Did You Know?Because of Medicare, less than 1 percent of Americans 65 andover are without health insurance, comparedwith 15 percent
of the general population.
Staying put can be challengefor couple as they volunteer
for several organizations
Bob Stanan/DemocratGene and Jo Colvin, of Sedalia, donate much of their time support-ing the American Red Cross.
By Bob Satnan
Jo Colvin holds an image of aHurricane Katrina victim holding asign requesting food or water sincehe and his neighbors had been with-out nourishment for two days.
“That says it all,” Jo said, ex-plaining why she gives so much ofher time to the American Red Cross. She said Samuel, the man in the Ka-trina photo, is “the sweetest man”and once she and other volunteershelped him, he stayed with the RedCross crew and worked to help oth-ers.
Jo worked in the Katrina-rav-aged bayou for three months, com-ing home just four days beforeThanksgiving 2005. Once she gothome, the Red Cross asked her toreturn; her grandchildren didn’t likethe idea.
“It affects your family,” she said.“It’s hard, but sometimes you haveto stay home.”
Staying put is a challenge for Joand her husband, Gene. Both volun-teer substantial amounts of time tothe Red Cross, and Gene is a raceofficial for NASCAR, so he is onthe road many weeks throughout theyear.
Years ago, Jo and Gene decidedto make two-year time commit-ments to various groups, includingUnited Way, CASA and SpecialOlympics. But Jo said when theystarted working with Red Cross, sheknew, “This is where I need to be.”
The Colvins’ bond with RedCross began in 2004 when Hurri-cane Ivan hit the Atlantic coast.Gene was preparing to head out oftown for a race and Jo asked, “Whatif I went to help?”
Jo was at the Red Cross chapterin Kansas City the next day, thenwas flown to the disaster area within24 hours after that.
Gene said Jo works about fivedays a month with the local RedCross chapter, mainly assisting withfires but she also did a lot of workwhen the tornado hit Sedalia inMay. In those circumstances, Jo,who serves on the chapter’s boardof directors, helps set up hotelrooms for displaced families, andmakes sure people have propermedications, eye glasses, insulinand food. Jo heaped praise on TomAdermann, general manager of theBest Western State Fair Inn, for hisefforts when disaster strikes locally.
“He is so good,” Jo said. “Wecouldn’t have anyone better” whenit comes to providing shelter forfamilies displaced by fires orstorms.
But the Red Cross is not the onlybeneficiary of the Colvins’ volun-teer spirit. Four generations of theirfamily work on behalf of Salvation
Army, especially at Christmas time.It is a tradition started by Jo’smother, Geneva Ford Stout, whoused to ring bells at the red kettlewhen they lived in Arizona andwould bring her four daughters withher.
“We ring bells as much as wecan,” Jo said, noting that theirgrandson Adam, 3, brings in moremoney than anyone in the familywhen he is helping out. TheColvins’ daughter, Rebecca, lives ina group home, and Jo and Genebring the residents out to ring bells.Jo said the residents enjoy the expe-rience, and she and Gene watchthem from a distance to let themhave their independence, but still besupervised.
Jo also does customer servicework for the Missouri State Fair.Fair Director Mark Wolfe said thestaff there knows that the Red Crosswork is Jo’s “first love, it’s some-thing she is dedicated to.” So whendisaster strikes and Jo needs to hitthe road, Wolfe lets her take all thetime she needs.
“We’re glad to have her whenwe do. She is a tremendous helparound here,” Wolfe said. “She hasthe true spirit of a volunteer, and sheworks hard at anything she takeson.”
Wolfe not only appreciates Jo’svolunteerism, but also her sense ofhumor.
“She is comical as all get out ...it’s fun to have her around,” he said.
Also at Christmas, Jo and Genelend a hand to family friend CarolMcMillin and the Community Santaprogram. Last year, with the help ofa couple of their grandchildren, theymade 35 to 40 baskets of cookiesthat were distributed to needy sen-iors along with holiday food vouch-ers.
“There’s nothing like homemadecooking at Christmas,” Jo said. TheColvins plan to help out again thisyear, only it will be cupcakes in-stead of cookies. Gene said theirkitchen becomes an assembly line, with their grandchildren and Re-becca’s group home residents pitch-ing in.“Putting a little sparkle in some-one’s eyes — that is what you do itfor,” Jo said.
