Paula BonetPaula Bonet (Vila-real, Valencia, 1980) holds a degree in Fine Arts by the Polytechnic University of Valencia and she completed her training in Santiago de Chile, New York City, and Urbino. The techniques she works with include oil painting, engraving (chalcographic, xylographic, lithographic), silk-screen printing, and also illustration. She has illustrated books and collections of poems, but her great success came with her first book consisting of both text and illustrations, What To Do When THE END Appears On The Screen (Ed. Lunwerg). In 2015, she published 813 (Ed. La Galera), an illustrated homage to the French filmmaker François Truffaut. Her works have been shown in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Oporto, Paris, London, Rome, Frankfurt, Belgium, Urbino, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, and Berlin. Charged with poetry, her work has multiple ramifications from newspaper and magazine illustrations (Diari Ara, Yorokobu, Revista Kireei, Revista Calle 20, Ling, ESCAC, Caràcters, Le Cool) to stage design, poster design (The Black Keys, Vetusta Morla, Jacko Hooper, Christina Rosenvinge), and mural painting (Spanish Cultural Center in Mexico City, Center Gabriela Mistral in Santiago de Chile, Hotel Alberta in Barcelona).

Why are we so fascinated by riddles?

Most of us feel compelled by images and objects that are paradoxical or unreal, but look convincing and puzzling. Images as intriguing as our design cover, a portrait titled ‘Dona Iceberg’ by prominent illustrator Paula Bonet, one of the artists featured in ‘Spanish Illustrators, The Color of Optimism.’ This exhibit, which will premiere in Washington D.C. displays the creativity of a new generation of Spanish artists that cross boundaries and experiment with this hybrid genre, one of the most versatile of the contemporary visual art scene.

Pablo Picasso once said “Art washes away from the soul the dust of our everyday life”, and no other art form engages our imagination as the seventh art does. In 2016, our official traveling Festival of New Spanish Cinema will launch its 9th edition, a selection of the best recent movies produced in Spain.

This quote holds true for music and literature, which also reveal the magic in the mundane. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of

the death of Miguel de Cervantes, we will pay homage to our most universal author by exploring his life and by reflecting upon his

contributions to world literature and culture.

2016 will also mark the 100th anniversary of Enrique Granados’ death, one of our foremost composers and piano

players. Flamenco Festival will also be back this season with a blend of tradition and innovation.

This Spring/Summer season SPAIN arts & culture will be filled with a myriad of cultural

events for you to enjoy. It goes without saying that we hope you can join us.

When Optimism Is The Best Stroke

MARIO SUÁREZ Journalist and art curator, who has worked for several newspapers and magazines such as El País, GQ Magazine, Esquire... He is the author of several books about street art and illustration.

Not even Salvador Dalí could imagine that his work as illustrator would be recognized years later. Or that he would influence future generations of Spanish illustrators that witnessed an international revival of this artistic discipline. This Spanish artist experimented with collage, acrylic, pencil sketch, and various other techniques in order to develop as an illustrator. Dalí had already begun to illustrate magazines in Spain between 1927 and 1929, such as La Gaceta Literaria and L’Amic de les Arts, but it was not until the 1930s, during one of his first trips to the United States, that he began to collaborate with the American press. He designed two covers for The American Weekly and Industrial Life, in addition to other illustrations for Vogue, Life, Script, and Nugget, and even advertisements in Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country. These illustrations by one of the most important Spanish artists of all times were preceded in art history by his fellow countrymen such as Picasso, who created more than 2000 engravings and illustrations inspired by bullfighting and El Greco. Moreover, this tradition in Spanish art had been previously cultivated by Goya, the pioneer of the engraving technique in the 17th century.

Some of the great names in art history, Goya, Picasso and Dalí, were distinguished Spanish illustrators and engravers who prompted the development of this artistic discipline making it one of the essential foundations of fine arts. The importance of illustrations also increased in Spain throughout 19th and 20th centuries, with magazines such as El Museo Universal (1857 and 1869) and Blanco y Negro (1891-2005), a weekly illustrated publication that included articles about everyday life and customs, literature, and culture by some of the greatest names of the 19th century. Blanco y Negro came into being during the period that was characterized by the triumph of magazines like the French La Revue Blanche, which contained illustrations by Toulouse-Lautrec, or prestigious publications such as L’Illustration and Le Monde Illustré. Spanish illustrators continued to sign the headings of international magazines throughout the 20th century, but it was not until the 1990s that they achieved worldwide fame that has followed them ever since. Mariscal and his work for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Max and his legendary cover for The New Yorker magazine, Ana Juan and her numerous collaborations in The New Yorker, and Jordi Labanda and his works for Wallpaper, Vogue USA, and The New York Times Sunday Magazine, have been central figures in the world of illustration in the last thirty years.

