FROM THE HELM STEVE MORRELL, EDITOR

Tired of being stopped, boarded and inspected by the stateand/or local marine police when they have no probablecause to stop you—but just want to inspect your boat? Tiredof being boarded and inspected several times over a shortperiod of time? A new Florida law could end that practice.

In the March issue, I reported on a proposal by FloridaState Representative Ritch Workman who got inspected somany times he introduced a law to stop it. I commented onit that I didn’t think it had much of a chance of passing, butguess what? It will be the law in Florida on July 1.

I reported that the words “if probably cause exists”were proposed to be added to the law that allows lawenforcement to board and inspect boats. Those words werenot put in, but the words “unless there is reasonable suspi-cion that a violation” has occurred were put in and that issufficient enough to end the unwarranted inspections (Ihope).

You must first fulfill a few requirements, though. Yourboat must have been inspected by a law enforcement officer, whereby you receive a decal signifying that you passed. Then the decal must be properly displayed “within 6 inchesof the inspected vessel’s properly displayed vessel registra-tion decal.” If you are a non-motorized vessel that is notrequired to be registered, the decal must be above the water-line on the forward half of the port side of the boat. The lan-guage says inspection by a law enforcement officer, whichmeans the USCG Auxiliary inspection stickers that havebeen around for years do not fulfill the requirement.

As mentioned above, an officer can still stop you if theyhave “reasonable suspicion” that a violation has occurredand the new law includes words reiterating that an officercan still stop “a vessel for any other lawful purpose.” That’sall understandable. For more on the law go to page 17. (Toread the law Google this: Florida bill HB 703).

Keep in mind that the Coast Guard (and any other fed-eral officer) can still stop you under their rules. This newlaw is state law and only affects state (and local) lawenforcement.

The only question I have is how long is the sticker goodfor? A year, two years, three years...?

I am surprised that passage of this law has not beengiven more publicity as it is a major milestone in my opin-ion. Other states have this rule already in effect, and itmakes perfect sense. I have reported on complaints fromother citizens in other states who are also sick and tired ofbeing stopped and inspected many times over.

It was the experience of State Representative Workmanthat instigated this new law, but I have also been reportingcomplaints from Florida boaters about unwarranted inspec-tion boardings for over a decade. It’s too bad that it has got-ten to the point where a state lawmaker has to have had abad experience to get something changed. Someone’s notlistening.

But hurrah for this change and RepresentativeWorkman’s efforts.

Go out and get your decal.

WIND ROSES: Each wind rose shows the strength and direc-tion of the prevailing winds in the area and month. These havebeen recorded over a long period of time. In general, thelengths of the arrows indicate how often the winds came fromthat direction. The longer the arrow, the more often the windscame from that direction. When the arrow is too long to beprinted in a practical manner, a number is indicated.

The number in the center of the circle shows the percentageof the time that the winds were calm. The lengths of thearrows plus the calms number in the center add up to 100percent. The number of feathers on the arrow indicates thestrength of the wind on the Beaufort scale (one feather isForce 1, etc.). Wind Roses are taken from Pilot Charts.

BoatUS Foundation Grassroots Grants:New Policy Allows Year-AroundApplication for Funds for Boating Safety& Clean Boating ProjectsIn February, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety andClean Water made it easier for nonprofit organizationsincluding community-based groups, boat clubs, anglingand environmental organizations, USCG Auxiliary, or USPower Squadrons to apply for a Grassroots Grant. Startedover 25 years ago, the BoatUS member-funded grant pro-gram provides groups up to $10,000 to help educate boaterson safe and clean boating topics. The Foundationannounced a completely new “365-day rolling” grant appli-cation process that allows applicants to apply at any timethroughout the year, speeding the review process andallowing more flexibility in funding projects.

Submitting a short letter of intent explaining their ideais all an applicant needs to do to start the process. If the ideais strong and meets Grassroots Grant program guidelines,BoatUS Foundation will ask for a full proposal. Gone is hav-ing to wait for the once-a-year “cycle” of funding, andgroups will have better ability to apply for funds when theyneed them. Decision-making will also be greatly expedited.

Past projects have ranged from public serviceannouncements on the effects of boating under the influ-ence and installing fishing line recycling bins, to hands-oneducation about the effects of marine debris and a uniqueairborne blimp adorned with boating safety messages.Since 1989, the foundation has awarded more  than $1.3million to organizations that have developed creative proj-ects to promote safe and clean boating on their local water-ways. For more information or how to apply, go toBoatUS.org/grants.

