A Message from the SpaceTEC® PI...

Greetings Colleagues,

It has been many months since the last issue ofSpaceTEC Talk. Even though you haven't heard from uslately, we haven't been idle. Opportunities continue toemerge in the industrial sectors we support, and we'vedone our best to focus our resources where they offerthe best value to our constituents. It's been a dynamicyear and we're seeing progress across the countrybringing new programs and initiatives online. Offeringpathways to good paying jobs, and ultimately toacademic success for those technicians interested incareers in aerospace is what we're about.

First and foremost, the interest in performance­basedcertifications continues to grow. More colleges areadopting certifications as added value for their students,and those who opt for non­traditional and distancelearning find third­party certifications provide a measureof credibility for their achievements.

Our military partners remain committed to providingservice members the opportunity to earn industrycredentials, VetTEC provides Veterans information andresources to translate their military skills to civiliancareers, and Schools­to­Space continues to offer STEMresources for educators and students in grades 7­12 topromote and excite them about all things aerospace.

We're excited momentum is building and appreciate thecontinued support from our many partners. The staffhere at SpaceTEC HQ is working hard to ensure

44th Space Congress

"The Journey: FurtherExploration for UniversalOpportunities". This was thetheme for this year's 44thSpace Congress.SpaceTEC® was proud to bea platinum sponsor at theannual event which was heldat the Radisson in CapeCanaveral, Florida. Theprogram opened with anaddress from KSC Director

Bob Cabana, a former space shuttle commander andpilot. The evening banquet was headlined by BuzzAldrin, the second man on the moon, who discussed hisconcepts for how to ferry cargo and crews to Mars.This year’s congress was hosted by the CanaveralCouncil of Technical Societies in partnership with NASAKennedy Space Center, Space Florida, and theEconomic Development Commission of Florida's SpaceCoast. SpaceTEC® set up an exhibit booth and tookadvantage of the many networking opportunities thatwere available.

AMC CompetitionSpaceTEC® continued itsannual tradition of sponsoringan event at this year'sAerospace MaintenanceCompetition held in Dallas,TX, April 4th­7th. Due to itspopularity at last year'scompetition, we chose to useour remote hazardous fuelloading event and require thecontestants to dress inprotective (Splash) gear to

simulate actual launch preparation activities.In addition to sponsoring an event, SpaceTEC® alsosponsored a team from Eastern Florida State College. We were very proud of our own intern, Michael

We were very proud of our own intern, MichaelMcKinney, who served as one of the SpaceTEC® eventjudges. In all, 52 teams from transportation industrycompanies, colleges and training academies, competedin timed 15 minute events.

Life Support for a Marshmallow Astronaut? Eastern Florida State College Aerospace TechnologyStudents had their technology package sent to the "edgeof space" on May 1st, 2016. Under the guidance of theirinstructor, Gregory N. Cecil M.A.S., and working with JPAerospace, the students successfully had their projectlaunched by high altitude balloon to an altitude of100,000 feet/20 miles. NASA/KSC Field TripThird grade students fromOak Park Elementary schoolin Titusville, FL took a fieldtrip to the NASA ExplorationStation at Kennedy SpaceCenter on 5/5/2016. Whilethere, the 112 students

participated in a science lab and other hands­onactivities. All of the activities were academic based andthe students had a fantastic opportunity to do spacethemed activities. At the end of the science lab they alsohad the special privilege of touring parts of the KSCVisitors Center. The field trip was sponsored in part bySpaceTEC® as part of our Schools­to­Space program.

EASA Testing SpaceTEC®, through it's CertTEC® division is engagedin a proposal to supply global testing services to theEuropean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Theproposal, created by Avionics partner Aircraft TechnicalBooks, seeks to centralize the EASA B1.1 and B2licensing programs with a core question bank accessible24/7 by any EASA­accredited training schools world­wide.

SpaceTEC Radio InterviewOur very own Greg Cecil, Schools­to­Space OutreachCoordinator, recently did an interview on WMEL BoldTalk Business Radio. Major Changes/Developments of Interest

VetTEC® Initiative VetTEC® is a free resource created to assist active duty andtransitioning service­members and veterans interested intranslating their technical skills from military occupationalspecialties into civilian jobs by gaining industry­recognizedSpaceTEC® and CertTEC® credentials desired in the fieldsof aviation, aerospace, and technology. VetTEC® hascompiled many of the resources provided by severalagencies, including Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense,and Department of Labor, to provide a one­stop, user­friendly

SpaceTEC® Apprentice Technician CertificateSpaceTEC® sponsored a Design a Curriculum (DACUM) held at St. Augustine HighSchool last November. This new certification is being developed because there ispresently no aerospace industry certification for non­college bound students. Inaddition, credentials are excellent resume boosters and often translate to collegecredits. This certification will maintain the same rigor and competencies as theSpaceTEC® Certified Aerospace Technician® certification, but it will be geared towardsthe secondary learner.