A NEW GENERATION During the 2000s decade, a series of illustrators emerge in Spain and begin their major international expansion, which is supported by the Internet and social networks, thereby becoming a group of artists in highest demand by publishers all over the world. The illustrator Gabriel Moreno (Baena, Córdoba, 1973) is currently one of the most well-known names in the industry of illustration. His works have been published in magazines such as Wall Street Journal, Sunday Times, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Esquire (UK), GQ (USA), El País Semanal (Spain). With a style that he defines as a combination of “powerful lines, expressiveness, sensuality, and a revival of traditional techniques,” female figures in his illustrations exhibit latent eroticism and a loose stroke that made him world famous. Another illustrator with a similar style is Ricardo Cavolo (Salamanca, 1982), a unique artist who rose to stardom when Cirque du Soleil chose him to redesign the poster for one of their performances.

“Collage, cutting, and pasting,” this is how the illustrator Sean Mackaoui (Lausanne, Switzerland, 1969), established in Spain, defines his creative style. As one of the most famous collage artists in Europe, he publishes his works in the papers and magazines such as El Mundo, Courrier Internacional, The Sunday Times magazine, Esquire, GQ , Rolling Stone, Cinemanía, Marie Claire, Financial Times, The International Herald Tribune, and El País. His cutting and pasting technique has enabled him to show his work in galleries in Mexico, Italy, Argentina, and France. But if there is another figure of Spanish illustration in high demand in the United States, it is José Luis Merino (Barcelona, 1962). Los Angeles Times Magazine, The Washington Magazine, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Sunday Telegraph, Harper’s Bazaar (USA), Madame Figaro Japan, La Vanguardia (Spain), and GQ (UK) are some of the publications that have requested his works. He has also received awards from institutions such as The AOI, American Illustration, and The Art Directors Club of Europe. His style is optimistic, coloristic and symbolic, which is a distinguishing mark of many Spanish artists. Other featured illustrators such as David Despau, Iván Solbes, Carla Fuentes, Paula Bonet, Conrad Roset, Sonia Pulido, Raúl Allen, Santiago

Morilla, Luis Úrculo, Silvia Prada, and Raúl Arias (who has received thirty-six awards from the Society of Newspaper Design and nine from the Society of Publication Designers in the past fifteen years) have connections with the United States press and the international illustration market. This is also the case of Paco Roca (Valencia, 1969), whose animated film Wrinkles (2009), received two Goya Awards and was released in the United States dubbed by Martin Sean.

The art of illustration in Spain is going through its best moment in history. Collective exhibitions such as Spanish Illustrators. The Color of Optimism that has toured cities like Rome, Frankfurt, and Berlin, demonstrate a growing interest in both: Spanish culture and the art of illustration. The emergence of art galleries that specialize in illustration and sell their exhibits to the collectors in the United States, such as Gunter Gallery (www.guntergallery.com), confirm the great demand for this unique group of Spanish artists who have managed to revitalize Spanish illustration with a simple brush stroke or pencil mark. These are the powers of paper, imagination, and optimism united in watercolor.

Originality, creativity, professionalism, diversity, rupture, brilliance... are some of the words that define this generation of young artists emerged in the 2000’s and who have managed to make their work public with the help of the Internet. In highest demand by publishers all over the world, they have contributed to the boom of Spanish illustration, which is nowadays considered not only an industry but also a contemporary creative trend.

Art curator and journalist Mario Suárez has selected 28 renowned illustrators such as Paula Bonet, Paco Roca, Gabriel Moreno or Ricardo Cavolo among others. The exhibit is a compendium of colorful, fresh and striking ideas, and a visual feast.

With over 400 works included, Graphic Masters: Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Picasso, Matisse, R. Crumb is the Seattle Art Museum’s first large-scale exhibition devoted to the graphic arts.

