Feliz 2015
It is said that experience is a plus, but when talent is added
to youth it does not envy even the most experienced. As in
so many other areas within the world of design, interior de-
sign and architecture, young people are a bonus worth bea-
ring in mind in our country, and in this issue of Spaincontract
we reflect this view, introducing readers to the Yonoh Studio
in Valencia responsible for some of the best known furniture
creations found in many companies and winners of awards
including the Red Dot Award or the Wallpaper Prize.
The architect Fran Silvestre is also a young person and the
author of our Meeting Point; and young people are also the
members of the design studio Triscaideca responsible for the
interior design of various fashionable locations in Madrid.
Young people have a lot to offer to the habitat segment, and
the contract business channel is the perfect scenario where
the ‘savoir faire’ of our manufacturers may be allied to the
freshness of new designers. We have the talent and we have
the structure in order for our products and ideas to find a place
in the best projects. Let’s face the new year with the impetus
of youth.
A Happy 2015

pended ceilings with the arrival of ‘Easy Cano-
py’, a practical acoustic solution that comes in
a complete kit for quick and easy installation.
It is available in both rectangular and square
plates, and is designed to improve the acous-
tics in spaces where there are high demands for
sound absorption, such as offices, classrooms
and halls in schools and hotels.
This is a noise-absorbing panel inspired by Bam-
boo cane. This new product, which was un-
veiled at the last Orgatec Fair alongside other
developments from this firm, is made of high
density felt. It is fixed to the wall to combine
with a drawing or composition, allowing one
to customize any space. It is ideal for spaces
where there are crowds of people, hotels, offi-

This relates to a new generation of solid surfa-
ces from the Porcelanosa Group. The surface is
warm to touch and is similar to stone and one
can build different designs and projects with it.
There is underneath a low-light relief, which
thanks to the purity of its lighting and by cut-
ting a 4mm thickness in the material allows the
passage of light, producing designs as if they
were created by a projection machine.
The digital print provides a collage of woods
with different tones and precedence which
come with a big 3D effect. The deterioration of
time and the raw nature of the pores and knots
of wood are softened by the combination of
neutral tones. They are an ideal design for areas
that encourage relaxation and disconnection.
These are new models based on an innovative
system of panels with clips creating original and
modern spaces thanks to their different mate-
rials, colours, textures and sizes. Their versatility
turns them into an essential element for any
project, as they can be assembled and disas-
sembled as many times as required renewing
the image of the space quickly without any
building work.

18 spaincontract. Meeting Point. Fran Silvestre

yecto.
House On The Cliff

The young Valencian architect Fran Sil-vestre sets out in this article the keys to design in our society and how they are applied in his studio to all types of projects.
The important role that design plays in society
is not lost on us. The attention to detail that our
studio prides itself on in all its works is a sign of
the importance that we give to design. This is
reflected through the desire to seek the beau-
ty of the built work, which, coupled with the
desire to give a technical answer to a specific
context which in turn is marked by a program
of requirements, a budget, the legislation and
the environment, constitutes an important part
of our commitment. This is a commitment to
both those who we are working with on the
project in question, but also to the people who
will use it and, of course, also with ourselves.
But design is not just a cosmetic issue.
From our point of view, it must satisfy a
number of issues that are going to actua-
lly deliver value and to justify design, and
that could be summarized in five keys:
The first should be directly related to con-
tinuity, understood as spatial continui-
ty, through research and the use of a
few materials, their integration, or the
search for continuity in time, carrying out
a design which will not become obsolete.
The second point is that design should be
innovative by using new materials, new te-
chnologies involving a contribution to the
improvement of tradition, based on the ex-
perience of existing knowledge and starting
from the premise of innovated-tradition.
The third aspect to consider is accuracy, which
for us is one of the keys to our working sys-

