Village Organizations

If you would like your organisation added to this list, or your number above has changed, please let me know. Thanks from the Editor.

As it states above, the RUH Hopper service has ceased due to funding issues. A new service is now in operation, run by A and G Minibuses and will be known as the “Hospital Rover Service”. Unfortunately the bus service will be less frequent and the fares will be higher. Please ring 01985 212213 for details.

Don’t forget, if someone is suffering a cardiac arrest, the chances of survival are increased if the patient is given treatment by defibrillation. A defibrillator can be found on the wall of the Farmhouse Inn. The Farmhouse number is 01225 764366 if you wish to contact them.

Parish Council News – June/July 2016.

Community Policing Team. Bradford on Avon is currently suffering from a series of Thefts from vehicles particularly in the rural area. Please make sure that your cars are secure and report any suspicious activity. Trowbridge is still seeing a higher than normal number of cycles stolen. Some of these are being taken from shed or gar-ages but others are taken when they are left insecure. Please secure your cycles appropriately and remember to keep a record of the serial numbers. Wiltshire Council. At the Parish Council meetings, Cllr. Prickett gave a brief report on the following topics:

Wiltshire Council Public Transport Consultation – Some 11,500 replies to the questionnaire had been received and these responses had now been analysed. He added that a report had now been prepared by Wiltshire Council and this is available for the public to access on the Wiltshire Council website. He commented that there were few surprises in the report and that there were unlikely to be any changes in the bus services for at least a year and thereafter it was like-ly that evening and Sunday services were the most vulnerable to cuts.

Speed Indicator Device (SID) – West Ashton Parish Council was taking the lead in respect of this subject and it was currently determining the modus operandi. Following a discussion on the proposed scheme, Southwick Parish Council resolved to withdraw from the scheme.

Community Governance – The review was in progress but there was no effect on the Civil Parish of Southwick.

Strategic Housing Land Allocation Assessment (SHLAA) – A new plan of the SHLAA areas has been published and a decision in respect of this assessment by Wiltshire Council was likely at the end of the year. He added that there were no major changes to the original proposals. Community Benefit Fund. Cllr. Carey stated that the developer of the Solar Farm had made a community grant of £20,000 to the Parish Council and subsequent payments of £1000 per annum (subject to RPI increases). This grant or fund is termed the Community Benefit Fund. He stated that this money has to be spent for the benefit of the community. Cllr Carey tabled a proposed scheme for the disbursement of the financial contribution made by the Solar Farm developer and a draft ‘grant applica-tion’ form to allow community groups to apply to the Parish Council for a donation from the Community Benefit Fund. The Parish Council resolved to adopt this proposed scheme and the grant application form, subject to some minor amendments to the latter. Neighbourhood Plans. The Clerk confirmed that Wiltshire Council had approved the designation of Southwick Neighbourhood Area on 31 May 2016 following the application that was made on 10 February 2016. There was a general discussion on the benefits and otherwise of a Neighbourhood Plan for Southwick and the process for developing one. Cllr. Morland outlined the process for creating a Neighbourhood Plan and commented that the designation of the whole of the Civil Parish of Southwick as the Neighbourhood Area was a valuable first step that need not proceed further. Cllr. S Jones stated that it was essential that Southwick does develop its own Neighbourhood Plan. Cllr. Carey argued that it would be unwise to bind a subse-quent Council – to be elected in May 2017 – to a decision now to develop one whereas other councillors championed the benefits of developing such a plan now. It was noted that West Ashton Parish Council had employed a professional plan-ner to lead on the development of a Neighbourhood Plan for West Ashton and it was thought beneficial by councillors to adopt a similar approach for Southwick. The Parish Council resolved that it supported the development of a Neighbourhood Plan for Southwick. Environment. The Chairman tabled two letters; the first from the Rainbows, the second from the Girl Guides. In respect of the former, the Council agreed that the Rainbows can plant some bedding plants at the Old Blind House Jubilee Garden and Cllr. West agreed to contact the Rainbows and to provide the trays of bedding plants that he had prepared for their use. Finance. The Parish Council discussed the request for a donation from Girlguiding but decided that the nature of the requested donation did not accord with the general policy that the Parish Council had adopted for donations. The Council resolved not to make the requested donation to Girlguiding. It was suggested that Girlguiding should be invited to make a grant application from the Community Benefit Fund. Clerk Vacancy. There is a job vacancy for the Clerk to the Parish Council with effect from 1 November 2016. Are you interested in this part-time job? Please see separate advert for details. Parish Council Meetings. Southwick Parish Council meet at Southwick Village Hall every third Tuesday in the month (except August) with the meetings commencing at 7.30pm. Members of the public are always very welcome to attend and immediate-ly prior to the formal meeting they have the opportunity to view planning applications and to raise any matter relating to their community that concerns them.

