Introduction

Spain continues to offer the savvy wine consumer superb drinking value.Since our first offering in 2005, Spain has catapulted to the top of the wineworld category, and consumers have caught on and have embraced whatthe country has to offer wine lovers. There is an embarrassment of riches, wines with style personality and above all a sense of place. Spain is blessedwith over 50 different regions, ten unique soil types and seven distinctclimatic zones. With such diversity and an incredible winemaking historythere is little wonder why the wines have been embraced by consumers andjournalists alike.

My wife Michelle and I spent two weeks in Barcelona and Seville lastMarch sourcing out new wines and eating and drinking our way throughthe two cities, not such a bad way to experience the country and gain a fewpounds. I had a very specific vision of what I was looking for; wines whichoffer the consumer value and flavour while keeping that distinct Spanishflair to them. Some of these wines are old favourites that I discovered onprevious trips, while some of them are brand new exciting discoveries. Ithink this offering showcases a wide array of Spanish wines and styles thatreally shows the uniqueness and diversity of the country. I am verypleased to be able to offer you the following selection of my favouriteSpanish discoveries.

In order to preserve the integrity of the wines we have once again, shippedour entire order in a refrigerated container. While this process is slightlymore expensive, it ensures that the wines I tasted in Spain is what you willtaste in Vancouver. Enjoy!

Alvarez Y Diez, RuedaThe Rueda region has come a long way in a very short time. Fewcompanies have done more to promote the wines of Rueda than Alvarez yDiez, based in the town of Nava del Rey, close to Valladolid. Brother'sAlvaro and Juan de Benito inherited the company from their father, who inturn had bought the company as a result of purchasing wine from it asChristmas gifts for his stock broking clients. When he took the winery over,it was producing the Rueda wines of old - heavy, oxidized and sherry like -a far cry from the wines of today. Under the careful nurturing of Alvaro andJuan, Alvarez y Diez moved its well known Mantel Blanco brand towardsthe emerging, more modern style of wine and began to see an increasingpublic interest in the white wines of Spain. And with small holdings in theToro region, Alvarez Y Diez has now started to produce some top notch redwine as well.

2007 Monte Alina Rueda - $17.90“The Rueda region of Spain is making the country's raciest, most excitingwhite wines. This is potent, pungent stuff, filled with intense herbaceous, tropical fruit notes and crisp mouthwatering acidity.Electrifyingly brilliant, leaving the tongue tingling!”- Winemaker’s Notes

2006 Monte Alina Toro - $23.90“The Toro region has a reputation for making someof Spain's best reds and now that the rather robusttannins are being handled better there has neverbeen a better time to try them. Alvarez Y Diez'brilliance for making white wines has not hinderedthem in making a superb, modern example of Toro. This is full bodied but relatively soft and creamy with dark ripe fruit, hintsof chocolate and tobacco. Stunning!” - Winemaker’s Notes

Angel Lorenzo Cachazo, RuedaIn 1988 the first wines were made at Angel Lorenzo Cachazo’s new wineryof Pozaldez, a village located within the boundaries of the Ruedaappellation. The family has a long tradition of producing wines in theregion dating back to the great-grandparents of the present owners. In theheart of the old underground cellars, they made the traditional andhistorical wines of the former “Tierra de Medina” (Medina’s lands) whichwere famed during the flourishing days of Medina del Campo Fairs. (Angel Lorenzo Cachazo cont’d) … New, more modern facilities(inaugurated in 1988) led to a change in the production of the area’straditional wines and a commitment to make modern white wines withup-to-date techniques by applying the right equipment for the situation.Even with the advent of modern winemaking technology, they are equallyconcerned about a good selection of raw material, as all great wines aremade in the vineyard. These are as good of white wines as you will findanywhere in the world right now.

