Spain is located in the southwest of Europe, littered with hundreds of

beaches, flamenco dancers swirling in color and bullfighters parading their stuff in the bullrings, Spain is a passionate nation. This country is a popular destination for thousands of people from all across the world.

Spain is beautiful and diverse . It’s a country of large geographical and cultural diversity. Spain has it all; with green lush meadows, deep blue valleys, snowy mountains in the North and the golden desert zones in the South. The wide white sand beaches of Spain are world famous along with the exotic black sand beaches of the volcanic Canary Islands.

Spain is home to castles and medieval towns which are scattered across the interior. The villages are surrounded by mountain ranges . Today, after 30 years of democracy and a fast economic development, Spain’s cities have a modern life. A swarm of local and international architects have made their mark with signature buildings in Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid, just to name a few.

Spaniards love to eat, drink, and be merry. They have quite the zest for life!

Within Spain there are a number of nationalisms

and regionalisms, reflecting the country's complex history. The official language of Spain is Spanish.

There are substantial populations outside Spain with ancestors who emigrated from Spain; most notably in Hispanic America.

The population of Spain is becoming increasingly diverse due to recent immigration. From 2000 to 2010, Spain had among the highest per capita immigration rates in the world and the second highest absolute net migration in the World (after the USA) and immigrants now make up about 10% of the population.

76% self-identify as Christian Catholics. Symbolism is an important part of the Spanish peoples’

culture. Spain's different regions, or smaller entities within them, depict themselves richly through references to local legend and custom; classical references to places and their character; Christian heroic tales and events; and the regions' roles in Spain's complex history.

Spain's main national dishes are the stuffed peppers, the

tortilla Española (Spanish omelet , a thick cake of eggs and sliced potatoes), and cured hams and sausages. Tomato gazpacho is one of the Spanish dishes that has an international presence, as do paellas and mountain hams.

Each region has a version of a midday stew that in some households is eaten at least once a day.

A small breakfast of coffee and/or small pastries is eaten at some point in the morning. The meal eaten at 2pm is the biggest meal and people will come home in order to have it. Supper is usually eaten late, around 10pm.

• Spain is known for its festivals during the New Year and Easter weeks. Along with these festivals, each city or town has a big feast to celebrate their community’s Saint.

Bull fighting • It is an aristocratic sport. Practiced in two different ways, either

the rider or his mount are to face the bull directly or they practically sideswipe the animal trying to spear it during the fight. This is one of the most dangerous and unique sports of Spain and an integral part of the traditions in Spain.

Music • Music in Spain is varied in form and style, although for many citizens, it is

synonymous to Flamenco. But there is also existence of rock music, folks, pop, and hip hops in Spanish lands.

Dance • Spanish Dance can be defined as a complicated dance movement

that originates from the native country of Spain and is not predominately influenced by other communities or culture. There are 6 main types of dance; Flamenco, Estilizació, Folklore, Eighteenth Century Dances, Classical Ballet Dance, and Castanets

My name is Rita Harvey I grew up in Everett and Marysville

and lived in Denver, CO for 5 years in my mid-20’s.

I love to travel and hopefully will be able to go to Spain (along with many other countries) some day.

Reading, exercising, eating good food, exploring cities (especially Seattle), and watching movies are some of my favorite things.

I’m attending Western Washington University with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.