The next meeting Tuesday August 9th, Please note different week.

*Planning Meetings are subject to demand and will be cancelled, if no plans are received. Please refer to the Noticeboard for confirmation.

Community Benefit Fund

Applications for funding from Southwick Parish Council

Do you

• or a group of friends have an idea of a project to improve things for people living in Southwick but lack the necessary funding?

• or do you belong to an organisation that needs funding support?

Background

Following on from protracted negotiations with developers during the planning processes for Solar Farms in Southwick your Parish Council reached contractual agreements that mean we are now receiv-ing “community benefit funds” to be used by the Parish Council “as it sees fit, as long as the use of funds is to the benefit of residents”.

Applications

We therefore welcome applications both from Southwick Village and others providing Southwick Resi-dents will benefit. This year we have received £20,000 from the Bradley Road solar farm but in future years will receive £1,000 per year.

Therefore in this first year we have decided to fund:

• one application up to £10,000

• one application up to £3,000

• an appropriate number of applications under £1,000

All applications will be considered on their merits by the Parish Council. Our wish is that any grant is used as “capital funds” to create an ongoing lasting impact or legacy. We do not wish to support/subsidize normal running expenses. Funds not allocated this year will be carried forward to next year's round of applications. Applications must be received by the Parish Clerk by 31.10.2016

Application forms are to be found on the home page of Southwick Parish Council www.southwickwilts.co.uk or are available from the Parish Council Clerk.

Vacancy for the Clerk to the Parish Council

A vacancy exists for the position of Clerk to Southwick Parish Council. The successful applicant will be required to work a maximum of 30 hours per calendar month. Salary negotiable. The main duties will include dealing with all correspondence, making necessary payments, recording all receipts, maintaining financial records in accordance with the requirements of The Accounts and Audit Regulations 2015, attending all Parish Council and other meetings and producing the associated agen-das, minutes, associated papers and dealing with all matters arising. Previous experience as a Clerk to a Council and knowledge of Local Councils would be a distinct ad-vantage. It is essential that the applicant has a good knowledge of IT and is computer literate with access to a computer and Microsoft Office (or compatible) software suite and is familiar with accessing the internet (including e-mail receipt and transmission, e-mail attachments, pdf files etc). Proven inter-personal skills and an ability to be proactive in dealing with a wide range of problems is essential. Applications are to be received by: Cllr. K Noble, 230, Chantry Gardens, Southwick, Wiltshire BA14 9QX [email protected] no later than 14 August 2016 NOTE. Southwick Parish Council recognises that it has a general duty to consider the following matters in the exercise of any of its functions: Equal Opportunities (race, gender, sexual orientation, marital status and any disability), Crime and Disorder, Health and Safety and Human Rights.

Annual Fete

The Chairman & members of the Group Executive would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended or supported in any way our Annual Fete & Car Boot Sale which was held on Saturday 18th June. We must however apologise to you all for the lack of entertainment and displays on the field during the after-noon. This was mainly due to the pre-booked groups failing to turn up at the last moment for various unknown reasons. However, extra thanks must be given to the traders and private individuals from both within and out of the vil-lage who donated gifts and prizes for the Grand Draw. The sales of tickets contribute greatly towards the overall profit which this year after paying all the expenses will be approximately £800. This year the Group have installed new fire doors and windows at our headquarters so the money raised this year will help towards paying for this work which will benefit all headquarters use.

