Other sea life in- cluded whales and seals. Vast flocks of seabirds filled the air. Otterspool was named after the frisky mam- mals that fed on the plentiful fish. They are beautiful- ly depicted on a stone plaque (pictured), un- veiled in 1950 to cel- ebrate the opening of the Otterspool Promenade, one of the best places to see the estuary. The modified plaque also records TEEMING WITH FISH by Stephen Guy renovations carried out in 2007 to commem- orate the 800th an- niversary of Liverpool’s Royal Charter. At the time of King John’s charter monks from Stanlow Abbey, on the opposite side of the river, held the fish- ing rights. In the late 17th cen- tury the Mersey was teeming with fish and supplied towns and vil- lages up to 20 miles away. More than 40 vari- eties were recorded in- cluding sturgeon. Salmon were so plen- tiful off Otterspool that they were fed to the pigs. In 1779 industry came to the area when a snuff mill was built. The development of Liverpool and other towns saw increasing pollution of the Mersey although fish- ing continued. Until the middle of the 19th century fish- ermen’s cottages dot- ted the Otterspool coast. One of the last fishermen lived at the end of Jericho Lane until 1927. At this time the area was changing rapidly following the purchase of the Otterspool es- tate by Liverpool Corporation. The Promenade was the idea of Liverpool’s visionary city engi- neer John Brodie in 1919. It took many years to become a re- ality. Asea wall was built between the wars. Once this was com- plete, the original shoreline was obliter- ated by domestic waste and rubble excavated from the first Mersey road tunnel. The works provid- ed employment for many during the dark- est days of the de- pression. After the Second World War more waste was dumped for the ex- tension of the wall northwards. The debris included the remains of bombed buildings, old air-raid shelters and later ma- terial excavated for the second Mersey Tunnel opened in 1971. Seventy acres of land was reclaimed, some being used for the popular International Garden Festival in 1984. I remember atmos- pheric Jericho Farm which was demolished before the construc- tion of the new road to the city centre. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free. (McKenna) died last monthaged just 61 and, in using thepages of the LINK to pay trib-ute to her, I am also hoping to

raise awareness of ovariancancer and to praise the won-derful work done by theLiverpool Women’s Hospital(Wards G1 & G2).

A TRIBUTE TOMY LOVELY

SISTERby Moira Hesketh (co-owner, The LINK)

I am one of six siblingsand Colette was the oldestof us. She was complete-ly and selflessly devotedto the family and will bedearly, dearly missed by allof us. Growing up, shewas always the proud andprotective oldest sister and, throughout her life, shewould always do anythingand everything to help andsupport me, my sisters andbrothers and the extendedfamily. She only ever sawthe good in people.

On the evening of 4thJune, Colette rang me athome and told me that shewas in such pain and dis-comfort that she was go-ing to the Royal (Hospital)straight away and, natu-rally, I went there with her.She was diagnosed withcancer within a matter ofdays and we lost her on the27th August. Character-istically, Colette faced upto this with courage, char-acter, dignity and spirit butthe fact that we have losther so suddenly and at sucha relatively young age hasleft us all feeling rather likea tsunami has torn throughour lives.

Colette was a free spir-it who loved nature and thearts, especially literature, languages and history, andwhen Dawn and I startedthe LINK back in 2006

Colette immediately of-fered her services in what-ever capacity we might re-quire. As was typical of her,she did not want paying forany of this. Over the years, she has helped with thechecking of editorial andhas written a huge numberof features in the LINKabout a wide-ranging va-riety of topics and thesehave attracted praise andcompliments from a greatmany of you, readers andadvertisers alike.

Many of these featureshave appeared year-by-year, and will continue todo so, and she has con-tributed articles on suchtopics as Easter, Christmas,G u y F a w k e s N i g h t ,Mother’s Day & Father’sDay, Chinese New Year toname but a few and her fea-ture on Halloween appearsin this edition. She alsowrote evocatively, touch-ingly and humorously inthe Walton Link about ourdays growing up in theWalton area.

Colette often helped mewith the delivery of theLINK to advertisers inSouth Liverpool and at theend of May, only about 10days before she was diag-nosed with cancer, she wasout helping me deliver theLINK - something I willnever forget. Thank you for

everything, Col, thank you.