Conde de San Cristóbal, Ribera del Duero- Not yet available - Arriving Soon! This winery was founded in the year 2000, and has beenpicking up major international acclaim since its inception. The vineyards and winery are located close to Peñafiel onthe Pago de Valdestremero Estate, and cover an area ofmore than 80 hectares. A limited quantity of high qualityred wine is produced with the name Conde de SanCristóbal, exclusively from their vineyards. The vineyardsin this region have been renowned for centuries for theexcellent grape growing conditions. On the 80 ha. estatesurrounded by long rows of vines of Tinto Fino, CabernetSauvignon and Merlot, the viticulture methods arefundamentally minimalist, since they lay the foundations for the wines. The choice of these varietals is based on the analysis of the local soils andclimate, and they considered these grapes to be ideal for the style of winethey are searching for. No herbicides or pesticides are used, only organicfertilizers. The first pruning is in the winter with a second in the summer. The quality of the fruit is top priority, and that really shows in the finishedproduct. These are textured and expressive wines, full of Spanish sunshine.

2005 Conde San Cristóbal - $39.90 or $74.80 for 1.5L"The 2005 Conde San Cristóbal is the same blend as the 2004 (80% TintaFina, 10% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) and received the same oaktreatment (12 months). It is a bit less fragrant and more marked by oak. Onthe palate it is more backward and structured, needing at least 3-5 years toshow its best stuff. Aside from that, it has a similar flavor profile and a long, pure finish. Drink it through 2025. 91+ points" - Jay Miller, Wine Advocate # 175

La Conreria d’Scala Dei, PrioratLa Conreria de Scala Dei has to be one of the most beautifully locatedwineries in the Iberian Peninsula. Dominio de Tares, BierzoFounded in 2000, the Dominio de Tares wine estate has been quick to makea mark on Spain's up-and-coming Bierzo region, earning a reputation forwell-balanced, elegant wines. International varieties are shunned in favourof two native grapes: the white Godello and the red Mencía. Ancestors ofthese grapes are said to date back to ancient Roman times, when Bierzo´sLas Medulas were important gold mines and when Romans settled the area, cultivating vineyards during their stay. Although these ancient and tradi-tional grapes are still largely unknown beyond Spain, their complexity andconcentrated flavours have many wine experts buzzing that Bierzo could beSpain's next big appellation after Priorat. The region, located in Spain’snorthwest, tucked just under Galicia, is gorgeous and one of Spain’sbest-kept secrets. Soft gentle hills, charming historic towns on the SaintJames pilgrimage, tidy patchwork vineyards, and small quaint hotels, allmake Bierzo a wonderful place to enjoy a gourmet wine tour while inSpain. As Bierzo is considered to be one of the most exciting wine regionsin Spain, Dominio de Tares, is also considered to be one of the most excitingwineries in the region. Located in San Roman de Bembibre in the HighBierzo, the winery sources grapes from throughout the Bierzo DO(“Denominación de Origen”, the equivalent of France’s AOC system). Thisregion has been called a "puzzle" of different microclimates and terroirs, and vineyards are located in pockets where the high altitudes (vineyards areplanted as high as 800 meters), mild climate and intense sunshine createoptimal growing conditions. Dominio owns some of the region's oldestvineyards; most vines are at least 40 years old, and many are as old as 80.

Dominio Dostares, Castilla y León.The Dominio Dostares is an exciting new venture from the owners ofDominio des Tares, and with this new project they plan the samephilosophy as Dominio de Tares, focussing on native varietals and theretrieval of old vineyards together with their own vinification methodswith the unmistakable character of their previous wines. As far as geologyand climate are concerned, this area is very different from Bierzo. UnlikeBierzo with a rather high rainfall, in Pajares de los Oteros there is less thanhalf the level of rainfall. The climate is also more extreme with minimumtemperatures at night slightly lower and maximum temperatures during theday typical of the continental climate. For this new project they managed toacquire 115 hectares (287 acres) of old vineyards with (Cont’d)