Gunboat Up for Auction — Company Continues to Build BoatsAs Gunboat goes up for auction, the company continues tostay in operation with six boats under construction—a cus-tom Gunboat 78 near completion and five 55-footers underconstruction. The company continues with 60 people.

Although Gunboat founder Peter Johnstone steppeddown and is now serving as the broker for the company, previous COO Barry Correll took over as president as thecompany enters Chapter 11 restructuring. The companywas seeking bidders and the deadline to get bids in wasMarch 29. The company is being auctioned off as a singlelot—in hopes of keeping the company alive.

The slip is one of only three deepwater slips inNantucket and is big enough to handle a boat 156 feet long.It is one of three deepwater slips of similar size and value inthe harbor.

Wendy Schmidt bought a house in Nantucket in 1999and has become involved in the local community. She andher husband have financed oceanographic research andenvironmental projects. She built a fuel-efficient 46-meter(152 feet) ketch, Elfie, and founded 11th Hour Racing, anorganization aimed at protecting the world’s oceans. Thegroup’s aim is to engage sailors and the maritime industryin protecting oceans by sponsoring regattas, sailing teamsand promoting positive environmental practices.

Wendy and Eric purchased a 46-foot wood sloop andsailed it to the Caribbean in 2007. She learned to sail, andlater, her husband gave her a Swan 80, which she helmed—she helms her own boats—in the Heineken Regatta in St.Maarten. They won the race.

She later built Elfie and was closely involved in thedesign and building of the boat.

Mummified Body of Sailor FoundAboard Drifting YachtIn February, Philippine fishermen found a drifting sailboat,a Jeanneau Sun Magic 44 named Sayo, about 40 miles off thecoast of the Philippines. The boat was dismasted and part ofthe cabin underwater. The fishermen found a mummifiedbody of a man sitting at the navigation table—as though hehad died suddenly and unexpectedly, although cause ofdeath has not been officially determined. The man is pre-sumed to be Manfred Fritz Bajorat, a German national whohad not been heard of since 2009. He was identified by

papers found on the boat. The man had written a letter tohis wife Claudia who died from cancer in 2010. TheFishermen righted the boat and towed it to the Philippineswhere the police were inspecting it and the body.

It is believed that dry ocean winds, hot temperaturesand the salty air preserved the body. Another Germanworld sailor said that he met Bajorat in 2009 in Mallorca andstated “He was a very experienced sailor. I don’t believe hewould have sailed into a storm. I believe the mast brokeafter Manfred was already dead.”

For those interested in seeing photos of the boat and themummified body, Google “Manfred Fritz Bajorat” inGoogle images.

Florida Governor Signs Anti-Anchoring LegislationSurprising no one, Florida Governor Rick Scott, passed HB1051, which was the anchoring bill SOUTHWINDS reportedon in the April issue (“Short Tacks” section), that limitsanchoring in certain areas of southeast Florida were water-front property owners complained about boats anchoring inthe public waters near their homes. The Governor signedthe bill on March 25. The law goes into effect on July 1.

Florida Passes Law Limiting LawEnforcement Boat Inspections andAnother on Boat OperationOn March 25, Governor Rick Scot passed Florida bill HB 703which changes the definition of reckless boating from beingdefined as endangering anyone, including those on theboat, to endangering only those not on the boat. The lawalso lessens the ability of law enforcement to inspect boats.Under the law, law enforcement can no longer use the pre-text of conducting safety inspections to stop and searchboats if the boats display proper safety-inspection decals. They can still stop a boat if probably cause exists or reason-able suspicion that violations have occurred. The safetysticker must be properly displayed on the boat to qualify.Florida has had a volunteer safety inspection sticker formany years.

The two provisions were a result of StateRepresentative Rick Workman’s efforts after he wasstopped on his boat several times over the course of a yearfor safety inspections and he got tired of it. He was alsowarned of boating recklessly when he was idling and hischildren were sitting on the bow with their feet danglingover the edge, the officer telling him that was reckless boatoperation. He pushed to change the definition of reckless tonot include endangering those on board the boat.