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday party celebrations. I owe the Parish Council an apology. In the last edition of the Newsletter, I somehow chopped off the sentence which should have thanked the Parish Council for their kindness and generosity in funding the 90th Birthday celebrations. I am sorry and have smacked myself on the wrist plus written 100 lines of apologies. Seriously though, thank you Southwick Par-ish Council for funding such a special event. Here’s to Her Majesty’s 100th! John (The Editor)

On Midsummer’s Day, 25 volunteers from Nationwide Building Society swelled our normal numbers when they arrived at Southwick Country Park. It was wonderful to have so many extra hands to help undertake some large-scale countryside management, so we split into four groups for carrying out the following tasks:

Reinforcing the stream bank by the small wooden bridge

Creating two large reptile hibernacula in Village Green

Cutting back the hedgerow to ‘liberate’ several trees planted by the Guides five years ago

Installing two new benches to replace two that had succumbed to our British weather

Cutting back one of the paths at Village Green

Cutting back undergrowth under some of our oldest oak trees.

We got an enormous amount done that day, with lots of tea, coffee and chat during the mid-morning break. Two of the Friends’ dogs assisted, with one (as you can see) taking it very easy after all that effort! Huge thanks must go to all the Nationwide staff and the Friends of Southwick Country Park who assisted with the day, and to Cllr Prickett who came along to help after his meeting had finished. And thanks also to Dave Galliers – our resident Country Park photographer! Now onto the school summer holidays; fun family events are being held at Southwick Country Park. Into the Wild on 9th August, a Treasure Hunt and activities on 16th August and an evening Bat Walk on 25th Au-gust. Keep a look out for posters around the Country Park and on the noticeboards for further information, or email [email protected] – we hope to see you there! 1st Southwick Rainbows

The Rainbows have had another very busy term. In May we had a very exciting drama evening led by one of our parents. In June, we held a tea party with North Bradley Rainbows to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, we had sandwiches and cakes and had fun singing some action songs, we all wore the beautiful crowns we had made. We also had an evening, led by the Scrapstore, making castles, the girls were so creative and really enjoyed the evening. Our Olympic games evening was very successful, the girls took part in a variety of races and everyone did really well. We finished our term with a trip to Bradford on Avon, we had a short walk to the play park and enjoyed sharing some chips. We have said goodbye to Faith and Ella, who are moving on to Brownies, we wish them luck. For information about the unit contact Claire or Jennie at [email protected] or visit the guiding website.

You can contact: Claire or Jennie at 1st [email protected] or go to girlguiding website.

1st Southwick Brownies

This term we have had a visit from Pets At Home which the girls really enjoyed. We have also celebrated the

Queen’s birthday with having a tea party with North Bradley Brownies. The Brownies have had a mini Glas-

tonbury festival where the girls listened to music and did face painting which was great fun. We have also had an even-

ing on friendship and respect when our new Brownies came to visit. The Brownies are looking forward to our end of

term trip to Southwick Country Park. In the summer holidays we are going to have a pack holiday at WOSG which the

girls are really looking forward too.

The Brownie Team

Southwick Senior Section

The guides have enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday with a special evening and tea party with North Bradley Guides. Recently the guides have been busy outdoors with various activities in-cluding a sports evening, two weeks of outdoor cooking and a trip to Airhop in Bristol. On the tram-polines new members, Casey, Emison, Madison and Takara made their guide promise. Some older brownies have visited guides and will be joining after the summer holidays. In September the guides are going away for an activity weekend in the New Forest.

