FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT ROGER STUMPF Three months have passed since the beginning of this crisis and unfortu-nately we are still living in uncertain times. People are anxious to get back to normalcy. The virus is not gone, we have managed to slow its progress but it just takes one look at Ford County Kansas to see what can happen if we allow our impatience for normalcy distract us from our responsibility to keep ourselves and those around us safe.

The uncertainty we are living under dictates every decision at USD 306, in-fluences every meeting, and causes us to plan multiple contingencies for everything we do. We can recommend people wear masks while out, but what does that look like in August when we hope to resume classes? What does social distancing look like on a bus? Will we even be allowed to come back into the building or will we need to continue with distance learning? These are not questions that I can answer at this time. The conditions on the ground will dictate how we proceed. Keeping our students safe is what keeps school administrators up at night.

We have every hope of starting school in August according to the published calendar, welcoming everyone as they stream off the buses and into classes with their friends and enthusiastic teachers so eager to get back to busi-ness. I just can’t promise any of it.

There are two main thoughts that I would like to convey about school as it has been this quarter, and controlling the outbreak moving forward. First, please do not mistake what happened in the fourth quarter as normal dis-tance learning. Teachers were given essentially one week to design a learn-ing experience focused as much on the student’s well being as their learn-ing. Lessons were scaled back and allowances made. This was not a good example of what a virtual school looks like, nor will it be representative of what distance learning might be in the fall should we be forced back into that position.

Secondly, it is everyone’s responsibility to help control the outbreak moving forward. One of the many things we must consider is the possibility of a stu-dent or teacher testing positive after school restarts. The challenge we will face is that students get sick all the time under normal school conditions. As many of the symptoms mirror the common flu, it will become very difficult to distinguish when a child has an everyday illness, or Covid. We have pub-lished guidelines for when you should keep your child home from school and every year we have children arrive at school having thrown up or registered a fever within hours of loading the bus. The stakes are now higher. It is im-perative that students and adults monitor their health, follow the guidelines, and communicate with the school openly about their condition. Nobody wants to be in this position again in the fall with losing class time and activi-ties, but it is a real possibility. Saline County has done a fantastic job of lim-iting the spread, and with care and commitment we will have a normal school year in 20-21.

We are in this together, we are Southeast.