The law also included a discount of 12 percent on aboat’s annual registration cost, if a boater shows that theyhave purchased an emergency locator device. The 12 per-cent discount will be offered for one year after the law goesinto effect. The original Senate bill had a 25 percent, perma-nent discount in it, but the House would not fund that

amount, nor include the discount for more than one year. The Senate will have to vote next year to continue it if theychoose to do so. This provision was put in the law as aresult of efforts by the families of two young boaters whowere lost off the coast of Jupiter, FL, in July 2015.Emergency locator devices would almost certainly havelocated the boys and saved them.

The bill becomes law on July 1.

My Catalina 30, Rhombus, and I were homeward boundafter a two-month trip that included the NorthernAbaco Islands. I had dropped off my crew, friend

Trevor Rhody, when we landed at Cape Canaveral, after anuneventful overnight Gulf Stream crossing. Loping alongand not covering too many miles in a day, I picked up anoth-er crew for the final days until returning to home port at theMarina at Ortega Landing in Jacksonville, FL: grandsonGrant Kruse, 16, an old Rhombus hand and welcomed help. Ipicked out a couple of “teen friendly” stops to make sure thatthe “crew” was suitably entertained.

Between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, at AICWmilepost (MP) 797, sits a tiny town, but a big place to visitthat has become a personal ICW favorite. It’s the polaropposite of glint and glitter. There are no stores, only onegood restaurant and watering hole nearby, not even a stop-light if you travel through the area by car: Marineland, withan after-work population five, is a delightful place withplenty to do: walk on an almost empty beach, swim withdolphins, hike or kayak in the Guana Tolomato MatanzasNational Research Reserve, or visit the University ofFlorida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience. Theonly nightlife is watching for fireflies, but if visitingWhitney’s Sea Turtle Hospital or taking in a UF lecture—like “Sex in the Soil”—sounds like fun, this is a place foryou. If you are really lucky, you’ll catch an occasional re-runof Tarzan (1938) or The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954),both filmed on location at Marineland.

My daughter Monica and son-in-law Matt droppedGrant off in Daytona Beach at the Halifax Harbor Marina, also a teen-friendly place with its famed beach and board-walk. We enjoyed the day at the beach and on the DaytonaBeach Pier, returning to the boat in time to grill a couple ofhamburgers and get ready for the morning’s departure. With only 32 miles to travel the next day, we slept a bit late

waiting for Daytona’s restricted bridge opening period toend. A favorable Halifax River current had us nearing ourMarineland destination by early afternoon. With room foronly about 25 boats, we had made a reservation withMarina Assistant Dockmaster Eric Ziecheck. MarinelandMarina saves a number of slips for transients and also has along floating dock for boats large, wide and small. However, as the marina’s popularity as an ICW stopovergrows, it’s a good idea to call ahead and reserve a spot.Scheduled for the marina’s floating dock on this trip, we

were soon tied up with my grandson handling the post-docking chores.

As soon as we were settled, our first activity was visit-ing Marineland Dolphin Adventure. Conceived by a smallgroup of investors that included Cornelius VanderbiltWhitney, Douglas Burden, and Count Ilya Tolstoy, grand-son of the famous writer, Marine Studios opened its doorsin 1938 as a resounding 30,000 hopeful tourists cloggedHighway A1A south of St. Augustine. Later renamedMarineland of Florida, it was billed as the world’s first ocea-

narium and made the real life undersea drama accessible toall for viewing, study and filming. It was a place where allmarine life—fish, sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins—livedtogether as they would in the wild. The attraction thrivedfor decades, thrilling tourists with trained dolphin shows, small whales, and other creatures from the deep.Marineland provided aquatic shows for the public as wellas facilities for the study of marine life by scientists, greatlyincreasing the world’s knowledge of marine animals, theirhabits and behavior. As a high school freshman fromMichigan, I visited Marineland just a few years after thefamous scaly fellow climbed out of a nearby dark lagoon, ter-

rorizing moviegoers.Believing that peoplewere more likely toengage in conserva-tion behavior if theycould touch and carefor a live animal, thevenue reopened in 2006 after a major reconstruction with avariety of interactive programs designed to create a person-al connection between visitors and the majestic dolphins.Today, Marineland Dolphin Adventure is operated by theGeorgia Aquarium, a non-profit dedicated to aquatic ani-