Switzerland Trip

After two years of fundraising, and by the time you read this report we will have enjoyed our special Guide and Senior Section holiday to Switzerland to celebrate the Centenary of the Senior Section. During the holiday, we aim to use many forms of transport to explore the area around Adelboden up in the mountains. We will visit “Our Chalet”, one of the five guiding World Centres and go to the top of the Jungfrau, the highest point in Europe. We hope to use trains, buses, cable cars, gondolas, tobog-gans, boats, funicular railways, etc. as well as do a lot of walking. A further report of our trip will be in the next edition of the Village News.

1st Southwick Guides

What a fantastic few weeks we have had, culminating with the sports week, sports day & leaver’s party. Active Trowbridge were invit-ed and entertained the children with a week of sports, games and challenges. We finished the week with parents & children all enjoy-ing sports morning. It was lovely to see parents & grandparents cheering their children on and even racing with them. Thank you all for attending & supporting them and thank you to Aaron & his colleagues from Active Trowbridge. Our last day on Friday 15th July was one of mixed feelings, tears of happiness as we said goodbye to our 20 leavers. Tears because we have had them for so long & to see them grow into individual characters but happiness to see them ready for their next adventure “Big School”. All the staff wish them all great success & happiness. All the staff would also like to thank everyone for the lovely gifts, kind words & presents they received at the end of term. Also for the support they have received through the transition with changing staff. Without support of the parents & their lovely children, there would be no pre-school. If you are new to the area or require a place for your child, please pay us a visit. We have places for September although some ses-sions are filling fast. Our sessions are 09.00am to 12.00 noon, 12.00 noon to 3.00pm or 09.00am to 3.00pm. We also can offer 08.30am to 9.00am at premium rates, there are spaces available. All we need to do now is wish the children, parents & all the community a lovey hot summer!

Pass through the village of Southwick between 8.45 am and 9.45 am on a Saturday morning and you’ll be greeted by parked cars galore and a stream of enthusiastic, chattering people, lycra clad and neon in colour. Well if you have spotted them perhaps you are wondering just what is this all about? In an age of concerns over obesity, heart disease and a sedentary lifestyle parkrun breaks new ground. It started off with 13 runners in Bushy Park but has now evolved into a global running event operating in 407 locations across the UK, spanning many coun tries worldwide and has over a million people taking part globally. It is only possible due to the diligence and support of volunteers and the best bit? It’s completely free to participate! All you need to do is register on the parkrun website, print off a barcode and bring that with you when you run. The Country Park opened its gates to the parkrun in 2011 and has just celebrated its 250th run and the highest attendance to date of 301 runners. There are monthly prizes, an occasional fancy dress theme and there’s always time to support Squir-rels tearoom (the cafe for adults with learning difficulties) by having breakfast or a cuppa. In view of all that I guess you could say that makes Southwick a pretty special place. But the real question is what does it mean to the community in and around Southwick?

I first heard of parkrun in 2012 from a friend in Southampton. I wasn’t a runner at all at the time, in fact I hated running (and some days still do!). I had just signed up to do the Great North and South Run with 4 friends for charity and I had 6 months to train. I didn’t have anyone to go out with so found it hard to motivate myself. I remember my first parkrun distinctly. A true sense of freedom, running with 250+ people, all moving in the same direction, in our own way, like a cog in an enormous running machine. The mind shutting off from the thoughts and stresses of the week and then the excitement at receiving the email telling you what your time, position and age graded score was. There was no other option- come back next week and try to improve. I was addicted. Not just to the competition with myself, to see what I was capable of or even the fitness itself but I was addicted to the camaraderie and the friendly atmosphere which is lead and driven by Run Directors Sean and Fiona Price, Ken Price, Warren Wade, Liz Haigh, Simon Lathbury and their team. People genuinely want you to do well here. They are pleased you have made the effort to get out of bed.

