SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER •Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, isin his 10th season as head coach and has an overall recordof 174-121, including 120-94 in conference play.•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler hasled SMSU to six winning seasons, including one 28-win sea-son, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons. •SMSU won NSIC tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 andalso won the NSIC South Division championship in both2016-2017 and 2017-18. •SMSU’s 11th head coach, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09)as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as as-sociate head coach. •Bigler’s complete bio is found on page 17.

SMSU SETS RECORDS VERSUS FORT HAYS STATE•SMSU set a program single-game record shooting 73.1 per-cent from 3-point range (19 of 26) in the win over Fort HaysState on Nov. 10.•The 19 made 3-pointers tied the single-game record whichwas set at Minnesota-Morris on Feb. 2, 2002.•The 19 made 3-pointers also set an R/A Facility single-gamerecord breaking the previous mark of 16 set four times.

MUSTANG 20-POINT GAMES •A total of five SMSU players have scored 20 or more pointsin a game during their careers, including 21 times this season. •Senior Ryan Bruggeman has 42 career 20-point games, in-cluding 16 this season, which includes scoring 30 or morepoints eight time and 40-plus points once. •Senior Taylor Schafer has nine, senior Michael Lee andsophomores Nick Dufault and Kenny Byers each have two20-point games during their careers.

SMSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT •SMSU made its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance (2001,2009, 2012, 2017, 2018) last season since moving to DivisionII in 1995-96. •SMSU is 9-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament games and hasappeared in three region championship games, while winningregion championships in both 2001 and 2009.

Brad Bigler has seen Southwest Min-nesota State University men’s basketballfrom almost every angle.

As a player, graduate assistant coach, as-sistant coach, associate head coach and nowhead coach, Bigler has been a part of themost successful period of Mustang men’sbasketball in school history the past 21 sea-sons.

The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach ofthe Year, Bigler has extended the winningtradition of Mustang men’s basketball as heenters his 10th season as head coach in2018-19. He has compiled a record of 161-110 during his tenure, including 112-84 in Northern SunIntercollegiate Conference play.

During his time as head coach, SMSU has madethree NCAA Tournament appearances, won a pair ofNSIC South Division championships and two NSIC Tour-nament championships. The Mustangs have won 19 ormore games four times, including a combined 53 victo-ries the past two seasons.

Named interim head coach on Sept. 30, 2009, Biglerwas named the permanent head coach on April 8, 2010.

The 11th head coach in program history, Bigler hasplayed a major part of SMSU’s success—both as a playerand coach—the past 21 years. Since joining the programas a student-athlete in 1997-98, SMSU has won twoNCAA region championships, two regular season confer-ence championships, two conference tournament cham-pionships, two conference division championships, whilemaking five NCAA tournament appearances.

Last season, SMSU recorded 25 victories, won itssecond straight NSIC South Division championship,played in the NSIC tournament championship game andalso advanced to the NCAA region semifinals.

The 2016-17 season saw SMSU put together one ofthe best seasons in program history. The squad tied aschool record with 28 victories, captured the program’sfirst NSIC South Division title and also won the NSIC Tour-nament championship for just the second time in teamhistory. SMSU earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA CentralRegion Tournament and advanced to the region cham-pionship game before losing to eventual national cham-pion Northwest Missouri State.

During the 2011-12 season, Bigler helped leadSMSU to one of its most successful seasons in programhistory, including a trip to the NCAA tournament. SMSUwon 19 games and finished second in the NSIC regularseason before reeling off three straight victories in theNSIC tournament to capture the program’s first-everconference tournament championship. SMSU qualifiedfor its third-ever NCAA tournament appearance, earningthe region’s No. 4 seed. SMSU was strong on both endsof the floor, leading the conference in field goal percent-age, steals and turnover margin.

During his first season as head coach in 2009-10,Bigler helped lead the Mustangs to a 17-12 overallrecord, the program’s fifth straight winning season. Theteam won eight of its last 12 games to end the season,including winning two games in the NSIC tournament

and advancing to the championship game.The team spent four weeks ranked in theNABC Top 25 poll and moved as high asNo. 11 during the season.

In 2010-11, SMSU suffered numerousclose losses and finished 12-14 overall andtied for eighth in the conference. SMSUplayed in four overtime games, includingtwo double overtime games and won justone of the four games. The squad finishedthe season losing five games by two or lesspoints and lost two other games in over-time.

In 2012-13, SMSU recorded 16 victoriesand finished tied for seventh in the expanded 16-teamconference and garnered preseason top 25 rankings bytwo national publications. The squad also appeared inthe top 10 in the first two NCAA region rankings releasedin late February.

SMSU put together another successful season in2013-14, winning 19 games, finishing sixth in the NSICregular season standings and advancing to the semifinalsof the 16-team NSIC tournament. It was just the sixthtime in program history the team had won 19 games inone season.

Despite a young squad in 2014-15, featuring justthree upperclassmen, SMSU opened the season with a9-4 record, before finishing with a 12-17 mark. In 2015-16, SMSU recorded a 13-15 overall mark, including 9-13in conference play.

Bigler began his coaching tenure at the Universityin 2003, spending two seasons as a graduate assistantbefore being elevated to full-time assistant coach priorto the 2005-06 season. He was named associate headcoach in the summer of 2006.

During his four-year tenure as a full-time assistantcoach and recruiting coordinator, SMSU racked up 80wins, had four winning seasons, captured an NSIC cham-pionship and won an NCAA region championship. As anassistant coach at SMSU, Bigler recruited and coachedone All-America, seven all-conference selections andtwo academic all-district honorees.

A native of Fort Madison, Iowa, Bigler, 38, spent fiveseasons in the Mustang men’s basketball program (1997-2002) and left as one of the winningest players in schoolhistory. A point guard, Bigler played on the 2001 NSICand North Central Region championship team that ad-vanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in Bakersfield, Calif. Heended his career playing in 118 games and currentlyranks seventh all-time in assists with 286. During hisfour-year playing career SMSU finished with a record of83-36.

Bigler began his coaching career in 2002-03, spend-ing one season as the head girls’ basketball coach atLakeview High School in Cottonwood, Minnesota.

A 2003 graduate of SMSU with a bachelor’s degreein health/physical education, Bigler earned his master’sdegree in education leadership from SMSU in 2010.

Brad and his wife, Heather, live in Marshall withtheir daughters, Taleigha and Tatum and son, Nash.