The educational focus of the theme park fits in well withthe rest of the community, as the entire town is cemented inmarine science and education. Founded in 1974, the WhitneyLaboratory for Marine Bioscience grew from a collaborationbetween Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and Dr. Sam Gurin, aprofessor of Biochemistry at the University of Florida. TheWhitney Laboratory is a cutting edge biomedical andbiotechnology research center with a focus on the problemsof human health, natural resources and the environment, thetraining of future scientists, and contributing to public edu-cation and science policy. Whitney researchers use marineanimals, which don’t get the same illnesses as humans, tostudy human health. The study of the acute smell capabilityof lobsters to learn about human stroke susceptibility, use ofjelly fish-like organisms as models of human embryo devel-opment, using transparent juvenile zebra fish and green flu-orescent protein to study genetic activity, and the amazingcapability of segmented worms to regenerate themselveswith implications for the growth of human tissues, are only afew examples of research areas. Other areas of study includeEverglades restoration science and artificial oyster reef

replacement. On the education front, Whitney’s “ResearchExperience for Undergraduates” program has been trainingfuture scientists for thirty years. Active in community out-reach, Whitney’s Center for Marine Studies “Scientist for aDay Program” provides weekly science experience and edu-cation to K-12 school groups and has several lifelong learningprograms, including an evening lecture series for adults. Therecently opened Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Laboratoryprovides a northeast Florida care center and is dedicated tosea turtle rehabilitation, research, and education.

Marineland is situated in the Guana TolomatoMatanzas (GTM) National Research Reserve, over 60,000acres of ocean, beaches, salt and freshwater marsh, man-grove estuary, marine hammock, and pine flat-woods. Thebest way to enjoy the GTM Reserve is to go out into it.Ripple Effect EcoTours and Adventure Outfitters is locatedat the marina and offers kayak rental, and both kayak andjet boat tours aboard the vegetable-oil-powered Ripple Effect1. Both tours explore the biologically rich Jordan and MellonIsland sites that are part of Faver-Dykes State Park, thePrincess Place Preserve and the pristine Pellicer CreekAquatic Preserve. Ripple Effect tour guides are certified UFFlorida Master Naturalist Program graduates, guaranteeingcomprehensive ecological and cultural tours in this beauti-ful coastal system.

There is one venue of a different sort that also deservesmention and is a good evening choice if taking in a Whitneylecture is not possible. The Matanzas Inlet Restaurant is one

of those local gold mines with great food and an alwayslively crowd. Located at the inlet just over two miles northon A1A from the marina, it presents a small transportationproblem for boat travelers, but my own transportation tech-nique solves this problem. I just ask anyone at the marina todrop me and my crew off on their way home for the night.A short stay in the bar after dinner, and a little begging, results in a return ride to the marina. It’s worked every time.If by chance it doesn’t work, you need to walk off that pileof peel-and-eat shrimp anyway!

A final benefit of a stop in Marineland is picking a goodtime to leave, especially if headed north. Marineland is aneasy day’s travel north or south to nice destinations. However, northbound cruisers must pass through the areaof the Matanzas Inlet with its notoriously skinny water, afew ICW miles from the marina. Matanzas has a large tidalrange and staying in Marineland allows cruisers to pick agood “tide time” to transit the area. Nearby is FortMatanzas, an 18th Century Spanish fort that dominates theMatanzas River and guards the back door to St. Augustine. The fort passed its only test, foiling an invasion by BritishGeneral Oglethorpe in 1742. Today, cruisers can anchor infront of the fort in plenty of water and, without fear of can-non fire, visit by dinghy.

Marineland Marina (www.marinelandmarina.com, orcall 904-814-9886) is terrific anytime—always pleasant andoften educational. Just a trip to the beach and an eveningbarbecue make for a great visit. Making the visit memorable

requires a couple of days and a little prior planning. For abehind-the-scenes look at Whitney Laboratory, contactJessica Long, director of Development and ExternalRelations, at [email protected], or call 904-461-4018. The evening lectures are free and no reservation isnecessary. Go to www.whitney.ufl.edu for a schedule.Ripple Effect Ecotours are available on most days. Givethem a call at 904-347-1565, or check the schedule and bookonline at www.rippleeffectecotours.com. MarinelandDolphin Adventure can also be booked online. Do yourself a favor, stop at Marineland. It’s a greatwaterway stop and just may be the biggest little town in thecountry!

Many thanks to the people of Marineland Town who assisted withthis article, especially: Eric Ziecheck and Chris Kelly of RippleEffect Tours; Leslie Babonis, the mayor of Marineland and a sci-entist at Whitney Laboratory; Terran McGinnis, MarinelandManager of Education and Community Development, andWhitney’s Jessica Long.