I truly love parkrun because I love the spirit and I love the ethos of it. I am proud to be a parkrunner and I am proud to know the people who attend. Just ask around, you’ll discover so many different reasons why people run; “I began parkrun after I had my first heart attack” states Mark Yerbury (age 60 ish) I laughed aloud at this. Mark is one of those running veterans, someone I’m always trying to catch and a thoroughly nice man. For others it’s about being active as a family. Take “The Rucksack Crew” as I call them. Mum and Dad run with rucksacks on their backs to make it a tougher work out for them whilst Flo the dog gets her morning exercise and daughter Poppy (age 6) delights in achieving a pb (personal best). “If it hadn't been for park run I would have given up trying to run at all. Peo-ples willingness to help me has made me get up and out of bed at the weekend” says Wendy Eamer who had given up at running but started up again thanks to the parkrun. “ It’s like a family, it unites people, wherever you are in the country you know that there will always be a group of smiling faces on a Saturday morning waiting to greet you” beamed Hannah Eaton a regular face at Southwick. Par-ents run alone for their own sanity whilst other weeks they encourage their little ones to set and achieve goals, to show by example how important leading an active lifestyle is. Dave Hall is another friend of mine, he runs alone and some weeks he pushes his baby granddaughter round in a pushchair to give his daughter a break, that’s the only time I beat him! There is no such thing as a “typical parkrunner”. We have elite athletes who complete the 5K course in 16 minutes and we have steady but determined runners who take 45 mins and we have a host of people in between. A few weeks ago a lady known as Janet did her first parkrun at age 71. parkrun is inclusive to all ages, shapes and sizes, the fit and the “would like to be fitter”. People run with health issues, bad backs, dodgy knees and some are visually impaired. It doesn’t matter who you are or how fast you are, what matters is that we are all runners. We at parkrun invite and implore you to pop by the next time you have a Saturday free to be part of this fantastic community event. There is nothing nicer as a runner than seeing the smiles of onlookers or hearing words of encouragement. Bring your dog, bring your family, bring your mother in-law or just bring yourself but we would love you to share and to see and to experience what makes parkrun so special. Thanks to Martin Pearce, resident photographer for the photos.

Letters & messages from the Village

Garden open day. I have been asked by two ladies of the village if I can mention that they have an idea to hold “Village Garden Open Day”, probably in early June of next year. It would be based on an idea similar to the “National Garden Scheme” whereby people open their gardens to the public to view. If you would be prepared to open your garden and take part in this project, could you please let me know and I can forward your names to the ladies organising the scheme, or contact them directly on the numbers below. The date has not yet been set but it has been suggested that a weekend in early June would be most appropriate, that is when most gardens are looking good, plenty of colour and interest. Donation buckets will be placed in the gardens for any voluntary donations and any money raised will be donated to a yet to be decided charity. It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, or whether it is hard land-scaped, laid to lawn, traditional country cottage or terrace house with containers, anything goes. So, if you are interested in opening up your garden, please give me (The Editor) your name and address & I’ll pass it on. I am hoping that some of the gardens will lay on snacks & drinks for sale, a light refreshment for the visitors to enjoy, especially if the weather is nice. Hope to hear from as many of you as possible, sorry for the lack of firm dates and details, but this is in the early stages of organising. If you would like to contact the two ladies directly, their names and telephone numbers are Linda on 01225 764409 and Betty on 01225 765341.

Mileposts an article by Stephen Carey

From 1767, mileposts were compulsory on all turnpike roads, not only to inform travelers of direction and dis-tances, but to help coaches keep to schedule and for charging for changes of horses at the coaching inns. The distances were also used to calculate postal charges before the uniform postal rate was introduced in 1840. At the height of the turnpike era, there were 20,000 miles of roads with milestones. Such waymarkers are fast disappearing; around 9000 are thought to survive in the UK. Most were removed or defaced in World War II to baffle potential German invaders and not all were replaced afterwards. Many have been demolished as roads have been widened, or have been victims of collision damage. Such was the fate of our last milestone in Southwick which was pushed into the ditch by a car coming off the road on the bend at the top of Firs Hill near our new Village Gateway. Not all however was lost as the milestone was rescued by Councilor Tony Doel, who used heavy lifting equipment to position it in line with the Village Gate-way. Together they certainly enhance this entrance to our village.

