Lord Street Boulevard

Page 5: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

Walk a gentle mile along Lord Street and you’ll find yourself at the heart of Southport’s famous shopping centre. A charming Victorian boulevard with canopied shops framed by leafy gardens and fountains, Lord Street has been the town’s most famous landmark for over a century. Specialist shops and designer boutiques nestle amongst tea rooms, cafes and restaurants, many with outdoor dining areas creating a continental feel for visitors.

Lord Street is also home to Wayfarers Arcade with its stunning glass-domed roof and beautiful period decor – over 30 exclusive stores can be found here, along with a cafe and restaurant where you can sit and watch the world go by. And if you’re interested in antiques and collectables, then the Royal Arcade at the southern end of Lord Street is where you need to be!

Page 7: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

There’s more retail therapy on offer in the town centre so why not start at Chapel Street which is adjacent to Lord Street and linked by Cambridge Walks and Cambridge Arcade. Chapel Street is where you’ll find high street brands and national names – it’s also fully pedestrianised so no need to worry about the traffic! You’ll also find Marble Place on Chapel Street so plenty of undercover shopping, and Wesley Street with its pretty pastel coloured shop fronts and village style shopping is just a minute’s walk away from here too. Southport’s Market Quarter has niche shops and an

Indoor Market Hall packed with bargains – again, all only a minute’s walk from both Lord Street and Chapel Street.

Just by the sea but still within easy walking distance of the town centre is Ocean Plaza with a great mix of retail and leisure. There’s a good selection of brand name shops and restaurants as well as a multiplex cinema, hotel and Premier Bowl and Laser – plus over 1200 parking spaces. Five minutes’ walk from Southport train station is C12 Retail Park with stores offering everything from fashion to garden furniture.

Have an ‘eventful’ time

No matter what month of the year, there’s always something to look forward to in Southport from flowers to food and planes to pyrotechnics – so why not plan your visit to the town to coincide with one of them?

Brighten up a gloomy winter’s day by enjoying some great jazz from a variety of artists at Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend. For the ‘fashionistas’ out there, March sees the Southport Fashion Show trending with all the latest must haves straight from the catwalk and then the most famous steeplechase in the world comes to Aintree in April so don’t forget

to make a date in your diary for the Crabbie’s Grand National – it’s a great event even if you’re not a serious punter!

There’ll be dancing in the streets in May when the Southport Jazz Festival swings back into town with gigs across the town centre – many of which are free! Then at the end of the month, the Southport Food & Drink Festival returns to Victoria Park for three days of mouth wateringly good fun with live cooking demonstrations, a food village and much more – and it’s free entry for all the family to enjoy!

8

Page 9: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

Victoria Park is also home to the Woodvale Rally which takes place over two action packed days in June. Later in the month, Southport will mark the British Armed Forces Day, honouring both the fallen and veterans of conflict over the years.

August brings four glorious days of outdoor living with the Southport Flower Show once again taking place in Victoria Park. Exquisite floral displays and stunning gardens stand side by side with a food hall, craft marquee, family entertainment and much more!

From Spitfires & sparklers to spooks & Santa

It’s time to look to the skies over the seafront in September when Southport Air Show thrills the crowds once more. There are two days of outstanding aerial displays and a spectacular Air Show Village packed with stalls, simulators and model aircraft.

The skies have it again in October when Victoria Park plays host to the British Musical Fireworks Championship. Over three nights, top pyrotechnic teams from around the country will battle it out for the prestigious title of UK Champion, choreographing their displays to all genres of music. And don’t forget the Southport Comedy Festival which also takes place in October – ten days of side splitting comedy in venues across the town.

This Halloween Southport turns into Spookport with lots of scary, but family friendly events across the town and at Pleasureland Amusement Park... be afraid, be very afraid!

There’s another evening of fireworks in November when the Hesketh Round Table Fireworks Display welcomes thousands of spectators to Victoria Park whilst raising money for worthy causes. And there’ll be plenty of seasonal fun to look forward to in the run up to Christmas so keep an eye on visitsouthport.com to make sure you don’t miss out!

Thrills and spills!

Southport has a great choice of things to do no matter what the weather – or your age!

Southport’s Grade ll listed Pier is the oldest iron pier in the country - and the second longest, so if you’re feeling energetic, enjoy the fresh air and take a walk along to the Pavilion. Or, if you fancy a more leisurely trip, let the pier tram or road train take the strain. The Pavilion has a collection of traditional ‘penny-in-the-slot’ machines as well as a licensed cafe and small exhibition on Southport’s history.

