Mayor’s MessageDear Citizens:
What a great city and surrounding area we live in. Why live anywhere else? We as a city try to provide great services that are necessary and ser-vices that improve our quality of life. The Chamber of Commerce plays a major role in accomplishing this excellent quality of life that is the envy of many communities.
As the mayor of Spanish Fork City, I would like to encourage each resi-dent to support our local business people. Not only does it show our appre-ciation and support for what they do for our quality of life, but it strengthens the business community and supports the tax base that helps run the city.
I invite you to study this directory and become acquainted with the many businesses, professionals and exceptional craftsmen located in Spanish Fork. You’ll be surprised by the number and diversity that can be found here.
As we all work, live, and play this coming year, I look forward to rubbing shoulders with you in the streets, market places, recreational complexes and city celebrations.
Thank you so much for your willingness to serve as volunteers and contributors to the success of Spanish Fork. And remember, “Think Local, Shop Local, Be Local!”

If you think the whoosh you’re hearing are the giant windmills slowly churning at the mouth of Spanish
Fork canyon, then you'd better listen a little more carefully, because Spanish Fork travels at the speed of
technology – and sometimes even faster. There’s a buzz in the air, and whether it helps run your business
or serves your home, our technology will surround you in Spanish Fork.

Spanish Fork CityTwo Franciscan friars, Silvestre Valez
de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio de Dominguez, were some of the first explor-ers to pass through the Spanish Fork area, camping somewhere near the present day city limits on Sept. 23, 1776. Many years later, the name “Spanish Fork” appeared on John C. Fremont’s map of the area published in 1845. The city originally began as an outgrowth of Palmyra, but as the community developed, Palmyra diminished and became a northwest sub-urb of Spanish Fork. Between 1855 and 1860, settlers from Iceland came to the area, making it the first permanent Icelan-dic settlement in the United States. The city currently has a population of about 36,000.
The city is home to several large manufacturing facilities including SAPA, Ensign-Bickford, Klune Industries and Aerial view of the newly renovated Spanish Fork Rodeo Grounds.

When Jared Fairbanks was in high school, he had only been to a single funeral in his life. Then, a fellow church member of-fered him a job at the local mortuary, and 34 years later, Jared is still going strong in the business. Since then, he has worked in mortuaries and cemeteries of all sizes, and even consulted with the largest casket manufacturer in the world.
In 2009, he started his own business, Premier Funeral Services. Jared saw the need to provide a lower cost option for grieving families providing compassionate service. Jared says that helping people in their most difficult times is the most rewarding part of his career.
With his decades of experience, he knows how to run his mortuary most efficiently and passes those savings onto his patrons. Premier Funeral Services is a fully licensed mortuary, providing traditional funerals, graveside services, cremations, and transportation of remains to other states or countries for burial. They have a staff passionate about helping people and provide many conveniences that other mortuaries do not. For example, they are willing to meet with families 24/7 in a location of the family’s choosing, from parks, to hospitals, to restaurants and homes.
The employees of Premier Funeral Services also believe in reaching out to the community, supporting causes such as veteran’s supports groups and scholarship programs for high school students.
You can learn more about Premier Funeral Services at their website: http://www.premierfuneral.com.

Located in southern Utah County, Salem City lies beneath the majestic mountains of the Wasatch mountain range at an elevation of 4,610 feet. The city’s name was chosen to honor Lyman Curtis and the contributions he made to the community. Curtis was born in Salem, Mass. The city has a population of about 7,000.
The first settlers of Salem City arrived in the early 1950s and were attracted by a large stream in the area as well as the springs that provided water. Settlers constructed dams to contain these water resources and the area is still known as “Pond Town” to this day. The beautiful Salem Pond is a central feature of the city and the location of events such as the Salem Pond Holiday Lights and the Cardboard Duct Tape Boat Regatta. The pond is surrounded by city parks and crossed with an arched pedestrian bridge.
Students in Salem are served by Nebo School District and the city is home to several elementary schools as well as Salem Hills High School which opened in 2008.

