As part of a multi-agency effort to provide coastal flood protection, Valley Water will begin hauling 300,000 cubic yards of fill material in April 2019 to Pond A12, a former salt pond in Alviso.

Valley Water will use the fill material to construct a 15.2-foot high flood protection levee along the existing berms on the eastern side of the county park, Pond A12 and the southeastern corner of Pond A13.

*Reach 1 is a project segment that runs from the Alviso Marina County Park north to the Union Pacific Railroad.

Trucks will access the Pond A12 stockpile site via State Route 237 to the Lafayette Street/Great America Parkway, the Gold Street Connector, from Gold Street to Elizabeth Street, then Hope Street to the Alviso Marina County Park entrance and the eastern most maintenance access road. This route provides site access without travel in school areas. Truck hauling will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

A flagman north of the park entrance will direct trucks to the stockpile site and maintain clear access for park visitors.

A second flagman will be on the levee trail immediately south of Pond A12 to direct the public away from the haul route. Guardrails along the maintenance access road will provide public safety and maintain a continuous open loop trail in Alviso Marina County Park for park visitors.

Expect daily closures of the maintenance access road between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Fill delivery is expected to continue until the United States Army Corps of Engineers awards a construction contract for Reach 1* of the project later this year.