CertTEC® Avionics Certification Update CertTEC® has partnered with NIDA Corporation, a leading supplier ofstudent electronics training equipment including online training contentand Aircraft Technical Book Co. who publishes complete sets of FAA Part147, FCC, and EASA B1.1 and B2 training publications supporting aviationtraining programs worldwide, to develop the CertTEC Avionicscertification. As the only performance­based Avionics credential on the

horizon available worldwide to validate the knowledge and skills of technicians whotroubleshoot, repair, modify and maintain avionics systems, much interest was seen.Aligned with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) B2 standard, the onlystandard addressing Avionics technician performance­based training and licensing in theworld today, work continues developing question banks and a practical examinationprocess. Release is currently set for late summer 2016. In conjunction with CertTEC®

Avionics, SpaceTEC® Partners Inc. has joined forces with Aircraft Technical Book Co. indeveloping question banks for the delivery of EASA B1.1 and B2 licensing exam.

Certified TechniciansCertTEC® has certified over 670 technicians year­to­date! Here is the breakdown bycertification: Basic Electricity and Electronics 530; Aviation Structures 63; AviationMechanical Assembly 18, and Basic Composites 9.

Credential Testing ServicesCredential Testing Services (CTS) is a division of SpaceTECPartners, Incorporated. CTS is a computer­based examinationadministration service for a variety of professional credentials. It is powered by Questionmark, SPI’s cloud­based, scalableassessment management system. CTS is working with 180Skills, Indianapolis, IN, to deliver certifications to those studentsthat are successful in the 180 Skills Maker Career programs.

Partner Updates

SpaceTEC® Professional Development OpportunitySpaceTEC® Partner College Professional Development Opportunity Surveys wererecently sent out for interested partner college instructors and staff to request fundingfor professional development opportunities to build additional capability for instruction inSTEM programs. The match­funded program requests which are submitted arereviewed by a team of SpaceTEC® staff and partner college educators. Once requestsare approved, match­funding is negotiated with the instructor's partner institution. To­date, two programs have been approved and funded through the program.

Virginia Tech Professional Development Opportunity

SpaceTEC® provided support to the Virginia Space Grant Authority in their proposal toNSF for their Geospatial Technician Education ­ Unmanned Aircraft Systems program. If you aspire to plan and fly UAS missions as well as analyze geospatial data, then agreat opportunity has just opened up for you. The (GeoTED­UAS) project has just beenfunded by the National Science Foundation. This program provides a stipend tointerested full­time community college faculty. Annual SpaceTEC NVC MeetingOur 2016 National Visiting Committee Meeting will be held on November 9th and 10th.The venue will be the Reed Conference Center at the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel(OKC), OK. M­STEMFor the third year, SpaceTEC is sponsoring sessions and providing information aboutindustry certifications at the Materials in STEM (M­STEM) workshop. The event bringstogether students, faculty and business to strengthen understanding of Science,Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) principles, especially relating to materialsscience, and to enhance K­20 technology education integration. A unique feature ofMSTEM is hands­on, interactive learning which presents information in a way thatengages students and teachers. M­STEM is being held at Tulsa Technology Center’sOwasso Campus, November 6­8, 2016. To learn more about this event click here.

Northland UAS DACUMNorthland Community and Technical College played hostto 10 industry and education professionals for a SpaceTEC®sponsored Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Maintainer DACUMin June. Their goal was to design a curriculum for the first third­

party, accredited UAS Maintainer Certification. This would complement the school's existingFAA A&P and small UAS (sUAS) programs.

Intern Updates

Community Service Learning Program ContinuesSpaceTEC® continues to participate in an intern program with students from EasternFlorida State College. This past semester Michael McKinney and Ryan McHerg participated in the program. They are students in the EFSC Aerospace program. Theinterns volunteer 3­4 hours per week and get credit through the VoluntaryCommunity Service Program at the college. Activities involved building a fluid transferdemonstration, inventorying equipment, vacuum bagging basics, composites machining,drilling, and repair to create test specimens. In addition to classroom skills in compositesfabrication, upon completion of the semester, interns were evaluated by SpaceTEC®staff for core skills such as promptness, timekeeping procedures, and shop etiquette.We appreciate their assistance and hope they have gained some on the job experiencewhich will help them obtain jobs in aerospace in the future.