From the Royal, Colettewas transferred to theL i v e r p o o l Wo m e n ’sHospital and spent the last8 weeks of her life there. She really could not havehad better care or been inbetter surrounds and thisis something which we asa family find great com-fort in. So a very big thankyou to all the staff there forall their care, compassionand devotion. Colette spentthe last five days of her lifein the hospital’s MulberrySuite (incorporating re-clining chairs, kitchen, shower room, etc.) andthese marvellous facilitiesmeant that the whole fam-ily were able to stay withher constantly, 24 hours aday, during this time. Thisis a considerable source ofadditional comfort to usduring what has been, andstill is, a terrible time inour lives.

The privately-fundedMulberry Suite was offi-cially declared open bySue Johnston in 2009 andgives comfort, dignity andprivacy to terminally-illpatients and their familiesand we are so, so gratefulthat this facility was madeavailable to Colette. Thehospital is planning to openanother similar unit (“TheOrchid Suite”) to enable

more families to comfort and ac-company their loved ones. Fundingis being sought and my family andI are determined to assist in what-ever ways we can. If any readerwould like to donate to this won-derful cause, then all donations (nomatter how small) will be grateful-ly appreciated and can be sent toMoira Hesketh, Liverpool Link, POBox 170, Liverpool, L25 7WX(payable to “EVOC-Orchid Room”).

My family and I would like tothank all our many friends and rel-atives for your kindness and sup-port at this time. We would also liketo express our thanks to PaulMcNicholl (Deacon St. CharlesBorromeo) for a beautiful service. Finally we would like to thankPeter and Lorraine Coyne (PeterCoyne Independent FuneralService) for their personal, profes-sional and compassionate atten-tion to the funeral arrangements.

It’s that time ofyear again – butHallowe’en (orEveof All Hallows)means daifferentthings to differentpeople. The earlyChristian churchsaw it as a day tocelebrate the saintsand it was alsoknown as All SaintsDay.

The Celts celebrat-ed their dead in paganrituals long beforeChristianity made it’spresence felt and, aswith so many otherfestivities, the pagantradition combinedwith the church tradi-tion to give the day aflavour all of it’s own.

Of course, whatwould Hallowe’en bewithout seasonal good-ies such as roast chest-nuts, toffee apples or,in Ireland, the tradi-tional barmbrack (fruitbread). Added to these, the growing populari-ty of American treatssuch as pumpkin soupand pumpkin pie nowmakes Hallowe’en atruly multi-cultural af-fair, with fun for every-one.

“Trick or treat” is arecent American im-port which arousesmixed feelings but we,of course, have our oldc u s t o m s s u c h a s“duck-apple” or “ap-ple-bobbing”, whichcan be great fun for allthe family, and everyhome should have it’s

WATER INTAKE:THE BASICS

• Water is an essentialnutrient, and drinkingtoo little can signifi-cantly affect how youfeel and perform athome, at work and inthe gym.• While minimal levelsof dehydration probablywon’t impact perform-ance, higher levels ofdehydration have a sig-nificant negative impacton exercise perform-

ance, particularly forendurance athletes.High levels of dehydra-tion also increase anathlete’s risk of heart-related illness.• For everyday exercis-ers, water is the bestbeverage to consumebefore, during and afterexercise. Enduranceathletes and otherstraining at high levelsmay benefit from theaddition of carbohy-drate and electrolyte

containing beveragesduring and post exer-cise to maintain optimallevels of hydration.

• The amount of fluidyou should consumevaries from person toperson and depends ona number of factorsincluding level of fit-ness, weather condi-tions, activity and sweatrate.

• Recommendation: ingeneral, you shoulddrink enough fluid dur-ing the day so yoururine is clear (dark

coloured urine oftenindicates dehydration).

STRANGE TALES

path wandered up anddown through pleasantcountryside.

Roderick Meade

was on a mission. Itwas 1580 and his mas-t e r , S i r J o h nCunningham, had en-trusted him with animportant business or-der with a leading

Liverpool merchant.Following the heavy

rain, Roderick decid-ed to avoid the pot-holed road and take thecross-country route heknew well.

He clutched theleather satchel con-taining the documentsclosely to his side ashe reached the brow ofthe hill.

briskly on.The footpath now

approached a privateestate bounded on allsides by high sand-stone walls. An elegantgateway loomed intoview, its ornamentaliron gates closed.

Roderick had beenthis way many timesand was accustomed toopening the gates be-fore continuing alongthe path bounded onboth sides by darkshrubbery.

He was dismayed tofind the gates firmlylocked and rattled themnoisily. A squat figureapproached from with-in the gates, dressed infine clothes and sport-ing a large gold chainthat glittered in thesunshine.