tem. This should be reflected in a concentra-
ted and attentive effort throughout the pro-
cess, from the initial idea to its realization,
and this can and should be seen in all the
phases of the design development in question.
Fourth, dialogue should always be present,
until design becomes part of the identity
of the client. It is a dialogue that seeks that
comfort should be on a par with the utility
and which examines the conflicts and joys of
everyday acts of human life, understanding
what needs to be covered. This is a subjecti-
ve parameter that should characterize each
Fran Silvestre (Valencia, July 5th, 1976) is an architect, designer and professor at the Polyte-
chnic University of Valencia in 2005 who founded the studio of Fran Silvestre Arquitectos.
He received the Red Dot Award in 2013 in the category of Product Design; the first prize of the
Concurso Peninsular Competition for the redevelopment of the crypt of the Colonia Güell in
Barcelona, and also the first prize in the competition for the remodeling of the Prado Recoletos
in Madrid, as a collaborator of the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Vieira.
In addition, the studio’s projects have been exhibited in various museums and galleries of con-
temporary art and published in international journals for architecture and design, such as the
Architectural Record, Wallpaper or TC Cuadernos, among others.
project providing it with a distinctive hallmark.
The fifth and last point should underline eco-
nomy. In this career one comes across very
different types of designs from large to small
ones, from architectural to product design.
There are cases which begin with big ticket
budgets, and others with reduced budgets, but
in all cases one has to pay particular attention
to cost, by avoiding waste. The design may be
a small part of a large project or a large part of
a small project, so long as each assignment is
understood as an opportunity to create a good
project.
All these points are executed by seeking exce-
llence in design, which lies in knowledge sha-
ring. It is based on the integration of a network
of professionals who enjoy their work. It is a
team of specialists in various fields such as ar-
chitecture, interior design, graphic design, pro-
duct design, acoustics, the design of structures
and facilities.
This integration results in an atmosphere of
shared creativity capable of generating a con-
tagious motivation that can take care of the
process and that is excited about what is to
unfold. n

The challenge of the receptionBeing an old apartment building, the main difficulty of the project was the fact that the hotel recep-tion on the ground floor could not be used for lack of space. “We literally turned it on its head in order to make it look like a visual stronghold” say Proxectos F1. Since the access was a portal of reduced dimensions and there was no space for a welcome area, the solution was to locate this zone in the ceiling area in such a way that access ups-tairs was not impeded.

calidez. “También hemos integrado en el pro-

“Esto lo conseguimos con mobiliario muy ligero

After a complete renovation carried out by the
studio of Proxectos F1 Interiorismo, a historic
building in the center of Santiago de Compos-
tela has become an oasis of light in a usually
dark city. The Lux Hotel has lived up to its name
(light, in Latin), creating light in a place where
such clarity is not expected. An old apartment
building has been rebuilt to produce a three star
hotel with 44 rooms, retaining the original fa-
cade and its hollow spaces, where “everything
revolves around each piece or designed object
getting brighter all the time,” says Proxectos
F1.
And the premise of this project was that light
should serve as a conducting axis of the interior
design. For this reason, the property is arranged
around two glazed courtyards, operating like
skylights, which bring natural light by day and
artificial light at night throughout the hotel.
The Light from the Darkness The light coming out of the darkness, as stated
in the Latin phrase “ex tenebris lux” is the the-
me of the entire project of this hotel, aimed at
directors as well as workers and tourists. “The
predominant color had to be therefore white”
explains Proxectos F1 Interiorismo, which has
combined with variations in a mink color with
some bleached wood creating a contrast with
the black color, the other main color at the Lux
Hotel.
To enhance the light coming through the
skylights, the flooring of the communicating
areas is white marble; in the corridors there
are floor tiles that look like a carpet forming a
random pattern; and in the rooms, a wooden
floor provides warmth. “We have also integra-
ted into the project a lot of glass which allows
the flow of light between the various rooms.”
The corridors are very neutral, a sobriety that
contrasts with the doors of the rooms, which
create a special atmosphere thanks to their tex-
tured fabric which make them different, “as if
they were papered or fabric-covered.”
Comfortable RoomsProxectos F1 decided that the rooms had to
meet a fundamental requirement: they were to
be very functional, while continuing to main-
tain the light as the conducting axis. “We have
achieved this with very light visual furniture,
based on metal structures and transparent po-
lypropylene.” The strong point of the room is
the frames that form the headboard and conti-
nue up to the ceiling, providing the room with
plenty of light without dazzling.n

