Principal’s Message

Our Parent Teacher evenings were well attended and thank you to the parents who took the time to meet our teachers and discuss learning goals for this year. We look forward to a cooperative relationship in support of your child’s learning.

This week we have seen the roll out of staff training for Quicksmart. This program is being implemented for improvement in literacy for targeted students. Quicksmart will help them gain the necessary skills to cope with the literacy demands of their regular lessons. We are looking forward to monitoring success in improving student outcomes and my thanks to Mrs Jones who will be coordinating this program.

The school is also trialling the Best Start Program which allows us to get a snapshot of literacy and numeracy performance of Year 7 students so that teachers can tailor necessary support in classes.

The PBL team ran a successful Cares canteen last week. This is a new initiative from the team and I thank them for their commitment to which acknowledging students who have been rewarded with CARES coupons for their positive behaviour.

On Monday night 11 March, there will be a P&C meeting and I hope to see many of you in the library at 7.30pm to join in the discussions and improve your relationship with South Campus.

CARES COUPON CANTEENOur first CARES COUPON CANTEEN for the year was held last Friday the 1 of March in recognition of the positive behaviour being practiced by students throughout the first five weeks of Term One. Students are regularly acknowledged with CARES COUPONS from teachers when displaying behaviour that aligns with the tenets of SOUTH C.A.R.E.S (Courtesy, Achievement, Respect, Effort and Safety.)Students were able to use their CARES COUPONS to purchase an

ice block, a popper and a sausage sandwich. There were big queues and excited students when the lunch bell rang and everyone enjoyed a picnic in the K Block area.A special thanks must go to Clontarf, the Girls Academy and the SRC who made signs and posters, lugged eskies, cooked snags and supplied condiments. It was a great team effort by all. Many students also pitched in to make the event was a success and they will be recognised at the upcoming whole school assembly.

It’s affirming to see how many students are being recognised for their positive behaviour in the school. We are so proud of you all!All CARES COUPONS were collected and placed in the draw for the major prize awarded the end of the term. In addition to this, a special event is being planned for students to redeem their coupons once more at the end of week 11.

Well done SOUTH!!

Science Matters Vol. 3This fortnight has seen all classes in every year complete their first in-class Topic Test for their assessments. Each topic test has focused on work covered in the first month of the term. The results will help give each student an indication of how they are progressing in the current topic. The next topic test is scheduled to occur around Week 10/11 of this term. In other news, the following has been occurring in Science classes during the fortnight.Year 7 have been exploring the way living things interact with each other within various habitats by creating food chains and food webs. Some classes have been collating information on living things observed around the school to create their food chains, while

other classes have been using footage from the African savannah to develop their skills in creating food webs.Year 8 have been immersing themselves in increasing their knowledge of the various body systems by creating paper models of the heart, paper skeletons or even determining their lung capacity by blowing up balloons. All students have had the opportunity to experience some extension work by dissecting a lamb’s heart to gain a better visual understanding of how each chamber and ‘tube’ work to pump blood around the body.Year 9 are beginning to investigate the way their body responds to changes in the environment with an emphasis on the role of the nervous system. Students have been observing nerve cells under

the microscope while some classes have had the opportunity to determine their speed of reaction by catching a falling ruler and extrapolating data from a provided table of information.

Year 10 are discovering how DNA is responsible for the many unique traits they possess by conducting genetic surveys of their classmates. They have also been creating 3D paper models of DNA’s structure. Some classes have also been fortunate enough to extract actual DNA from a variety of fruits such as bananas and kiwifruit.Until next fortnight, may the cells be with youMr DaviesRel. HT Science

The time has come… The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion has kicked off!

Students have now been supplied with a Sponsorship Form and it’s time to fundraise! How exciting!

Students who raise as little as $10 will receive a prize for their efforts, but why not aim higher? The more money we raise the more we can

provide for the students through vital school projects, in particular updating equipment with the PDHPE Faculty and reducing costs of local excursions

Sign up now at www.myprofilep-age.com.au and create your child a Profile Page. Use the unique code on page five (5) of the Sponsorship Form and see if you’ve won FREE

sponsorship donations. Or, use the sponsorship form to collect money the old fashion way.

Remember to bring $20 to the front office as this will go towards BBQ lunch and drink, Headband, Sunglasses, Transport to the track and the cost of the event.

Happy fundraising!

From the Music FacultyThe year has started off with a bang with our choir and concert band preparing for our tour to Canberra, which will take place next term.

We have 35 members in our Concert band this year and 32 in our choir! Rehearsals take place each week on Monday afternoon between 3.30pm & 5pm and Wednesday recess for the concert band and the choir rehearse every

Monday at recess and soon we will start College choir rehearsals each fortnight on a Wednesday afternoon 3.30pm to 5pm. New members are always welcome.

Many students have also taken the opportunity to come and try instruments at recess and are attending ‘beginner lessons’ in the music room each week.

Mrs Maher and I are always impressed with the dedication and commitment so many of

our students show at learning instruments and supporting our ensembles. We look forward to another fantastic year!

This Morning while doing my bus pickups, I had a father literally run over to my bus to show me some pictures of his son. His son is an incredible young man that we all could see so much potential in and it is great to see one of our old students grasping opportunities with both hands and making the most of it.

The father reached in the bus and grabbed my hand to shake it, he held my hand and proceeded to say “Thank you Clontarf for everything you guys have done for

him I appreciate it so much! We would like you boys to have these photos of Clay to hang in your Clontarf room.“

Moments like these are incredibly valuable and make this job we do one of the most rewarding experiences. We are all blessed to be apart of the growth of these boys and these are just reminders we the Clontarf family are doing great things. Clay Brown is progressing in the Defence Force infantry.

A lot of students have shown interest in scooters and skateboards so we were lucky enough to have a staff member with a real passion for this. Kade

grew up with a skateboard in this hand and it is great to see him share it and have our Skate Club build up to what it is, we always get a large number of boys to this activity and we can only hope to build it into bigger things.

We have had some great leaders take a step in our academy space. This week we have had some guests from Bank of Queensland come through the academy and school. The young men were able to show our guests around our space and tell them why they love the school and Clontarf. Its always great seeing these young men be proud of their school and community. Well done Gents.