(Dominio Dostares cont’d) … Prieto Picudo as the predominant redvarietal, a grape with great potential, but now with scarce acreage left to befound. The vines of Prieto Picudo look like creeping plants with thetraditional “rastra” pruning and the vineyards are around 100 years old. Themain characteristics of the Prieto Picudo varietal are its low yield with anexcellent ratio between the skin and the pulp as well as an importantpolyphenolic content. This results in wines with an amazing colourintensity and an incredible structure balanced by a very high acidity levelthat gives plenty of freshness. It'swines like this that really make usexcited, the chance to find a greatnew region, and help breath lifeback into a grape that was headingfor certain extinction if not for thiswinery.

2005 Estay - $22.90"The 2006 Estay is 100% Prieto Picudo sourced from old vines and aged for6 months in French and American oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers upnotes of cedar, pencil lead, violets, and wild blueberry. On the palate thewine is fruit-forward buttressed by lively acidity. The importer likens it toBarbera from Piedmont and that is a good analogy. Drink this food friendlyeffort over the next 6-8 years. It is an excellent value. 89 points.” - Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate, #175

2005 Leione - $32.90"The 2005 Leione, 100% Prieto Picudo, is opaque purple with an expressiveperfume of wood smoke, mineral, blueberry, and black cherry that jumpsfrom the glass. Firm, balanced, and lengthy, it will evolve in the bottle forseveral years and drink well through 2015. 91 points." - Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate #175

2005 Cumal - $49.90 or $114.80 for 1.5L“100% Prieto Picudo. Attractive deep garnet-red colour with claret glints.Clear and bright with beautiful legs. Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, AlicanteBodegas Enrique Mendoza was born in 1989 as a family business, but theproject was forged at the end of the 70’s, when due to his restlessness,Enrique Mendoza started to buy, collect and invest in wine from otherwineries as an amateur. Later, recovering the family tradition of winemaking for family consumption in the Marina Baixa, the first 2000 plantswere planted, which today has transformed into a winery in Alfaz del Pi,with 1400 barrels made from the best French and American forests. Theirawareness towards vine growing has led them to grow grapes withoutherbicides or insecticides and fed only with compost. The vineyards aregrown in a manner scientifically supported by dendrometry (a techniquewhich lets them control the hydro-stress of the plants) and precision grapegrowing, conscious that, asEnrique is fond of saying, "Thebest wine is in the best vineyard."This is another great example ofthe killer values that Spaincontinues to produce.

2005 Merlot Crianza - $26.90“Red ruby colour with maroon sparkles and a high-medium layer. On themouth it is mature, calm with a fine and elegant tannin charge. Thebouquet reminds of lower mountain herbs like rosemary, lavender, andthyme. Red fruits join, as well as floral aromas, characteristic of this variety.Due to the handmade elaboration, Bodegas Mendoza recommends todecant, as natural sediments may appear with aging.” - Winemaker’s Notes

Bodegas Esapaña Auténtica, - Not yet available - Arriving Soon!Bodegas España Auténtica was created early in 2005 with the idea ofcombining a New World approach of varietal wines into an old world, DOorientated wine producing country like Spain. The three partners involvedin this company, spotted the opportunity of offering the internationalmarkets wines with true character, from indigenous grape varieties. Theythought there was enough Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz in the world andthat Spain has enough great local grape varieties to show the world. Theirprime examples are Tempranillo but also Garnacha, Monastrell, Viura,Albariño and others. The philosophy of Bodegas España Auténtica lies verymuch in offering varietal wines with an excellent quality to price ratio, andhand selecting the best cuvées from the wineries they work with, all undertheir control.