Jorge Pastor, the interior designer, and project manager for the Bar Vasari explains that “the decorative solutions proposed by Finsa offered us wide leeway for meeting our targets in reforming the Bar Vasari. We chose to use Cambrian Oak, a modern design which incorporates melamine and which is very advanced in terms of a natural wood finish. Melamine is a very sui-table material at this time of economic crisis, because it adapts to the current type of job where we must assess costs, time and the aesthetic results. “
The contract business requires a different ap-proach for handling each new project. Cus-tomers today demand flexibility in implemen-tation, in the flexibility of spaces, in materials integration and in sustainability and customi-zation. These are the challenges for interior designers who require a new perspective that combines decorative solutions, professionalism and respect for the environment.
To meet these aims Finsa has created a cata-log designed for the contract business, with one common denominator: wood. The settings have to be increasingly attractive and have to fit the budgets and times that customers face. In this sense, derived timber products find themselves as most suitable for material cons-truction because of their ease of installation and execution, overall cost savings, and for the beauty and versatility of their finish. This final finish is warm and functional and is adaptable to any trend and style.
The five keys according to Finsa1. Decorative solutions that facilitate a quick and uncomplicated reform (dry work).2. Given the overwhelming supply of compa-nies and materials in the industry, Finsa, as the sole supplier, offers a wide decorativeproduct range. 3. Creation of unique spaces by customization via its “fingerprint” service.4. Finsa meets environmental requirements through the certification of its materials.5. It provides advice on the application and combination of materials in order to create de-termined aesthetic outcomes, within its own Trends Guide.
Trends that guideFinsa’s guide for interior designers covers three very current decoration themes: Natural & Organic, Authentic & Timeless and Subtle & Luxurious. A new look at decoration solutions results in the idea of a wide range of decorative surfaces like natural veneer, laminated, mela-mine and laminated flooring; and decorative supports like Greenpanel, Fibraform and Fibra-colour. All the supports and surfaces, as well as a variety of finishes are available in the new catalog with augmented reality technology available through two options:1-By logging onto the following address: www.decofinsa.finsa.com/app/ via smartphone or ta-blet and downloading the “Decofinsa” appli-cation in order to interact with the catalog through Augmented Reality. This application is valid on both Apple and Android.2-By going to “Ap Store” or “Google Play” and downloading the “Decofinsa” application on your smartphone or tablet. When you open the application, you can download the program by placing the tablet’s camera or the smartphone against the images that are marked with an icon of either a tablet / smartphone.

combination of finishes on the said panels. The possibilities are limited
to the creativity of the author of the project and the best of all is that
Serastone® is removable, thus, its interchangeable panels may be used
in any decorative variation as often as desired, creating a new decorative
element that completely changes the aesthetic space.
Infinite possibilities for the Contract BusinessFor Contract business space such in hotels, restaurants, offices, airports,
shops, clinics, etc., Serastone® is considered a tool that offers major
constructive and decorative solutions. At the same time, it represents an
interesting investment for the client taking into account its character as
an active element. The initial idea for the space can be changed after a
while, providing another setting with the same panels, giving life to a
new ambientation with which to impress the public while respecting the
general line that marks the style of the establishment.
Also, one should note that the panels can be customized, designed ac-
cording to the visual and corporate identity of the company. This ensures
that each project is unique. And whether you talk about a proposed new
construction or that of a reform, after a preliminary study, the assembly
can be undertaken in record time, since no changes need be made to

or imperfection in the wall.
The Serastone® system is a system of sustainable decoration in itself,
inspired by the ‘Cradle to Cradle’® philosophy whose goal is to cause
the least possible environmental impact, hence the concept of mounting
and dismounting. Moreover, everything is reusable and / or recyclable,
including the panels as well as the structure that underpins the system.
With Serastone® the decoration can be changed as often as desired,
bearing in mind that this material has no expiration date and does not

32 spaincontract. Coffee Break. Yonoh
mos llegar. Está claro que los premios que he-
mos obtenido nos han ayudado mucho aunque
también hemos trabajado mucho para conse-
guirlos.
A partir de ahí aplicamos nuestro ‘know-how’ y
nuestra identidad propia.
cosas simples.

Vamos cambiando conforme vamos hacien-
do diseños. Nuestra niña bonita siempre es el
último proyecto que hemos hecho. Aunque
No todas.
día si quieres destacar y diferenciarte no pue-
en baño, que no lo habíamos trabajado nunca;