What the Chamber means to me
Joining the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Com-merce provides business professionals with valuable opportu-nities to network, promote their business and give back to the community, according to several local chamber members.
“I don’t think I could put a number on the number of connections I’ve made through the chamber,” said Wendy Osborne, founder and director of Tabitha’s Way, a Spanish Fork nonprofit organization. “I’m so much more aware of what’s going on in the community through the chamber and through those connections that I know and that I’ve met.”
Tabitha’s Way was a brand new organization when Os-borne joined the chamber in 2010. Being a chamber mem-ber brought a tremendous amount of support to Tabitha’s Way in many different ways ranging from obtaining public-ity to creating connections with donors and volunteers. “It’s meant the world to us, to have the support of the chamber,” Osborne said.
For Cary Robarge, president of Robarge Collision in Spanish Fork, chamber membership has brought many opportunities to network. Meeting with people who work
in other industries has helped him learn how to be better in his own industry, he said. Monthly networking luncheons where professionals get together and share each other’s strengths, hopes and challenges are his favorite chamber activities.
Chamber membership has also helped him promote his business in the community and cultivate a customer base while at the same time allowing him to give back to the community. “If you serve your community, then that means you’re being served as well,” he said.
Susan Taylor, owner of Susan’s Hair Design in Spanish Fork, has been a chamber member for more than 25 years. She has served as chamber president and helped begin events such as the Winterlights Parade and the chamber’s networking luncheons. Belonging to the chamber helps a business get its name out in the community, which brings in customers, she said.
For more information about joining the Spanish Fork Salem Chamber of Commerce, call (801) 798-8352 or visit www.spanishforkchamber.com.

Years ago, Jared had a wake-up call. In the course of a year, both his father and good friend passed away, at the ages of 58 and 32 respectively. Both suffered from abrupt complications that were the result of unhealthy habits over time, that eventually lead to overweight and obesity. Jared saw that he was on a similar path, and decided to make a change. At first, he spent hours in the gym everyday of the week, with very limited results – 20 lbs in 18 months. He was then introduced to the Habits of Health program, and immediately loved the simplicity and results. The weight loss was not the only benefit. As a result of weight loss, he also lowered his blood pressure and cholesterol to healthy levels, eliminated chronic headaches, joint pain, and acid reflux, and even stopped snoring (his wife Am-ber LOVED this)! Jared and Amber are now helping others create optimal health in their lives.
The Habits of Health program helps those who want to create optimal health, rather than react to disease. Optimal health is created through small consistent habits of healthy eating, motion, sleep, and mindset. Those enrolled in the program are also assigned to a certified health coach for support and encouragement. Clients also have access to a terrific support network of doctors, nurses, and registered dieticians and nutri-tionists.
Jared and Amber have helped thousands of individu-als learn the Habits of Health. Their clients range from those who are overweight, diabetic, suffering from metabolic syndrome, nursing mothers, and anyone
who wants to feel and live better.Jared and Amber have also trained more than 500
health coaches in local communities, and nationwide. Many of these coaches have tremendous success stories on the program, and have moved on to help others do the same. They follow the motto: “It is hard to move backward when you are helping someone else move forward.” A great example comes from a client, Kim*…
“I have never been able to stick to any eating plan, and had decided I was a hopeless foodaholic! I had ZERO self-control or willpower. When friends of ours called out of the blue one day, the subject of health came up. We discovered that he had lost 107 lbs. Although I had no belief this program would work for me (I had just finished failing yet another plan) I thought I would give it a try…mainly to keep my story straight that “I have tried EVERYTHING!” In the first week, I lost weight…but more miraculous was- I was still doing it! I had never lasted a week doing ANY-THING before! 15 weeks later, I had lost 50 lbs and went from wearing size 20 to size 10.”

