When Did the Spanish Come to California and Why?
• 1542: Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed on “Alta” California (now known as
San Diego), claiming it for Spain.
• 1767: Rumor that Russian fur traders were working their way from the
Bering Sea, and was planning on settling in the lower part of California with
the British, spurred Spanish settlement.
Where Did the Spanish Settle and Why?
• 1769: Two ships (The San Antonio and San Carlos) arrived along San
Diego, establishing Presidio.
• The establishment of missions were used as a method to advance and secure
Spain’s colonial frontier (21 founded by Junipero Serra).

• The introduction of ham to the “New World”
• The Spanish has treated our sweet tooth with the popular treat chocolate and
churros
• The use of olive oil when cooking and wine at dinner

• Paella (Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain's national dish)
