My heartfelt congratulations to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and all its stakeholders for celebrating this year’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).

Science and technology plays a pivotal role in the fulfillment of our country’s progress. As we continue to contribute significantly to the achievement of this goal, we are pleased to have both the government and non-government institutions among our committed allies in preparing the country meet global challenges. Therefore, please allow me to thank everyone for making this activity a success.

To the DOST family and stakeholders, may this occasion be a meaningful opportunity for us to contribute greatly to sustaining our country to a productive age as we look forward to future generations who will be part of the institutions growth. May we continue to reaffirm our commitment to empowering our citizenry and promoting sustainable development in our country.

May this occasion remind us not only of the longstanding friendships and ties that bind us as individuals, but also of the value of solidarity as we fulfill our duties to the society.

We at the Department of Science and Technology are pleased to welcome the public to the celebration of the 2014 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).

This year’s NSTW activities are bannered by the theme “The Philippines: A Science Nation Meeting Global Challenges” to bring into greater attention the fundamental effects of the forthcoming ASEAN integration in 2015, and the S&T community’s role not only in cushioning its impacts to vulnerable sectors, but also in exploiting the numerous potential opportunities this era of globalization brings.

In this rapidly-changing global environment, we need to harness today’s transformational tools to open new doors that would lead to the achievement of the goals set forth in DOST’s eight major outcomes in agriculture, enterprises, industries, IT-business process management, connectivity, health, education, and disaster preparedness. These efforts shall be vital in pushing the innovation agenda in key result areas of the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan.

I hope you can join the DOST family in observing this dynamic synergy by participating in the events and activities we have organized for the NSTW this year.

I would like to welcome you to the celebration of the 2014 National Science and Technology Week.

This year’s activities are in keeping with the theme, “The Philippines: A Science Nation Meeting Global Challenges.” We at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) hold that as one Nation, the Filipino people must be informed of the S&T sector’s contributions in socioeconomic development and in directing national efforts to the new reality of an integrated ASEAN economy by 2015.

The DOST is committed to partnering with its stakeholders in setting policies and generating solutions so that our key sectors will be able to cope with the possible long-term changes of both regionalization and globalization. The urgency of the times demand that the broader adoption of S&T applications in practically every aspect of our lives shall spell the difference in achieving our development priorities in the years hence. The challenge therefore lies upon us to break free from our comfort zones so we can capture new market opportunities beyond our shores.