Spanish Fork Salem UnpluggedThis summer, the Spanish
Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will issue a chal-lenge to area youth: unplug from television, video games and cell phones and instead fly a kite, learn to fish or enjoy a picnic.
The chamber will be the of-ficial sponsor of Spanish Fork Salem Unplugged, a program that encourages youth to put down their electronic devices and instead explore 101 outdoor and family-oriented activities. The program will be offered the end of May until Labor Day.
The Unplugged challenge is simple: for 10 days, turn off television or any other media. The challenge is designed to
help reset the brain so that dopamine levels are reduced and critical pathways are rebuilt. Research has shown that in as few as five to seven days, the effects of not watching media are already measurable.
Those who have participated in this media detox - or V-tox, as it’s referred to in the Unplugged program - have said it completely changes their perspective regarding violence in the media, making it more intense and uncom-fortable to watch.
Through the Unplugged program, local businesses will sponsor various activities playing Frisbee in a park, watch-ing fireworks, washing a car or attending a summer con-cert. As youth complete the Unplugged activities, they will be able to visit the participating businesses and receive an Unplugged Brag Tag representing that activity. These tags can be attached to the special Unplugged Lanyards that will be distributed to local youth so program participants can keep track of their progress and brag about it to others. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the program.
Chamber Executive Director Cary Hanks said the program will be beneficial for both area youth and local
businesses. “The Unplugged program will provide an op-portunity for local businesses to interact with the kids and their families and be able to promote their own business while providing incentives to get kids playing outdoors,” she said.
The chamber is currently seeking businesses willing to sponsor an Unplugged activity. To sign up, contact the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce at (801) 798-8352.

We carry all the favorites: Easton, Mizuno, WilsonDeMarini, Rawlings and much more!
1. You kept your money in our economy. Studies show that for every dollar spent in a locally owned business, three times more of that dollar stays in our economy than would be the case with a national retailer.
2. You embraced the character of our community. We wouldn’t want our houses to look like everyone else’s. So why would we want our community to look that way?
3. You created local jobs. Local businesses are far better than chains or giant online retailers at creating more jobs per consumer dollars spent.
4. You helped the environment. You conserved energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. Walkable business districts reduce sprawl and automobile use.
5. You benefited from our passion and expertise. As your friends and neighbors, we have a vested interest in know-ing how to serve you. We’re passionate and knowledgable about what we do - why not take advantage of it?
6. You kept your tax dollars here. Spending locally in-stead of online ensures that your tax dollars are reinvested where they belong - right here in our community!
7. You encouraged innovation and product diversity. Whether brick and mortar retail or local online, service pro-viders or manufacturers, local business innovators ensure marketplace diversity - important in any economy.
8. You loved your neighbors. We know you and you know us. Locally owned businesses link us together in a web of social and economic relationships. Studies show that locals donate to community causes at twice the rate of chains.
9. You kept the American dream alive. You nurtured entrepreneurship, which fuels prosperity by serving as a means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class. This is the foundation of our American economy.
10. You made us a destination. The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors and visitors. This benefits everyone!

Established in 1974 by Vern and Diane Tanner, Triple “T” Plumbing, Heating & Air is a family business that has strived to provide outstanding customer service and meet changing market needs for 40 years. The name Triple “T” was chosen as a tribute to Vern and Diane Tanner’s three sons, and those three sons - Brad, Jason and Steve - are still partners in running the Spanish Fork business. Other family members work at the business as well.
“It is very rewarding to be able to work with your siblings and nephews and nieces and carry on the tradition that our father wanted,” said Brad Tanner, who serves as president of Triple “T” and also served as president of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce in 2013. The three Tanner brothers purchased the business from their father about five years ago and have hopes of seeing it eventually taken over by the third generation.
When first founded, the company installed heating and cooling systems in new churches, schools and commercial
properties. Eventually it added a service and repair depart-ment and gas fireplace installation division, and a fireplace showroom was added to its location at 1555 N. Main, Span-
Brad, Steve and Jason Tanner are partners running the Spanish Fork business Triple “T” Plumbing, Heating & Air.