Albrecht Dürer, Francisco Goya, and Pablo Picasso are among the artists who considered printmaking a primary form of expression and experimentation. Dürer’s ambitious Large Woodcut Passion (1497/1510) was one of the first projects to emancipate printmaking from book production and create a market for a new level of collector. Goya’s renowned Caprichos (1799) combined word and image to satirize injustices and corruption in 18th-century Spanish society. In the Vollard Suite (1930–37), Picasso exploited the versatility of the etching medium to create extensive variations on the theme of artist and model.

CCEMiami and NAEMI (National Art Exhibitions of the Mentally III Inc.) present the exhibition: Delirious Galveston, Madrid, Havana, featuring art pieces by artists Candice Avery, Ramon Losa and Daldo, the toy maker.

Ramon Losa was born in the Spanish town of Albacete (1959). His drawings always include texts that reinforce the meaning of the composition, like in his representation of hell or the drawings of the man who does not feel like a man, the sick person who does not feel sick, the artist who does not feel like an artist.

Drawn from one of the oldest and most significant private collections in Europe, Treasures from the House of Alba: 500 Years of Art and Collecting features works by Goya, Murillo, Rubens, Titian, and more from the splendid palaces of the Alba dynasty in Spain. One of the world’s foremost living sculptors, Spanish artist Jaume Plensa (b. 1955) has created large-scale artworks related to the human figure for public places around the globe. This exhibition, the artist’s largest to date in the United States, features numerous indoor as well as outdoor installations, engaging viewers even before they enter the Museum. Interested not only in the visual arts but also in literature, psychology, biology, language, and history, Jaume Plensa creates sculptures and installations that unify individuals through connections of spirituality, the body, and collective memory. He uses a wide range of materials—including steel, cast iron, resin, light, sound, and more—to lend physical weight and volume to multiple components of the human condition and soul.

Sound and language have a challenging relationship. What exactly does it mean to “understand” what we hear? This exhibition is curated by Cuban art historian Gabriela García Azcuy and is part of the CUBAAHORA: the Next Generation initiative, a program supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation. This exhibition, originally featured in CCEMiami, focuses on the new generation of Cuban artists. These artists are favoring fresh aesthetics while recognizing historical contexts, whose discourses are more autobiographical than politically contextualized.

The exhibition explores the Spanish legacy found along the Old Spanish Trail combining photography and video. This project started in March 2014 with a road trip across the Southwest of the US, where photojournalist Janire Nájera traced the footsteps of trader Antonio Armijo, who in 1829/30 linked the colonial outposts of New Mexico and California. Nájera interviewed Spanish descendants along the route to explore how the traditions of the first settlers have merged with local cultures influencing the creation and identity of today’s pueblos and cities.

OSS#02 is the fourth a series of interventions in the form of geopolitical gardens where plant species represent social groups and human interaction. The creation of the garden is based upon a series of video interviews in which plants are selected by interviewees and placed according to their real-life physical, political or emotional locations within their community. For several months the installation functions as a community garden hosting workshops. OSS#02 uses Brooklyn and its recent history of immigration as its geopolitical parameters. The outcome of OSS is an informed discussion generated by visitors and participants about local community interactions and coexistence.

Designed by New York–based Nomad Studio, Green Air is the second major, transformational installation in CAM’s courtyard. Consisting of thousands of slices of wood suspended from the courtyard’s canopy with Tillandsia air plants such as Spanish moss attached to each, the undulating sculpture hangs above the heads of visitors, swaying in the breeze and filling the 45-by-50-foot space. Headed by William E. Roberts and Laura Santín, landscape architecture firm Nomad Studio is known for combining contemporary art and design with natural elements. Green Air is the second work in a two-year commission made possible by an Innovation Fund grant by the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission and follows Nomad’s previous installation, Green Varnish (on view in the Museum’s courtyard May–September 2015). The new work re-uses the wood that formed the armature of the original sculpture and re-envisions its curving, wave-like shape.

Apart from contributing to Type Directors Club (TDC) in New York (a leading international forum in graphic design), designer Pepe Gimeno will tour major American cities, including Chicago and Miami, where he will exhibit 20 of his 57 designs that will make up his book, Grafia Callada, a collection of pages composed of various graphic designs made from recycled items which reveal the force of communication through symbols without the need for words.

