Spaikon Square  “Spaikon”, origin of “spoking”, or the spokes of a wheel, is a fitting title for this square. Multiple rounds of spokes build the wheel, which is then shaped into a square.  

Skill: Beginner/Intermediate US Terms  Materials: A small amount of worsted weight yarn in 1 or various different colors H hook (5.00 mm) Yarn needle for weaving in ends.  Gauge: Final square measures approximately 8.5” across.   Stitches: Slip Stitch (sl st) Chain (ch) Single Crochet (sc) Half Double Crochet (hdc) Double Crochet (dc) Half Treble Crochet (htr) Treble Crochet (tr) 

 Notes: <> indicates stitches made into a single stitch to form a corner space, or into an already defined corner ch space.  

Color change options for colorful version shown are listed as c1, c2, c3, and c4 at the beginning of each round.

Spaikon Square 

Round 1: c1. Magic circle. ch 6 (counts as tr + ch 2). Repeat *tr, ch 2* into loop 11 times. Sl st to beginning ch space to join. (12 ch 2 spaces) 

Round 2: c2. Sc into ch space, ch 3 (counts as dc + ch 1). Dc in same ch space, ch 1. *dc, ch 1, dc, ch1* in each ch space around. Sl st to beginning ch space to join. (24 ch 1 spaces)  

Round 3: c3. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch). 2 hdc in each ch 1 space. Sl st to 1st hdc to join. (48) 

Round 4: c4. Working into the 3rd loop only, Repeat *sc x7, 2sc* 6 times around. Sl St to first sc to join. (54)  

Round 5: c2. Sc in same stitch, ch 4 (counts as tr + ch1). Repeat *tr, ch 1* in each stitch around. Sl st to beginning ch space to join. (54 tr) 

Round 6: c1. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch). 1 hdc in each of the first three ch 1 spaces. 2hdc in the next space. Continuing to stitch only into the ch 1 spaces, repeat *hdc, 2hdc* around. Sl st to 1st hdc to join. (80)  

Round 7: c4. Working into the 3rd loop only, Repeat *sc x9, 2sc* 8 times around. Sl St to first sc to join. (88) 

Round 8: c3. Sc, ch 1 (counts as hdc). Dc, htr, <tr ch 4 tr> into a single stitch to form the corner space, htr, dc, hdc. Sc x15. Repeat *hdc, dc, htr, <tr ch4 tr>, htr, dc, hdc, sc x15* 3 times. Sl st to 1st ch 1 to join.  

Round 9: c2. Sc in same stitch, ch 1 (counts as hdc). Hdc x 3. <dc htr ch 2 htr dc> in corner ch space. Hdc x4, sc x15. Repeat *Hdc x4, <dc htr ch 2 htr dc> in corner, hdc x4, sc x15* 3 times. Sl st to 1st ch 1 to join. Finish off.