ish Fork, in 2001. Three years ago, Triple “T” began offer-ing plumbing services. “If there’s one thing that’s helped us be successful, it’s trying to be diverse and offer more services to our existing clients,” Tanner said.
When the rate of new construction in the area slowed down several years ago, the company adjusted by offering service, repair and system replacement for existing build-ings. The company has experienced great success in filling this niche of the market, but Tanner said much of the com-pany’s strength is due to its employees. “We have a staff that really truly cares about the customer’s needs,” he said. “They want to do the right thing for the customer.” One of the biggest compliments Tanner receives when he speaks to customers is that Triple “T” employees were respectful, pro-fessional and considerate of the customers’ homes.
Triple “T” has 26 employees and serves all of Utah County as well as southern Salt Lake County and the Nephi area. At the beginning of 2014, the company opened its first satellite location in St. George. Over the years, the company has supported the community in various ways, including participating in local safety events to help educate the public
about having a home carbon monoxide detector. Triple “T” also donated one of its service vans to the Spanish Fork Fire Department, which now uses it to transport its hazardous material cleanup equipment. The company has also donated to and been involved in various community and chamber of commerce events. Brad will continue to serve on the cham-ber’s board of directors in 2014 as past president.
Brad said he feels that his family has been blessed with having a successful business, and being involved in the chamber and in community events is a way to give back to the community that has supported that business.

When the Wiggy Wash Car Wash & Express Detail Center opened in Spanish Fork in August of 2010, the company’s founders had set goals to expand that location in five years and begin looking at opening a second location in seven years. The success of the Wiggy Wash business, however has come much quicker, with two new car wash bays added to the Span-ish Fork location in 2009 and a second location opened in Springville in December of 2012. The business is now seriously considering opening a third location.
Helping guide the business through its remarkable growth is Wiggy Wash Managing Partner Brent Wignall, a Spanish Fork resident. Wignall had been involved in the construction business for 15 years when the recess hit and new construction lagged. A chance comment at a Christmas party about opening a car wash led to Wignall and his partner Chris Hailstone flying around the country for two years examining the car wash industry and learning about various washing methods and equipment. They learned that people didn’t like tunnel car washes on a conveyor belt if they felt like the belt was going too fast or the tunnels felt too small and claustropho- Brent Wignall

bic. The pair tried to solve these issues in their car wash centers and also installed a consistent style and brand of equipment through the tunnels instead of the mixture of equipment styles often found at other car washes. “It gives you that feel of professionalism and comfort from the second you see the first piece all the way to the end,” Wignall said.
Central to the Wiggy Wash method of operation is cus-tomer service. “That’s probably one of the biggest things we get back from our customers is how amazing our staff is,” he said. The Wiggy Wash locations offer a comfort-able lounge area where customers can relax while their cars are cleaned. Treats and drinks are also available for purchase and customers can utilize free wifi while their children enjoy a play area.
Wiggy Wash is owned by Brent Wignall and his wife Stephanie along with Chris Hailstone and his wife Sue. Brent Wignall became involved in the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce when the Spanish Fork Wiggy Wash first opened. He has since served on the chamber’s board for three years and helped organize
many of the chamber events designed for businesses such as networking opportunities.
His business offers fund-raising opportunities for school, youth, sports and other organizations. Groups can sell Wiggy Wash prepaid passes and the car wash gives 40 percent of the proceeds back to the organizations. Utilizing the Wiggy Wash for a car wash fund-raiser is a better option than holding it in a parking lot because the Wiggy Wash recycles 90 percent of the water it uses, Wignall said. This means only about 15 gallons of fresh water are used to wash each car rather than the approxi-mately 300 gallons of fresh water used when a car is washed in a driveway. Also, the pollutants washed off the cars in a driveway or parking lot end up in the storm drains which lead to Utah Lake, a problem that doesn’t exist at the Wiggy Wash where waste water doesn’t go into the storm drain system.
Wiggy Wash offers everything from express washes to vacuuming and car detailing services. It was one of the first car washes in Utah to provide a hot wax and shine service.

