Leading the Lasallian journey
UNDER THE LEADERSHIP of the
new Chancellor, Br. Ricky Laguda FSC,
De La Salle University has started Project
Beyond 100, a multi-sectoral initiative
to identify the institution’s thrusts and
strategic targets beyond its centennial.
Br. Ricky says the project is slated to
undergo three phases—the first involving
college assemblies, the second involving
specific groups for identifying specific
core competence areas of the University,
and the third for articulating the specific
action plans of all units.
At the core of the project is the challenge
of developing not only excellence but
also the Lasallian values of faith, service,
and communion. Br. Ricky notes, “While it
is important for students to excel in terms
of academics, it is also equally important
for them to become service-oriented and
lifelong learners.”
Citing the University’s core functions,
he emphasizes the need to define,
for instance, the Lasallian character
in research, starting off with the
identification of research priorities. He
likewise underscores the need to look
into teaching-related concerns, such
as how to develop creativity in terms
of pedagogy, or how to select and
retain the best teachers in DLSU by
providing them a good work-life
balance.
An inspired life
The Lasallian teacher
BR. NARCISO “JUN” ERGUIZA FSC is a graduate of DLSU, where he
earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor
of Science in Education in 1972, his MA
in English Education in 1974, and his
Doctor of Education major in Educational
Management in 1996.
His first administrative position was in
DLSU in 1978, when he became the
head of its English Language Program.
But throughout his years of service as
superintendent of different schools across
the country, he has always remained as
an English teacher.
He remembers his first year of teaching
in the Grade School of the Taft campus.
With the Grade 7 honors class to handle,
he experimented with his teaching.
Just like the way St. La Salle adopted
innovations in classroom teaching, Br.
Jun introduced different activities to his
class, and he thought those seemed to
work as his students learned English very
well. After 38 years, he met a student
from that class. And was he truly proud,
for the boy is now Judge of the Court of
First Instance of the High Court in Hong
Kong–Judge Anselmo Reyes––who has
returned to his alma mater as a member
of the DLSU College of Law Board of
Advisers.

EVEN WHILE still in grade school at
La Salle Green Hills, Br. Ricardo “Ricky”
Laguda FSC, the third DLSU chancellor,
already knew he wanted to be a La Salle
Brother.
Br. Ricky fondly recalls Br. Felix Masson
FSC, who was his grade school principal,
and the simple gestures of the man–
like the warm greetings in their daily
encounters and the small birthday
souvenirs–that kept him inspired by the
vocation.
In later years, Br. Ricky would study
AB Philosophy in Ateneo de Manila
University, then return to the company
of the Christian Brothers at DLSU, where
he took a Teacher’s Certificate Program
in 1995, his MA Religious Education in
2000, and his PhD Executive Program
in Educational Leadership and
Management in 2007. His thesis and
dissertation both received an outstanding
award, and he graduated with high
distinction for both his graduate degrees.
For Br. Ricky, his being surrounded by
outstanding mentors from among the
Brothers and lay partners has helped
him become an administrator. He has a
long list of people whose examples have
influenced him in his work as Brother,
teacher, and administrator.
At the same time, he also acknowledges
that many of his lessons have also
come from those who are among the
world’s poorest communities in Papua
New Guinea, as well as those local folk
who live in the remote areas of Bagac,
Bataan. “Teaching different tribes, living
with them, teach you tolerance for other
culture,” he says.
Looking beyond 100
“THE THINGS THAT WE EXCEL IN ARE THE SAME THINGS THAT STOP US FROM MOVING FORWARD,” Br. Narciso “Jun” Erguiza FSC, the
new De La Salle University President,
says. Br. Jun offers the word of caution,
lest the University be complacent for
taking pride of its present achievements.
He stresses the importance of a
regular and honest assessment of the
University’s performance to constantly
achieve bigger and better things.
“We can’t be contented with what
people think of DLSU, and what we
think of ourselves–we need to keep
improving,” he adds.
Br. Jun, whose administrative
experience of over 30 years
includes heading other De La Salle
Philippines member units and assisting
La Salle-supervised schools, sees himself
more as a manager than a leader. He makes
sure that a school is run very well, in the old
tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle.
Since the announcement of his appointment
to his new post, he has been making the
rounds to meet with the various sectors of
the community. He says he gets into the
lives of the students, faculty, staff, and co-
administrators by always prioritizing their
needs to ensure that a school runs smoothly.
As DLSU looks forward to its centennial next
year, Br. Jun points out that the journey ahead
should be both a time for celebration and a
time for evaluation. “By doing so, we can then
look forward to the next 100 years of this fine
academic institution,” he adds.
Committee Chairman Br. Edmundo
Fernandez FSC.
Both Brothers are scheduled to be
invested and installed in their new
positions on September 14, during the
feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, at
the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Representatives of the different sectors
of the University will join the offertory
in the Eucharistic celebration to be
held before the formal investiture. Part
of the processional to welcome the
new University heads will be members
of the Board of Trustees, past DLSU
presidents and chancellors, DLSU
administrators, and University Fellows.
Br. Jun started teaching English and Religion classes at La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) High School. (In later years, he would also teach in schools such as St. Joseph’s High School in Bacolod City, DLS Lipa, DLS Grade School in Manila, and La Consolacion College in Bacolod City.)
As director of DLS Brothers’ Scholasticate, Br. Jun focused on training and forming young men to become DLS Brothers.
Br. Jun became principal of LS High School in Bacolod City
Br. Jun began supervising various schools, includ-ing DLS-John Bosco College in Bislig, Surigao del Sur, LIDE Learning Center in Isabel, Leyte, and Andres Soriano Jr. Memorial Schools in Aroroy, Masbate and Toledo City, Cebu. (Since then, he has assisted at least 14 schools.)
