We offered a hands-on session with e-book readers, a series of 6 ignite presentations and a poster session. “Confluence: Communicate, Collaborate & Create” was the theme of our 2011 SEAALL Annual Meeting and indeed we did! Thanks to the hard work of the Pamela Melton and the members of the Local Arrangements Committee as well as the Program Committee, this year’s SEAALL meeting was a resounding success.

Confluence is defined as a gathering, flowing or meeting together at one point or juncture. Columbia, SC was an ideal venue for our confluence. Literally, Columbia is located at the confluence of two rivers. Figuratively, we all merged together to form a confluence from diverse geographic locations, types of libraries and varied job responsibilities.

We kicked off our confluence with a well-attended pre-conference institute discussing the effectiveness of le-gal research and writing instruction. Academic librarians, law firm and court librarians as well as recent law graduates all presented their perspective on legal research and writing instruction. Participants learned what legal employers think about the skills of recent graduates. Law students and alumni described their recent experiences with legal research. The institute ended with a panel discussion of teaching cost effective legal research methods.

At Thursday evening’s opening reception, we enjoyed delightful steel drum music, good food and festive cama-raderie. The whacky tropic shirt contest provided lots of laughter. Yet over the buzz of conversation, you could still hear phrases like e-books, institutional repositories and budget woes.

Friday morning, we began with our SEAALL business meeting and then jumped right into our educational pro-grams. We covered topics such as all-digital libraries, succession planning, DMCA exceptions, special collec-tion preservation and authentication of digital documents. ter what type of library you work in, our problems and experiences are universal.

On Saturday, we departed with strong thunderstorms brewing. Although the weather was daunting, we all were fortified with new ideas, professional enthusiasm and a positive outlook.

In closing, I would like to once again extend a huge thanks to the many individuals who contributed to the suc-cess of the 2011 Annual Meeting. I look forward to continuing to work with you all (or should I say y’all since this is SEAALL, after all?) during the upcoming year. It is true what they say…SEAALL is the best chapter in AALL and that can be directly attributed to its hard-working membership.

I hope to see you in Philly. The SEAALL business meeting will be at its traditional day and time, July 25, Monday night at 5:30 p.m. followed by our social reception at 6:30. You won’t want to miss it. We will have a yummy menu that includes chicken Waldorf salad tarts, vegetable spring rolls, spanakopita and more.