Gene stressed the Sedalia area’sgenerosity, saying, “This is a verygiving town.” As an example, theColvins pointed to May’s tornado.
“We spent less than $100 overfive days (on food) thanks to all ofthe donations,” Jo said. That givingspirit drives the Colvins every day.
“Red Cross is why God put uson this earth,” Jo said. “It is my call-ing, where I am supposed to be.”

Tips To Help AlleviateCaregiving Stress
(NAPS)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make lifemore stressful for those providing the care.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregiverstend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs.
Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feelingstrained emotionally, physically or financially.
The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it ishard to watch a parent losecognitive abilities.
It’s not unusual for care-givers to develop health prob-lems of their own. Part of thereason is that they are less like-ly to take good care of them-selves due to time and moneyconstraints imposed by care-giving. Caregivers may nothave the time for regularcheckups, may not fill a pre-scription due to cost, misssleep or forget to eat healthymeals.
It’s very important for care-givers to recognize their ownlimits. Here are a few tips to help:
•Find out about caregiving resources in your community.•Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to
do their share.•Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do”
lists.•Stay in touch with family and friends.•Join a support group.•Make time to get away and have fun.•Consider home care supportive services.A home Care Professional can coordinate a patient’s plan of care
under the direction of his or her doctor. Awide range of treatments andprocedures that were once performed in a hospital can now be deliv-ered at home. Trained clinicians teach individuals and their familiesself-management for chronic conditions or help with recovery from anillness or injury.
Supportive services from a home care company can help withbathing, preparing meals, shopping, companionship, transportationand limited light housework.
Contact your advertising representative if you would like to haveyour business featured in this space.
Care For The Caregiver: It’s not unusualfor caregivers to develop health prob-lems of their own. They are less likely tomake time to take good care of them-selves.

Q: I am loving the new fall season sofar -- lots of good shows and only a fewstinkers in the bunch. Which shows areyou digging so far? -- Clyde R., via e-mail
A: In the drama category, far and awaymy favorite show has to be ABC's "Re-venge," which has injected a much-neededshot of campy, soapy, sexy drama into myWednesday nights. (If you are on Twitter, you can follow my live-tweeting feeds attwitter.com/celebrity_extra every Wednes-day starting at 10 p.m. ET, where all of us"Revenge" fans whoop and holler to-gether.) I haven't had this much fun watch-ing a nighttime drama -- nor have Italked to the TV screen so much -- since"Melrose Place."On the comedy side, it's a tie betweenZooey Deschanel's "New Girl" on Fox andABC's "Suburgatory," whose ensemblecast of Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, CherylHines, Alan Tudyk and Ana Gasteyer hasme wiping tears of laughter from my faceevery episode.
***Q: I love watching "The Talk" every
afternoon. What happened to two of theoriginal hostesses, Holly Robinson Peeteand Leah Remini? -- Joanne M., Fair-port, N.Y.
A: Holly's and Leah's contracts werenot renewed by CBS after the first season. As of Sept. 6 and Oct. 23, respectively,CBS officially replaced them with SherylUnderwood and Aisha Tyler.
***Q: I really like "Prime Suspect," es-
pecially the actor who plays DetectiveBlando. Can you tell me a little abouthim? He looks so familiar. -- GenniferF., Allentown, Pa.
A: Tim Griffin, 42, has starred andguest-starred in countless TV series andbig-screen movies, including "Party ofFive," "Charmed," "Grey's Anatomy,""The Bourne Supremacy," "24," "IronMan," "The Men Who Stare at Goats," andmost recently, "Super 8" and "Abduction."
I spoke with Tim about his role in theAmerican version of the British cop dramaand asked if he had any qualms about try-ing to "remake" such a popular series. Timtold me: "It wasn't really until we started
doing the initial press work that I realized,'OK, this is a sacred institution,' because Iwas a huge fan of the British series too. It's almost like a trial by fire that you haveto go through. Can it be envisioned, reimagined with an American voice?
"Our partners are the original producersof the original ‘Prime Suspect,’ Tim said."So we have that entire cannon of scriptsat our disposal, and we have Peter Berg asthe executive producer and director. It'slike its own new animal."