The man wore abrimmed hat and dou-blet and hose of ex-cellent quality.

He stopped on theother side of the gatesand Roderick asked to

be admitted. “I amA l d e r m a nHummingbird and yeshall not pass,” said the

man pompously.“This path is open

to all and has beenused for generations,”

replied Roderick.“Ye shall not pass.

The path is now closedbecause of the fear-

some griffin which isa danger to one andall.”

Roderick stifled hislaughter and protested:“The griffin was fearedin my great-grandfa-ther’s time but is nomore.”

The Alderman gavea shrug, turned on hisheels and walked ma-jestically away alongthe path. Roderickheaded off but as hedid so saw two large

eyes scrutinising himfrom within the depthsof the shrubbery.

He was much de-layed by having tomake a diversionaround the estate butcompleted his missionby nightfall.

A month later hewas given a similartask by his master. Thistime he found the gatesunlocked with no signo f A l d e r m a nHummingbird.

Roderick warilypassed through andwalked uneasily alongthe path. Dark cloudsraced overhead and aneerie breeze ruffled thesinister shrubbery.

Then he saw twolarge bloodshot eyesstaring at him intent-ly through the leaves.

He quickened hispace and was alarmedto hear heavy foot-steps stalking along-s i d e h i m i n t h e

gloom. An awfulstench filled the air.

Roderick broke intoa run as the hidden beastsprinted behind him.

Just as he cleared thewoods to safety he sawa big gold chain hang-ing from a branch, clanking in the wind.

On Saturday 31st August, man-ager Paul Watts took a com-bined over 35 Veterans team tothe first ever North West VetsTournament.

Three group stage wins againstFrodsham, Drury and Chorlton sawthem comfortably through to thequarter-final where a solid perform-ance brought a semi-final againstanother Liverpool side Sefton Vets, who won their quarter final 5-0.

Another great team performance sawSefton brushed aside 3-0.

In the final the opposition wereBolton side Pineapple, many peo-ples’ favourite to win the competi-tion. A tight first half saw Alder takea 1-0 lead which they built on in agreat second half performance withthe winning goal coming from gold-en boot winner John Garrity. Johnscored 7 goals on the day andDamien Lewis, who played in everygame, walked away with the Playerof the Tournament award.

A massive thanks to Halewood

FC boys Lee Turkington, KevinPattinson and Jimmy Aerabi whogave great performances in everygame and played a massive part inwinning the cup.

A quick mention also to new keep-er Mike Bolton and Paul Barnes fortheir performances. And manythanks and good luck to FrodshamVets, who put on a fantastic day toraise much needed funds and aware-ness to increase the chances of betterfacilities for local kids.

The opening day of the Vetsleague season saw them march to a

6-1 away defeat of De La Salle.Steve Stewart was the hit marksmanwith 4 goals, with Mick Russell anda great diving header from Jim Daviscompleting the scoring.

The team pictured are: MikeBolton, Lee Turkington (Halewood),Kevin Pattinson (Halewood), JimmyAerabi (Halewood), Kev Walsh(capt), Lee Hunter, Gary Summers,John Boyd, Charlie Boyd, DamienLewis, Paul Brown, Jay Taylor, AlanBrookeman, Phil Farrelly and JohnGarrity.

ALDER FC - WATTS LADS TURN ON THE POWER

LCPL PremierD i v i s i o n s i d eStoneycroft weresent reeling withthe shock resigna-tion of theirboss ofthree years, JohnLeary.

Leary was forced torelinquish the post be-cause of pressing busi-ness commitments andhe felt he could not de-vote the time necessaryto do justice to themanager’s role. TheClub has already com-menced the search fora replacement andhave advertised thepost. In the meantimeKenny Morrison andMick Titherington willfill the gap in a care-taker capacity.

On the playingfront after a series ofreversals the teamrecorded their first vic-tory of the campaignscoring twice in the lastten minutes to comef r o m b e h i n d a tPinewoods to take allthree points in a firstclass team display.Paul Finnegan playeda captain’s role in lead-ing the team by ex-ample to earn himselfthe man of the matchaward. The first goalcame when substituteMick Kearns latchedon to an excellentthrough ball and de-lightfully lobbed theball over the advanc-ing goalkeeper. Thesecond came from theboot of last season’st o p s c o r e r M i k eKinney with a beauti-

fully crafted curler into the top corner of thePinewoods’ net. Thisseason’s new signingsare beginning to maketheir mark with im-proving displays fromBrian Porter and JackKelsall whilst young-ster Callum Walker isshowing great poten-tial.