Chris Baird loves providing service and encouraging people to commit random acts of kindness. In the spring of 2010, he and a group of friends decided to have about 1,000 cards printed that they could hand out to people as they served them, encourag-ing them to “pay forward” the service through helping someone else. This small foray
into printing has led to the creation of a business that continues Baird’s efforts of inspiring people to serve others daily.
A year after the cards were printed, Baird and a friend decided to encourage people to learn more about the Constitution of the United States through printing copies of the Constitution and giving them
away at local businesses and summer parades. They raised funds through selling ads that were printed on the back of the documents.
This led to Baird printing a small coupon brochure which eventually was inserted into the Tidbits newspaper.
After working with Tidbits until about March of 2012, Baird decided to start his own newspaper. In June of 2012, the first issue was printed
with a name that reflected Baird’s continuing efforts to help those around him: Serve Daily.
“The point of it when it initially came out was promoting the Constitution and to have a handful of articles like restaurant reviews and business reviews and
ads,” Baird said. However, he soon learned that the weekly papers in southern Utah County had been shut down and there was a need for a weekly paper in the area, so he ex-panded the scope of his paper to include news items.
Serve Daily is now published once a month and distrib-uted to about 140 businesses and other locations in south Utah County where copies can be picked up for free. The paper is also available online at servedaily.com. The paper is divided into three sections: Empowering Liberty, which promotes the Constitution and has articles about local government; Building Unity, which has community news and opinion articles; and Fostering Growth, which features local businesses.
Currently, all the copy in the paper is submitted from readers. “It’s meant for community members that have a story to tell to have a place to tell their story,” he said. “We want it to have a community feel through reading stories that are written by your neighbors.”
Baird said he has a desire to promote the Constitution “because it’s being destroyed” and to encourage people to learn more about it. Regarding his emphasis on ser-vice, Baird said his parents set a good example of service for him in his youth. His time serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints increased his belief that simple acts of service can change the hearts of those giving and those receiving.

Randi Kaufman of Spanish Fork is the owner of RK Creative Consulting, a business focusing on social me-dia, desktop publishing and website design.
She joined the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce to help boost her own business, but her participation has led to her assisting many other individuals and businesses in the community.
Kaufman has been a member of the chamber for about three years and served on the chamber’s board of directors for about a year before being named to the office assistant position at the chamber, where she helps man-age chamber activities.
About a year ago, Kaufman and others decided there was a need for a
Women in Business organization for southern Utah County. As a result, Kaufman helped found the Women in Business South Utah County group in January of 2013 with Amy Dickerson as president and Kaufman as vice president.
When Dickerson decided to go back to school, Kaufman took over leadership of the group as president. The group provides an informal and comfortable setting where women can form business relationships with other professional women.
Kaufman also provides service to the community through her business. She has provided marketing help on a volunteer basis for Tabitha’s Way Thrift Store and Pantry in Spanish Fork as well as the Ability First orga-
nization. Her past experience includes serv-
ing as a director at Rise Services and working as a rape crisis outreach coordinator at a women’s shelter.

2013 Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Tanner has chosen Lance Wilson, a State Farm Insurance agent based in Spanish Fork, as the recipi-ent of the 2014 Chamber President Award. Tanner said that Wilson has provided invaluable service to the chamber dur-ing the past year, both in assisting Tanner personally in his presidential role and in helping the chamber membership as a whole.
“I see Lance from my perspective as someone who went
the extra mile for the chamber this year,” Tanner said. Wil-son has been very active in attending the chamber’s ribbon cutting events and has been in charge of the chamber com-mittee that oversees Business of the Month events. At times when Tanner couldn’t be present, Wilson would take over the leadership role at these events, Tanner said.
Wilson’s office is located in the historic area of Spanish Fork’s Main Street and because of that, he has been very in-volved in working to improve business activity in the area.

Dreamview Park in Salem had old and limited play-ground equipment and some equipment had been removed because it did not meet the city’s insurance standards. Holly Meagher, a resident of the neighborhood near Dreamview, saw the need for children to have an upgraded playground and she went to work. Meagher spent many hours over the course of a year organizing fund-raising events to raise the money needed to purchase new playground equipment, then meet with the city to help select the new equipment. “She’s been a real asset to her neighborhood and the total commu-nity,” said Salem Mayor Randy Brailsford.
Doug and Carol Ford are very civic-minded, giving freely of their time and talents to the Spanish Fork community. They have been supportive of the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds and the Fiesta Days Rodeo.
Doug has served on a number of city committees includ-ing the recreation committee and the airport board. They run a successful business, Mountain Country Foods, in Spanish Fork.

