Many of the activities were teamwork centred and mainly focused on the dynamics of an SRC. There were many flexi workshops to help us understand and learn the different roles and aspects of a school leadership team. The success of the conference will better the communication between schools in our region. This conference raised awareness and will help us improve our communication skills, school action plans and outlook on the SRC.  We encourage more SRC members and future leaders to attend these conferences as they provide many opportunities and pathways to a leadership position and open communication between schools across the region. The “Big Idea” that we decided on at the conference is Week GR8 which will focus on student wellbeing and the inclusiveness of the school. We will be holding next term to boost school spirit and inclusiveness. Maeve Sparrow The Regional SRC conference 2018 was located at Murrumbateman. It was a great experience that many more people should go to next year. We did many team based activities and we came up with a “Big Idea“ for all schools to implement for when we return to our schools. This years “Big Idea“ was to do a GR8 Week. It’s where every day of the week a new topic like “Mental Health Monday”, “Team Work Tuesday” or “World Wide Wednesday”. We would love to have more and more students to participate in next year’s conference. Jonny Gleeson MAN OF STEEL Tickets available from DRTCC

Principal’s MessageWe recently received very sad news that Aaron Argent who taught PDHPE at South Campus last year, was involved in a motorbike accident and sadly lost his life. This news was a shock to the whole school community and I would like to thank the counselling team and NALAG for their support to help staff and students in handling their grief on this sad occasion. As a sign of respect many students have been wearing coloured socks in memory of this wonderful young teacher. We will be planting a tree with a memorial plaque to commemorate his short but influential time in our school.

This week we had international motivational speaker Preston Pollard give a whole school presentation and then separate workshops with Year 9 and Year 10. The students were encouraged by Preston’s story to dream big, take advantage of opportunities and follow their passions. Accompanying Preston was author and coach Kerrie Phipps, who also offered advice and support for the students. We thank them both for their time and words of inspiration.

Congratulations to our debating team for their continued success and to our many Eisteddfod entrants who have worked hard on their performances. We hope that all your effort is rewarded with notable commendation. A special mention to the choir who achieved second place and a score of 9 out of 10; an excellent result.

And finally, a reminder to families to get their tickets soon for the Man of Steel. A lot of hard work is going into making it great and your support will be invaluable in applauding their efforts. In support of this special event, the school will be providing the opportunity for some students to purchase tickets and attend the matinee as an organised excursion.

Community GardenThis term work has begun on our Community Garden facilitated by the Gagamin Men’s Group members Gerald Merritt and Roger Gordon (Kids Out West). It is hoped to provide an opportunity for our students to learn about culture and gain knowledge of native plants landscaping as well as, the artworks of local artist Stephen Moore.

The generosity of our local community and businesses is evident through the volunteers from the Gagamin Men’s Group and the Whalanwarringah Women’s Group. To facilitate the man-power hours, Kennards will provide an excavator, Dingo and Wacca-Packa pro bono to outline the foundations for the garden from a landscape design with consultation with Mathew Sutcliff of Matt Sutcliff Landscaping.

Over the next weeks we hope to complete the foundations of the garden, including retaining walls and privacy screens. Then we will be able to start planting and mulching the garden.Murals and artworks are ongoing as Stephen Moore works with an artistic team to design and paint the murals every Tuesday. We look forward to the final result and are hoping to unveil the Garden during our NAIDOC week next term.

Peer Mentoring Catch-UpOur second peer mentoring afternoon was attended by almost fifty students and they had a great time participating in different activities. We started with a scavenger hunt. In teams the students collected all sorts of objects from the area as well as

singing songs, taking photos and being creative. The students also participated in a “step to the line” activity which proved we are all different, though many of us have the same experiences in our lives. We finished in a large circle just getting to know names and

some interesting facts about each other. The Year 10 students really stepped up and were great role models and the Year 7 students really enjoyed the afternoon.

Ms S YaghjianSRC COORDINATOR

Garden ClubThank you to those parents, students and staff who came along to work on our school gardens. We have now sucessfully tidied up and replanted the area near the hall and will look forward to watching our plants grow.

Our veggie garden around T1 is coming along and we are

harvesting on a regular basis.

Any donations of plants would be much appreciated, if you need any ideas please give Ms Yaghjian a call as she is coordinating the Garden Club.

After we concluded our gardening we had a wonderful “American Breakfast” with Mr Holiday cooking up some white

gravy with sausages, as well as pancakes, bacon, biscuits, eggs and grits. Yes grits, certainly a new experience for us all.

We also visited the “Endangered Species Garden” and looked at the work the students are doing to encourage the Yellow-Bellied Sheathtail Bat to make the area its home.