Photographs by John Fox

You can see the damage made by the vehicle impact.

Abandoned vehicles The Parish Council have asked me to mention the fact that there have been a number of reported abandoned or broken down vehicles at various locations in and around the village. The Parish Council have reported this matter to the police but they claim that the vehicles are on private land and that they are therefore powerless to get them removed. If you are the owner of any of these vehicles, the Parish Council would ask if you could please arrange to have them removed as some are actually causing an obstruction to road users. Thank you.

Welcome to the August edition of the village magazine and the latest update on events in the village, as notified by the Wiltshire Police. Once again there appears to be mostly minor crimes committed in the area, although good news, any crime is bad but no crime would probably be an unreachable goal. Of the crimes reported over the past two months, the following 30 are the most notable. 1 x Vehicle: Bonnet removed/stolen 3 x Road Transport Related: includes traffic accidents.

3 x Criminal Damage/Arson: Includes damage to farm fences, a scratched vehicle and someone setting fire to a hay feeder in Southwick Country Park. 3 x Antisocial behaviour: Persons knocking on doors and children doing the age old door knocking and running away. 3 x Concern for person’s safety: Adult and children short term missing without prior notice. 5 x Personal Violence: Includes Unwanted Texts and minor arguments between adults and children. 5 x Missing Persons: All located and safe. 2 x Suspicious Circumstances: Male Exposing Himself. 2 x Domestic Incidents. 1 x Pet related: Person abusing a puppy. 2 x Other non specific. Once again the Police are concerned about the amount of push bikes being stolen in Trowbridge and would like to hear from anyone with any information on these crimes. Internet crime is another growing concern for them as the perpetrators of these crimes are getting more sophisticated and cunning. If you are unsure of something please ask someone who would know about computer scams - perhaps a son or daughter. I would just like to take this opportunity to voice a personal concern/observation. Over the years membership of Neigh-bourhood watch has declined and after many requests for people to sign up, there has been no interest. I attended the Scout Fete a few weeks ago, which I have been unable to do for a few years, and was amazed at how it has declined, through no fault of the organiser. It is a shadow of its former event. On the other hand the attendance of a meeting refer-ence building of houses in the village or the setting up of a Gypsy camp attracts great interest. My point being, everyone seems to want to save and enjoy the village, but no one seems to want to join or give time to involve themselves in com-munity organisations. In order to have a village and protect it for the future, it is up to all of us to become involved, even as an event attendee. I took up this position because no one else would come forward and will continue to be a liaison be-tween the Police and the village. I obviously have my own life and family commitments so am not available all the time, but I would like to think that if you have a problem then PC Maria Badder will look into it for you. If it is something immediate or important then phone the two emergency numbers. Due to financial cuts the Police are struggling as we all can see so it is now becoming more important for us as civilians to be their eyes and ears in our local area. We know what is normal or who should be here and should recognise when something is out of place or a stranger is in your vicinity. I will leave it there for this edition. Anyone wishing to contact me with a NHW problem can do so on, 763314 or [email protected] if not available then I will get back to you as soon as I can. Jim Jilbert.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

CURRENT SECTOR SERIES in Trowbridge

We still continue to see higher than expected levels of cycle thefts across the sector. Most of the taken bikes (although not all) were left insecure. Please remember to secure your bicycle even if you leave it for a short time. We have also very recently seen a slight increase in Dwelling Burglaries. These remain one the most impactive offences. Please don’t be afraid to report suspicious activity via 101 (or 999 if appropriate).

BLIND LANE PARKING Parking has slowly become an issue for road users with the parking along Blind Lane, Southwick. Can I please ask any residents, visitors to the area, to try and park in a more sensible location. Lately I have had reports where road users are having near misses due to vehicles being parked on the bend and of course there are on coming vehicles in the middle of the road and being seen at the last minute. Sometimes during the evenings where it is becoming darker, there is not enough visibility and vehicles parked up are again not being seen. Please think of the safety of yourselves, other road users and pedestrians.

