Grants vs Scholarships

• Grants and scholarships are free money that doesn’t have to be repaid

• Grants are often need-based• Scholarships are usually merit-based. • Can come from a variety of places

– Federal Government– State Government– College or Career school– A private or nonprofit organization

• Grants may have to be repaid if student withdraws from school before finishing a semester.

• Federal Grants– Usually awarded only to undergraduate students.– The amount of aid received depends on financial need, the cost of

attendance at the school, full-time or part-time student, and more– Max amount for 2014-2015 is $5,730

• Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant s– A grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need– Given to students by the financial aid office at each participating schools– Campus-based aid so not all schools participate– Can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year

• Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants– May qualify if a parent or guardian died as a result of

military service in Iraq or Afghanistan – Were not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant based income– Max same as Pell Grant $5,730.