them. Of course they provide you with good
support, but they do not guarantee a job, that’s
something you have to earn day by day.
What is the leitmotiv of Yonoh? What inspi-res you?We are fortunate to work in many different areas:
we design lighting, chairs, playgrounds ... Each
project is different and the inspiration it provi-
des gives you the product itself. For example,
our latest project is inspired by fishing cork; the
inspiration is created by the material in this case.
How do you tackle each project, how does the creative process unfold with the custo-mer?It depends on the client. Some of them give us
some ‘briefings’ and others not, but they always
indicate the type of commercial product they
want. From that point we apply our know-how
and our own identity. The products at Yonoh
we design are the result of a development and
very extensive early work, but the end result is a
simple object. We do like to make simple things.
The idea of being proposed for a prize such as the Red Dot is initiated by yourselves or by the client?Normally it is the company which believes that
the product can win a prize and it is the com-
pany which proposes us. We have won prizes
for products and others on behalf of the stu-
dio itself. We normally get awards for being
“young” designers, but now I am not sure if
we are still considered young – he laughs-. It’s
funny because ten years ago the Elle Decor
magazine nominated me as a young desig-
ner, and this year the magazine repeated the
nomination for the same category, so today I
do not know when one stops being young!
Of all the areas in which you work -graphics, installations, products ... which one do you prefer?Undoubtedly it is the product area. It is whe-
re we come from, we are industrial desig-
ners. It is the area that is the most difficult
to stand out in because there is tremen-
dous competition, but it is our passion.
What award are you most proud of?
There are 3 or 4 prizes that are very impor-
tant in the design world and we have won
them all. Probably I would choose the award
that we won for the umbrella called the “Lily
of Samoa”, because it was our first product
that was recognized by the Wallpaper De-
sign Award and by Good Design, and that
made us particularly proud. Even then at a
later date, our lamp called “Pleg for Lzf” ex-
ceeded it in terms of number of prizes. We
have since then also repeated these victories.
And which, among your products, is the prettiest girl?We change according to the designs with
which we are involved. Our prettiest girl is
always the latest project. Although we love
working with Spanish companies, we are also
fond of international projects because they
have an element of greater complication.
What is the most complicated in the process of designing a product?Whenever we design something we start from
the basis of how it is going to be produced.
If we are to make a chair, it is very difficult to

“We like to design simple objects”
35
Mueble, produc-to, packaging, imagen corporativa, instalaciones…
“We started in 2006 with a desire to improve things, to turn things upside down, to help companies and users to interact with each other and with the objects that surround us. We believe that design should not be a wrapper in order to decorate, but it should accompany a company from the beginning and should form part of the company “. With this phrase Clara del Portillo and Alex Selma, founders of Yonoh studio, explained their philosophy. Furniture, products, packaging, corporate identity, facilities ... Yonoh manages all styles of design from its headquarters in the heart of Valencia. So far it has experienced countless successes, awards and collaborations with signature companies like Inclass, Capdell, Roca, Fambuena, Tadel, Sancal and LZF, among others.
make it distinctive because there are already
thousands. The hard part is to differentiate it.
For example, what we sought with the Polo
Chair, by Capdell, was to create a striking re-
sult which at the same time was comfortable.
What differences do you find between pro-duct design for the contract business or for the habitat business? In contract projects sofas need not be as
comfortable as those for the home; they
might be more generous in terms of size ...
chairs need to be stackable, etc ... When
we think about designing we consider the
space where the product will be located.
Do you think it’s a good time for Spanish design?Today there are many well-known Spanish
studios. It is not a good time for the Spanish
market but studios have taken advantage of
the opportunity. Personally in general I do not
find large differences between the Spanish and
European design, today we are all connected
and at the end you distinguish yourself becau-
se of the things you do either right or wrong.
Do you think habitat companies are aware of the importance of design? Not all. There are some but they are few. The
vast majority are not accustomed to working
with design because it is more expensive, be-
cause they do not think it will bring any added
value, because they never have needed it to sell
and they have survived for a long time with the
same attitude. Today if you want to stand out
and differentiate yourself you can not do so
without a design studio that helps you to bring
value to what you do.
What do you think of the changes at the Habitat Fair of Valencia? One can see how the sector has declined, but
we value the Fair and it provides us with hope
that design is important and that we are all
doing what we can.
Are you considering moving out from Spain as other design studios have done or are you thinking of staying in Valencia? We are very happy in Valencia; we have
a branch in Australia, where we mainly
work on graphics. We travel there from
time to time. But we are established here.
What is your next project? We are involved in a project for a ceramic bath,
something which we have never worked on;
and we also involved with chairs and sofas.
Over the shorter term we have graphic design
projects, which are always different from pro-
duct design, which takes place over a longer
time range. To begin a project knowing that it
will be completed in a month is very rewarding.
Lately we have made many catalogs and stren-
gthening brand image.n