One of the principal objectives of Pepe is to separate content and form in his art to reveal this new form of representation and communication. His work is a personal one that is placed within the sphere of experimental graphics and art.

Celebrating its 33rd anniversary, Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival is considered the preeminent film festival for showcasing Ibero-American cinema in the U.S. Álex de la Iglesia, one of Spain’s most charismatic and dynamic filmmakers, will open the 2016 Miami International Film Festival on March 4, 2016, with his new film Mi Gran Noche, starring Spanish pop icon Raphael, who will appear in person at the screening to officially inaugurate this year’s Festival. From Doodles to Pixels Over a Hundred Years of Spanish Animation

From Doodles to Pixels is a response to the desire to showcase a little known history —that of Spanish animation cinema. Films like Chico & Rita (Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba y Tono Errando, 2010), Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones (Enrique Gato, 2012) or Pos Eso (Sam, 2014) have put Spanish animation on the international map, but these examples are just the tip of the iceberg of the talent and years of hard work involved in creating art and industry. This series is the result of research, revision and recovery of historical material in dialogue with more recent works. From Doodles to Pixels is a coproduction of the CCCB and AC/E that brings together a selection of films animated using diverse techniques ranging from the early twentieth century to the present day. It features recurring themes such as links with the world of comic books, reflections of political concerns and dialogue with the visual arts.

CERVANTES IN ENGLISH

Throughout many years, as it happens until six months ago, I believed that what Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges used to say, “I like Don Quixote in English more than in Spanish Castilian,” was just one of his “boutades” or wisecracks. Nonetheless, one ultimately realized that the first Quixote that Borges read at the age of nine or ten was precisely translated into English, the language that was spoken in his home and was taught to him by the nurse who was in charge of his first words. When years later Borges faced the original Quixote, he noticed that 17th Century Castilian was a language that he did not speak nor did he completely understand when he encountered it in the written form.

One of the figures that influenced Borges the most was Spanish philosopher and writer Unamuno (one always thought that Unamuno wrote some of the best poems by Quevedo, and Borges some of the best of Unamuno). Unamuno wrote memorable pages about Don Quixote and Cervantes, in particular, in one of his essays published at the same time of his Life of Don Quixote and Sancho, 1905 and titled “On the Reading and Interpretation of Don Quixote,” we find the following lines that could have been written today: “Never could I consider that Don Quixote was untranslatable; even more: I believe that it improves with translation, and as it is better received outside of Spain than inside, it must be because the language concern hasn’t been able to dull its beauty.”

Unamuno’s statement on translation was one of the reasons for which I decided, fourteen years ago, to translate Don Quixote to modern Castilian. However I am not sure that Unamuno was right about the other statements: was Quixote better understood outside of Spain than in Spain, as he affirms and many others do as well?

I don’t think so. I haven’t read yet an interpretation that compares to those by Ortega, Azorín, Azaña or the same Unamuno. Not even is it possible to agree with him when he affirms that the bigger constraint to understand Don Quixote was his author. Not only because Cervantes did not fully understand, according to Unamuno, who Don Quixote was, but mostly for having given rise to the crowd of cervantists who have distracted the readers from the main question. Unamuno even said that the talent of Cervantes, not considering Don Quixote, was mainly medium talent, and that he would have never attained his current recognition, not even that of other of his contemporary writers, if we would have judged him only by his Exemplary Novels, La Galatea, Persiles or Journey to Parnassus. In my opinion, Unamuno also errs in saying so, aside from being a type of theoretical and useless disquisition to resolve whether Cervantes is in one of his books or not, and whether Cervantes wrote it more to the benefit of his character or his own. Let’s say that as important as Don Quixote is the author’s look, which, after centuries, we have called and accepted as “cervantist”.