The 2016 Florida Everglades Challenge got off to a good7am start on Saturday morning on March 5, with 114boats starting (two did not start). Starting at Fort

DeSoto Beach in St. Petersburg, FL, the Challenge ends atKey Largo—a 300-mile trip down Florida’s Southwest Coast(depending on the route taken, the distance can be 260

miles). Conditions were relatively calm, although they weresimilar to last year’s start, which had many problems withthe Coast Guard calling off the event on day one after theyhad to rescue some kayakers who overturned in Tampa Bay(see May issue, page 40, Back Issues at SouthwindsMagazine.com). The northwest wind was coming from the

same direction as last year, blowing alittle weaker, but building quickly to agood 15 knots—but the incoming tidewas not coming in against the windand waves like it did last year, whichcreated a washing-machine effect inTampa Bay.

There were 90 entrants in thisyear’s Challenge, and another 17 inthe Ultra Marathon, which is heldconcurrently, as is the start of theFlorida Ultimate Challenge, whichhad nine entrants. The Ultra Marathongoes to Cape Haze Marina, 67 milessouth of the start. It is also the firstcheckpoint for the EvergladesChallenge, as well as for the UltimateChallenge, which circumnavigatesFlorida in a 1200-mile journey.

Generally, the kayaks go downthe inside in the ICW and—weatherpermitting—the sailboats go on theoutside. Many kayaks have sails, butthey still go down the ICW, althoughmany of the Hobie Adventure Islandkayaks, along with a few others simi-lar to them, are rigged with amas (out-rigged hulls), making them a sailingtrimaran. They regularly go down theoutside unless conditions are unbear-able. This year, like last year, mostwent down the outside in the lee ofthe Florida coast with a northwestwind creating great sailing conditionsfor heading south.

No major mishaps occurredbeyond the usual equipment failuresthat will always happen when almost100 small craft travel at least 260 milesin such conditions.

First to finish was Spawn (techni-cally known as Spawn of Frankenscot), aTampa Bay 22, crewed by St.Petersburg’s Jeff Linton (owner ofMasthead Sailing Gear), Jahn Tihansky(head of the U.S. Naval Academy’sOffshore Sailing Team) and OHRodgers (designer of Spawn).

Not only did they come in first, they beat the previous monohullrecord by 12 hours. They arrived at thefirst checkpoint, 67 miles, at Cape HazeMarina in 7 hours and 48 minutes. They reached the finish in Key Largoafter 1 day, 12 hours and 46 minutes, which means they arrived the follow-ing evening after the start. The windwas on their beam or aft of their beam75 percent of the sail down the coast, which was in the lee of the northeastwinds, making for smooth sailing. They left the beach at DeSoto withspinnaker flying.

Of the 90 entrants, 35 made it toKey Largo, four to the third check-point at Flamingo, 24 to the secondcheck point at Chokoloskee and 21 tothe first checkpoint at Cape Haze. Fivedid not make it to Cape Haze and onedid not start.

In the Florida Ultra Marathon, which goes to Cape Haze, out of the17 entrants, 15 made it to the finish, the first after 10 hours, 4 minutes. Thelast finished after 1 day, 3 hours and53 minutes.

In the Ultimate Challenge, withnine entrants, six finished—unlike thelast Ultimate Challenge in 2014 whichhad three entrants and only one finish-ing (team of 71-year-old Bill Fite and51-year-old Neil Calore, with Bill Fitefinishing this year in fifth). One did notstart and another two did not finish.(nor did they make it to Cape Haze).First to finish was the team of LarryFerber and Vladimir Eremeev, finish-ing the 1200-mile trip in 17 days, 23hours and 56 minutes. The last entrantfinished after 28 days, 3 hours, 16 min-utes—four weeks of traveling.

Meet Shea Gibson—avidkitesurfer, defense con-tractor, and self-taught

meteorologist. Gibson, who grewup in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and stilllives there, spends most of hisdays working for the Departmentof Homeland Security, and therest of his working hours as aforecaster and general ambassa-dor for WeatherFlow.com.

If you’re not familiar withWeatherFlow.com, this companygot its start roughly 16 years agomaking and installing weatherstations around the coastal U.S. toaugment regional forecasting. Aquarter of a century ago, the bestmost mariners could do for windforecasts was to tap into the National Buoy Data Center. Then, like now, that information mostly covers offshoreareas. Inshore, you could rely on information captured byinstruments installed at airports, but the coastal region waslargely uncovered.

