Parents and Students,

June is here and soon the graduating class of 2012 will be walking across the stage. Commencement ceremonies always mark the end of one journey and the beginning of another. On behalf of the faculty and staff at Waukesha South High School, I want to thank our seniors for their contributions. Your leadership, commitment and dedication have been crucial to our success as a school. We are very proud of our graduates and want to wish them well as they look to the future with hope and optimism. We’re certain that they will be prepared to face the demands of a rapidly changing world.

On a personal note, this will be a very special commencement ceremony for me as it will be my last as Principal at Waukesha South High School. As many already know, I have accepted an offer to become the next principal at Franklin High School. The decision was very diffi cult considering that the vast majority of my professional career has been spent at South High school severing as both a teacher and an administrator. The primary reason for the move is the personal desire to be closer to family in the Franklin area. I will greatly appreciate all of the wonderful relationships established over the years.

Our graduation ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 in the South High School Fieldhouse. Project graduation will be held the same evening beginning at 8:00 p.m. Traditionally, this has been a fun and exciting evening for graduates. It provides a last chance to be with classmates in celebration of this great accomplishment. Our graduating seniors went through a rehearsal on the morning of Friday, June 1 which was followed by a senior picnic in the afternoon.

This is also the time of year when students are preparing for their upcoming fi nal exams. The best advice is to plan your study time in advance and stick to it. A schedule of fi nal exam times can be found on page 2. It is our hope that everyone has an enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

2013 Senior Class - Smile! Senior Picture DeadlineParents, your junior student’s fi nal year of high school looms just around the corner. Along with it, there are numerous decisions and choices, some of which you need to make soon.

One such decision concerns a senior picture. To ensure that a 2013 senior picture is included in the yearbook, it is advisable to make a studio appointment with a local photographer soon. Pictures must be taken over the summer to allow studios the necessary time for processing and delivery. After selecting a desirable proof, it usually takes four or fi ve weeks to fi nish the order. Other parents are scheduling studio appointments already; thus, the longer you wait, the more diffi cult it will be for you to arrange a sitting convenient for you.

A professional picture is not required. However, there are certain specifi cs that must be met in order to be included in the yearbook:

Vertical pictureHead and shoulders or head to waist poses only. Full length pictures make the senior so much smaller than the other students pictured on the page.No animals. No baseball caps, dark glasses, or objects that cover the face.No cleavage or midriffs. No strapless tops.A hard copy of the picture is required. A wallet size or 4x6 is preferred.

If you select a professional photographer, it is important to verify that the studio can guarantee to fi nish pictures before the October 15th yearbook deadline. Due to yearbook publisher deadlines, senior pictures cannot be accepted after October 15th. Each senior electing to submit a portrait in the yearbook

assumes the personal responsibility of doing so on time. Pictures should be submitted to Mrs. Wagner in room 243.

If there are any questions concerning senior pictures, please contact Mrs. Amanda Wagner at [email protected] or at 970–3835.

If there is a school closing, it will be posted on the activity/athletic telephone line. Please call 970-3700 and press #4 for the activity/athletic line. Updated information will be posted as soon as possible after a school closing decision has been made.

Financial StatementsStudent fi nancial statements were mailed out to families on October 27, 2011 for all students that currently showed a balance. These statements are mailed out once a year. Parents can view their current balance anytime by logging in to Parent Connect. Lost or damaged textbook fees and library fi nes are not included in this statement.

The media center has their own system for fi nes and fees. Media center statements were attached to the student fi nancial statements for any student that currently had an obligation of over $5.00. If the student owed under $5.00, the student was hand delivered a statement on Tuesday, November 1 in their English class. All future media center obligation notices will be given directly to the student as media center statements are mailed home only once a year.

Reward Your Schools - Best BuyBest Buy has put together a Reward Zone Program for Schools that allows customers to donate their Reward Zone points to local schools. The next

time you are making a purchase at Best Buy, be sure to ask them to credit Waukesha South High School with the Reward Zone points. Two percent of the purchase will be credited to Waukesha South High School.

Daily AnnouncementsAnnouncements will be read by staff or students over the sound system at the beginning of third hour.

Announcements will also be posted in the main offi ce window and on the Waukesha South High School web site.

www.waukeshasouth.com

Student ID’sThis is just a reminder to the student body that your student ID’s will get you into a South home athletic event during the school year. You will need to show your student ID to the ticket takers at any Waukesha South athletic event. Students also need to have their ID card to check into the Attendance area or to go to the library.

Reporting an Absence/Release for an AppointmentIf your student is too sick to come to school, please call our attendance hotline at 970-3716 to report their absence. Please speak slowly and clearly to ensure that your child’s attendance is recorded properly.