Trowbridge Majorettes

We have been quite busy recently, we did a carnival & display at Bromham, display at the Avenue School in Warminster, display in the Market Place in Westbury, display at the Fete at North Bradley and finally a display in Trowbridge park for the Active Trowbridge Day. Thank you to all the organisa-tions that invited us to attend these events and sorry that we couldn’t do the Southwick Scout Fete as we were already booked to do another event elsewhere. We have been lucky with the weather, sunshine at all the events.

Several new girls have joined our troupe recently, we wish them all the fun and good luck as we enter the carnival season, Melksham, Trowbridge, Warminster, Frome, etc. We still have vacancies, so if any girl is interested in joining our troupe, please contact us, either Gwenda Noakes (troupe leader) on 01373 823000 or me, Marilyn Fox on 01225 762930.

Southwick School

It does not seem possible that we are coming to the end of another school year. At the end of term as well as saying goodbye to our year six children, we also say farewell to a number of staff: Mrs Sandberg, Mrs McClarty, Mrs Parsons and Mr Hunter. We wish them all well as they move on to pastures new. During the term, the PTA organised our Summer Fete and even though the weather was not that wonderful, they raised just over £1000. The School Council organised a sponsored bounce and the children had a great time in pairs on the bouncy castle. The money raised will go towards a new outside performance area. The Y3 children tasted lots of new fruits and veg when members of the Tesco staff visited their class and then they spent an enjoyable morning in the store exploring different healthy foods. The Y2 children had a super day when they visited Bristol Zoo and the Reception and Y1 children spent an enjoya-ble day in Southwick Country Park, which included a visit to see the animals. The focus for the Y6 children, after they had finished their SAT`s, turned to their end of term performance. They have been very busy making props and learning lines for their version of Macbeth. We have also had sports day where the children performed brilliantly, some getting rather wet in the water race. It was also great to have the children from Busy Bees join us and they also took part in some running races. We hope that you all have a good summer and we look forward to meeting our new children in September as well as welcoming back our other pupils.

A BIG THANK YOU

Thanks to everyone who attended or contributed in any way to my

‘Wimbledon Cream Tea Extravaganza’

in aid of Guide Dog ‘Rosie’

The result was that an enjoyable afternoon in gorgeous weather was enjoyed by all who attended and most importantly the

final total raised in under three hours was: £450.00

This was quite honestly a tremendous amount to raise in such a short time and I couldn’t have done it without all the help

and support that I had from all my friends and neighbours in Southwick and even strangers who came to support me. Thanks also for all the Raffle and Tombola prizes all of which were kindly donated by Trowbridge Garden Centre, South-

wick Service Centre, Clifton Photographic and all my wonderful friends and neighbours.

Your continued support for this Annual event is much appreciated and it is with great pleasure that I can tell you that the running total for Rosie, my third guide dog, (raised in just 8 months),

is a tremendous £3228.00

(Only £1770 to go to reach the third target)

With Love from Linda xx

(PS. I have been given many items too large in size and value to put in the Raffle so I have decided to hold an ‘Auction of Allsorts’ on 8th October in the local Scout Hut. Donations of larger items you no longer need would be gratefully received. Telephone me on 01225 – 355005 with details and I will arrange collection. Thanks)

