EXHIBITION: “Goya: chronicler of all wars. The disasters and war photography”

The exhibition “Goya: Chronicler of All Wars. The Disasters and War Photography”, places the figure of Goya as forerunner of photojournalism by using photography to bring Goya’s legacy closer to the present day. It is the war reporters who have taken on the same denouncement, who can be considered inheritors of the famous painter’s commitment. The 82 aquatint etchings that make up the series Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War) illustrate the rawness and savagery of war, in this case, the Peninsular War (1808 – 1814), with prints of unrestricted severity and an underlying condemnation of the senselessness of war and its devastating consequences. This is exactly the universal message that Goya wanted to convey and that, through the photographs of yesterday’s and today’s war reporters, still condemns armed conflicts. The series of prints is completed with a selection of photographs of the Spanish Civil War from the archives of the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid (National Library of Madrid) that demonstrate the universal power of the images of Los Desastres. The Spanish Civil War had tremendous international press coverage by extraordinary correspondents such as Robert Capa, David Seymour and Hans Namuth, as well as important Spanish photographers such as Agustí and Alfonso Sánchez. Using photography’s different applications from each time period, photographic documents of the main wars can be seen on this journey through the history of photojournalism, from the first correspondent sent to the Crimean War who photographed a war as organized as a military operation, to the Pulitzer and World Press Photo prizes, that harshly depict the images of the current conflicts covered in the press. It is the chronicle of images for our collective memory that has become an archive of the most terrible moments of our time.

FILM SERIES: “Buñuel’s surrealism in the Spanish and Latinamerican cinema”

Buñuel’s and his cinematographic surrealism’s influence is present in numerous figures of the Spanish and Latin-American cinema. This festival will show three works linked by both the implicit and explicit presence of this great Spanish filmmaker. “El ángel exterminador” (The Exterminating Angel) by Luis Buñuel, “La muerte de un burócrata” (Death of a Bureaucrat) by Tomás Gutierrez Aléa, and “Buñuel y la mesa del Rey Salomón” (Buñuel and King Solomon’s Table) by Carlos Saura.

• Synopsis After a dinner in the mansion of the Nóbile, guests find they cannot leave the place, for unexplained reasons. As days pass by in this same situation, the courtesy gives way to the most primitive and brutal survival instinct. A parable about the decomposition of a social class closed in on itself.

The nephew of the deceased will live amazing adventures to get the card back from the tomb of his uncle. This movie is a social satire that denounces an old evil, and its consequences and derivations, with the carefree mood that characterizes the Creole and Caribbean humour.

EXHIBITION: “Travelogue”

“Cuadernos de Viaje” (Travelogue) is the title of the exhibition by Isabel Herguera. It displays drawings and collages made during different stays in India, from October 2005 to April 2010. The exhibition represents in a free and intuitive way, travel impressions from the notebook and a mural/collage created directly on the wall with paintings, pieces of the notebook, objects and sounds. The atmosphere created on the notebooks was essential to create a universe where the animated short film that accompanies them “Amar” could be. Conducted in India, “Amar”, has been selected as the best Spanish shortfilm at Animadrid Festival, and it is a summary of her work over the past five years. It presents in a free and intuitive way, the impressions she had during her different stays in India. Isabel Herguera (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1961) discovered the animation thanks to a friend that showed her how a Bolex camera works. Since then, she imagines stories that take place in various locations around the world about scenarios that always fit in a suitcase. She worked in several animation studios in Los Angeles, EE UU. In 2003 she returned to Donostia since when she runs ANIMAC, the International Animation Film Exhibition of Catalonia, in Lleida. She also teaches animation in the National Institute of Design in India, where she goes every time she can to draw on all notebooks, especially at railway stations and bus stops.

Spanish experts on renewable energies will study renewable energy programmes of several Spanish private companies. Encouraged by the Development Plan (2000-2010), Spain has long been open to the use of renewable sources. In 2005 Spain became the first country in the installation of solar panels in new buildings and the second country Worldwide (after Israel) requiring installations of solar systems for warming water. Some autonomies will use 100% renewable source in few years. Spain is one of the five main nations investing in renewable energies internationally.

CONCERT: “Señorita” by Mª del Mar Fernández • Title: “Señorita”, from the OST of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara • Category: flamenco music concert • Date: Wednesday, 19/10/2011 • Time: 6.30 pm • Venue: Auditorium, Instituto Cervantes • Information: A Flamenco concert organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in India. The Flamenco singer María del Mar Fernández, is nowadays one of the voices in vogue in India thanks to the song “Señorita” from the movie “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”. Performed also by the Mumbay star Abhay Deol, “Señorita” has received hundred if thousands visits on Internet and it is a hit in Asia. In just three weeks millions of Indians listened and dance this catchy song that combines Spanish and Hindi lyrics. It has established the most effective cultural bridge to date between India and Spain. María del Mar Fernández is the first Spanish singer of a Bollywood song and everyday her Indian followers in the social networks ask for a live show.

CONCERT: “Electronic music. Travelogue”

Travelogue”) • Category: electronic music concert • Date: Saturday, 29/10/2011 • Time: 6.30 pm • Venue: Auditorium, Instituto Cervantes • Information: On the occasion of the exhibition “Travelogue” the musician Xabier Erkizia will offer as a macro and microscopic return journey to a cold and detailed virtual world of sound, precisely extracted from the same process that makes it possible. Xabier Erkizia (Lesaka, 1975) is a musician, a producer and journalist. His works is based on a research among different people, rounds and formats, in different situations such as sound installations, recordings and musical compositions, radio plays, group projects or collective improvisation… Since 2000, he co-directs the annual festival of other music ERTZ and the sound Department AUDIOLAB of the Contemporary Art Centre Arteleku of Donostia-San Sebastián.