“That’s where WeatherFlow.com came in,” explainsGibson. “There was a niche to be filled providing wind dataalong the coast, so the company started installing its stationsas close to the water as it could.” The objective, he says, wasto gather more accurate wind data for these sectors andmake it available more frequently. “Whereas the updatesused to be hourly, our company has enabled the system tooffer those updates every five minutes. What you’re talkingabout here are very near real-time observations.”

Gibson says that the company now has nearly 500sophisticated, self-contained, solar-powered stations situat-ed around most of the coastal U.S., as well as the GreatLakes, a few other inland regions, Hawaii, Puerto Rico andthe U.S. Virgin Islands. Additionally, the company’s meteo-rologists—and all end users—have access to data from over50,000 other weather-sensing stations around the globe.

He’s keen to add that the wind data his company gen-erates is shared with NOAA and the National WeatherService, to assist with their efforts. “It’s a great partner-ship,” says Gibson. “We share data in both directions. ButI should be clear, WeatherFlow.com does not assume therole of an authority. When it comes to severe weather advi-

sories, that’s not what we do.That’s the National WeatherService’s domain.”

What WeatherFlow.com doesdo is provide five different sub-scription-based consumer prod-ucts or applications, each ofwhich is developed for a specificsub sect of the water sportscrowd. For sailors, there’sSailFlow. For kiteboarders, there’s iKiteSurf. For wind-surfers, there’s iWindsurf. Forfishermen, there’s FishWeather. And, for the general population, there’s WindAlert.

Each of these is available forfree—initially—and accessiblevia desktop, laptop, tablet and

smart phone. But if you want a more robust package withmore detailed data, the company offers various levels of sub-scription. The base products start at $3.99 per month. AndWeatherFlow.com also has a product for professionals calledDatascope that allows businesses such as harbor pilots asso-ciations to see the forecast data with much more detail.

Gibson leads WeatherFlow.com’s forecasting team forthe Southeast region, which stretches from Jekyll Island,GA, to Cedar Island, NC. He says that he and the company’sother forecasters start by examining WeatherFlow’s propri-etary data. That information is then considered againstadditional data from the National Weather Service and theNational Buoy Data Center. Weather models are also fac-tored in. “I have to look at a lot of information—the 500 mil-libar map, the 850 millibar map and the upper atmospheredata—to get an accurate picture.” Ultimately, Gibson andhis colleagues issue forecasts for their respective regions.

WeatherFlow also offers plug-in wind meters for smartphones, which provide instant information that can beshared via Facebook, as onsite reports, tweeted or emailed. The company’s newest product, WeatherMeter operateswith Bluetooth connectivity and adds air temperature, humidity, wind chill and heat indices. It’s almost a minia-ture personal weather station.

The best thing about WeatherFlow.com’s offerings isthat the forecasts are based on information obtained almostin real time. For Gibson and his fellow meteorologists, real-

It’s almost too obvious to assert how pivotal an element that is for sailors. But how much do most of us understand about wind?

And where do we turn to get a better sense of it? In the Carolina Lowcountry—and beyond—Shea Gibson has the answer.

By Dan Dickision

Page 41: Southwinds May 2016

time weather information isakin to the Holy Grail. Andavid kiteboarders see it thatway, too. This is one of the rea-sons why Gibson established theChucktown Wind Report, aFacebook group page where heoffers a range of informationincluding forecasts, updates, alerts, graphs, maps, photos, videos, analyses and the occa-sional humorous post. He saysover 1,000 individuals havesigned up as members, not all ofthem kiteboarders, but racingsailors, cruisers, recreational sailors and pilots as well.

During the first few weeks of spring this year, Gibson’sposts on the Chucktown Wind Report began to arrive withincreased frequency, often numerous times a day. “It’simportant for the company to step up its outreach this time ofyear,” he explains. “More and more people are getting out onthe water, but also, this kind of outreach leads to a lot of userinteraction, and that helps us build our brand. Additionally,it helps us understand more precisely what information ourconsumers want so that we can deliver accordingly.”

That personal touch is rooted in Gibson’s background.

He got into the forecasting busi-ness with WeatherFlow. comalmost indirectly. “I had alwaysbeen interested in weather. Mydad was an Air Force meteorol-ogist and he taught me a lot. Asa kiteboarder, I realized that mypeers were getting access toweather data, but they weren’tnecessarily understanding it. So,I started an online wind groupto share information about ourlocal area and much of what Ishared came from iKiteSurf. Icalled WeatherFlow to see if the

company would be OK with me continuing to use its datathat way. One of the partners joined our group to see justhow I was using the data. At the same time, he said the com-pany was looking to expand its forecasts into the Southeast, and asked me if I wanted to join. It was just good timing.”