***Q: I read somewhere that James Van
Der Beek's wife recently had anotherbaby. Didn't they just have a daughter?-- Barb D., via e-mail
A: You are halfway correct, Barb.James and wife Kimberly have a daughter,Olivia, who recently turned 1, and are ex-pecting their second child next year. Jamestweeted: "Just when we thought we could-n't feel any more blessed, it seems the uni-verse has plans to give our daughter asibling."

Don’t forget your permits
For fanatical deer hunters — including thosewho’ve been bowhunting for the past eightweeks — life gets hectic the last few daysbefore opening day of the firearms deer season.
For the one-weekend-per-year crowd, con-fusion reigns supreme.
In either case, the odds that some vital, semi-vital or I-wish-I-had-one-of-those items will beleft behind increase geometrically with the dis-tance between the hunter’s home and his huntinggrounds. I’ve proven this to be true by scientificmethodology, and I’m sure you all know what thatmeans.
Permits top the list of things not to forget, and enough hunters forget to purchase them tomake hunting without the proper permits(s)high on the list of violations encountered byconservation agents.
I learned how inconvenient this memorylapse can be when I parked my car a few hun-dred yards from a spot I’d been dreaming aboutbowhunting for months. I reached into theglove box to transfer a deer and a turkey permitto my coat pocket only to discover that thereweren’t any permits to transfer.
The only thing I could do was return totown. I bought my permits the next day. Thisstory does have a happy ending because thefirst time I hunted that stand I shot both a deerand a turkey from it within an hour of eachother.
This year, hunters will have to remember tocarry some means of attaching the new, non-sticky permits to their deer. I folded my permitin half and then punched a hole throughout —trying my best to avoid any pertinent informa-tion.
I plan to wrap the permit around my deer’shock and then fasten it there with a small plasticcable tie. Whatever means you choose, makesure the permit stays put until the deer arrives atits processing location but is removable so theTelecheck ID number can be written on it priorto reattaching the permit to the deer.
A blaze orange vest and hat are as unforget-table as permits. Except on conservation areaswhere only archery methods are legal, wearingblaze orange is both a legal and a commonsense requirement for all hunters during any ofthe various firearms deer seasons.
Ammunition is another easily forgotten, yetvital item. Just to prove it could be done, takemy blackpowder hunt 200 miles from home asan example. I realized that I didn’t load the largetackle box that held my powder, bullets, primers, cleaning kit and approximately a zillion
other blackpowder accessories.Maybe I shouldn’t include an efficient hunt-
ing knife on my list of things not to forget, because leaving your knife at home is the surestway to need it I know. If you believed I left myblackpowder box behind as a demonstration, there’s a chance you’ll believe I’ve left myBuck Folding Hunter at home twice just so Icould see what an interesting chore field-dress-ing a deer with a 1-inch penknife can be.
Both pairs of gloves and single gloves alltoo often get left behind, albeit only when theweather is or becomes bitterly cold. My owngloves have become so adept at evading cap-ture the night before opening day, I stash hope-fully matched pairs in my car, in the pockets ofall of my coats and in my fanny pack. Now let’ssee them all hide at the same time!
For many hunters, food and water don’t getforgotten, because they weren’t on the take listin the first place. It took me decades to learnthat having food and water — especially water— readily available makes hunting less of anendurance contest.
In the real world, this means that hunterswho have quart of water and a couple of proteinbars in their pockets stay in the woods longer.Hunters who spend more time hunting, killmore deer. It really is as simple as that.
Although I forget mine an embarrassingnumber of times per year, a decent — by whichI mean better than the one in a phone — digitalcamera should be an item not to forget.
Once in a lifetime moments are exactly that.I’ve never heard anyone say, “I wish I hadn’ttaken pictures of those two bucks fighting or ofthat sunrise or of my first 10-pointer while hewas still in the woods.”
The last, but by far most important thing notto forget, is the right attitude.
Some of you will be pursuing outsizedantlers with a zeal unmatched since the Cru-saders sought the Holy Grail. Others, myselfincluded, put equal mental and physical effortinto harvesting enough deer to insure their fam-ilies a full year’s supply of red meat.
There’s nothing inherently improper ineither of those approaches to deer hunting. Ormore correctly, there’s nothing wrong with con-centrating on one facet of deer hunting so longas that facet doesn’t block the view of what thesport is supposed to be about, returning to thenatural world from which our species sprang.
