The View From My Tent….
This is my my favorite time of year -- the start of a new school year--full of hope and excitement for children and parents. It is also the start of a new Scouting program year and during the next 60 days more youths and parents will
join Scouting then the entire rest of the year.
These new Scouts and parents join Scouting with the high expectation that their son will someday become an Eagle Scout and then use those skills learned in Scouting to improve our world. This dream does come true for many young
people and parents but we need to do a few things now to ensure this successful lifetime outcome.
As you recruit new boys and new parents into your Scouting unit please make sure the following things happen:
That every new family leaves the joining meeting knowing when and where the first regular meeting is going to take place, and that they have the name and phone number of their son’s leader.
Make sure if they miss the first meeting someone calls and follows up with them to ensure they successfully become engaged with Scouting.
Unfortunately about 10% of all new boys who join Scouting never attend a meeting because of poor communications
and a lack of follow-up.
Please task a small group of adults in your unit with the responsibility of being the welcoming committee and make
sure every new family gets a strong start in their Scouting adventure.
Thank you for all you do for Scouting!
Sincerely,
John Beauregard Scout Executive & CEO