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero, Ribera del DueroJosé Maria García and Milagros Figuero are a vine-growing couple whohave devoted their entire lives to looking after their "majuelos," or youngvines. They are proud heirs to a culture that has been handed down throughseveral generations. Each day is filled with the care of more than 45hectares of vines, over half of which were carefully and meticulouslyfarmed by their ancestors, some of the vines still producing grapes todaydate back to the 1930s. After many years of concentrating exclusively onthe cultivation of their vines with the aim of producing "top flight" grapesthat were then turned into the finest quality wines by renowned winemakers in Spain's premiere Ribera del Duero wine regions, the coupledecided to embark on a project that they knew would take a great deal oftenacity and expertise - to make their own wines. Their simple,straight-forward mission statement is to "make the Garcia Figuero winesand winery reflect the experience, hard work and perseverance ofgenerations." Granja de Remelluri, RiojaHistorical records show that the La Granja Nuestra Senora de Remelluri wascontributing wine to the town council of nearby Labastida in the 15thcentury - one of the earliest references to a bodega in Spain. Today, the100ha estate, situated in the Western corner of the Rioja Alavesa betweenthe Tolono mountain range and the River Ebro, is one of Rioja's mostprestigious and most sought after. Entirely estate based, and thereforeunusual for Rioja, the vineyards are spread over a multitude of smallterraced plots. The estate has poor soils which when coupled with theraised altitude, result in restricted yields and grapes with ample tannins yetbalanced with proper acidity to ensure great ageing potential for the wines.Remelluri wines are exciting in that they exactly reflect the soils fromwhich they are grown. There is a minerality and tightness coupled withfirm tannins and lifted acidity that are indicative of grapes grown onmeager, high altitude sites. Remelluri wines perhaps reflect the timelessqualities that are to be found on the estate. There is a sense here that whilsteverything is of the highest quality, this is not a producer that will followfashion but will always strive for the ultimate in quality. Remelluri isrightly renowned as one of the finest producers in the Rioja region and it'seasy to see why. This is great discoveryfor the store, and we are very excited toamong a lucky few to be able to offerthese wines.

Marqués de Vargas, RiojaThe winery Marqués de Vargas was built in 1989 on theHacienda Pradolagar Estate in Logroño and was the firstproject of the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas. Thewinery, set in the middle of its own vineyards like a“château”, is located in the heart of the Ebro Valley, ina region known as the “Three Marquis”. In this winerythree premium single vineyard red wines are producedin limited production. Saying Marqués de Vargas in thewine world is naming four generations dedicated to theproduction and sales of excellent Rioja wines. The titleof the Marqués de Vargas is held by a family closelylinked to this important viticultural region in Spain. It was in 1840 that Felipe de Mata, the eighthMarqués de Vargas, planted the first vines in theoutskirts of Logroño. Especially memorable was Hilariode la Mata, the father of the current Marqués de Vargas, who for years presided over one of the mostemblematic wineries in Rioja. In 1989, Pelayo de la Mata, the currentMarqués de Vargas, realized his father’s dream by building a winery on theEstate Hacienda Pradolagar in Logroño. The property has an area of only 65hectares, and is planted with the red varieties Tempranillo, Mazuelo,Graciano and Garnacha. The vines are planted on virus-free American baseplants and are protected from westerly winds. The soil is calcareous-clayey,very poor in nutrients, but excellent for the quality it produces. The vinesare never watered so as to avoid the weakening of the tannins, and nopesticides or herbicides are used. The vine stocks are pampered year-roundthrough different pruning processes and the removal of some grapes toimprove the quality of the remaining grapes. The production level isrestricted to between 4,000 and 5,000 kg. per hectare in order to harvest thegrapes at their optimum level of acidity, tannic structure and alcoholpotential. Only red Reserva wines are made at this prestigious estate.

