Spam – What is it?

• Spam is unwanted/unrequested commercial e-mail.

• Spam is also attempts to trick You for money or personal information, like passwords or account numbers.

• Spam is illegal in most European countries, but most spam isn’t European, in fact 70% of all spammail comes from Asia.

Do we have a spamproblem?

• Have you ever recieved a spammail?

• Are You familiar with anyone who’s recieved a spammail?

• Is the number of spammail climbing or dropping?

• Do You think those who send spam are getting smarter or dumber?

Page 4: SpamFence presentationSlide no. 1 Next generation spamprotection.

spamFence presentation Slide no. 4

How big is the problem?

• The number of spammails per employee has doubled in year 2002 compared to year 2001, Jupiter Media Metrix

• ”10% of our incoming e-mail is spam”, Børsen

• “About 20 percent of incoming messages to AT&T WorldNet are junk e-mail”, Janet Wyles, AT&T WorldNet

• “..costing an estimated $1 per piece in lost productivity” Chris Lewis (major telecommunications company)

What do most people do?

Companies who wish to reduce the number of spammails have uptil now had the following possibilities: • Create a simple filter in the e-mail program and throw e-

mails in the ”Junk mailbox”

• Order and use a simple spamfilter and sort out 20-50% spam and risk real e-mails being blocked aswell.

• Do nothing and delete the spammail when it has arrived.

Misunderstandings!

• ”A firewall stops spam!”

• ”I’ve deleted those messages in no time!”

• ”It (spam) will probably go away by itself!”

• ”We haven’t had a problem so far, so I don’t suspect anything will come our way!”

• ”Just sign off the mailing list and You won’t recieve it anymore!”

Why not use Outlook to filter?

• The function ”add to junk senders list” simply adds an e-mail address that probably doesn’t exit. A minute after You’ve added the e-mail address, a similar spammail could be received from another e-mail address.

• The spamsenders are clever enough to get passed almost any filter in Outlook.

That’s why we have to use more drastic measures to get rid of spam.

The 5 spamfilters

820 intelligent spam/antispam rules

These rules are made specific for detecting wether or not an e-mail is spam. The rules add or subtract points to the specific e-mail, ex. if the e-mail includes known spam language, then points are added.

DCC (Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse)

DCC checks the content of en e-mail and gives it a unique score. Should this unique score appear in over, say 1.000.000 e-mails, then there is a good possibility that the e-mail is spam. DCC servers is constantly updated everywhere on the Net and we check every e-mail against these.servers

STA (Statistical Token Analysis)

STA uses the Bayesian method to learn the local ”language” of the e-mails going through the STA filter. The filter learns which e-mails are ’good’ and which are spam and in that way are able to give better points to classify the e-mails.

RBL (Realtime Blackhole Lists)

RBL is the e-mail blackbook. If Your mailserver is open for rely You can be quite sure it will be listed here quickly. We check whether or not an e-mail comes from a mailserver listed in one of the many RBL servers we check. Different RBL servers has different priorities.

Personal Black & White lists

Finally the customer is able to produce their own blackbook. In the reportcenter You can easily add an e-mail address You want to block or recieve from. This also helps the customers to get rid of those ”hard-to-sign-off mailing lists”.