Paul Casey, owner of HRC Climate Services, has been serving the community for 23 years and the company considers its employees and the community to be family. They provide cooling and heating services for both commercial and residential needs, including installations, maintenance and re-pairs. They provide quality service, honest business practices, and great warrantees. The Women in Business South Utah County group was organized in January of 2013 to provide a venue where businesswomen could meet and have an opportunity to network with each other. The group is open to anyone, but it mainly draws members from the communities extending from Springville to Santaquin. Both business owners and employees are welcome, including those who have home-based businesses. The group operates under the umbrella of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
The group meets on the last Wednesday of each month. Called Business Connection Luncheons, these events provide networking opportunities and also feature guest speakers that discuss business-re-lated topics. The organization has also been involved in service, having raised money for charities.
Randi Kaufman, president of WIBSUC and of-fice assistant for the Spanish Fork chamber, said the need for the business group became apparent as more and more women became involved in the chamber.
“We wanted to provide a support group and an education-
al group and an opportunity for networking,” Kaufman said.More information is available on the organization’s web-
site, www.wibsuc.org, and on its Facebook page, facebook/wibsuc.

More than 20 years ago, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Spanish Fork Ro-tary Club and the Nebo Foundation to provide scholarships for local high school seniors. Since then, through events such as the annual Scholarship Pro-Am Celebrity Golf Tourna-ment and silent auctions, these organizations have been able to assist hundreds of students in gaining higher education.
The golf tournament is hosted by the chamber and the Rotary club each May at the Spanish Oaks Golf Course. Local businesses and individuals can sponsor teams, and all proceeds are used for scholarships. In 2013, 22 four-person teams participated in the Pro-Am.
The tournament’s mission statement is: “Enthusiastically advance academic and career training for high school stu-dents by sponsoring activities and programs which generate critical scholarship funding.”
Money for scholarships is also raised through silent auc-tions held during parent/teacher conference nights at Spanish Fork, Maple Mountain and Spanish Fork high schools. Local businesses and individuals donate goods and services to be auctioned to the public, with all the money going to scholar-
ships along with the proceeds from the golf tournament. When the scholarship fund-raising work began, a donation
made toward the effort was invested in the Nebo Foundation, a nonprofit organization that manages donations to Nebo School District students. Interest from that investment is also added to the money used for scholarships each year.
Through all these efforts, thousands of dollars in scholar-ships are distributed to high school seniors each year, said Cary Hanks, executive director of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Each scholarship is $1,000 and in 2013, $26,000 in scholarship money was awarded. Stu-dents at Spanish Fork, Maple Mountain, Salem Hills, Land-mark and Legacy high schools are eligible to apply.
Hanks said the scholarships are based more on financial need and a desire to seek higher education than on grades. “We try to help people who might not qualify for other meth-ods of funding,” she said.
Thousands of children line up at the Spanish Fork Sports Park each spring for their chance to find eggs filled with candy and prizes as part of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which is held on the Saturday before Easter at 9 a.m., has become an annual tradition in Spanish Fork, with between 3,000 and 5,000 children ranging in age from infants to 10 years old participating each year.
As part of the hunt, the lawn at the sports park is strewn with between 10,000 and 15,000 plastic eggs. Each egg con-tains a piece of candy and a coupon with either an offer from a local business or an opportunity to redeem the coupon for a prize at the hunt. In 2013, about 25 bicycles donated by local businesses were given away, as were 300 Easter baskets full of donated items. Sam’s Club and Costco donated candy bars and stuffed bunnies that were given out as prizes.
The coupons for local businesses offer deals such as free kids’ meals, tires, car washes, drinks, ice cream cones, and children’s hair cuts.
In all, about $2,000 in money, gifts and prizes was donated to support the 2013 Easter Egg Hunt. About 70 groups and businesses participated, including students in Nebo School
District’s Bridges program, who raise money each year to purchase bikes and other prizes for the hunt.
While this event has a great deal of support through dona-tions of funds and prizes, many individuals in the community contribute to the Easter Egg Hunt through donating their time. After-school 4-H clubs in several Spanish Fork elemen-tary schools help fill the thousands of eggs as a service proj-ect, and other groups including the Spanish Fork Youth City Council, Venture Crew 1532, and the Maple Mountain High School FFA help assemble the Easter baskets and scatter the eggs the morning of the hunt.