Sadly the ‘Croft’could not manage a re-sult against a power-ful Waterloo Dock sidewhen the teams met atMaiden Lane the fol-lowing week. A nice-ly worked move and aclinical finish saw the‘Dock’take the lead af-ter three minutes rais-ing fears amongst thehome crowd. Howeverthe new found deter-mination saw the homeside weather the earlystorm to complete acompetitive first half. The second period wasa more evenly foughtcontest as the homeside endeavoured torescue the situation on-ly to see a defensivelapse allow the visitorsto net a second and se-cure all three points.

Impressive first ap-pearances from newsignings Paul Jewelland James Cowhig, both coming on as sec-ond half substitutes, were among the posi-tives to take from thegame for the MaidenLane crew. Nextweek’s fixture seesSouth Liverpool as thevisitors in a first roundLiverpool ChallengeCup encounter.

WINTER IS COMING

SOUTH GET OFFTO A FLYER

by Jim Stanway

Despite having anexacting start tothe season, SouthLiverpool FChave had an ex-cellent August, with both the firstteam and the re-serves headingtheir respectivedivisions on atleast one occa-sion.

South started theirf i r s t e v e r We s tCheshire League firstdivision season with acomfortable 3-0 homewin against fellow pro-motees Mallaby, withgoals from captainAdam Rood, centreforward CameronDalton and midfield-er Elliott Burnett. Witha striker shortage in thenext game against ri-vals Maghull, the teamstruggled to breakdown a revampedMaghull team and, get-ting caught twice onthe break, lost 3-1.However, an excellent2-0 win at VauxhallMotors Reserves, witha first competitive goalfor new striker CarlGargan, and a com-prehensive 5-0 homewin over Upton AA

with a hat-trick fromthe pacy Gary Pollard, put the team at the topof the league.

Further wins by 2-1 at home to champi-ons Heswall and 2-0 atAshville saw a 3-pointgap open up at the topof the table. However,a 5 - 2 d e f e a t a tC a m m e l l L a i r dReserves, where sev-eral defensive errorsproved fatal, and a freeS a t u r d a y o n 1 4September saw theteam relinquish theirlead at the top withmain rivals Maghullwinning three games inthe same time period.Nevertheless, such astart is better than couldhave been predictedas the team now starttheir Challenge Cupc a m p a i g n a tStoneycroft.

The reserves havehad a great start to theirseason and head thetable at the time ofwriting, with sevenwins out of eightgames in the WestCheshire League thirddivision, scoring 33goals in the process. They recorded a su-perb 4-2 win at FordMotors on the openingday of the season(against oppositionwho were last seasonplaying in the premierd i v i s i o n o f t h eLiverpool CountyPremier League). Twogoals from CurtisCummins on his returnto the club and oneeach from FrancisEvans and JamesWelsh saw the team getoff to a cracking start.A close 2-1 win athome to Belfry, withgoals from Cumminsand midfielder NeilRoach, followed aneasy 9-2 win at lowlyUpton AA Reserveswith hat-tricks forCummins and Paul

from Cummins; a 5-2home win againstNeston Nomads, withtwo goals from lastseason’s youth teamstriker Sharif Yusuf; a6-1 home win againstMarshalls Reserves, with a further two goalsfrom Yusuf, and a 4-1home win over ChesterNomads Reserves with

Wilson. A 2-0 defeatat Bootle Reserves, where the team endedthe game with ninemen, has been the on-ly blip.

T h e f o l l o w i n ggames all saw com-prehensive wins; a 3-1 home win againstMerseyside Police,with another two goals

two goals for AlexWoodcock, last sea-son’s leading first teamgoalscorer, on his re-turn from injury andholiday.

The youth team, anentirely new squad ofplayers, most of whomhad won the TuebrookJunior Under-16s titlelast season, have start-ed without a win todate. A close 3-2 de-f e a t a t Va u x h a l lMotors, with goalsfrom Craig Byrne andJamie Clair, was fol-lowed by a 1-1 homedraw with West Kirby, with another goal fromCraig Byrne.

The club’s ladiesteam have played theirvery first league gameunder the club’s namebut, unfortunately, losta nine-goal thriller 5-4 with the team’s strik-er Claire Piercy scor-ing all four of theteam’s goals to put hername into the club’srecord books.