So, if you’re occasionally puzzled by wind dynamics inyour neck of the woods and want to learn more, or if you justwant an accurate forecast for your day on the water, consid-er checking out WeatherFlow.com. Any sailor will tell you,you can never be too well informed about the weather.

As I unrolled my yoga mat on the floor next to myfriend Julie, she sat up and whispered, “I’ve justlanded the job of my dreams.” “Tell me after the

class,” I said, wondering what the job of her dreams was. After all, she’d been teaching rafting in North Carolina thelast few summers.

Julie Forbes, who has been sailing since she was a baby—strapped to the mast of her parents’ sailboat—had just land-ed the job of her dreams. She grew up in New York and sailedon Long Island Sound, was taught by her mother and fatheron the Atlantic, and has been sailing ever since. She pur-chased her first sailboat, a Catalina, with the inheritance herfather left her. She’s been part of the Sarasota SailingSquadron since 1980 and a Luffing Lassie since 2003.

Sitting on the dock at the Sarasota Sailing Squadrona few days later watching the dolphins playing, she told meabout her new job. She is the sailing instructor assigned tothe Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s new program, Start to SailNow, teaching sailing to adults.

People arriving from the frozen north and Midwest seeSarasota’s beautiful bay with sailboats and motor boatscruising along, and they want to become part of the scene.During our conversation, two women from Nantucket wan-dered down the dock to ask us about the sailing squadron.Could they rent a boat? Did they have to become members?

Did they give sailing lessons? Did they have to join to takelessons? We directed them to life-long member and GeneralManager Craig Bridges to answer their questions.

The Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s new sailing program istargeted to adults who have some sailing experience or arenew to sailing. The Squadron gets two or three calls a weekabout the program from couples and singles who call to findout whether they have a sailing program and if they canrent boats. The Squadron has boats to rent out, but the lia-bility would be too great without proof of enough sailingknowledge to manage the boats.

Although the Squadron has an ongoing Youth SailingProgram, no programs have been offered recently to answerthe needs of adult couples and singles who want to learn tosail. In November, Ray Markham, the education coordina-tor, started Learn to Sail Now to honor the Squadron’s mis-sion statement. He made Julie the lead instructor, based onher availability. Lessons are scheduled through the office. She takes out one or two students at a time, and otherinstructors are on call as the program develops. The pro-gram uses the Squadrons’ 17-foot O’Day and a 20-footFlying Scot. The sailboats have no motors and are under sailat all times, or, as Julie put it, “Coming in hot all the time.”

Two days of sailing instruction for one or two traineesfor four hours costs $200 per person.

New Sailing Instruction Programfor Adults at the Sarasota Sailing SquadronBy Patricia Moore

Page 43: Southwinds May 2016

She showed me the 10-page pamphlet they created for the4-hour basic sailing course which has six basic components:

Learning the rigging. The first hour of the lesson is on dryland where Julie pointed to the outline of a sailboat on thefirst page, “Of course, the first thing to understand is aboutthe sail and the rigging, and finding the wind so we don’t sitin irons.”

Learning to dock. Getting the boat safely back to dock with-out crashing into other sailboats or the docks.

Getting in and out of the dock. Identify the wind directionand depart from the leeward side of the dock if possible sothe wind pushes the boat away from the dock.

Tacking. Moving the bow through the wind or comingabout turns the boat from a port to a starboard tack, or star-board to port.

Jibe. Moving the stern of the boat through the wind. Boat safety at all times.

When the weather turns nasty and students can’t take theboats out, they watch instructional videos, do land drillsand learn how to tack and maneuver together.

Other things that are covered: • Basic knot tying. • The rules of the road for sailboats. • Basic parts of the sail, boating safety, and how the

direction of the wind affects the sailboat movement.

The program differs from other sailing programs in that itfocuses on adults who want to learn small-boat sailing orday sailing. It is for recreational sailing not racing.

I asked Julie her hopes, fears and expectations for herstudents. Her hope is that her students will have a goodtime and fall in love with sailing and love it as much as shedoes. She fears that her students will become frustratedwith the myriad of things a sailor must learn to safely man-age a sailboat. She hopes to work with them so that won’thappen, and they won’t become impatient with themselves. Her expectations are that her students will accomplish thebasic sailing and be able to helm or crew a small sailboatindependently.

