Welcome to SKILLS2015
A new toilet is needed every one and a half seconds! Some 111 million toilets are needed by 2019 to reach the goal of a Clean India (Swachh Bharat) set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Even if this goal is achieved, it will not be enough. Clearly as challenging is the cultural change needed to ensure that the Indian population makes effective use of these new sanitation facilities. There is no magic solution to achieving the necessary training and cultural change simultaneously across the huge country.
LSLS conferences are dedicated to achieving the life and livelihood skills necessary for sustainable economic growth for rural India. SKILLS2015, the third such conference, organized jointly by Rural Economic and Educational Development Society [REEDS] and Life Skills and Livelihood Skills International [LSLSI], is dedicated to the training agenda necessary to make the Clean India a success.
Skills 2015, to be held in Hyderabad, India, is timed to coincide with the UN’s World Toilet Day, November 19 - 20.
As Chair of Skills 2015, it is my pleasure to invite you to take part and support the conference. Your presence and insights will help ignite the revolution of Swachh Bharat.
With warm regards,
Dr. Richard W Oliver

About SKILLS2015
In India, about 600 Million persons in rural areas defecate in the open; and as many as 70 per cent rural households are without access to toilets. According to World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program estimates, this is costing the country very dearly, with an estimated 6 percent of India’s GDP, or some Rs. 336,000crores (US$ 53.4 billion)wasted annually due to lost productivity and health care costs consequent to poor sanitation.
Visualizing a nation in which the traditional habit of open defeca-tion is entirely eliminated and quality of life is improved, the chal-lenge is enormous. To provide impetus to the ongoing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India) Campaign, REEDS and LSLSI along with government agencies, national and international affiliates is organiz-ing SKILLS2015 International Conference to address the challenges in building capacities and skills of stakeholders at various levels for achieving and sustaining national sanitation goals.
SKILLS2015 is the third in a series of Life Skills and Livelihood Skills International conferences aimed at developing the skill levels towards sustainable economies and general quality of life, of rural India. The conference draws distinguished participants representing a wide spec-trum of regulatory, academic, industrial and other sectors of life across India and overseas.
SKILLS2015 scheduled to be held on 19-20 November 2015 coincid-ing with World Toilet Day at ni-msme, Hyderabad, India.

Dear Dr. Reddy
Thank you for your letter of 3 October 2015 and kind invitation to attend the SKILLS2015 International Conference: ‘Realizing and sustaining Clean India’ from 19-20 November.
Unfortunately, due to prior commitments, I will be unable to attend this year’s conference. I wish you all the best with the event and look forward to hearing of the positive outcomes that result.
It was a pleasure to see you again during the Business Mission to Hyderabad in 2014 and to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding be-tween REEDS and Charlton Brown. I sincerely hope that this Memorandum has been productive.
I also understand you received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letter from American Sentinel University in June for your efforts in rural development. Please accept my sincere congratulations for this achievement.
Thank you for contacting me. I look forward to working with you and your organization again in the future.
Yours sincerely

Dear Dr Ravi K Reddy
As we celebrate another great idea of REEDS to co-host with LSLSI, the SKILLS2015 event around one of the world’s most important social justice is-sues, sanitation for all, I wish I could have been there to share this event with you. Unfortunately the challenges of leading a University of Technology in the prevailing situation preclude my attendance. However please be assured that the conference as well as the theme bears a strong resonance with us.
21 years after democracy was achieved in South Africa the issue of sanitation and the delivery of water to households remains one of the key challenges of its reconstruction challenges for just and equitable society. This is indeed true for much of the developing world. This has partly to do with the lack of political will and the fact that for many politicians and their families this is not an issue and it has partly to do with the fact that the delivery of sanitation is often left to governments and big companies even though communities at the local level may achieve much. And this is where REEDS comes in – developing skills for local empowerment. I salute your initiatives to make tangible differences in fundamental and basic rights.
On behalf of Durban University of Technology (DUT), its staff and its students, I wish you every success on the 19th and 20th of November 2015 as you gather in Hyderabad around the theme of skills for sanitation.