Each year during Spanish Fork City’s Fiesta Days celebration in July, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Cham-ber of Commerce sponsors sidewalks sales along the city’s Main Street. Although the event happens on Main Street, all businesses in the city are invited to participate. The chamber assigns locations to each business and they are invited to sell their products to the crowds of people that are tradition-ally drawn to the downtown area by the various Fiesta Days activities such as the parade and carnival.
Sidewalk sales have been a tradition in Spanish Fork for many years and the chamber sponsors them as part of its efforts to help businesses promote themselves in the community.

Farmers Market

Every Saturday from midsummer through October, a park-ing lot in Spanish Fork is transformed into a marketplace for the seasonal bounty of local farms with sponsorship and orga-nization provided by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
For the last four years, the chamber has run the Spanish Fork Farmers Market, an event that attracts about 40 vendors each week selling fruits, vegetables, honey, herbs and other fresh food items. “We get everything from pomegranates to apples, peaches, watermelons and raspberries and all kinds of vegetables,” said Cary Hanks, the chamber’s executive direc-tor. The market is unique in that it is one of the few farmers markets operating in Utah that does not also offer craft items, making it a destination for people specifically looking to obtain fresh, local-grown produce.
The market has been operating in Spanish Fork for about 25 years, but it lacked formal organization, Hanks said. Vendors wanted a way to reserve booth space without hav-ing to arrive in the early hours of the morning to claim their area. The event was growing in size and there was a demand from the public for it. Eventually, the city and the vendors approached the chamber of commerce for help. “We as a

chamber board decided to start managing it and giving it some organization and some oversight that it wasn’t getting,” Hanks said.
With the chamber’s management, vendors are now able to reserve booth space for the entire season or on a week-to-week basis. The chamber provides personnel onsite at the event each week to help vendors find their booth spots and assist shoppers who have questions. Vendors are assessed booth fees which pay for the personnel and amenities like portable restrooms, but the majority of the booth fees has gone towards advertising.
“One of the things that’s come out of it is we’ve been able to advertise and grow the market,” Hanks said. Ads have been placed in local newspapers, on the Internet, on SFCN Channel 17 and on billboards. Hundreds of people attend the market each week, with Hanks attributing a large increase in visitors during 2013 to greater advertising efforts.
The market generally starts near the end of July and con-tinues each Saturday through the first weekend of November. It is held in the parking lot immediately west of the Spanish Fork city office building at 40 S. Main. The city allows the market to use the parking lot space free of charge.
Randi Kaufman, the chamber of commerce’s office assis-tant, helps oversee the market. To her, the Farmers Market is a central summer activity for the city. “I love meeting the dif-ferent people and hearing the history,” Kaufman said. “A lot of the farms have been owned by families for years and it’s really cool to meet these people that work so hard to provide things for the community.”
Hanks said the event benefits the city and the chamber through bringing people into the historic downtown area.