Miguel Merino, RiojaThere is always a gleam in Miguel’s eyeand he is passionate about everything hedoes. After 20 years in the wine tradeand impressed by the quality and age ofits vineyards, Miguel Merino selected athree thousand square metre property inBriones to open a bodega with his name, situated around a stone house that wasbuilt in 1818. His vineyards range in agefrom 36-54 years old and the winery is amodern facility, with vinification andbottling rooms that were built at itsinception in 1993. Viña Pedrosa, Ribera del DueroJohn had to contain himself when hefirst sat down and tasted these wines. What a find - pure and honest - thegreatness of Spain is found here.Patriarch Don Mauro nearly pulled outhis vineyards to replace them with graincrops but his three sons were soconvinced of the potential of his old sitethat they took it over in 1980. The sonscurrently run 120 ha of vineyards of low-yielding, concentrated, Tinto Fino (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) toproduce what they had intended to from the beginning – serious wineswith character, strength and elegance that have demanded attention fromboth the domestic and international marketplace. Bodegas San Gregorio, CalatayudBodegas San Gregorio was established in 1965 inCervera de la Cañada and is part of theDenominación de Origen of Calatayud. In thisregion, situated in the ´Sistema Iberica´ areselected the best grapes from the Ribota Valley, the most north westerly zone of the region. SanGregorio makes wine from some 900 hectares offruit owned solely by the 250 members whichform the co-operative. Approximately one halfof the vineyard area consists of bush vine headtrained Garnacha with an average vine age ofover 40 years. Tempranillo is the second most planted variety. In recentyears the new varieties Shiraz and Cabernet have been introduced whichhave acclimatized perfectly in the soils and climate of the valley. Theregion combines various unique climatic and geographical features whichinclude an altitude of between 664 and 830 metres above sea level, minimum rainfall and a tremendous difference between day time and nighttime temperatures during the ripening period. The vineyards are situated ona mixture of red clay and limestone soils with a high stone content thatpermits the natural drainage of water. All of these factors reinforce thepresence of a unique microclimate that favours an environment with verylittle disease pressure combined with low grape yields. Consequently thegrapes are of the highest quality culminating in their large range of wines. For years these have been some of the finest value wines we have evercome across. They are well made wines, full of flavour and a total bargain.

"This wine was a big hit last time around. Good Albariño always remindsme of a drier style Riesling, clean, crisp, steely and full of fruit flavour. Thisstuff is so tasty, and so refreshing, I wish I could drink it everyday. Thisshould be your new favourite oyster wine - John Clerides

2007 Davila - $34.90“A blend of Albarino, Loureira and Treixadura. A yellow straw wine, witha soft green reflection and steely details, very brilliant and clean. It shows awide aromatic panel where the citric notes of lime and orange skin standout wrapped out by hints of apricot and a delicate and fresh herb finish.- Winemakers Notes

“This is one of the finest whites I had on my tasting trip across Spain. Thesewines have a lot in common with a great dry Riesling, but they also havean intriguing briny mineral element to them, that when matched with thelocal cuisine (think oysters and sardines) is really quite magic. The Davilais a beguiling wine, so delectate and soft, yet very aromatic and packed withflavour. If you like elegant, crisp white wines, you really have to give thisone a go.” - John Clerides

REAL WINE:Crafting wine is no easy task. It takes dedication, hard work and passion. Byreal wine we mean crated by real people and not institutions.

- Low Yields – vignerons who do not try and extract more from their vines. They take what the vines can give. If that means they can only produce asmall amount of flavourful wine so they can maintain their standards – sobe it.

- Stewards of the Land – people who farm in a responsible, sustainablemanner. They craft wines with style personality and flavour unique to theirplace or origin.

- Natural winemaking –this can be taken to extremes, in our context, vignerons who use natural yeast. These yeasts are found on the grapes andnot in a packet or catalogue.

- Minimal or no filtration – no stripping out of flavour; this may mean youmay find some sediment in your wines.

- Refreshing to taste- too many wines rely on high alcohol for flavour.Wine is a beverage which is refreshing not fatiguing to drink; you want tohave a second glass.

COMMUNITY BASED:Marquis Wine Cellars is a community based business. We do our utmost tosupport the culinary arts and community charities which contribute to thewell being and enhancement of our neighbourhood and the City ofVancouver
