Again we remind all that if you hear or see something suspicious to make a call to the police. Unless it is an emergency do not call 000, but you can call Crimestoppers, the Gympie Station or Police Link, all numbers are on page 2 of this newsletter. Do you have a question to ask Sgt Curran on police related matters or a question for Cr Curran on council related matters? Then come along to the meetings and meet Mick. The Southside NHW committee will be delivering house plaques over time with the newsletter. If you receive a plaque and don’t want it could you please return it to the Administration Office of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. These plaques can be attached with screws or glue (Liquid Nails) to your letterbox, fence or house. If you would like a new plaque please contact the Deputy Co-ordinator (see below) to arrange pick up. We look forward to seeing you at our meetings . NOTE: A reminder to all zone and block co-ordinators if you are going to away or unable for some reason to do your deliveries could you give the newsletter co-ordinator a call so she can make other arrangements to have your newsletters delivered to the householders in your area on time. Please contact the newsletter co-ordinator Marj Leitch on 5482 1081. Thank you!

From the Editor: Welcome neighbours, to the March Edition of the newsletter for 2013.

It was sad on Monday night at the meeting to hear Sgt Mick Curran report, that at the moment, we seem to be having a spate of Break and Enters occurring in the Southside area. Again we remind all that if you hear or see something suspicious to make a call to the police. These plaques can be attached with screws or glue (Liquid Nails) to your letterbox, fence or house.

If you would like a new plaque please contact the Deputy Co-ordinator (see below) to arrange pick up.

MY POLICE GYMPIE

One of the most constructive methods of policing is the new blog, mypolice.qld.gov.au/gympie, that can be viewed to know what is going on in the community both here and elsewhere. The Co-ordinator is Senior Constable Llew O’Brien (the District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator) and you can contact him if you have something to add to the blog on 5480 1410. This blog was used extensively during the floods, reporting on road closures and accidents etc. It will have the latest crime incident in the area and it may also be asking the public for information on a crime or person/s caught on camera during a crime. Subscription to this blog is as easy as going to the above site and clicking on the subscribe button and the blog will be automatically sent to your computer when an incident occurs.

HOW DOES CRIME STOPPERS WORK? Crime Stoppers is a telephone hotline for information about any criminal activity.

You, the caller need not give your name and are known only by a code number. Remaining anonymous allow you to overcome any fear of involvement or retaliation.

Your call is not recorded or taped. Only you know who gave the information—you are not identified in any way.

If an arrest follows, you may be eligible to claim a reward of up to $1 000.

Even when collecting a reward you remain anonymous!

Reward are paid for from monies raised from the general and business communities.

Dog Walkers please take note: We know that it is a great way to keep fit and healthy for both yourself and your pet and we respect your right to walk your friends whenever and wherever you like. All we ask is that you consider the suggestion of taking a plastic bag with you which will enable you to clean up and dispose of the waste left by your pet and keep our streets clean and tidy.

Did you know…?

Many people are now having solar panels fitted to the rooves of their homes; however they may not be covered by their current insurance policies. Any damage caused to the panels through a storm may not be covered as the panels are an addition to the house and if not nominated, are NOT COVERED. With the pending storm season, a quick phone call may save thousands of $$$ should the unfortunate happen. Mobile devices – with more and more children owning smart phones and a flourishing market for tablet devices, we can be sure that the internet will increasingly be accessed from anywhere and everywhere. This means we have to ensure our children and young people understand the challenges they may face and how they can overcome them, as they will likely meet these challenges away from the supervision of their parents. We must continue to discuss the ethical use of technology, provide encouragement and support for children and young people.

School holidays are nearly here again. We all need to take extra care with security if going away, even for a short time. Remember to: Lock all doors and secure windows Tell a trusted neighbour of leaving and

returning dates Ask them to collect any junk mail left in

the letterbox Ask them to check around your house

regularly Cancel newspaper deliveries Have mail held at post office Leave on an interior light or put in a

timer for lights to come on and go off Make you home look ‘lived in’ at all

times

These are just a few simple things you can do to keep your home and property safe.

When driving over the holidays remember to drive with care and remember the police will be out and about.

Enjoy your holidays and return safe and sound.