Harvest Moon Hurrah

Each September, the Spanish Fork Arts Council sponsors the city’s Harvest Moon Hurrah, an event celebrating the harvest season and the arts. Held in Spanish Fork’s Library Park at Center and Main streets, the Harvest Moon Hurrah includes harvest-related games, crafts and activities as well as live music performances.
As part of the activities, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce offers a booth where children can make jack-o-lanterns to take home. This activity is provided free of charge through the sponsorship of the chamber’s plati-num members and the generosity of Randy Gordon Farms in Lake Shore, which donates the pumpkins used at the event.
Each year, the pumpkins are delivered to members of the Maple Mountain High School FFA who wash all the pump-kins, transport them to the chamber booth at the Harvest Moon Hurrah and help distribute them to the children. A variety of adhesive jack-o-lantern faces made of foam are provided by the chamber for the children to stick onto their pumpkins.
Volunteers from businesses and organizations such as Circle V Meat Co., SIC Tattooing, the Spanish Fork Youth
City Council and the Maple Mountain FFA all help staff the booth to provide assistance to the children. The craft is one of the most popular parts of the Harvest Moon Hurrah; in 2013, about 1,000 pumpkins were given out to local children.
These pumpkins were donated last year and given to lo-cal children as part of the Harvest Moon Hurrah.
Each October, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Scarecrow Contest, a com-petition encouraging local businesses and individuals to design creative scarecrows. The scarecrows are then set up along Spanish Fork’s Main Street. Competition categories are open for adults, children and businesses, and the $10 fee from each entry is pooled with additional funds from the chamber to provide cash prizes.
The scarecrows are displayed through October, and judges visit them to select the winners. The public can also cast votes for their favorite scarecrows on-line and at the Spanish Fork city build-ing, with the winner declared the recipi-ent of the People’s Choice Award. A separate and similar Scarecrow Contest is held each year in Salem for residents
and businesses in that community. The chamber is also involved each
October in the Main Street Trick-or-Treat event in Spanish Fork and the Salem Trunk-or-Treat event. The Span-ish Fork event is held on the Saturday before Halloween on Main Street. Businesses are invited to set up a table on Main Street and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Thousands of children participate in this event each year, with more than 3,000 attending in 2013.
The Salem Trunk or Treat also invites businesses to give candy to trick-or-treaters, but the Salem event is held in a parking lot and candy passed out from car trunks. It is also a popular event, with about 1,000 children participating in 2013. Both the Salem and Spanish Fork events provide businesses with an opportunity to get their names out to the
community and familiarize the pub-lic with the services or products they provide.

On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year, Main Street in Spanish Fork is lit up with festive floats and wagons as part of the Winter Lights Parade, an event sponsored annu-ally by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
Entry into this popular parade is free and open to all, but all entries must be lit in some fashion for the nighttime event. The Winter Lights Parade begins at 7 p.m. at 900 N. Main Street and proceeds south to 100 South before traveling around the city park and ending on Center Street at 100 East.
Businesses, families and other groups participate in the pa-rade each year, with the parade attracting entries such as hay wagons, city floats, horse riding clubs and marching bands. Musical groups also participate, including Christmas carolers, and the parade ends with a visit from Santa Claus who rides through the city on his sleigh. In 2013, the lights parade had about 42 entries.
Each year, the Brad Ford Award for Creative Excellence is awarded to one entry chosen by the Carol and Doug Ford Family. The winner receives a traveling trophy to display for a year at their place of business. 2013 winner was Lance Wilson State Farm with “Tow Mater.”
The chamber of commerce sponsors the parade as a com-munity service, which allows people to participate with no entry fee. The parade is shown live on SFCN Channel 17.
The Santa Claus Trophy for best parade entry in the 2013 Winter Lights Parade went to the Tow Mater truck entered by State Farm Insurance Agent Lance Wilson.

Dr. Jared Young, Audiologist and owner of Young Hearing, wants to provide hope for all those frustrated with hearing problems. Now in his 13th year, Dr. Young decided to go into audiology after serving an Ameri-can-Sign Language LDS mission and then working as a sign language interpreter at Utah State University.
His practice, now in its third year, serves people of all ages from babies to senior citizens, and specializes in both prevention of hearing loss and overcoming damage that has already occurred.
He provides hearing tests, can fit people for hearing aids, and even provide hearing protection for those who work in hearing-risk professions, such as musi-cians and factory workers. His practice is associated with Utah Ear Nose & Throat for easy referrals.
Dr. Young also believes in giving back to the com-munity. He works with local school districts to provide service to students about protecting their hearing and speaks to them about audiology as a career.
He has also been asked to present with larger organi-
zations such as Brigham Young University, Poll Sound and Rocky Moun-tain Power to train their employees/students about hearing loss prevention.
He has volunteered his time in the community and for the third year his office donated hear-ing aids to children and adults in need during the holiday season.
Because Dr. Young is a local private practice, he is able to give each patient personal attention, and find solutions, especially for those people who have not found success anywhere else.
To learn more about Dr. Young and his practice, please visit http://www.younghearing.com or call 801-489-7948.
Doctor improves hearing for all ages