We are asking parents to please try to remember your child’s physician, dental, or other appointments in the morning and have your student bring a letter indicating the appointment to the attendance offi ce before the school day begins. This will allow us time to write up a pass for your student. Phone calls to the attendance offi ce to have your student removed from class due to a scheduled appointment should only be made if the appointment is a last minute scheduling. Using this process will alleviate interruption to classroom instruction.

If parents have concerns regarding their child’s attendance, they are encouraged to contact Mrs. Wiegert in the Attendance Offi ce at 970-3716 or contact their student’s assistant principal.

MISSION STATEMENTLearning, Growing, Succeeding

Every Person, Every Day

June 2012

Families of the School District of Waukesha High School Learning Community,

Our goal is to provide an environment in which all students will learn to the best of their ability. This communication is to inform you about an intervention period, Academic Options, that will be instituted next school year at the beginning of the school day, Academic Options. Academic Options will be a great opportunity for students to receive added assistance in Math and Literacy.

Based on student Mathematics and Reading performance on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment and the ACT (EPAS) Explore and PLAN data, students will be assigned to a mandatory intervention time.

Academic Options will be facilitated by highly qualifi ed teachers as well as student tutors. Attendance will be required. Once a student demonstrates consistent profi ciency in all areas of Math and Reading, they will not be required to attend. We are predominantly focusing on targeted ninth and tenth graders only. Over time, we look to extend opportunities to all grade levels with not only intervention opportunities but enrichment, extension opportunities as well. Studentsmay be also added throughout the course of the school year.

Some of the benefi ts of this class will be:Small student to teacher ratioThe development of specifi c skills related to career and college readinessDaily reading and math workshops to build skillsImprovement of MAP scores in Reading and Language Arts and MathImprovement of academic classroom gradesThe attainment of confi dence and academic abilityOn-going communication to monitor progress (parent/student/teacher)

We are excited to be able to provide this intervention for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's administrator or guidance counselor.

Thank you in advance for your continued support of our efforts to provide an academically rich learning environment for all students.

Sincerely,

Tabia NicholasDirector of High School Education

Schedule Changes for ALL StudentsStudents who have failed or are likely to fail a required class during the year are to contact their counselor to make the necessary schedule change for next year. Students will either need to register for summer school or be sure that the class is in their schedule for next year. Placement in classes that students have failed is not always possible due to large class sizes. This is particularly critical for “to-be” seniors! Also, if a student has registered for a class requiring a prerequisite and has failed the prerequisite class, the student’s schedule will need to be changed. The sooner the student makes the change, the better the chance to get an alternate class choice.

It is the student's responsibility to make an appointment with his/her guidance counselor to make sure that all of the necessary classes are in place to graduate. It is encouraged that students “track your progress from year to year.” Guidance counselors are available on a limited basis immediately at the end of the school year and the week before classes begin in the fall. The guidance counselors do not work at South throughout the summer months.

Any schedule changes for the 2012-2013 school year should be made before students leave for the summer.

If there is a teacher who you would like to get a letter of recommendation from for college applications, now is the time! We never know which teachers will return to South in the fall and often teachers have more time now to write letters than at the start of the school year. Remember to always send a thank you card for someone who takes the time to write you a letter.

Sensenbrenner in Brookfi eld (120 Bishops Way - 262-784-1111) for an application.

Students must be a US citizen, a high school graduate by 7/1/13, live in the 5th congressional district of Wisconsin, be unmarried, not have any children, and be between 17 and 21 years of age. Applications will be accepted through October 19, 2012.

Academy Day in Oshkosh is on September 15. Students get a chance to meet with representatives from all service academies. In addition to completing the nomination application, it is also necessary for you to open a pre-candidate fi le with each of the academies in which you are interested. Please contact your representative if you are interested in this opportunity.

Changes Coming Next year to ACT/SAT SecurityWe are sure we will hear more about this, but both ACT and SAT will be changing some of their registration policies beginning next fall. Students will have to submit photos of themselves when they sign up for the college entrance exams. A copy of the photo will be printed on the admission ticket and mailed to each student. It will also appear on the test site roster.

Advantages to Taking the ACT During Your Junior Year (from www.ACT.org)

You've probably completed the coursework corresponding to the test material. You'll have your test scores and other information in time to infl uence your senior year. (For example, you may decide to take an additional class in an area in which your test score was low.) Colleges will know of your interests and have your scores in time to contact you during the summer before your senior year, when many of them are sending information about admissions, course placement, scholarships, and special programs to prospective students. You'll have information about yourself and the schools you're interested in prior to your campus visits, making your visits more focused. You'll have the opportunity to retest if you feel your scores don't accurately refl ect your ability. ACT research shows that of the students who took the ACT more than once:

55% increased their composite score 22% had no change in their composite score

23% decreased their composite score