Silcock’s Funland & Carousel have provided a warm welcome to visitors to Southport for generations. The beautifully painted Carousel is over 100 years old and after a ride on a hobby horse, why not treat yourself to fish and chips or an ice cream – or play the latest video and arcade games.

Southport’s Pleasureland is a free admission park with a great mix of rides and amusements for all the family. Just across the road from Pleasureland is Dunes Splash World, Southport’s

12

Thrills and spills!

all weather water park so no matter what the weather, it’ll be a constant 84 degrees Fahrenheit inside! There are flumes, raft rides, bubble spa and a poolside cafe where parents can stay dry and watch their children enjoying themselves.

For even more attractions, Ocean Plaza is home to a Vue multi-screen cinema, Playtown children’s play area and Premier Bowl & Laser – all on Southport’s sea-front but still only a few minutes’ walk away from the town centre!

a ‘grand’day out

Southport’s Marine Lake has lots of water based activities to keep the whole family entertained so why not hire out a boat, get your thrills on one of the power boats or take it more gently on one of the swan pedalos. Chugging alongside the edge of the lake is the Miniature Lakeside Railway – an enchanting way to see the sights!

Just between the Promenade and the Marine Lake lies Kings Gardens, restored to its former glory and home to the Model Railway Village. The stunning Venetian Bridge spans the lake and the Victorian shelters offer a welcome resting

place for the tired tourist! The highlight of the gardens for families though, has to be the brand new Children’s Playground which is suitable for children of all ages – don’t forget to take your bucket and spade as there’s a sandpit in there too!

WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is just a few miles out of town and perfect for a day trip where wilderness and family friendliness combine. There’s plenty to see and do, inside and out all year round with otters, beavers, kingfishers, flamingos, pink-footed geese and whooper swans. Stroll along the peaceful nature trail and watch birds from the

14

a ‘grand’day out

shelter of the hides or in the summer, take to the water on a canoe safari or guided boat tour for some awe-inspiring natural encounters.

Travel just a few minutes from Martin Mere and you’ll come to Windmill Animal Farm where you can experience the day to day running of a working farm and see a variety of farmyard animals including lambs, goats and pigs. The farm also has three play areas, a playbarn and pedal tractors – a fun way for the youngsters to get around.

Farmer Ted’s is around 5 miles to the

south of the town and is a popular family attraction with soft play zones, a relaxation area, cafeteria and farm animals for the children to meet. On October evenings things get a little bit scary when Farmer Ted’s transforms into Farmaggedon – a Halloween experience that’s definitely not for the fainthearted!

For those who fancy cycling around Southport and its attractions, the town has a great cycle hire scheme operating from Southport train station and the Eco Visitor Centre – you can pick up cycle route maps from these points too so that you can plan your route.

15visitsouthport.com

Page 16: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

At the north end of a 22 mile stretch of coastline lies Southport Beach, home to Southport’s iconic iron pier and the annual Southport Air Show. Peer at the magnificent coastal views through the seaside telescopes, enjoy building sandcastles, flying kites or why not tuck into a family picnic on the beach.

A little further down the coast is Ainsdale Beach, Southport’s main bathing beach with RNLI Lifeguards patrolling in the summer months. Miles of scenic sand dunes offer the perfect place to unwind as you enjoy some of the area’s most beautiful coastline.

Beach Life

16

Page 17: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

A ten minute drive from Ainsdale is Lifeboat Road, Formby’s main beach. A backdrop of dunes and pinewoods with ample car parking make it a great place for families to spend some time. The ever helpful RNLI Lifeguards are present on the beach during the summer holidays.

Crosby Coastal Park has a number of scenic pathways, a children’s play area and a marine lake. Here, you’ll also find Crosby Lakeside Activity Centre where

you can take part in a variety of water sports, use the gym facilities or unwind in the Lakeside Bar & Bistro with a drink and tasty meal.

The Southport and Sefton coast is a favourite area for walkers, ramblers and cyclists and the Sefton Walking and Cycling Guide, available to download from visitsouthport.com is a handy brochure packed full of local walking and cycling routes.

17visitsouthport.com

Page 18: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

Surrounding Southport are miles of beautiful countryside, sand dunes and pinewoods. The area is home to a wide range of flora and fauna including endangered species like the endearing Red Squirrel and the Natterjack Toad.

To the north of Southport, the sand dunes give way to the marshes of the Ribble Estuary, an internationally important site for water birds in the winter months. The Ribble Marshes National Nature Reserve and the RSPB’s Marshside Nature Reserve are the gateway to the estuary and well

known for their spectacular displays of waterfowl.