The first and foremost cervantist of all is Cervantes’ own life about which we know very little. There is nothing more cervantist than the mystery of reality, and we find Cervantes’ life mysterious, though, in brief, we could say that his life was above all a wretched one. He lived his life as the first Cervantist, and as such he did not interpret things literally. “However much life mistreats me, I will never give false testimony against it”, Cervantes could have said with Nietzsche. Cervantist is precisely his look at things and people, mostly at those that were most hit and damaged: smiling, cheerful, melancholic, somewhat ironic but without malice and malicious will, what we will call today an empathic, friendly, and intimate look. And cervantist is the place that Cervantes takes, always a step back, leaving others to do the talking (the supreme example was, undoubtedly, the uninterrupted colloquium among his characters, whether Don Quixote and Sancho, or dogs Cipión and Berganza), confirming two well-known quotes that one constantly repeats. The first included in one of his short novels The Generous Lover: “What is deeply felt is well expressed”, and the second is one of Juan Ramon Jiménez’s aphorisms: “Whomever writes as it is spoken will thrive and be much more recognized than whomever writes as it is written”. The most difficult, but yet the simplest task, is to know how to feel, and write as one speaks, and speak as one feels. There is no more secret to life nor literature.

Quijotes por el mundo shows the rich holdings of the Instituto Cervantes’s network of libraries and, at the same time, pays tribute to the hundreds of translators of Cervantes’s work who, over a period of 400 years, have made it possible to disseminate Cervantes and his texts worldwide. Don Quixote, as is often repeated, is the most widely translated work after the Bible.

The adventures it tells and the ‘Quixotesque’ values contained within continue to be translated to this day. What new translations will be completed as this exhibition opens? Only time will tell. Now is the time to enjoy and be amazed at the richness and the linguistic variety of Don Quixote throughout its 400 years of history and success.

That book, Don Quixote, went on to sell more copies than any other beside the Bible, making its author, Miguel de Cervantes, the single most-read author in history. Cervantes did more than just publish a bestseller, though: He created a new way of writing.

The Nobel Prize in literature in 2010 was awarded to Peruvian-Spanish author Mario Vargas Llosa for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat. During his long career, Vargas Llosa has written more than a dozen novels and many other books and stories. For decades, he has been a voice for Latin American literature. His numerous awards include the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the most important award in Latin American literature, given to authors whose work has contributed to enrich, in a notable way, the literary patrimony of the Spanish language.

The Library of Congress will host a half-day simposium followed by a Living Legend Award ceremony and presentation featuring Mario Vargas Llosa in conversation with Marie Arana.

Among her peers, both violinists and others, she is widely known as one of the most intense, focused artists of her generation. She is also one of the most adventurous, as proven by her multi-year, Grammy-winning commissioning project In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores. Over the course of two seasons, she will premiere a set of new works by Spanish composer Antón García Abril, inspired by his participation in the Encores project and commissioned by Washington Performing Arts.

The International Spanish Music Festival will present a diversity of lesser-heard music of Spain and Latin America to portray the variety and richness of their cultures and traditions and to broaden the awareness of Spanish music. The repertoire includes a variety of classical and traditional music, including elements of Sephardic, Spanish, Argentinian, and Peruvian music, and will cover different musical periods (from Early Music in Spain to the 20th Century in Argentina).

Each concert will begin with an introduction by the musicians, who will explain the background and cultural significance of the music being presented so that the audience can gain deeper appreciation. A reception at each performance will give audience members the opportunity to meet and ask questions to the musicians.

Granados spent the final months of his life in New York. His visit to the United States included some of the most important artistic triumphs of his life—the World Premiere of his opera, Goyescas at the Metropolitan Opera, solo and chamber music recitals with cellist Pau (Pablo) Casals, recordings for the Duo-Art Reproducing Piano, the premiere of his symphonic poem, Dante, by the Chicago Symphony, and a recital at the White House.

The Siglo de Oro Drama Festival has been held at Chamizal National Monument since 1975. Theatrical production companies and other groups that produce Siglo de Oro plays are brought to El Paso by the Chamizal National Memorial for the five-day festival. A different play is presented each night. Some productions are also showcased in Ciudad Juárez. The festival includes Mujeres y Criados (Lope de Vega), Entremeses Cervantinos (Miguel de Cervantes), La Celestina (Fernando de Rojas), and El Principe Ynocente (Lope de Vega). Mujeres y Criados is a comedy about two sisters in love with men in service and without status while courted by rich men of status. The U.S. premiere of Mujeres y Criados will be directed by Rodrigo Arribas Fontela and Laurence Boswell and performed by Fundación Siglo de Oro, Spain.