Shri. Chaitanya DattaBILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION
There is a major gap in skills at every level especially at the final mile delivery of sanitation services and products. The Gates Foundation is appreciative of the efforts made to skill India’s labour and enhancing economic opportunities for them and to bring scale to the government’s mission of Swachh Bharat. It is important that technical skills are upgraded to provide quality services and products in critical sectors such as health, and water and sanitation.
We wish you all the best for a successful Conference and thank you again for the invitation.
Warm regards,

Dear Dr. Reddy,
On behalf of Canada India Foundation, I extend my congratulations and best wishes to the Organizing Committee for a productive and successful SKILLS 2015 conference, taking place on November 19-20, 2015 in Hyderabad, India.
The objective of the SKILLS2015 is not only noble, but in the Indian context highly relevant and essential. The fact that 70% of rural households in India are without access to toilets, leading to not only to greater healthcare costs but also loss of productivity, is a matter of great concern not only to India, but also to the whole world. India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had taken the lead in rectifying this situation with his Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign, and it is up to civil society in India as well as international well-wishers to make this cam-paign successful. Canada India Foundation is proud to be represented at the conference by one of its Directors of the Board, Mr. Vijay SastryKotamarti, who is also a Member of the International Advisory Committee for SKILLS 2015.
I wish the organizers continued success with the follow-up to the conference as well.
Sincerely,

Dr Ravi Reddy and assembled colleagues
Warmest greetings and best wishes for your conference. You are setting high goals for India to achieve sanitation for all through Clean India (Swachh Bharat). This campaign has now attracted international interest by setting the ambitious target of installing 111 million toilets over the next four years. I hope that my mes-sage would be a modest contribution to strengthen the mobilization towards this goal. Social attitudes which reflect the desire for a better life and reject insanitary conditions will be the best stimulus for improved sanitation. Public campaigns, in schools and in the media, to explain the health and economic benefits of using toilets and of better hygiene are the necessary instruments for change. Strong positive attitudes towards sanitation within the rising generation will stimulate adequate provision in public institutions, buildings and house-holds. This insistence on dignity – along with clear planning and the allocation of sufficient resources – will be the driver of improved sanitation. I wish you all the best for your conference which I’m sure will strengthen the determination throughout India to achieve your goal. I will be following your progress with keen interest.
Dr. David Hemson 30 September 2015
Dear Ravi,

I wish you the very best for the conference this year.
Thinking of you.Kind Regards,KAY GANLEY

Session Description:
A critical imperative in meeting India’s global economic challenge is the success of the Clean India program. Support from corporate philanthropy is gaining traction in India for “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” [Clean Indian Mission] after the clarion call by Prime Minister to the biggest ever cleanliness drive in the world. Spending by Indian companies on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activi-ties are estimated to grow further by more than four times to USD 2.5 billion (over Rs. 150 billion) a year with corporate social responsibility made manda-tory from April 2014.
This session is intended to provide an overview into CSR concepts, trends, key drivers and strategies in realizing Clean India Mission; share new thinking, global standards and good practices and real life examples; challenges involved in making CSR investments genuinely impactful in the long run; and identifying approaches for knowledge, skills and training in CSR management.

Session Description:
Needless to emphasize the role of Agricultural extension services play in improv-ing the efficiency of agriculture and thereby socio-economic standards among rural communities. Considering its multi-dimensional diffusion into Indian rural landscapes, there have been strong perceptions on configuring extension services to realize and sustain national sanitation targets especially in bringing about desirable behavioral changes among the rural communities.
Sanitation Extension includes Extension Education, Extension Services and Extension Research keeping in view the behavioral and management concerns. In the context of Indian rural backdrop, extension mechanism would not only be able to enhance the current awareness/motivation processes but strengthen the entire equilibrium up to trial and sustained adoption stage.
This session is intended to reflect on how Agricultural extension services system could be extrapolated on Indian rural sanitation spectrum, provide an overview into practices, and identifying approaches for knowledge and skills in Extension Services and management. This session, therefore focuses on the processes and methods of extension education, need for extension services to be inbuilt into the dynamics of clean India Mission and also the researchable topics in sanitation extension.

Session Description
To achieve Clean India by 2019 means construction of a toilet for 65,000 fami-lies per day or one every 1 1/2 seconds! Bringing improvement in sustainable cleanliness, hygiene and quality of life in rural areas requires both the genera-tion of primary demand and the development of a robust supply chain. Most importantly, however, is a commitment from all levels of the village to change historic cultural traditions regarding sanitation practices.
This session therefore, will focus on current and needed skills for the wide-spread adoption of healthy sanitation practices. The session will share the best training practices, innovation, transfer of knowledge and technologies to build skills and capacities to achieve national sanitation targets. The session will describe appro-priate scalable skill development models and diffusion of healthy practices in an expeditious and equitable manner.
