Dear Friends:

That is a quote I heard recently from Chris Herren, a former high school standout basketball player who played professionally in the NBA and in Europe, as he recounted his lifelong struggle with addiction and

the depths to which it took him. Caught in a downward spiral of drug and alcohol abuse, Chris nearly lost everything – his career, his family and, on several occasions, his life. His story made me think of the many people in our community who are struggling with this public health crisis. Those fighting this battle are our neighbors, our families, our friends and our coworkers.

Chris’s story also made me think of how proud I am of Southwest General’s efforts to aid people facing addiction. He talked passionately about the people who saved his life - nurses, doctors, counselors, and his family who stuck by him. Those are the people we want to support right here in our community. As a community, we have a lot of our own “Chris Herrens,” and they need all of our help.

In this issue of Legacy, you will see a piece about BreakThru, our new medical withdrawal management program. The Foundation is working to raise start-up funds for this innovative program which will serve as a critical first step in saving many lives. We have also been working closely with the staff of our Oakview Behavioral Health Center. The need for behavioral health services in our area is so great that we are literally “bursting at the seams” We have added temporary trailers to house offices and to free up room in in the Oakview facility for outpatient and group meetings. This need will only grow, however, and we will be exploring other options for expanding this invaluable resource in our community.

In addition, we continue to build support for other important services and initiatives at the hospital, such as funding for our Community Van Program. I have not seen many hospitals that will provide transportation free of charge to and from its facilities, but Southwest General is truly there for our patients. Plans are also underway for our 27th annual Golf Outing to be held on August 3rd, with all proceeds benefitting areas of greatest need at Southwest. Finally, we celebrated National Doctors’ Day on March 30th, and were thrilled that many friends of Southwest General chose to send a gift to the Foundation to honor their physicians.

Thank you to everyone who believes in the importance of a community hospital providing outstanding care in your backyard. We honor you with our philanthropy report in this publication. We could not do the things we do without you. Thank you for being a part of the Southwest General family.

It is with our deepest sympathy that we recognize the passing of Almar T. “Al” Widiger, a dedicated and generous supporter of the Southwest Community Health Foundation, and our cherished friend.

Born and raised in Cicero, Illinois, Al graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He soon began a long and distinguished career in plastics research. Al met his wife, Jan, when they were both employed by the Dow Chemical Co. in Michigan, and

together they played a pivotal role in the development of a product we all know and use today, Saran Wrap. The couple relocated to Cleveland for work in 1974, and Al continued to excel in his profession until his retirement in 1989. Both before and after his retirement, Al greatly enjoyed golf, world travel, and his hobby, investments.

Beginning in the mid-1990s, Al and Jan became deeply committed to the Southwest Community Health Foundation, with a particular interest in supporting neurological care. Their longstanding generosity culminated in a key gift to Southwest General’s Touch the Future capital campaign, and the CT Scan Room in our new patient bed tower now fittingly bears their name. More recently, the Widigers established the Southwest General Senior Residency in Pharmacy, which will help to provide experiential education for pharmacy students and promote exceptional transitions of care at Southwest General.

In addition to supporting our hospital, the Widigers also created scholarships at several universities and community colleges to assist students with financial need. On behalf of every community and individual which he touched, we thank Al for his incredible sense of compassion and philanthropy. He will be greatly missed.

New Program at Southwest General Brings Hope and Healing to those Facing Addiction

Watch the news or pick up the newspaper and what do you see? It is an almost daily reminder of the epidemic we are dealing with in Northeast Ohio. In our community, the medical examiner’s office attributed more than 500 deaths in

2016 to drug overdoses, with opioids claiming the lion’s share. Nationwide, the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are equally alarming, and Ohio is at the epicenter of this medical problem.The director of the CDC has stated that “Urgent action is needed to help health care providers treat pain safely and treat opioid use disorder effectively.” There are three priorities identified by the CDC, one of which is expanding Medication-Assisted Treatment. To answer that call right here in our community, Southwest General is pleased to introduce BreakThru – Medical Withdrawal Management Service.This new program at Southwest General is designed for individuals who are in imminent or active early withdrawal from alcohol or drug abuse. The initial stages of withdrawal are considered the most difficult. Symptoms can include severe anxiety, pain, distress and other potentially life-threatening complications.

WITH THE BREAKTHRU SERVICE:• We address the needs of patients seeking to take the first

step toward breaking the cycle of alcohol and drug abuse• Patients are served on the medical/surgical floor, where

the physical symptoms of the withdrawal process are medically supervised to ensure safety, comfort and confidentiality.

• Doctors and nurses monitor patients’ status, administer medications to ease symptoms and ensure their safety and comfort

• The average length of stay is about three days, and the service assists patients entering into the next phase of their recovery after discharge from the hospital.

One of the most innovative aspects of the BreakThru program focuses on a strategic collaboration between Southwest General and community referral partners. A personalized aftercare discharge plan is established for each patient, and BreakThru staff members monitor them at regular intervals over a one year period to determine level of remission, sobriety and engagement in treatment. This promotes successful recovery along the entire continuum of care.

Although Southwest General projects that the BreakThru program will become self-sustaining over time, the Southwest Community Health Foundation is actively searching for funding partners to provide essential support for first-year costs. Southwest Community Health Foundation’s 2016 Philanthropy Report

As the landscape of modern health care shifts, the role of philanthropic support within hospitals becomes increasingly vital to providing continuous quality care. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of our

benefactors, the Southwest Community Health Foundation continues to grow in our mission to support the remarkable work of Southwest General.

In 2016, the Foundation attained $1.6 million in charitable donations through special events, grant funding, major gifts, our annual campaign and capital campaign commitments. This incredible support is a testament to the strength and dedication of our community, and makes an important difference in the lives of Southwest General patients and their families.

On April 23, 2016, more than 480 guests experienced An Enchanted Evening in Bollywood at the Southwest Community Health Foundation’s bi-annual Tiara ball. Held at the historic Cleveland Public Auditorium, the event brought the sights and sounds of India to downtown Cleveland. In total, Tiara 2016 raised more than $405,000 in gross proceeds to support the Southwest Community Health Foundation Endowment Fund.

Later, on August 4, more than 150 sponsors, friends and volunteers gathered at Columbia Hills Golf and Swim Club for a beautiful day of golf and festivities. The Southwest Community Health Foundation’s 26th Annual Golf Outing raised more than $95,000 to help areas of greatest need at Southwest General.

Outside of events, the Foundation’s Caring Communities Annual Campaign also saw great success in 2016. More than 430 individuals made gifts to Caring Communities, raising over $140,000 to help purchase state-of-the art equipment and provide continued training for Southwest General staff. This represents a 115% increase in the total funds raised by this annual campaign compared to just five years prior.

Finally, the Foundation was the recipient of a very special gift of $150,000 from the Harding Family Charitable Trust to acquire a SimMan® full-bodied patient simulator. A realistic, full-body, wireless patient simulation mannequin, the SimMan will allow us to provide sophisticated medical training to staff at Southwest General and beyond.

We remain deeply grateful to the hundreds of patients, partners, employees, physicians, foundations and businesses that chose to make an important difference in 2016, right her in our own community. We are proud to be your hospital, and we thank you for your support.