South of Southport the Ainsdale and Birkdale Sandhills Local Nature Reserve is adjacent to the bathing beach and the Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve is only ten minutes’ drive from the town centre. More endangered creatures can be seen here, including the shy Sand Lizard, the Dark Green Fritillary butterfly and many more.

The Sands Lake Nature Trail with its boardwalk access is also situated nearby,

18

Page 19: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

about 15 minutes south of Southport by car, and is another area of natural beauty on the coast.

Lifeboat Road Formby with its excellent car parking and disabled access to the beach is ideal for families and those in search of coastal wildlife. Wide stretches of beach with amazing numbers of wading birds during the winter are a treat for the birdwatcher, along with Red Squirrels in the pinewoods and a landscape dominated by the high sand dunes of the adjacent Ravensmeols Dunes Local Nature Reserve.

The National Trust site at Freshfield adjoins this area to the north, again with beach, dunes and the possibility you may catch a glimpse of the Red Squirrel here too.

Back in the centre of Southport is the Queen’s Jubilee Nature Trail – a wildlife haven in the town and just across the road from the Eco Visitor Centre which is an award winning building constructed with environmentally friendly materials. Both Southport’s secure coach park and park & ride service operate from the Eco Visitor Centre too.

Blooming Lovely

Southport is well known for its beautiful parks and gardens, from the Victorian splendour of the Botanic Gardens to those along Lord Street in the town centre.

The historic village of Churchtown, mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book, is home to The Botanic Gardens.

Originally opened in 1874 these beautiful Victorian gardens are bursting with colourful floral displays. Winding through the park is the garden’s lake and a multitude of pathways. There’s also a Victorian fernery, aviary, children’s play area, gift shop and café, so there’s plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Page 21: Southport Visitor Guide 2015

21visitsouthport.com

Hesketh Park is even closer to the town centre and is the largest park in Southport as well as being home to one of the UK’s few remaining floral clocks. Feed the ducks on the lake and admire the variety of unique plants and flowers in the restored Victorian conservatory. There’s also a network of pathways running through ornamental gardens, a children’s play area, mini golf course and café.

Victoria Park, home to the Southport Flower Show, Southport Food & Drink Festival, British Musical Fireworks Championship and many other events,

is just a few minutes walk from Lord Street. There are acres of open lawn perfect for ball games and family fun. There’s also a children’s play area, model car racing track and at the edge of the park a model boating lake.

Southport’s historic Lord Street is not only known for its Victorian canopied shops but also for its beautiful, landscaped gardens. They’re home to a number of fountains, water features and seated areas, making it the ideal spot to relax or have a picnic.

Back in the town centre is the Little Theatre on Hoghton Street. It has an

extensive programme of plays and performances and is home to many of the area’s amateur dramatic groups.

For a quintessentially British attraction, look no further than Southport’s British Lawnmower Museum, recently extended and voted one of the top ten unusual museums to visit in the world! Southport has a lot to offer sports fans – world-class golf courses, superb sailing facilities and Aintree, one of the world’s most famous racecourses and home of The Crabbies Grand National, is also close by.

Southport has an excellent reputation amongst both international and domestic golfers for the quality of its links courses and it lies right at the heart of England’s Golf Coast. There are 15 top clubs no more than an hour’s drive from the town, six of which are less than half an hour away – so less time on the motorway and more time on the fairway. Royal Birkdale, just a few minutes’ drive from the town centre, has been ranked as England’s

top golf course and justifiably so after hosting The Open Championship on nine occasions and hosting it again in 2017. Hillside, Hesketh, Southport & Ainsdale, Formby and West Lancashire are all excellent courses which are used as Open qualifying courses as well as hosting tournaments in their own right. There’s plenty of accommodation in and around Southport too, making it the ideal base for your golfing trip. Hotels, Guest Accommodation and Self Catering Accommodation Rating System Across a number of the accommodation advertisements within this guide, you’ll notice ratings displayed - these have been awarded by

Visit Britain or the AA. Hotels that opt into this scheme are given a rating from one to five stars - the more stars, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and level of services provided. Guest Accommodation covers a wide variety of serviced accommodation, including guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, inns and farmhouses. These establishments are also rated from one to five stars, as too are Self Catering properties. Progressively higher levels of quality and customer care must be provided for each of the one to five star ratings. The ratings are your sign of the National Quality Assurance Standards, giving you the confidence to book the accommodation that best meets your needs and expectations.
