Spanish life, thus getting to feel like Spaniards.

Academic Semester and Year

These programmes are designed for students wishing to study for a long period of time at ABCHumboldt. The Academic Semester is 24 weeks of tuition and the Academic Year is 32 weeks of tuition. This is the best option for those students who want to take a gap year or simply immerse themselves in Spanish life and culture. The Academic Year can be structured to suit each individual student’s needs. Our Academic Coordinator can design a suitable study path, taking into consideration the student’s arrival time, level of Spanish and academic aim for the year.

Intensive Minigroups

International groups with a maximum of 4 participants offer the ideal setting for learning Spanish in a communicative way. These interactive training classes are held in uniform learning groups. The course develops practical skills, such as Spanish for presentations, as well as general communication skills. Course length from one to 32 weeks/20 classes per week.

All courses are grouped according to level of ability, ranging from A1-Beginner to C2-Superior; all follow the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the curriculum of the Instituto Cervantes.Our students can attend for free our “Conversation Class & Press Review” (daily)Training classes are held from Monday to Friday, mornings or afternoons, depending on various factors such as level, number of students/groups, etc. Training classes start every Monday throughout the month, but absolute beginners must start on the first Monday of each month (in July and August only, the third Monday is also possible).

We hold free “Conversation Class & Press Review” every day for all ourstudents. This serves as a warm-up.

Combined Courses: Group course plus one-to-one tuition

Combination of a Group Course (Standard Intensive or Intensive Minigroup) plus one-to-one tuition. A combined course offers an excellent opportunity to blend group-based general Spanish training classes with the personal attention that comes from one-to-one tuition. We offer either 5 or 10 classes per week of one-to-one tuition, during which the student can focus on general or business Spanish, or prepare for an examination such as DELE, telc or the Cámara de Comercio de Madrid’s Business Spanish. DELE Preparation

Our examination preparation courses are designed to help students use their language abilities to get the best possible grade in DELE examinations. On these courses, students learn about how the examinations work and what the examiners will be looking for. The content focuses on the DELE qualifications (Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language), the official qualifications awarded by the Instituto Cervantes to certify competence and proficiency in Spanish.ABCHumboldt is recognised as an official examining centre for DELE. Junior Summer Course

The course is designed for students aged 15 to 18. It combines Spanish training classes (Standard Intensive Course) with a wide range of social and cultural activities, thus facilitating language learning while our students thoroughly enjoy their stay in Barcelona.Students can choose to take a two, three or four-week course. Training classes are held in the morning or afternoon. Activities take place from 17:00 onwards, always accompanied by an ABCHumboldt guide.The objective of this programme is to ensure our students have an unforgettable fun-filled Barcelona experience.We trust that our students will enjoy learning as much as possible about Spain, its language and culture.For this reason, we offer organised activities every afternoon from Monday to Friday and excursions on Saturdays.These activities are specially designed for our junior students and include cultural events, sports and recreation.Students participating in this course benefit from particularly close monitoring to ensure that their stay is as safe as possible.

Sample of a two-week programme

Spanish for Your Own Group

Spanish courses specially designed for the specific needs of each group: language or cultural school trips, a group of students with the same interests, a language business trip, etc.The start date of the course, number of weeks and classes per week are flexible. Training classes can be held in open groups (with other students at the school, according to level) or closed groups (your group only). For closed groups, all the participants in the group must have the same or similar levels of Spanish.

RequirementsMinimum of 6 participants.Maximum of 12 participants per group class.Groups of students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by group leaders over the age of 18.Training class may be scheduled for mornings or afternoons. Closed groups can establish the exact dates on which they wish to have training classes.

Our levels

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages is the methodology-teaching guide for the ABCHumboldt curriculum and assessment.

The school offers a wide range of levels from absolute beginners to very advanced (from A1 to C2). You will normally need at least 100 hours’ tuition at any one level before advancing to the next course. The table gives an idea of how our levels compare to those established by the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the Instituto Cervantes for its DELE qualifications (Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language) and by telc.

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise

information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments

and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously,

very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most

complex situations.

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most

immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local

geography, employment).Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a

simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment

and matters in areas of immediate basic need.

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit

meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious

searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social,

academic and professional purposes.

Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing

controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed

at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and

others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/

she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way

provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics,

including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.

Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with

native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.

Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a

topical issue giving the advantages and independent disadvantages of various options.

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly

encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to

arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple

connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe

experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and

explanations for opinions and plans.

Can interact relatively fluently in everyday situations, providing that the language

spoken is slow and clear.

Can initiate an unrehearsed conversation on familiar topics, expressing opinions and

exchanging information, as well as relating past experiences and future projects.

Can read and write short uncomplicated text on familiar topics.

Homestay

All host families are selected by ABCHumboldt. We recommend this form of accommodation as being the most comfortable and also the best way to keep practicing Spanish outside the classroom.• Near the school (walking distance or by public transport, maximum 20 minutes).• Single and double rooms.• Bed and breakfast, half board (breakfast and dinner) or full board.• Bed linen, blankets, pillow, towels.• Towels and bed linen changed weekly.• One laundry load per week included.• Keys supplied.

For almost all of our students the quality and type of accommodation is just as important as the choice of course - after all, a significant amount of time will be spent there. Our experience has enabled us to put together different categories of accommo-dation. ABCHumboldt can arrange for students to be met at the airport and accompanied to their accommodation. Our representative will be waiting holding a sign indicating the student’s name. Return service also available.

Weekly we run a number of social events that allow you to see and experience real life in Barcelona.Learning Spanish in constant contact with people and in one of the most fascinating cities on the Mediterranean.Whether strolling down the Ramblas, visiting the Picasso Museum or Gaudí’s Park Güell, discovering the Gothic Quarter with its narrow streets and comfortable bars, shopping in elegant stores or enjoying the Catalan cuisine and the smells and colours of the Boquería market, you will easily be able to appreciate the warm, open character of a Mediterranean city.These activities are offered at very reasonable prices.

First-hand experience of another culture and direct contact with the people are unbeatable for a true understanding of a language. Our culture and leisure programme is therefore a very important part of the courses we offer and complements your training classes with the language teacher.

School location

Thanks to our school’s central location and excellent communications, students can get to the most attractive sights of Barcelona in no time at all.

From Barcelona airport:

The airport train is about 200m from the terminal building. The train stops at Passeig de Gracia. From Passeig de Gracia, you can take the green metro line (Line 3) and get off at the Fontana stop. Total journey time: approx. 45 minutes.