Julie hopes to teach a future program with advancedsailing techniques.

GOT A SAILING STORY?If you have a story about an incident that happened that was a real learning experience, or a funny story, or a weird orunusual story that you’d like to tell, send it to [email protected]. Keep them short—around 800-1000 wordsor less, maybe a little more. Photos nice, but not required. We pay for these stories.

that there are no rules. “I am out oftown and nobody can see me here; Iam practically invisible.”

The boaters who come here are agreat part of the Bahamian economy.

The boaters and their boats come inall shapes and sizes, from multimil-lion-dollar yachts to small sailingboats. The larger yachts usually tie upat one of the several marinas, whilemany of the smaller sailboats anchorout to save dock fees. It is a blend ofthe rich and the not-so-rich sharingthe same restaurant or bar looking forthe same island adventure or the nextlove adventure. It seems to work foreveryone, and the Bahamians earn afairly good living by providing whatthe boaters are looking for. TheBahamians I have met are very nicehard-working folks and seem to beokay with continually being on theentertainment committee. It all seemsto balance out, and life here is good.

Having closed my business—andretired—I am like many other boaters

Island Time By John Galloway

Life begins late morning in theAbacos. There are very few“let’s-watch-the-sunrise-honey”

boaters around here when I am uparound six each morning. I prettymuch have the whole sunrise tomyself. Years of punching the clockhas left these ol’ blue eyes on automat-ic wake-up before the sun gets up.Even the diehard fishermen who nor-mally get up early casually leave thedock after nine each morning.

The issue with all of this is whateverybody did the night before, whichin Marsh Harbour is visiting the sev-eral drinking holes, trying to decidewhich one has the best rum concoc-tion. Each pub has it’s own name forits drink, such as The Bilge Burner,Goombay Smash, Rum Runner, SexOn The Beach (yes that is a drinkhere)—or the ever popular, HarbourHammer. Add a secret blend of rumswith a secret blend of sweet juices intoeach drink and if you have one toomany, the next morning your bilgedoes indeed feel like it is burning.

When life does getaround to starting here you seea resort town of a few thousandBahamians running an entertainingplace where many tens of thousands ofvisitors come to get some Island Timeaway from the daily hustle of theirlives. New arrivals are sometimesquick to walk around without theirshoes and with shirt tails out as if tosay, “I do not have to do what I have todo in my ordinary life back home.”Many men don’t shave, women skipthe makeup, and suddenly, drinking atlunch seems perfectly normal. O fcourse, there is sometimes a price topay for this newfound freedom, andyou occasionally see a man with a bad-looking stubble of a beard slightlyhunched over not feeling well—alongwith a bloody toe from walking aroundon the wooden docks barefooted.Singles who are here alone—and somemarried people who are here alone—operate by “resort rules,” which states

who come here, in that I too am look-ing for some Island Time. Back inTampa I would not even think ofgoing out without my cell phone, andwatching the various cable TV showsseemed like a good way to spendone’s time. Here, my cell phone doesnot even work, and I swear my life isnot worse off because of it. My day isquieter without being instantly avail-able to anyone who has my cell num-ber, and I have absolutely no desire tocall someone up just to see what theyare doing. What a strange new world.Without cable TV, I am free, and thatis the word: free—free from inconse-quential news bulletins such as“Breaking News…the economy issinking,” or a newsflash that somefamous pop-tart was seen in anightclub without her underwearon. Instead, with this new Island-Time freedom, really importantpeople become…really important. There is time now to read about

Randy Paush, the Carnegie-Mellonprofessor who recently died of pan-

creatic cancer and who has inspired somany with his college lecture on whatit is like to die with dignity. Watchinga Wall Street Journal online video ofProfessor Paush talking about his atti-tude on leaving his family when hedies produces a tear in your eye andgives an important lesson on courageto all who watch it.

There is even time now to readthe latest Randy Wayne White novelabout our own wonderful BocaGrande/Sanibel area that is so impor-tant to all of us and so filled with nat-ural beauty of its own. Of course, thisIsland-Time freedom from unimpor-tant television news and cell calls alsoleaves more time for the occasionalBilge Burner at the Jib Room here atthe Marsh Harbour Marina!

But not to leave the modernworld behind completely, there iswide-spread Wi-Fi available so you