Look out for further details in the October edition of Southwick News

In memory of Gordon Dowsett

Several Southwick Parishioners have emailed us at [email protected] to express concerns about flooding. Often they have experienced flooding in the past and fear building new homes on nearby fields, that regularly flood from surface water, will only in-crease the risk of further flooding in the future. Particularly as bouts of heavy rainfall are forecast to become the norm. Many gardens in Blind Lane have been extensively flooded three times in the past four years and in July 2014, after heavy rainfall Blind Lane flooded when all the road drains overflowed. Homes in Frome Road also flooded. I contacted Wiltshire Council to raise these concerns since evidence of flooding is an important factor when Councils considers planning applications for housebuilding. I was informed that Wiltshire Council has NO record of any flooding for Blind Lane. Apparently in 2009 a Wiltshire Council Project Officer wrote to all Town and Parish councils with a map of their parish and asked them to mark the map where any flooding or drainage issues had occurred within the parish. Southwick Parish Council did not respond. Again, when flooding was particularly bad in 2013/14, Wiltshire Council contacted all parish councils to ask if any properties had suffered from flooding. They received no information from Southwick Parish council. They added that our parish council does not have a flood warden or a flood plan and have never attended the Operational Flood Work-ing Groups where they can raise concerns with Wiltshire Council and statutory agencies and it would be worth asking them to attend the meetings to raise concerns about any planning applications and flooding in their parish. There seems to be a serious lack of commu-nication! Parishioners are unaware of the importance of reporting flooding drainage or sewage issues to the parish council and the parish council seem unaware or unwilling to engage in discussion with Wiltshire Council regarding flooding issues. Consequently, Wiltshire Council has no flooding history for Southwick and when considering any housebuilding applications would not be aware that flooding is an issue, despite several instances of flooding in recent years. It was suggested that parishioners should in-form the parish council of any of the above flooding issues or concerns that arise and that cases of flooding are also reported to the Wiltshire Council Flooding App. Also if we have any evidence to show sites in flood we should start collating it now so it can be used to support any objections we may put forward should planning applications be made. Parishioners can also report flooding, past or pre-sent, to the Save our Southwick website – [email protected] where we can collate it for future reference if necessary and forward details to the Wiltshire Council Project Officer. Complacency is not an option if we want to protect our properties.

Regards

Barbara Johnson Save our Southwick Action Group

The Save Our Southwick (SoS) Action Group was formed in March 2016 in response to concerns expressed by Southwick residents to the threat of large scale housing developments outside the existing Southwick village settlement boundaries. Members of the group are: Barbara Johnson Keith Jones Graham Merrett Keith Snell Kathy Crisp John Eaton. Main areas of concern regarding large scale housing developments in Southwick are: Urbanisation and the general impact on village life Loss of arable farmland Flooding Impact on infrastructure, especially roads / increased traffic volumes, schools and services Impact on wildlife, habitats, trees & hedgerows. Of particular interest under this category is Lambrok stream which runs around

much of Southwick. A whole host of wildlife, including Egrets, Water Vole, Bats and Birds of Prey has established itself along the banks of the Lambrok. All are now under threat.

The aims of the group: To help protect Southwick from unwarranted and unwanted large scale housing developments, especially those outside of the

existing settlement boundary. To increase communication and awareness for Southwick residents regarding planning issues and potential development

threats. What we are actively doing: Progressing an online petition to our local MP, Andrew Murrison. Examining records and databases for legal precedents and restrictive covenants. Helping to protect natural wildlife habitats. Reaching out to residents of Southwick for local knowledge. Lobbying Southwick Parish Council and Wiltshire Council to oppose any large scale developments in the village. Working with the media. Our current initiative in this respect involves working with Wiltshire Times to produce an open letter to

government, requesting that the target figures for housing in Wiltshire be revised down to fairer and less damaging levels. Engaging with recognised pressure groups, such as Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE), National Farmers Union

(NFU) & Wildlife Conservation groups. Looking at ways of generating funding to support of professional and legal costs. We have also created a very informative website and Facebook pages, both of which can be found at www.saveoursouthwick.co.uk. As a community, we face a number of key milestones as we move into the second half of 2016. Probably the most important of these will be Wiltshire Council’s decision making in December with regard to Strategic Housing Land Availability (SHLAA) applications. The level of concern and support from the villagers of Southwick has been fantastic and we want this to continue. So, if anyone has any con-structive comments or ideas then by all means get in contact via the SOS Group email address at: [email protected] Many thanks for reading these words and your interest shown.
